Habitat preferences and response to habitat conversion remain under-studied for many groups in the tropics, limiting our understanding of how environmental and anthropogenic factors may interact to shape patterns of diversity. To help fill this knowledge gap, we surveyed nocturnal birds such as owls, nightjars and potoos through auditory transect surveys in 22 forest fragments (2.7 to 33.6 ha) in north-west Ecuador. We assessed the relative effect of habitat characteristics (e.g. canopy height and openness, and density of large trees) and fragment attributes (e.g. area, altitude and proportion of surrounding forest cover) on species richness and community composition. Based on our previous work, we predicted that nocturnal bird richness would be highest in relatively larger fragments with more surrounding forest cover. We recorded 11 total species with an average ± SD of 3.4 ± 1.4 (range = 2–7) species per fragment, with higher richness in fragments that were larger, at lower altitudes, and characterized by more open canopies. Nocturnal bird community similarity was not significantly correlated with any measured environmental variable. These results indicate that both landscape (e.g. altitude) and fragment-specific (e.g. size, forest structure) attributes are likely to interact to shape patterns of diversity among this poorly known but ecologically important guild in fragmented tropical landscapes.

The complete life history of the kleptoparasitic ‘sundew flower fly’, Toxomerus basalis, is presented and illustrated. Adults of this species are photographed alive for the first time, including video recordings of larval and adult behaviour. Adult flies of both sexes visit Drosera (sundews) and show territorial behaviour around the plants, avoiding the dangerous sticky traps and demonstrating recognition of their larval host plant. Females lay eggs directly on non-sticky parts of the Drosera host plants, such as on the lower surface of the leaves and flower stalks, but apparently also on other plants growing in close proximity with the sundews.

Litter decomposition plays an important role in the carbon cycle and is affected by many factors in forest ecosystems. This study aimed to quantify the rhizosphere priming effect on litter decomposition in subtropical forest southwestern China. A litter decomposition experiment including control and trenching treatments was conducted using the litter bag method, and the litter decomposition rate was calculated by litter dry mass loss. Trenching did not change soil temperature, but increased the soil water content by 14.5%. In this study, the interaction of soil temperature and soil water content controlled the litter decomposition rate, and explained 87.4 and 85.5% of the variation in litter decomposition in the control and trenching treatments, respectively. Considering changes in soil environmental factors due to trenching, the litter decomposition rates were corrected by regression models. After correction, the litter decomposition rates of the control and trenching treatments were 32.47 ± 3.15 and 25.71 ± 2.72% year–1, respectively, in the 2-year period. Rhizosphere activity significantly primed litter decomposition by 26.3%. Our study suggested a priming effect of rhizosphere activity on litter decomposition in the subtropical forest. Combining previous interaction effect results, we estimated the contributions of total soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, total litter decomposition, and root respiration to soil respiration in the subtropical forest, and our new method of estimating the components of soil respiration provided basic theory for SOM decomposition research.

The frequency and intensity of harmful algal bloom (HAB) events have been increasing in many places around the world. Heterosigma akashiwo is a marine raphidophyte species known to cause HABs in many places across tropical and temperate climates. Studies of temperate strains have identified that H. akashiwo blooms are driven by mass activation of cysts which, for this species, can only form at <15°C temperatures. Although these temperatures do not occur in the tropics, there have been no comparative studies for tropical H. akashiwo. This study aimed to investigate whether tropical H. akashiwo can form cysts under warm temperatures, therefore having different responses from temperate strains. Results showed that tropical H. akashiwo were similar with temperate strains and could only form round cyst-like structures at 5°C but not 25°C. We also observed novel response of a decline and recovery in cell densities at 25°C. The decline was interrupted when the cultures were diluted, implying a tendency for H. akashiwo to rapidly spread and accumulate within surrounding waters, thereby facilitating blooms. This behaviour presents unique bloom concerns. Close monitoring of H. akashiwo distribution patterns is needed for better assessment of the bloom threat posed within tropical waters.

One of the many ecosystem services provided by dung beetles is that of secondary seed dispersal. This paper experimentally evaluates the effectiveness of this service using the chimpanzee–dung beetle seed dispersal system in Taï National Park, Côte d’Ivoire. The study focussed on the germination rate and success of four species of seeds contained in the faeces of Pan troglodytes verus: Dacryodes klaineana (Pierre) H.J. Lam, Diospyros mannii Hiern, Pycnanthus angolensis (Welw.) Warb., and Uapaca guineensis Muell. Arg. For each species, 600 seeds, half from chimpanzee faeces and half from mother trees, were sown in nurseries at depths of 0, 2, 5, 10, and 15 cm (i.e. 120 seeds per depth; 60 from chimp and 60 from mother trees). After germination, only the seeds of Uapaca guineensis and Diospyros mannii sown at 2 and 5 cm had a >14% rate (between 14.2 and 30.8%) of germination and seedling establishment, regardless of seed origin. An increase in the depth of seed burial appears to negatively affect the probability of seedling emergence and establishment. This study shows that dung beetles have positive impacts on seed fate. However, for these plant species, the chimpanzee’s role is limited to that of primary seed dispersal.

Daily heterothermy is a strategy employed by endothermic birds and mammals to reduce their energetic costs by lowering their metabolic rate. We recorded nocturnal and diurnal rectal temperatures in three Moroccan Gerbillus rodent species to determine the level of heterothermy. A decrease in body temperature from night to day was observed by an average (±SD) of 8.7 (±4.2) in G. gerbillus, 11.1 (±3.0) in G. amoenus, and 7.7 (±3.3)°C in G. sp.1, the first records of heterothermy in the three species. The findings support a prediction that daily heterothermy is found in mammals from arid and semi-arid regions, contributing to further knowledge of thermoregulation in desert rodents.

Forest fires pose an important threat to tropical rain-forest biodiversity. In the present study, we assessed ground layer (herb and shrub) communities in six differentially disturbed landscape plots in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, including primary and logged forest and once-, twice- and frequently-burnt forest. Overall, we recorded 175 species of herbs and shrubs; richness was highest in twice-burnt forest and lowest in logged forest. Vegetation and topographical variables including the percentage of the plot burnt and tree abundance were significant predictors of variation in composition. The main compositional gradient showed a clear distinction between subplots in unburnt versus burnt forest. A subset of subplots in burnt forest, however, clustered together with subplots from unburnt forest. These plots were located in a network of relatively unscathed forest along floodplains that persisted in the burnt-forest matrix. Small plant species associated with unburnt forest included several species of Dryopteridaceae, Marantaceae and Rubiaceae. Species associated with once- and twice-burnt forest included Mikania scandens (Compositae), Microlepia speluncae (Dennstaedtiaceae), Nephrolepis cf. biserrata (Nephrolepidaceae), Lygodium microphyllum (Schizaeaceae) and Hornstedtia cf. reticulata (Zingiberaceae). The frequently-burnt landscape plot was characterized by a high cover of the grass species Imperata cylindrica and the invasive exotic shrub Chromolaena odorata. Importantly, these species and other exotics had also invaded the once- and twice-burnt forest and represent a potential threat to forest recovery.

Cyclopes didactylus, the smallest of all anteaters, inhabits Amazonian and Atlantic forests with an apparently disjunct distribution. Yet, phylogeography reveals historical connections through the forests of the Northeast Region of Brazil. Its populations in this region are classified by the Red List of Threatened Species as Data Deficient and with a trend towards decline. However, Northeast Brazil has a large sampling gap, and the potential distribution of this species has yet to be evaluated. We investigated the potential distribution of C. didactylus to evaluate the hypothesis of a disjunct distribution between Amazonian and Atlantic forests and estimate the amount of protected area in its predicted distribution. We generated a Maxent distribution model using occurrence records, according to the new taxonomic revision of Cyclopes, and selected current bioclimatic variables to evaluate the continuity of the predicted distribution of the species in Northeast Brazil. We also performed past projections to assess historical connections and overlapped maps of protected areas onto their current distribution. Although its distribution is probably disjunct, at least one as-yet-unknown population may be present in the forests of Northeast Brazil, an area poorly protected. The results are useful for targeting field efforts in this under-sampled region.

Apes are important long-distance dispersers of large seeds in African tropical forests. Seed size and shape are likely to affect the ease of swallowing for an animal species. If an endozoochorous seed is larger than the digestive tract of an animal, the seed cannot be swallowed, and a round seed is more difficult to swallow than an elongated seed of the same length. In order to test if such a correlation exists between the seed size and its shape, we investigated the length and width of chimpanzee-dispersed seeds at the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. Among the 14 species of seeds, longer seeds had significantly narrower relative widths, and thus, they were more ovoid. Since the chimpanzee is the largest arboreal frugivore at Mahale, their food selection might have influenced the shape of larger seeds. The chimpanzee's selective consumption of such fruits with longer, elongated seeds may have facilitated the selective dispersal of such plant species in that area.

It has already been suggested that snake head triangulation might be related to mimicry of the head shape of vipers (Greene & McDiarmid 2005, and references therein). Until very recently, this hypothesis has never been experimentally tested. We first tested the hypothesis of snakes’ head shape as a dangerous signal to predators by use of plasticine models (Guimarães & Sawaya 2011). We suggested in that study that shape of the head does not confer advantage itself but may work in synergy with a set of traits including colour and behavioural displays that warn and discourage predator attacks.

A sample of 1834 leaves from 83 plants in 26 families was collected in tropical rain forest in Madagascar from three vertical strata: top of emergent trees (up to 37 m), top of trees in upper canopy (about 22 m), and shrubs and saplings at ground level. These leaves were examined for damage by seven different agents: fungi, epiphyllae, mechanical injury, galls, leaf miners, grazing insects and skeletonizing insects. Fungi affected more than 60% of the leaves and grazing insects 45–65%, with other agents each affecting 3–30%; fewer than 4% of the leaves escaped unscathed by any agent. Individual leaves were attacked by up to five agents. There was a sharp decline in proportion of leaves affected by fungi, leaf miners, epiphyllae and mechanical breakage with increasing category of severity. Grazing insects, mechanical injury, and perhaps galls, had greater impact at ground level than in the canopy, with fungi and skeletonizing insects showing the opposite pattern. Leaf miners had lower incidence in the canopy than elsewhere. The observed vertical stratification means that a tree not only needs to balance its defences to meet multiple threats in any stratum, but must adapt to a different suite of challenges during its lifetime. Attack by grazing insects and fungi are major challenges for saplings at ground level, but with increasing height above the ground fungal attack on leaves becomes more prevalent, but attack by grazing insects less so.

Barteria fistulosa and B. dewevrei, central African rain-forest trees, provide nesting cavities for Tetraponera aethiops and T. latifrons ants, respectively, which protect them against herbivores. To compare protection efficiency between these two symbioses, for 20 plants of each species in two sites in Gabon we measured the time elapsed before ants reached a focal leaf, for host leaves that were undisturbed, damaged (cut with scissors) or subjected to slight vibration (mimicking such damage), and for damaged leaves of the non-host Barteria species. Tetraponera aethiops displayed stronger protective behaviour than did T. latifrons. Time to reach a damaged host leaf (4.5 ± 2.6 min, mean ± SD) did not differ significantly from time to reach a leaf subjected to slight vibration (5.2 ± 3.0 min) for T. aethiops, but response to a leaf subjected to slight vibration (9.5 ± 1.9 min) was significantly slower than that to a damaged leaf (7.8 ± 1.9 min) for T. latifrons. The faster response of T. aethiops to slight vibration may have masked a response of this species to chemical signalling. Both ants reached damaged host leaves faster than damaged leaves of the non-host Barteria sp., indicating host plant specificity in ant responses.

Fine roots are specialized in nutrient and water acquisition and are critical for species performance and ecosystem functioning. Recent evidence has shown a broad root economic space determined by the orthogonal collaboration and conservation gradients related to resource acquisition and resource conservation, respectively. However, whether these gradients exist among tree species growing in degraded ecosystems where root growth is limited by soil conditions is much an open question. We measured six fine root traits (root diameter, specific root length, root dry matter content, root tissue density, branching intensity, and percentage of arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization) in 11 young tree species growing in sympatry for 9 years in degraded pastures in a tropical dry forest (TDF) in Colombia to determine (1) the covariation between fine root traits and (2) the patterns of belowground niche differentiation among 11 species coexisting under the same soil conditions. The covariation between fine root traits resembled the acquisitive-conservative, but not the collaboration gradient for this degraded habitat. The percentage of mycorrhizal colonization, a critical trait associated with the collaboration gradient, was unrelated to any fine root trait. Furthermore, we found a strong belowground differentiation among species, mainly across root diameter and branching intensity. Our results suggest that compacted degraded soils in TDF landscapes may affect the collaborative association with mycorrhizae, mostly allowing species differentiation along the do-it-yourself gradient. This finding suggests a hypothesis that needs to be tested with more species and sites. We discuss the importance of using root traits to aid species selection for restoration purposes.

The size distribution of a tree species gives important information about its regeneration strategy. For example, a tree species that regenerates primarily by sprouting will, in theory, have fewer seedlings than species that regenerate from seedlings, which generally form an L-shaped population size structure because of trade-offs in resource allocation between vegetative sprouting and sexual reproduction (Bellingham & Sparrow 2000, Loehle 2000). The results of some field studies suggest that the number of seedlings decreases with increasing dominance of multi-stemmed sprouters (Kruger et al. 1997, Zimmerman et al. 1994). In their study of four co-occurring species of Castanopsis (Fagaceae), Nanami et al. (2004) showed that species with a high frequency of sprouting adults had fewer juveniles and vice versa. This suggested that these species were able to co-exist as a result of trade-offs between investment in seedlings and sprouting. In this study, we investigated the sprouting trait of 17 co-occurring Fagaceae species in a Sumatran hill forest. The forest stand at this site shows a varied population structure across species, and hence, should have a varied life history. We tested the correlation between population skewness and proportion of sprouting trees, following the methods of Nanami et al. (2004). We hypothesized that the species that frequently form multi-stemmed sprouts will show a lower turnover of individuals because multi-stemmed architecture favours persistence (Bellingham & Sparrow 2009).
