Comments on and a key to the 13 Polycoccum species known in Spain are presented, including synopses of their world distributions. Amongst these is P. rubellianae sp. nov., a lichenicolous fungus growing on thalli of Caloplaca rubelliana in eastern Spain (Valencia). It has relatively small ascomata, the lower part pale brown, and also small ascospores which are coarsely verrucose and have a thick gelatinous sheath when young. The new species is associated with a Phoma-like anamorph. The identity and systematic position of P. opulentum requires further study as the name has been applied to different species, and the occurrence of P. marmoratum in Spain is in need of confirmation. The Spanish record of P. arnoldii on Lecania cyrtella probably refers to another yet undescribed species.

The distribution of sixty-six Peltigera species in 230 biogeographic provinces or 40 regions are presented. A hierarchical clustering approach, used to identify clusters of species with similar distribution patterns (floristic elements), resolved four groups made up of Neotropical, Southern Hemisphere, Antarctic and mainly Holarctic species. The Holarctic Kingdom is species rich with the highest number of Peltigera species and also the highest number of endemic species; the Australian and Cape Kingdoms have the lowest number of species and endemics. The species rich provinces are briefly discussed.

Takhtajan's floristic regions of the world, based on vascular plant distribution, were used for a comparative analysis of foliicolous lichen biogeography. Of the 35 regions distinguished by that author, 23 feature foliicolous lichens. The South-East African, Fijian, Polynesian and Hawaiian regions lack sufficient information and were excluded from further analysis. Using multi-dimensional scaling and cluster and cladistic analyses, the remaining 19 regions were grouped into six lichenogeographical regions: (1) Neotropics, (2) African Paleotropics (including Madagascar, Réunion and Seychelles), (3) Eastern Paleotropics (including North-East Australia and New Caledonia), (4) Valdivian region (temperate rainforest in southern South America), (5) Tethyan region (subtropical areas of Macaronesia, Mediterranean, and Western Irano-Turanian) and (6) Neozealandic-Tasmanian region (temperate rainforests of New Zealand and Tasmania). Affinities between these six large scale regions, with 57–77% shared species, are still stronger than those between the 35 smaller scale regions denned by Takhtajan [(20−)40–60(−75)% shared species]. Based on presence/absence within each of the six regions, 22 potential distribution patterns were defined for foliicolous lichens. Many species are widely distributed; 21% are cosmopolitan or pantropical, while 19% are disjunct on at least two continents, and only 60% are restricted to one of the three major tropical areas (nearly 100% in vascular plants). Most of the latter are found in the Neotropics, while the African Paleotropics are poor in endemics. Most genera deviate significantly from overall distribution patterns; for example, Strigula and Calopadia have higher proportions of widely distributed species, while Porina displays a concentration of Eastern Paleotropical endemics. Species diversity and composition of the six regions indicate that the three extra-tropical foliicolous lichen biotas (Valdivian, Tethyan, Neozealandic-Tasmanian) are the result of partly separate evolutionary histories. On the other hand, there is a strong affinity between the Neotropics and the African Paleotropics, suggesting a shared Western Gondwanan element in the foliicolous lichen biotas of these two regions.

Hueidea australiensis Kantvilas & P.M. McCarthy gen. et sp. nov. (Fuscideaceae) is described from seasonally inundated, granite rocks in the Mt Kosciuszko area of New South Wales, Australia. The genus is characterized by the crustose habit, a green unicellular photobiont of the type found in the Fuscideaceae, Teloschistes-type, eight-spored asci, non-adhering, simple paraphyses and polarilocular, hyaline ascospores. Its systematic position is discussed, based on a comparative study of a range of related or superficially similar taxa from the Teloschistaceae and Fuscideaceae.

Soft unprotected sea cliffs and slopes were surveyed at forty localities around the English coast and found to support a restricted lichen flora that was zoned in relation to sea-level. Bed rock composition, structural heterogeneity and high levels of instability largely control the terricolous lichen vegetation, which is predominantly composed of calcicoles typical of early successional stages. Cyanobacterial lichens are well represented. The species encountered can be arranged into three provisional assemblages characteristic of alkaline bed rock, acidic bed rock, and turf edges. Few species with maritime affinities were present but this group included rarely recorded species of Pyrenocollema and abundant Lecanora zosterae. Other rare and unusual lichens were present, often at a low density and in only a few localities. The lichen flora of soft cliffs has links with that found on urban wasteland and, remotely, with that of sand dunes.

Genetic diversity of green algal and cyanobacterial photobionts in Nephroma was examined by using nucleotide sequences of the ribosomal gene cluster. The lichens studied included both bipartite and tripartite species. There was very little variation in green algal-ITS sequences of N. arcticum and N. expallidum. Almost identical sequences were obtained from all thalli analysed and also from two tripartite Peltigera species. On the basis of SSU rDNA data the green algal photobionts of N. arcticum are closely related to the primary photobiont of P. britannica, and also to an endophytic alga of Ginkgo biloba. The SSU rDNA region of lichen-forming cyanobacteria was rather variable. A phylogenetic analysis indicated that the Nostoc specimens formed a monophyletic group and the strains were divided into two main groups. One clade included only cyanobionts of lichens, including those of all bipartite Nephroma species. The second group was genetically more heterogeneous and included mainly cyanobionts of terricolous cyanolichens, including those of both tripartite Nephroma species studied. The distinction between bi- and tripartite Nephroma species is significant as the mycobionts of tripartite species are not monophyletic. It implies that within Nephroma, evolutionary transitions between symbiosis types cannot have been achieved simply via an acquisition or loss of the green algal photobiont. As the Nostoc symbionts of bi- and tripartite species belong to different phylogenetic groups, an evolutionary change in green algal association has required a concurrent change in cyanobiont composition.

The diversity of species of Ramalina occurring on the outlying islands of the New Zealand geographic area is linked to their methods of dispersal and the origin and principal climatic features of the islands themselves. It appears that species of Ramalina have reached these islands by transoceanic, wind-borne dispersal of ascospores and soredia, not necessarily in the direction of the prevailing winds. Species have become established on the islands only if both climatic and habitat requirements have been met.

The influence of environmental variables on epiphytic lichens in Liguria (NW Italy) was examined using two complementary approaches. Firstly, the variability of lichen vegetation in relation to environmental variables was investigated. Secondly, the variability of Lichen Biodiversity (LB) counts, used in biomonitoring studies, was analysed in relation to bioclimatic areas. Geomorphology strongly affects lichen vegetation. The coastal mountain ridge and the Tyrrhenian-Po valley watershed limit the distribution range of three different communities: a Parmelion community with a high frequency of coastal suboceanic species, a Parmelion community rich in oak wood species and the Pannelietum acetabuli association, situated beyond the Po Valley watershed. Substantial differences in the distribution of lichen communities related to a climatic gradient (from humid Mediterranean to dry sub-Mediterranean regions) are not matched by corresponding statistically significant differences in LB counts. More accurate studies are necessary to define homogeneous bioclimatic areas, in which LB values can be compared for biomonitoring purposes.

The factors influencing the predominance of one of the two mineral forms of calcium oxalate (CO), the monohydrated whewellite (COM) and the di-hydrated weddellite (COD), forming the pruina of the upper cortex of lichens, have been investigated through a simple, sensitive histochemical assay: toluidine blue O (TBO), a metachromatic staining test. The differential reactivity of 43 thalli of 17 pruinose foliose species, supplemented by X-ray diffraction analysis and observations with polarizing and scanning electron microscopy, suggests that the histochemical reactivity of hyphal walls and cementing substances of the upper cortex are related to the density of anionic charges. These factors are probably due to the occurrence of polyuronic acid substances that strongly affects the mineralization of CO. Di-hydrated wedellite is always associated with TBO metachromatic reactivity, and COM with orthochromatic reactivity. When the material has an ambiguous ortho/metachromatic reactivity, COD and COM may occur together. This study presents the first experimental evidence that in lichens CO biomineralization is at least partially biologically controlled.

The term ‘phycolichens’ has recently been introduced as a synonym for ‘green algal lichens’ i.e. those having phycobionts as their primary autotrophic partner, which is analogous to the contracted term ‘cyanolichen’. However, a study of the history of the term ‘Phycolichenes’ leads us to suggest that this term should not be applied because of considerable ambiguities in past usage and the possibility of confusion. The term was first created by E. Fries in 1831, and was used later by Massalongo as a taxon for homoiomerous cyanobacterial lichens. With this, or similar meanings, it remained in use until the middle of the 20th Century. Diels (A. Engler's Syllabus der Pflanzenfamilien, Gebr. Borntr., Berlin, 1936) defined the same expression Phycolichenes as lichens with Phycomycetes as mycobiont, and this definition can still be found in recent literature. If a shortened term for green algal lichens is needed then we suggest ‘chlorolichens’ as a better counterpart to cyanolichens.

A new species Opegrapha cladoniicola, lichenicolous on the podetia of Cladonia ochrochlora, is described from Hawaii. It is the first known Opegrapha species found growing on Cladonia.

Biological crusts are a common feature of the soil surface in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, where they play a major role in ecosystem functioning. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the ecophysiology, floristics, and dynamics of crust-forming lichens but little is known about the effect of vascular plants on their small-scale spatial distribution. To increase our understanding about the interactions between crust-forming lichens and vegetation in semi-arid areas, the spatial pattern and interaction of two soil lichens, Cladonia convoluta and Squamarina cartilaginea, at two microsites in semi-arid Stipa tenacissima steppe of south-eastern Spain are evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine if the microsite provided by Stipa tussocks promoted changes in the individual patterns and in the spatial covariation of these soil lichens. Spatial analysis by distance index (SADIE) coupled with correlation analysis was used to explore the individual patterns and the spatial relationships between the two species. SADIE detected a significant clumped pattern in the spatial distribution of both species, but Stipa tussocks promoted changes only in the spatial pattern of Cladonia. Correlation analysis revealed the presence of significant relationships between the two species, particularly close to Stipa tussocks. The results show that the microenvironment provided by Stipa is able to modify the small-scale spatial pattern of soil lichens in semi-arid steppe, and suggest the presence of facilitation between Stipa and Cladonia.

The systematic position of the lichen genus Heppia in the order Lichinales was investigated. 18S rDNA sequence data were analyzed using a Bayesian approach to infer phylogeny using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. The Lichinales are divided at family level into the sister groups Lichinaceae and Peltulaceae. The genus Heppia forms a highly supported clade in the family Lichinaceae. It is shown that the genus Heppia is morphologically well circumscribed within the Lichinaceae. As a nomenclatural consequence, the family name Heppiaceae is placed into synonymy under the older name Lichinaceae.

The epiphytic lichen flora of 25 European ICP-IM monitoring sites, all situated remote from air pollution sources, was statistically related to measured levels of SO2 in air, NH4+, NO3− and SO42− in precipitation, annual bulk precipitation, and annual average temperature. Significant regression models were calculated for eleven acidophytic species. Several species strong negative correlation with nitrogen compounds. At concentrations as low as 0·3 mg N l−1 in precipitation, a decrease of the probability of occurrence is observed for Bryoria capillaris, B. fuscescens, Cetraria pinastri, Imshaugia aleurites and Usnea hirta. The observed pattern correlations strongly suggests a key role of NH4+ in determining the species occurrence, additional role of NO3− cannot be ruled out. Some species show a distinct response to current of SO2 well. It may be concluded that long distance nitrogen air pollution has strong influence the occurrence of acidophytic lichen species.
