Adaptive emotional regulation strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal, are related to better neuropsychological functioning in the general population. Individuals with PTSD demonstrate difficulty with both emotional regulation and cognitive performance that contribute to clinical presentation (e.g., negative mood, irritability). However the extent to which neuropsychological functioning is associated with emotion regulation, alone and in concert with common comorbid symptoms like depression, remains understudied in this population. Better understanding how specific neuropsychological functions relate to cognitive reappraisal could point to novel treatment targets given preliminary evidence that certain cognitive training techniques can improves neuropsychological and affective outcomes. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between clinical symptoms of PTSD and depression, working memory capacity, and cognitive reappraisal in Veterans with PTSD. We hypothesized that clinical symptoms and working memory capacity would interact to predict cognitive reappraisal, such that elevated depression would relate to worse cognitive reappraisal, particularly for individuals with poor working memory capacity.

Measures of working memory (symmetry span task), mental health symptomatology (Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and emotional regulation (Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ)) were collected in 38 Veterans. A regression analysis was conducted with total CAPS score, total BDI score, total symmetry span score, and the interaction between BDI score and symmetry span score as the independent variables and total ERQ cognitive reappraisal score as the dependent variable.

When examining each predictor independently, cognitive reappraisal was not associated with working memory (t=1.42, p=.165), but was significantly associated with PTSD (t=-3.17, p<.003) and depressive (t=-4.15, p<.001) symptom severity. The multiple regression model (F(4, 35)=4.45, p<.005, R2=.26) did not support the hypothesized relationship between working memory and depressive symptoms (t=0.56, p=.579). Depression independently predicted utilization of cognitive reappraisal in veterans with PTSD (t=2.43, p=.020) but PTSD symptom severity and working memory scores did not. However, additional investigation revealed that independently, greater PTSD symptom severity did predict less utilization of cognitive reappraisal (t=-3.17, p<.005).

While depressive symptoms did not moderate the relationship between working memory and cognitive reappraisal, depressive symptoms did best predict utilization of cognitive reappraisal in a population with PTSD. Contrary to the hypothesized outcome, neither working memory nor PTSD symptoms were significant predictors of cognitive reappraisal when controlling for depressive symptoms. This suggests that the phenomenon of lower cognitive reappraisal rates in individuals with PTSD may be due to the presence of depressive symptoms rather than traumatic stress symptoms or neuropsychological ability. Due to the sample size and homogeneous diagnosis of the current study it is possible that the predicted relationship between working memory, PTSD severity, and cognitive reappraisal was not observed due to low power or a restricted range. Further investigation specifically in clinical populations on factors that predict utilization of cognitive reappraisal could expand on these findings in populations experiencing other stress-based disorders.

Combat exposure is associated with higher rates of depressive symptoms, including anhedonia (i.e., a reduced ability to seek and experience rewards) and feelings of social disconnectedness. While these symptoms are commonly documented in combat-exposed Veterans following deployment, the cognitive mechanisms underlying this pathology is less well understood. Computational modeling can provides detailed mechanistic insights into complex cognition, which may be particularly useful to understand how social reward processing is altered following combat exposure. Here, we use a Bayesian learning model framework to address this question.

Thirty-three Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF)/ Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF)/Operation New Dawn (OND) Veterans (25 Male, 8 Female) between the ages of 18-65 years old (M = 41.61, SD = 10.49) participated in this study. In both classic/monetary and social reward conditions, participants completed a 2-arm bandit task, in which they must choose on each trial between two options (i.e., slot machine vs social partner) with unknown reward rates. While they received monetary outcomes in the classic condition, participants received compliments from different fictitious partners in the social condition. We first compared a learning-independent Win-stay/Lose-shift (WSLS) heuristic and either a Rescorla-Wagner Q-learning or a Bayesian learning model (Dynamic Belief Model/DBM) paired with a Softmax reward maximization policy. DBM+Softmax provided the best fit of the data for most participants (31/33). Individual DBM parameters of prior reward expectation, reward learning (i.e., perceived stability of reward rates), and Softmax reward maximization were estimated and compared across conditions.

Participants did not differ in their reward learning parameters across monetary and social conditions (t(30)= -0.70, p = 0.490), suggesting similar perception of reward stability in both modalities. However, higher Bayesian prior mean (i.e., initial belief of reward rate; t(30)= -2.31, p = 0.028, d=0.42) and greater reward maximization (i.e., Softmax parameter; t(30)= -2.26, p = 0.031, d=0.41) were observed in response to social vs monetary rewards. In the social reward condition, higher self-reported social connectedness was associated with greater model fit of our DBM model (i.e., smaller Bayesian Information Criterion/BIC; r = -0.38, p = 0.041). In this condition, those expecting higher reward rates when initiating reward exploration (those with higher DBM prior mean) endorsed lower self-esteem (Spearman's ρ = -0.43, p = 0.078) and lower positive affect (ρ = -0.32, p = 0.078).

A Bayesian learning modeling framework can characterize mechanistic differences in the processing of social vs non-social reward among combat-exposed Veterans. Individuals with higher social connectedness were more model-based in their performance, consistent with the notion that they are more likely to estimate and anticipate how much social peers have to offer. Combat-exposed individuals with lower self-esteem and positive affect appear to have higher initial expectations of reward from unknown partners, which could reflect greater need for mood and/or self-esteem repair in those individuals. Overall, Bayesian modeling of social reward behavior provides a useful quantitative framework to predict clinically relevant construct of functional outcomes in military populations.

To find how healthy college going participants SRS were affected by a customized Mind Body Intervention (MBI).

We performed a customized online tele-video course based MBI incorporating mindfulness and awareness training over a period of one month in 2021 to MBA students attending the Indian Institute of Management (IIM). Each subject was their own control. We used the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale (QO-BREF) social relationship sub-scores pre and post intervention to assess participant SRS.

277 MBA students from the IIM with a mean age of 26.89 ± 1.7 were analyzed. Of the 277 students, 90 (32.49%) were female. The MBI decreased the self-perceived Social Relationship score among 277 graduate students. The mean SRS before the intervention was 7.51 ± 1.7 while the mean SRS after was 6.9 ± 1.7. Univariate paired t-test showed a significant mean difference (t = 5.1, p<.001). On a multivariate linear-regression model, the SRS change estimate was 0.46, t-value was 9.3, p < 0.001; 95% confidence interval was 0.37 - 0.56; p-value <0.001.

An online tele-video based customized Mind Body Intervention decreased the self-perceived social relationship score among graduate students at the IIM during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The increasing complexity of social stress may be especially threatening to mental health during childhood and adolescence. One's skills in effectively coping with this stress may contribute to symptoms of pediatric anxiety and depression, a growing, significant, and pervasive public health concern. In addition to strategic skills, individual differences in coping may reflect differences in brain structure, including the white matter pathways that integrate frontal lobe networks with those involved in social functioning. Identifying the neurological substrates underlying anxiety and depression is an important way to delineate mechanisms underlying development of these disorders. Deterministic automated-fiber quantification (AFQ) is a technique that removes potential error from manual tracking of white matter, segregating tracts into distinct nodes—diminishing the effect of crossing fibers—and quantifying the number of fibers in a tract, allowing for assessment of connectivity across regions. Collectively, this investigation aims to quantify the interplay between anxiety, depression, coping with social stress, and white matter microstructure in children and adolescents.

Ninety-two healthy children and adolescents (8-17 years old; n=53 female, Mage=12.96; n=39 male, Mage=12.31) and a parent rated symptoms of anxiety and depression using the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC-III). Coping and stress reactivity were assessed using the Responses to Stress Questionnaire, Social Stress version. Children and adolescents also completed 64-direction DTI in a Siemens 3T Prisma scanner. White matter microstructure was quantified using AFQ; Fractional anisotropy (FA) values were extracted for 18 tracts, comprised of 100 nodes each.

Mean levels of parent- and self-reported anxiety and depression fell within the normative range, and children reported mild- to moderate social stress. Higher levels of social stress were associated with increased parent reported anxiety (r=.294, p=.002) and parent- and self-reported depression (r=.481, p<.001; r=.211, p=.034, respectively). Anxiety and depression were not significantly related to white matter microstructure; however, several specific links with coping were noted. Use of secondary control coping (e.g., cognitive restructuring) was associated with higher FA of the bilateral inferior fronto-occipital fasciculi (left IFOF r=.228, p=.027; right IFOF r=.299, p=.003) and left inferior longitudinal fasciculus (r=.269, p=.009); use of primary control coping (e.g., problem solving) was associated with higher FA of the bilateral uncinate fasciculi (left UF r=.216, p=.036; right UF r=.207, p=.045). Furthermore, use of primary and secondary control coping were associated with fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, whereas greater use of disengagement coping (e.g., wishful thinking) was associated with more depressive symptoms.

These findings highlight links among white matter microstructure in tracts integrating frontal with temporal and occipital regions, and adoption of adaptive (i.e., primary and secondary control) coping responses. This may suggest that strong connections between brain regions supports more of a modulatory than a neglecting coping strategy. Finding also replicate extant literature on the ties between coping style and psychosocial distress. Given that coping responses are amenable to intervention, capitalizing on these brain-behavior links during ongoing neuromaturation is worthy of future research, with a goal of reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression via the brain's support of adaptive coping.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a persistent neuroinflammatory disease of the central nervous system that affects young adults, and is pathologically characterized by multiple and distributed focal white matter lesions, although they are characteristically located in periventricular regions. Cognitive impairment occurs in all clinical forms of the disease, with great variability and great impact on the quality of life of patients. Recent research indicates that in addition to cognitive and physical deficits, they also have deficits in social cognition, such as Theory of Mind. Although social cognition in patients with multiple sclerosis has begun to be studied in recent years, there is still little knowledge about its impact in the early stages of the disease, when the load of injuries is low and physical disability is not yet present. A series of 7 cases of patients diagnosed with MS in follow-up by the Multiple Sclerosis polyclinic of the Institute of Neurology of the Hospital de Clínicas is presented.

Clinically stable patients with no recent urges and no cognitive complaint were included. They were evaluated with the ACE-R screening test and Theory of Mind tests: Reading the mind in the eyes and Faux Pas tests.

All patients presented normal ACE results, without indicators of cognitive impairment and poor performance in the emotion reading test. In two cases, poor yields in Faux Pas were also found.

Social cognition has a great impact on quality of life, and there are indicators of involvement in early stages of the disease in which other typical cognitive deficits are not yet evident, and may constitute the first indicator of deterioration. The evaluation and early detection of deficits in social cognition could contribute to the treatment and quality of life of patients.

Accurate processing of facial displays of emotion is critical for effective communication. A robust literature has documented impairment in the ability to recognize facial affect in people with traumatic brain injury (TBI), but research is scarce about memory for facial affect. Disruptions in recognizing and remembering the emotions of others can undermine relationship quality and may result in psychosocial dysfunction. Importantly, the extant literature indicates that facial affect recognition dissociates from other cognitive abilities such that it is likely a distinct neuronal process. Thus, explicit measurement of affect recognition and memory for emotions may be critical for implementing and refining rehabilitation interventions. The present study examined the relationship between recognition and memory for emotions using a novel computerized task and explored its associations with other cognitive abilities.

Participants were adults who were neurologically healthy (n = 31) or had a history of moderate to severe TBI (n = 26). The battery included the novel Assessment of Facial Affect Recognition and Memory (AFARM), Cambridge Face Memory Test (face memory without emotion), Wechsler Test of Adult Reading, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Judgment of Line Orientation, Oral Symbol Digit Modalities, Digit Span, FAS, Animal Fluency, and the Affect Intensity Measure (experienced emotion). Spearman correlations examined the relationship of AFARM performance with the test battery. Logistic regression models examined whether immediate-delay (ID-EM) and long-delay face emotion-memory (LD-EM) accounted for unique variance in group membership beyond recognition accuracy of facial affect and memory for faces.

AFARM demonstrated relationships with neuropsychological and mood variables in the expected directions across and within groups, with the strongest associations observed for memory for verbal information (rs = .51 to .58) and processing speed (rs = .48 to .57). Consistent with traditional list-learning tests, ID- and LD-EM were highly correlated (r = .85). Experienced affect intensity was inversely associated with ID-EM (r = -.29) and LD-EM (r = -.38) but not with recognition accuracy (r = -.10). Logistic regression examining ID-EM was significant, χ2(3) = 26.05, p < .001, Nagelkerke R2 = .49. ID-EM accounted for unique variance in group status (p = .006; OR = 0.65) after accounting for recognition accuracy and face memory. Similarly, the model examining LD-EM was significant χ2(3) = 27.70, p < .001, Nagelkerke R2 = .43; LD-EM was significant after accounting for other variables (p = .017; OR = 0.69).

The findings are consistent with the hypothesis that memory for emotions represents a unique component of social cognition that is separate from recognition. Accuracy in identifying emotions, face recognition memory, and memory for emotions are strongly related but not wholly redundant processes. Consistent with prior literature, subjective experience of emotion had substantial effects on objective performance tasks, indicating that an individual's intense experience of their own emotions can disrupt sensitivity to the emotions of others. Future research should assess the extent to which memory for emotions relates to psychosocial outcomes such as the quality and quantity of interpersonal relationships.

Previous research suggests that individuals with isolated Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (AgCC) have cognitive and psychosocial deficits including that of complex processing of emotions (Anderson et al., 2017) and their ability to verbally express emotional experiences (Paul et al., 2021). Additionally, research suggests individuals with AgCC show impaired recognition of the emotions of others (Symington et al., 2010), as well as diminished ability to infer and describe the emotions of others (Renteria-Vazquez et al., 2022; Turk et al., 2010). However, the nature of the empathic abilities of individuals with AgCC remains unclear in empirical research. Capacity for empathetic feelings and situational recognition in persons with AgCC were tested using the Multifaceted Empathy Test [MET] (Foell et al., 2018). We hypothesized that individuals with AgCC would have lower abilities for both cognitive and affective empathy than neurotypical controls.

Results from 50 neurotypical control participants recruited from MTurk Cloud were compared to responses from 19 AgCC participants with normal-range FSIQ (>80) drawn from the individuals with AgCC involved with the Human Brain and Cognition Lab at the Travis Research Institute. The research was completed through an online version of the MET. The MET uses a series of photographs of individuals displaying an emotion. To measure cognitive empathy, the participants are asked to pick the correct emotion being displayed with three distractors for each item. To measure affective empathy, they are then asked on a sliding scale, “how much do you empathize with the person shown” (1 = Not at all, 7 = Very much).

Results of a MANOVA showed a trend for a significant overall difference between individuals with AgCC and controls for empathic abilities F(1, 67) = 2.59, p-value = .082, with persons with AgCC showing less empathy overall. Follow-up one-way ANOVAs showed that individuals with AgCC scored significantly lower in cognitive empathy F(1, 67) = 4.63, p-value = .035, ηp2 = .065; however, affective empathy was not significantly different between groups F(1, 67) = .537, p-value = .466, ηp2 = .008.

Results suggest that adults with AgCC have a diminished ability to give cognitive labels to the emotional states of others compared to neurotypical controls. However, contrary to our hypothesis, participants with AgCC had affective responses to the pictures of the emotional states of others which were similar to neurotypical controls. Recent research has shown that individuals with AgCC have difficulty inferring and elaborating on the more complex cognitive, social, and emotional aspects of simple animations (Renteria-Vazquez et al., 2022; Turk et al., 2010). Cognitive empathy would require this form of elaborative thinking, even when affective empathy is normal. Similarly, Paul et al. (2021) described alexithymia in persons with AgCC as difficulty in expressing emotions linguistically, but found similar endorsements of emotional experience when compared to neurotypical controls. This study provides further evidence to suggest the corpus callosum facilitates the ability to cognitively label emotions but not necessarily the ability to experience emotions affectively.

People differ in their propensity to engage in risky behaviors. Numerous factors such as cognition and personality have been utilized in predicting risk-taking, but little is known about the influence of stable emotional competencies, such as Emotional Intelligence (EI), in risk-taking. EI is defined as the ability and capacity to understand, perceive, and manage one's own, as well as others', emotions. However there has been little published research on the effect of ability emotional intelligence in engaging in risk- taking behavior. We hypothesized that those with higher emotional intelligence ability scores would demonstrate higher and more optimal risk-taking propensity. Furthermore, as prior research has demonstrated that males engage in more risk-taking behaviors, we accounted for sex differences within our analysis.

One-hundred and twelve healthy adults completed this study, including 56 females (Mage=21.7, SD=5.8) and 56 males (Mage=21.5, SD=3.2). The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) was used to assess total EI ability while the Balloon Analog Risk Task (BART) was used to assess risk-taking propensity. We specifically analyzed adjusted number of pumps on unexploded balloons throughout the BART to account for the increased risk. We conducted Pearson correlations and a multiple regression to assess the if ability emotional intelligence and gender significantly predicted risk-taking propensity.

There was a significant correlation between total emotional intelligence ability score and adjusted number of pumps on the BART for females, r(55)=.362, p = .006, but not for males r(55)=.053, p=.701, suggesting that females who score higher in emotional intelligence ability also had a higher risk-taking propensity. Due to these findings, we conducted a multiple regression to assess if ability emotional intelligence and gender significantly predict risk-taking propensity on the BART. The results of the regression indicated the two predictors explained 9.0% of the variance (R2 =.09, F(2,108)=5.32, p<.01). However, it was found that ability emotional intelligence significantly predicted risk-taking propensity (β = .23, p<.05), but not sex (β = -.17, p=.06). There was no sex x EI interaction.

Higher ability emotional intelligence was significantly related to greater risk-taking propensity, but this was only observed for females. However, the lack of significance of sex in significantly predicting risk-taking may just be due to lower statistical power in the study. Importantly, the adjusted number of pumps for the participants in this sample was generally far below the mid-point for popping balloons, suggesting that the higher scores observed here represent more optimal decision performance rather than just greater risk. Thus, greater EI may reflect greater capacity to learn from reward and punishment feedback and apply that learning to optimize performance. Future research should look at the effect of emotional intelligence training in improving optimal risk-taking, particularly for populations known for engaging in risky behaviors such as those with mTBI.

Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (AgCC) is the congenital absence of all or part of the corpus callosum. Previous research has demonstrated that isolated AgCC results in a pattern of cognitive and psychosocial deficiencies, even when FSIQ is in the normal range (FSIQ > 80; Brown & Paul, 2019). Importantly, individuals with AgCC have been shown to provide narratives containing fewer emotional words, social interactions, and mental inferences on the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Turk et al., 2009). Similarly, research has suggested deficits in the elaborative imagination of persons with AgCC when they are providing narrative descriptions of simple animations (Renteria-Vasquez et al., 2021). Such findings raise questions about aesthetic perception in AgCC. While previous research has demonstrated differences in aesthetic perception among other neuropsychological populations (e.g. Parkinson's Disease; Lauring et al., 2019), there is no research reported regarding aesthetic appreciations in AgCC. The present study employed the Assessment of Art Attributes (AAA; Chatterjee et al., 2010) to compare the conceptual and perceptual aspects of aesthetic perception of persons with AgCC to neurotypical control participants. Prior investigation by Bromberger and colleagues (2011) utilized the AAA to examine the aesthetic perception of persons with right hemisphere lesions, finding deviations in judgements of abstractness, symbolism, realism, and animacy– all classified as “conceptual attributes.” Based on these findings, it was predicted that individuals with AgCC would rate paintings differently than neurotypical controls on conceptual attributes, but not on perceptual attributes.

Thirteen persons with AgCC and 49 neurotypical individuals completed the AAA. After completing measures of artistic experience and colorblindness, participants rated 24 paintings on 14 attributes. Balance, color saturation, color temperature, depth, simplicity, and stroke made up the “perceptual scales,” while abstractness, animacy, emotion, objective accuracy, realism, interest, and preference made up the “conceptual scales.”

Following Bromberger and colleagues (2011), average ratings from all control participants were used to rank the 24 paintings for each scale. Spearman's rank-order correlations were then conducted between the rankings of each participant and the average of the controls for each scale. Spearman's rho coefficients were then compared between AgCC and control groups using t-tests, controlling for multiple comparisons. As hypothesized, the AgCC group had significant deviations from the average of the controls (lower rho values) on several conceptual attributes: Abstractness (p = .004, d = .11), emotion (p < .001, d = .12), and interest (p < .001, d = .18), whereas individuals with AgCC deviated on only one perceptual attribute: Simplicity (p = .003, d = .12).

While generally unremarkable in the sensory aspects, persons with AgCC demonstrated greatest differences in three important conceptual aspects of aesthetic perception. This outcome suggests that such higher-order aesthetic appreciations require interhemispheric interactivity. These results further support the hypothesis that decreased elaborative imagination is a fundamental component of AgCC.

Youth with conduct problems (CP) may be more likely to exhibit aggression in the context of peer relations. Indices of dorsolateral prefrontal cortical functioning (DPCF), such as inhibitory control and planning, may be implicated in the behavioral presentation of CP. Further, youth living in violent communities may be more likely to use aggression as a means for problem-solving. However, little is known about how CP interact with DPCF indices to predict aggressive behaviors specifically in the context of environments with high levels of community violence. As such, the present study sought to use a multi-informant approach to examine relations between CP, DCPF, and different types of aggression among youth living in neighborhoods affected by community violence.

Participants were 104 children (M=9.93±1.22 years; 50% male; 96% African American, 4% Latinx) who resided in neighborhoods with elevated rates of poverty and crime. DPCF was indexed by Stockings of Cambridge planning task and caregiver-reported inhibitory control from the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function. Teachers completed the Child and Adolescent Symptom Inventory-4R to assess youth conduct disorder (CD) symptoms and the Teacher Checklist to assess proactive (bullying, planful aggression) and reactive (angry, emotionally labile aggression) aggression.

Multiple regression analyses were conducted with aggressive behaviors as the dependent variable, and child sex, age, CD symptoms, and the CD × DPCF (i.e., CD × inhibitory control; CD × planning) interaction terms as predictors. Inhibitory control moderated the relation between CD symptoms and reactive (CD × inhibitory control, B = -1.39, p = .004) but not proactive (CD × inhibitory control, B = -.64, p = .063) aggression. Post-hoc probing of the CD symptoms × inhibitory control interaction term predicting reactive aggression revealed a significant slope for youth with both high (B = 1.65, p < .001) and low (B = 4.48, p < .001) levels of inhibitory control. Planning does not significantly moderate the relation between CD symptoms and proactive or reactive aggression, though there is a positive main effect of teacher reported CD symptoms on both proactive (B = 2.44, p < .001) and reactive (B = 2.36, p < .001) aggression.

This study is the first to consider the relations of CP, DPCF processes, and subtypes of aggression among youth living in environments with high rates of community violence. Among youth with CP, high levels of inhibitory control may be associated with lower rates of reactive aggression in the context of peer relations. As such, problem-solving interventions targeting processes related to DPCF, such as inhibitory control, may be useful among youth living in neighborhoods high in community violence who exhibit CP. Strengthening these cognitive processes may result in better behavioral outcomes and peer relations.

Presurgical psychological screening (PPS) is a procedure for mitigating possible unfavorable outcomes after spinal surgery. Although the effectiveness of PPS on degenerative spinal diseases has been investigated in Western studies, a potential cultural influence on PPS is still unknown. This study thus aims to explore the experiences of Taiwanese people before spinal surgery and tries to establish culture-specific components of PPS in Taiwan.

A total of five participants aged from 44–69 with degenerative spinal diseases were eligible in this study. All participants visited a neurosurgical outpatient clinic for potential surgical treatment, and each participant underwent an one-hour semi-structured interview before surgery. The demographical information, medical history, psychological status (e.g., personality traits and emotional disturbances) and considerations to make a surgical decision, were recorded and further analyzed following the rule of grounded theory.

Four major components with 21 sub-components were reported when deciding to receive a surgical treatment for their spinal diseases, including disease-related considerations, medical information, self-concept and interpersonal relations. In terms of disease-related aspects, patients concerned about etiology, symptomatology, impacts, coping strategies and rehabilitation methods. As for medical information, patients paid more attention on medical compliance, the relationship with medical system, attitude for treatment, expectation to surgical outcomes, medical decisions and medical information. As for the self-concept, patients considered more on the impacts of disease on self-concept, strategies of emotional regulations and personality traits. In terms of interpersonal relations, patients reported more on the supportive resources, patterns of interpersonal activities and impacts of interpersonal relations on medical decisions. Additionally, other specific factors, such as past negative experiences (e.g., chronic insomnia, experiences of psychological counseling), litigation, physical punishment in childhood and social roles, were also reported.

Like previous findings, our results supported that the interpersonal relations and doctor-patient relationship in PPS were important considerations before surgery, while we further evidenced that influences of family members on medical decision is determinant and unique in this culture.

Expertise in social perception, defined as the ability to decode another person's mental states based on basic behavioral signals (Allison et al., 2000; Beauchamp et al., 2008). The Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) is a social-perception task of theory of mind (ToM, Meinhardt-Injac et al., 2020) and used to test different clinical disorders, like autism spectrum disorders (ASD, Peñuelas-Calvo et al., 2019). RMET has been used to demonstrate gender, cultural, genetic, and personality trait influences on ToM and elucidate its neurobiological mechanisms (Adams et al., 2010). In Taiwan, there has few sensitive tools to evaluate children's social perception, thus the purpose of this study is to examine psychometric properties of child's version of RMET in Taiwan (RMET-C-TW) and cross-cultural comparisons.

RMET-C (Baron-Cohen et al., 2001) was used to assess mental state/emotion recognition (Vellante et al., 2013). It consists of photographs of the eye regions of 28 faces. Participants were asked to make a choice between four words presented, choose the one that best described for feel or think. One point was given to each correctly response. RMET-C-TW was double-translation of words to ensure cultural applicability in Taiwan. This study included both a normative sample and criteria sample. The normative sample consisted of 769 (385 male, 384 female) 3 to 9 grades students from northern Taiwan. The normative sample completed both the RMET-C-TW and Chinese Vocabulary Test (CVT) in groups at their own schools, the CVT was to ensure that participants had sufficient vocabulary skills to understand the options provided in REMT-C-TW. The criteria sample were collected from 46 matched, school-aged children with ASD (age mean = 10.52, SD = 1.62; IQ = 108.39, SD = 11.75), and normally developing controls (age mean = 10.66, SD=1.68; IQ = 109.70, SD = 12.12). These two groups were administered the (1) WISC-III (2) CVT (3) RMET-C-TW and (4) ToM Test.

The results showed that RMET-C-TW had acceptable test-retest reliability and internal consistency (test-retest reliability = .71, Cronbach α= .40). There were significant gender and age difference in the performance of RMET-C-TW, example female, older participants performed better. Item analysis showed 93% of items in the RMET-C-TW had cross- cultural consistency in the distribution of respondents' choices. In criteria sample, the control group's RMET-C-TW scores significantly better than ASD group. Physician diagnosis (r = .49, p < .01) and high-order ToM's scores (r = .33, p < .01) were significantly associated with RMET-C-TW scores.

RMET-C-TW has acceptable reliability and good developmental validity (age-related growth) in three to nine grades, and future can be extended to different age and clinicians to understand the development of social perception. Therefore, RMET-C-TW can be used as an initial screening and cross-cultural tool for ASD. In addition, EF is divided into cold and hot, and hot EF makes a unique contribution to ToM in ASD (Kouklari et al., 2017), thus this tool may also be used in the future to understand the association of hot EF with social perception.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing face masks is an important strategy to prevent people from infection, allowing people to find a balance between maintaining social interaction and keeping social distancing. Since face mask might disrupt information processing of social cognition, it could lead to less functional connectivity of occipital face area, fusiform face area, and superior temporal sulcus which interrupted the development of medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) for mentalizing. However with better executive function (EF) people could process facial stimuli more efficiently. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of wearing face masks on preschoolers' facial emotion recognition, and the factors which might affect the development of facial emotion recognition.

In this study, preschoolers (N=44, 24 boys and 20 girls, aged 3 to 5 years-old) recruited from the community were asked to identify the emotions expressed in the 36 stimulus photos, each randomly presented with six emotion (happy, sad, angry, surprised, fearful, and disgusted). The total face stimulus photos were 2 (face sex) × 6 emotions × 3 facial features (full face, presenting upper counterparts of face with face mask covering the mouth, and presenting lower counterparts of face with hat covering the eyes). The EF of preschoolers and their parent were also evaluated to examine whether EF could predict the correct score of facial emotion recognition.

It was found that the correct score of emotion recognition increased with age. The recognition with full face feature were better than with upper feature and lower feature. When recognizing happy and disgust, participant tended to use lower features. When recognizing sad and angry, participant tended to use upper features. The EF of preschoolers could predict the correct score of emotion recognition. The EF of parents could predict the preschoolers' correct score of positive emotion recognition.

The ability of facial emotion recognition evolved rapidly in preschool age with the accumulation of social interaction experience and improved the development of auditory and visual subcortical cortex and the connectivity of MPFC. This study examined the emotion recognition ability of preschoolers and found that the face features preschoolers used to recognized emotion were consist with previous study. However, when the presenting stimulus were covered by face mask or hat, it was more difficult for preschoolers to recognizing emotion which would result in difficulty of understanding the social context and development of MPFC for mentalizing. In this study, it was found that preschooler's with better EF could be more efficiently recognizing facial emotion. Also, parents with better EF showed more positive emotion in daily life which lead to their children more sensitive to positive facial emotion.

Theory suggests that symptoms of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD; e.g., hyperactivity and impulsivity) may be associated with social cognition deficits characterised by fast but erroneous processing of social cues. Despite this, prior research has provided mixed evidence for (a) deficits in social cognition skills and (b) a link between such deficits and poor social outcomes among children with ADHD. We sought to clarify this ambiguity by (a) exploring variation in social cognition skills across a mixed clinical and normative population and (b) examining the demographic, clinical, and dimensional symptom profiles of children presenting with reduced social cognition skills characterised by fast but erroneous processing.

Participants were children and adolescents (N = 1,097) aged 4–18 years (M = 9.02, SD = 2.72) assessed using the Paediatric Evaluation of Emotions Relationships and Socialisation (PEERS), a child-direct, ecologically sensitive measure of social cognition. Latent profile analysis of standardised social cognition scores and response times for incorrect encoding of social cues (error-response times) was used to identify social cognition profiles. Differences between each profile in terms of demographics, clinical profiles, symptom dimensions, and social outcomes were explored.

Four social cognition profiles were identified. Two profiles were identified as being of particular interest: one which captured typically developing children (TDC; n = 727), and another which was characterised by lower social cognition scores and faster error-response times (impulsive responding; n = 201). The remaining profiles captured the response styles of younger participants (n = 152) and children with more pervasive social cognition deficits (n = 17). Comparison of the two profiles of interest revealed a number of statistically significant differences (p < .05). Compared to the TDC group, the impulsive responding group had: higher SDQ scores for hyperactivity, conduct, emotional, and peer problems; lower IQ and prosocial scores, and; greater parent-perceived social function deficits. Children in this group were also more likely to be male and from a lower SES background. Clinically, 18% of children in the impulsive responding group had an ADHD diagnosis, and 14% had at lease one mental health diagnosis other than ADHD.

A large minority of children (~18%) demonstrate social cognition deficits characterised by fast but erroneous processing of social cues. Although the explorative nature of this study does not allow conclusions to be made about the causes of such deficits, it is reasonable to conclude that they are not reducible to clinically significant symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity — less than 1/5 of the children in this group had an ADHD diagnosis, and 2/3 of children in this group had no mental health diagnosis at all. Child-direct tools designed to detect individual differences in social cognition skills may be beneficial in identifying individuals who will benefit from social support or interventions aimed at reducing social cognition deficits despite being missed by more traditional screening measures (e.g., clinical diagnoses). Future work should focus on understanding the causal relationships between symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity, fast but erroneous processing of social cues, social cognition skills, and social outcomes for this group of children.

Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder, caused by vitamin B1 insufficiency. KS is characterized by severe declarative amnesia. Often, also executive disorders are present. Emotion recognition and theory of mind are gold-standard measures of social cognition. Moral decision making is often assessed by means of moral dilemmas. Surprisingly social cognition and moral decision making has received hardly any attention in research on KS, although the severity of behavioural problems in KS suggest possible problems in both domains. The aim of this study was therefore to broadly assess social cognition and moral decision-making capacities in patients with KS.

20 KS patients and 20 age-, education-, and gender-matched healthy controls were assessed on standardized tests for social cognition, namely the mini-Social Cognition and Emotional Assessment battery (mini-SEA), and a specialized version of the Sally-Anne Test. Moral decision making was assessed by means of the Moral Behaviour Inventory (MBI) for everyday moral dilemmas, and ten cartoons of abstract moral dilemmas. For moral decision making, “yes” and “no” responses were scored, together with a scoring for moral reasoning according to the Kohlberg stages of moral maturity.

KS patients have large impairments in both cognitive and affective aspects of social cognition. Their ability to recognize emotions, take the perspective of others, and understand socially awkward situations is vastly compromised. While KS patients were able to replicate the Sally Anne storyline, their task performance was on chance level. Regarding moral decision making, there was a tendency to more frequently carry out the moral dilemma. Moral maturity, as indexed by means of their reasoning behind the decision was of a lower level. Of interest, moral immaturity could find its origin already before the onset of the KS diagnosis, as suggested by elevated premorbid levels of delinquent behavior.

Both social cognition and moral decision making are compromised in KS patients. Specifically social cognitive disorders are the direct result of KS, and are likely to strongly relate to social and neuropsychiatric issues in KS. Moral decision making was more likely to be already of a lower level of maturity, based on a strong relationship between premorbid delinquency and moral immaturity in KS patients. This study highlights the importance to properly index social cognition in neuropsychological assessments for individuals with a possible KS diagnosis

Larger social networks are linked to better cognitive function. However, little is known about the association of cognitive function with the composition of these networks in terms of the varying levels of closeness and supportive relationships. The present study explored whether social network size at different levels was differentially associated with cognitive function in a group of community-dwelling older adults.

119 older adults (Mage= 70.71) from the Maine Aging Behavior Learning Enrichment Study completed a neuropsychological test battery measuring language, verbal memory, visuospatial memory, working memory, executive function, and processing speed abilities. The number and closeness of participants' relationships was measured using a Hierarchical Mapping Technique based on the Social Convoy model, in which participants included the names of people in their relational network within inner (closest), middle (close), and outer concentric circles.

Correlational analyses found that social network size at the total and middle-to-outer levels were statistically associated with education and better performance on measures of language, verbal memory, visuospatial memory, and executive function. However, no relationship emerged between the size of the innermost network level and cognitive function. Furthermore, statistically significant findings did not survive adjustments for the effect of education.

Broader levels of support, rather than greater intimacy, were statistically associated with better cognitive performance. Consistent with previous research, greater education was associated with larger social networks. Future research is needed to understand whether higher levels of education or other factors mediate the observed relationship.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) subtypes have been shown to differentially impact psychiatric symptom presentation, clinical features, and functional abilities. While there is extensive research regarding MDD subtypes and clinical characteristics, there has been limited information regarding the relationship between MDD subtypes and neurocognitive functioning. In particular, the neurocognitive impact of the subtype of treatment resistant depression (TRD), defined as MDD that is unresponsive to treatment, is unknown. The aim of this preliminary study was to address this gap by characterizing the neurocognitive profile of TRD. We characterized the performance of older adults with TRD on measures across multiple neurocognitive domains, and explored whether performance varied based on age and education.

Data utilized were drawn from a broader NIMH-funded, randomized, controlled study conducted at the University of New Mexico that investigated the clinical and cognitive outcomes of varying pulse amplitudes during acute electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in adults with MDD. Participants in the study were age 50+ with a diagnosis of MDD, and further delineated by subtype as TRD. For this analysis, we utilized demographic and baseline neurocognitive data collected prior to start of treatment for those diagnosed with MDD, recurrent, severe (TRD). Neurocognitive measures included the Delis Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) Verbal Fluency and Color-Word Interference Subtests, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R), and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale 4th Edition (WAIS-IV) Digit Spans. Demographic-adjusted scaled scores were computed, and descriptive statistics were used to characterize the demographic and neurocognitive features of the sample. Multiple Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to investigate difference in performance across neurocognitive measures based on level of education, with age as a covariate.

The sample (n = 42) had a mean age of 65 (SD=8), education level between12 and 14 years, 66.6% were female and 93% were Caucasian. DKEFS Verbal Fluency Category Switching Total Switching Accuracy fell in the Average range (Mean SS=9.5, SD=3.1), and Color Word Inhibition Total Completion Time fell in the Average range (Mean SS=8.5, SD=3.3). HVLT-R Total Recall Correct fell in the Mildly Impaired range (Mean T=35.5, SD=9.9) and Delayed Recall Correct fell in the Mildly to Moderately Impaired range (Mean T=32.9, SD=11.0). WAIS-IV Digit Span fell in the Average range (Mean SS=9.5, SD=2.2). Results indicated that age did not adjust outcomes on the neurocognitive variables, Wilks's λ=0.63, F(6, 23)=2.13, p=0.08. We found no evidence for significant effect of level of education on neurocognitive functioning when controlling for the covariate of age, Wilks's λ=-0.16, F(36, 103.7)=1.47, p=0.07.

To our knowledge, this is one of two studies to examine neurocognitive functioning in patients with TRD. The analysis indicated generally intact performance in the neurocognitive domains of executive function (inclusive of verbal fluency, cognitive flexibility, and inhibition), auditory attention and working memory, and Impaired performance on indices of verbal learning and memory. Age did not impact performance on neurocognitive measures, and there was no significant effect for level of education. Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and further explicate the neurocognitive profile of TRD.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an effective treatment for individuals with pharmacoresistant major depressive disorder (MDD), yet identifying which patients best respond remains an important area of inquiry. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) serves as a screen for psychological distress, providing measures across three separate domains (e.g., somatization, depression, and anxiety) and one composite score (i.e., global severity index). The psychometric properties of the BSI-18 have been validated across multiple studies; however, it has sparsely been used to track changes in patient symptoms in response to intervention. Assessing patient symptom severity across these domains is imperative since these symptoms can negatively influence cognitive functioning. Accordingly, the current study utilized the BSI-18 to measure psychological distress across these different domains in patients receiving TMS treatment. We hypothesized that all domains of the BSI-18 would see a significant decrease after treatment, that elevated scores in specific domains would predict a less favorable response to treatment, and that measurement of depressive symptoms will be consistent across measures of similar scope.

Veterans (n=94) with MDD and met standard clinical TMS criteria were administered the BSI-18 before and after receiving an adequate dose of treatment (e.g., 30 sessions). Paired Samples T-test were used to compare the pre-treatment and post-treatment scores across domains.

The results of paired sample t-tests indicated a statistically significant reduction in measures of global psychological distress (t(93) = 7.99, p < .001, Cohen's d =.82), as well as depressive (t(93) = 8.34, p < .001, d = .86), anxious (t(93) = 7.64, p < .001, d = .79), and somatic symptoms (t(92) = 5.29, p < .001, d = .55) after receiving treatment. Individuals with elevated levels of anxiety (e.g., BSI-A>63) saw a significant reduction in depressive (t(62) = 8.15, p < .001, d = 1.03), anxious (t(62) = 8.34, p < .001, d = 1.05) and somatic (t(61) = 4.94, p < .001, d = .63) symptoms. Lastly, two measures of depressive symptoms, the BSI-D and PHQ-9, had a statistically significant strong, positive relationship before (r=.66) and after (r=.88) treatment (all n=65 and p<.001).

The BSI-18 can detect changes in different domains of psychological distress as a function of TMS treatment. Unexpectedly, TMS patients with elevated levels of anxiety responded well to treatment despite comorbid anxiety often being associated with less favorable outcomes in treatment trials. The positive relationship of the BSI-D and PHQ-9 before and after treatment suggests the use of the BSI as a valid, additional measure of depressive symptoms.

While much research has demonstrated a relationship between depression and cognitive deficits, most studies have neglected to include measurements of performance validity. The very small number of studies that have examined this relationship when accounting for performance validity have found that the relationship between depression and cognition is small or nonsignificant. The current study examined the relationship between depression (assessed through both clinical interview and self-report symptom measures) and multiple domains of cognition after accounting for noncredible performance on neuropsychological testing.

Participants were veterans referred for outpatient clinical evaluation. Among other tests that varied across patients, the neuropsychological battery included: California Verbal Learning Test - second edition (CVLT-II) total immediate recall across trials 1–5, short delay free recall, and long delay free recall; Trail Making Test; FAS and Animal Fluency; Rey–Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCF) copy and 3-minute delay recall; and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) categories completed, total errors, and percent perseverative errors. These tests represent domains that have previously been examined in relation to depression (e.g., memory, processing speed, executive functioning). Evaluations were conducted for clinical purposes, so that some individuals who were not administered certain tests have missing data. The first set of regression analyses (N=206) included age, sex, and education at Step 1, Beck Depression Inventory-2 (BDI-2) total score at Step 2, and pass or failure of Trial 1 of the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) at Step 3 as predictors of performance on the 12 test indices. The second set of regression analyses (N=559) mirrored the first but with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) diagnosis at Step 2 instead.

In the first set of analyses, after including TOMM in the model, only the relationship between BDI-2 and verbal fluency remained significant, but did not survive Bonferroni correction (p<.004). In the second set of analyses, before including the TOMM, MDD diagnosis was significantly related only to worse performance on Trails A and CVLT-II Short and Long Delay Free Recall, with small effect sizes (rp=.06–.15). When TOMM Trial 1 was included in the model, MDD diagnosis became a nonsignificant predictor of CVLT-II Long Delay Free Recall but remained a significant predictor for Trails A and CVLT-II Short Delay Free Recall (p<.05). After Bonferroni correction (p<.004), with TOMM Trial 1 included in the model, MDD diagnosis remained a significant predictor only of CVLT-II Short Delay Free Recall, with a small effect size (rp=.17).

After accounting for noncredible performance, there was little evidence for a relationship between depression diagnosis or symptoms and many cognitive domains. These results suggest that previously reported effects of depression on cognition are not mainly due to underlying neurological mechanisms, but rather to motivational factors. Future research could focus on the potential psychological mechanisms (e.g., negative attitudes, expectancy bias, low motivation, etc.) driving the relationship between depression and low effort on cognitive testing. If replicated, the current findings could be valuable to clinicians treating depressed individuals who have concerns about their cognitive functioning, by indicating psychoeducation and reassurance.

Eliciting perceived cognitive complaints is a routine part of a clinical neuropsychological evaluation, presumably because complaints are informative of underlying pathology. However, there is no strong empirical support that subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) is actually related to objective cognitive impairment as measured by neurocognitive tests. Instead, internalizing psychopathology is thought to predominately influence the endorsement of SCI. Specifically, individuals with greater symptoms of depression and anxiety, when accounting for comorbidities, have a higher disposition to overestimate their degree of cognitive impairment as compared to objective testing. Yet, there are few existing studies that have determined which factors influence both SCI and the discrepancy between subjective and objective cognitive impairment in general outpatient populations. The current study examined the relationship between subjective and objective cognitive impairment in a clinically diverse sample of outpatients. We additionally explored the associations between SCI and relevant intrapersonal factors including internalizing psychopathology, number of medical comorbidities, and demographics. Finally, we quantified the degree of discrepancy between subjective and objective impairment and examined this discrepancy in relation to the intrapersonal factors.

The sample comprised 142 adult women and men (age range 18–79 years) seen in an outpatient neuropsychology clinic for a diverse range of referral questions. Scores on the cognition portion of the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) were used to index SCI. A composite score from 14 measures across various domains of cognitive functioning served as an objective measure of cognitive functioning. Internalizing psychopathology was measured via a standardized composite of scores from screening measures of anxiety and depression. Medical comorbidities were indexed by the number of different ICD diagnostic categories documented in patients' medical records. Demographics included age, sex, race, and years of formal education. Objective-subjective discrepancy scores were computed by saving standardized residuals from a linear regression of neurocognitive test performance on the WHODAS 2.0 scores.

A hierarchical linear regression revealed that objective cognitive impairment was not significantly related to SCI (p > .05), explaining less than 2% of the variance in SCI ratings. Likewise, participants' demographics (age, sex, education, race) and number of comorbidities were not significantly related to their SCI ratings, explaining about 6% of the variance. However, participants' level of internalizing psychopathology was significantly associated with SCI (F[10, 131] = 4.99, p < .001), and explained approximately 20% of the variance in SCI ratings. Similarly, the degree of discrepancy between subjective and objective cognitive impairment was primarily influenced by internalizing psychopathology (F[9, 132] = 5.20, p < .001, R2 = 21%) and largely unrelated to demographics and number of comorbidities, which explained about 6% of the variance.

These findings are consistent with prior research suggesting that SCI may be more indicative of the extent of internalizing psychopathology rather than actual cognitive impairment. Taken together, these results illuminate potential treatment and diagnostic implications associated with assessing perceived cognitive complaints during a neuropsychological evaluation.
