Author, broadcaster and researcher Stephanie Hare's presentation on technology ethics was one of the most spoken about events at last year's BIALL conference, a thought-provoking talk that left many wanting more. With this in mind, Mike and Jas Breslin sat down with Stephanie to talk about the fascinating and very readable book it was based on, her thoughts on why technology ethics is especially important to information professionals, and whether she believed AI will ever do law librarians out of a job.

Decolonisation remains as a topical debate in academic libraries. Goldsmiths, University of London Library, led a decolonisation initiative which inspired many other academic libraries to engage in social justice. Here IALS librarian Marilyn Clarke, who was previously Director of Library Services at Goldsmiths, examines what's happening in law libraries when it comes to this matter, and asks whether legal knowledge and the law school can be decolonised.

It goes without saying that few things are more important to information professionals than data, all the more so when that data relates to their own profession. Which is why this third edition of BIALL's Law Firm Survey is so welcome, providing, as it does, data on a range of different information departments working in the library space, while also drawing comparisons from the results of earlier surveys. Here Catherine Bowl and Diane Miller explain the process of compiling the survey, its findings, and the interesting trends it has highlighted.

The International Law Book Facility (ILBF) ships donated law books to organisations across the globe which require good quality legal publications. Since its inception in 2005 it has delivered over 80,000 books to more than 250 organisations in 56 countries. Here Katrina Crossley, the Chief Executive of the ILBF, explains why it is so important and how it works, giving some examples of how the project has eased the way for people training in the law in Africa. The importance of law librarians in all of this is discussed too. Katrina also outlines how ILBF has worked with BIALL in the course of its law librarian training schemes in Sierra Leone and Ghana, and will continue to do so in other countries in Africa as this is expanded.

In this article Dunstan Speight, Librarian of Lincoln's Inn, and Carolyn Rampling, Assistant Librarian, discuss the Inn's project to digitise Library manuscripts and documents from the Archives, explaining how the project has evolved over time and offering guidance based on their experience. Although not the bread and butter of law librarianship, digitisation projects are a feature of life for law librarians working with historic collections. The National Archives launched a new service called Find Case Law in April of last year. Here Daniel Hoadley, Amy Conroy and Editha Nemsic, of Mishcon de Reya LLP, argue that while this does offer some accessibility and legibility it's perhaps not providing access to the full corpus of law that it could, or even should. Also, on a broader level, they propose that there is a case to be made for access to the law being guaranteed and publicly funded.

We have all heard horror stories of ChatGPT making information professionals redundant and taking over the world, but just how proficient is it at good old legal research? Greg Bennett, a law librarian at BPP, invested in the premium version of the package to put it to the test.

BIALL is laying the foundations for a thoughtful, genuine and sustained commitment to diversity and inclusion (D&I), embedded throughout BIALL activities and events. Here D&I Working Group members Narinder Toor and Julia Bhojoo set out the background to this new initiative, including the creation of the working group, and the key goals, progress made and future priorities. To tie in with International Stress Awareness Week and World Kindness Day, the working group arranged the inaugural BIALL wellbeing event focused on mental health. This article highlights many of the speaker's tips and the helpful techniques that can assist with stress and anxiety. It also provides BIALL members with details on how to contribute to the D&I dialogue as well as access useful mental health resources and other wellbeing support.

In this article David Percik, Information Resources Manager at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, reports on a project at IALS to plan out and curate a series of book displays focusing on historically disadvantaged groups. He discusses how the themes of the displays were selected, the consequences of having two differing available spaces, and the work done by the library team to expand the displays beyond books on shelves.

On the few occasions that old manuscripts are encountered in modern practice they may raise problems of reading old handwriting and identifying the place of the document in the legal process. This article by Barbara Tearle gives advice on why specialist help is needed and where to obtain it.

For many years apprenticeships were associated with heavy industry and skilled manual work, but in more recent times the focus has shifted towards other fields and professions, including librarianship. In 2017 CILIP – the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals – began working with employers across sectors designing apprenticeships specific to library, information, knowledge and archives work. The Level 3 Library, Information and Archive Services Assistant Apprenticeship was the first to be developed and came online in 2019 and to date over 100 apprentices have been through the apprenticeship, while other apprenticeships to do with the profession are now up and running. The European Union Databases User Group (EUDUG) is a group of information professionals, and others, who have an interest in European Union information resources and matters. Here Frederico Rocha (manager of the European Documentation Centre at Cardiff University and chair of EUDUG) and Hester Swift (Foreign and International Law Librarian, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library and EUDUG secretary) explain the aims of the group, while illustrating the wide and varied range of speakers and organisations that have played a part in its meetings.
