Groups associated to a knot in S3 which classify the knot have been constructed by Conway and Gordon [4], Simon [12] and Whitten[16]; see also [1] and [19] for certain special classes of knots. In this note we show that for a knot K in S3 of the groups π1(S3/K)/〈malb〉 classify the knot; here m resp. l denote a meridian resp. longitude of the knot and 〈〉 denotes normal closure. This is based on Thurston's orbifold geometrization theorem [13–15] and the following result (see also [8, 19]):

Theorem 1. Let O1 and O2 be good closed irreducible 3-orbifolds which possess a decomposition into geometric pieces (along Euclidean 2-suborbifolds, see [2, 15]) and have infinite (orbifold-) fundamental group. Then O1 and O2 are diffeomorphic (as orbifolds) if and only if π1 O1 and π1 02 are isomorphic.

Given a variety X over a field k and a dense open subset U of X, the related generalized albanese problem has two parts. First we want to classify rational maps with domain U into commutative algebraic groups, into reasonable categories, and then in each category we want to find an object α which is universal in the sense that any β in this category factors through α.

In a recent publication [2], R. Brown and the first author proved a Lifting Theorem for groups (and topological groups) showing that if β: B → H is an epimorphism of groups and H is a certain type of colimit of groups, then this colimit can be lifted (or pulled back) through β; that is B is a colimit of the lifted diagram (see Corollary 2·3 below).

In the lattice theory that underlies topology, that is, in the study of frames, a class of frames arising naturally is that of the stably continuous frames (see §0 for definitions). On the one hand, they correspond to the most reasonable not necessarily Hausdorff compact spaces, and on the other, they are precisely the retracts of coherent frames. Moreover, an important special case of stably continuous frames are the compact regular frames which correspond to compact Hausdorff spaces.

In discussing the consequences of a conditional estimate for the sixth moment of cubic Weyl sums, Hooley [4] established asymptotic formulae for the number ν(n) of representations of n as the sum of a square and five cubes, and for ν(n), defined similarly with six cubes and two biquadrates. The condition here is the truth of the Riemann Hypothesis for a certain Hasse–Weil L-function. Recently Vaughan [8] has shown unconditionally , a lower bound of the size suggested by the conditional asymptotic formula. In the corresponding problem for ν(n) the author [1] was able to deduce ν(n) > 0, as a by-product of the result that almost all numbers can be expressed as the sum of three cubes and one biquadrate. As promised in the first paper of this series we return to the problem of bounding ν(n) from below.

Pregroups were defined by Stallings[7] who showed that the elements of the group they define have a normal form up to an equivalence called interleaving. Recently Rimlinger[5] has shown that subject to a discreteness and a boundedness condition any pregroup P defines a graph of groups. We show here that closer analysis of P makes the boundedness condition superfluous. In § 1 we give results of Stallings and Rimlinger and prove some key lemmas. In §2 we show that the discreteness condition gives an integer-valued length function in the sense of Lyndon [4]. It follows from the work of Chiswell [2] and Serre [6] that this defines a graph of groups. I would like to thank the referee for his careful reading and useful comments on this paper.

All groups G considered in this paper are finite and all representations of G are defined over the complex numbers. The reader unfamiliar with projective representations is referred to [4] for basic definitions and elementary results.

If G is a group with a subgroup H and R is a Dedekind domain, then an H-projective RG-lattice is an RG-lattice that is a direct summand of an induced lattice for some RH-lattice N: they have been studied extensively in the context of modular representation theory. If H is the trivial group these are the projective lattices. We define a relative character χG/H on H-projective lattices, which in the case H = 1 is equivalent to the Hattori–Stallings trace for projective lattices (see [5, 8]), and in the case H = G is the ordinary character. These characters can be used to show that the R-ranks of certain H-projective lattices must be divisible by some specified number, generalizing some well-known results: cf. Corollary 3·6. If for example we take R = ℤ, then |G/H| divides the ℤ-rank of any H-projective ℤG-lattice.

Let ƒ = {In}n ≽ 0 be a filtration on a ring R, let

Then it is shown that ƒ ↦ ƒw is a closure operation on the set of all filtrations ƒ of R, and if R is Noetherian, then ƒw is a semi-prime operation that satisfies the cancellation law: if ƒh ≤ (gh)w and Rad (ƒ) ⊆ Rad (h), then ƒw ≤ gw. These results are then used to show that if R and ƒ are Noetherian, then the sets Ass (R/(In)w) are equal for all large n. Then these results are abstracted, and it is shown that if I ↦ Ix is a closure (resp.. semi-prime, prime) operation on the set of ideals I of R, then ƒ ↦ ƒx = {(In)x}n ≤ 0 is a closure (resp., semi-prime, prime) operation on the set of filtrations ƒ of R. In particular, if Δ is a multiplicatively closed set of finitely generated non-zero ideals of R and (In)Δ = ∪KεΔ(In, K: K), then ƒ ↦ ƒΔ is a semi-prime operation that satisfies a cancellation law, and if R and ƒ are Noetherian, then the sets Ass (R/(In)Δ) are quite well behaved.

We recall that a locale is a complete lattice L satisfying a ∧ (∨bα) = ∨(a ∧ bα), for all a ∈ L, and {bα} ⊆ L. Examples of locales include the lattices (X) of open subsets of topological spaces X. Following Joyal and Tierney [7], a morphism f: L → M of locales is a ∨-, ∧-, and τ-preserving map. Such functions are sometimes called ‘frame homomorphisms’, in which case the right adjoint f*:M → L (which exists since f preserves ∨) is then called a ‘morphism of locales’.

We show how to partition certain classes of finite projective planes into equicardinal arcs. Several partitions of this kind are to be found in the recent literature and they have aroused a certain amount of interest on two counts, as we shall shortly see.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the structure of fuzzes, introduced by Hutton. We shall not be concerned here with fuzzy topology, but we think that a deeper knowledge of the properties of fuzzes may be helpful in several fields of fuzzy set theory, and in the study of fuzzy topological spaces in particular.

If G is a locally compact group such that G/G0 contains a uniform compactly generated nilpotent subgroup, then G has a maximal compact normal subgroup K such that G/G is a Lie group. A topological group G is an N-group if, for each neighbourhood U of the identity and each compact set C ⊂G, there is a neighbourhood V of the identity such that for each g∈G. Several results on N-groups are obtained and it is shown that a related weaker condition is equivalent to local finiteness for certain totally disconnected groups.

An automorphism σ(G) of a graph G is a permutation of the set of its vertices which preserves adjacency. Under the operation of composition the automorphisms of G form a group Aut(G). The graph G is called asymmetric if Aut(G) is trivial, and symmetric otherwise.

Throughout this paper A denotes a Noetherian local ring with maximal ideal m and M denotes a finitely generated A-module. Moreover stands for the ith local cohomology functor with respect to m (cf. [10]). We refer to [15] for unexplained terminolog.

Consider K⊂G, a proper pair of equal rank compact connected Lie groups. It is known (see [6], proof of theorem 1·1) that the group of self-homotopy equivalences of the rationalization of G/K is (anti)isomorphic, in a natural way, to the group of graded algebra automorphisms of H*(G/K; ℚ). On one side of the matter there is the fact that AutH*(G/K; ℚ) almost gives the integral picture of the group of homotopy classes of the self-homotopy equivalences of G/K, that is, up to a finite ambiguity and up to grading automorphisms of H*(G/K; ℚ) (i.e. those acting on H2i as λi.id, for some non-zero λ∈ℚ): see also [6]. On the other side there is the classical description by Borel[2] of H*(G/K; ℚ) in terms of invariants of Weyl groups, which gives hope for a satisfactory understanding of AutH*(G/K; ℚ).

Let a finite group G act topologically on a closed smooth manifold Mn. One of the most natural and basic questions is whether such an action can be smoothed. More precisely, let γ:G × Mn → Mn be a topological action of G on Mn. The action γ can be smoothed if there exists a smooth action and an equivariant homeomorphism It is well known that for n ≤ 2 every finite topological group action on Mn is smoothable. However already for n = 3 there are examples of topological actions on 3-manifolds which cannot be smoothed (see [1, 2] and references there). All these actions fail to be smoothable because of bad local behaviour.
