A distribution on a Heisenberg type group of homogeneous dimension Q is a biradial kernel of type α if it coincides with a biradial function, homogeneous of degree α — Q, and smooth away from the identity. We prove that a distribution is a biradial kernel of type α, 0 < α < Q, if and only if its Gelfand transform, defined on the Heisenberg fan, extends to a smooth even function on the upper half plane, homogeneous of degree −α/2. A similar result holds for radial kernels on the Heisenberg group.

A Riccati inequality involving the Ricci curvature can be used to deduce many interesting results about the geometry and topology of manifolds. In this note we use it to present a short alternative proof to a theorem of Ambrose.

Let (M, G) be a pair of groups, in which M is a normal subgroup of G such that G/M and M/Z(M, G) are of orders pm and pn. respectively. In 1998, Ellis proved that the commutator subgroup [M, G] has order at most pn(n + 2 m−1)/2.

In the present paper by assuming /[M, G] = pn(n+2m−1)/2, we determine the pair (M, G). An upper bound is obtained for the Schur multiplier of the pair (M, G), which generalizes the work of Green (1956).

An automorphism group of a graph is said to be s-regular if it acts regularly on the set of s-arcs in the graph. A graph is s-regular if its full automorphism group is s-regular. For a connected cubic symmetric graph X of order 2pn for an odd prime p, we show that if p ≠ 5, 7 then every Sylow p-subgroup of the full automorphism group Aut(X) of X is normal, and if p ≠3 then every s-regular subgroup of Aut(X) having a normal Sylow p-subgroup contains an (s − 1)-regular subgroup for each 1 ≦ s ≦ 5. As an application, we show that every connected cubic symmetric graph of order 2pn is a Cayley graph if p > 5 and we classify the s-regular cubic graphs of order 2p2 for each 1≦ s≦ 5 and each prime p. as a continuation of the authors' classification of 1-regular cubic graphs of order 2p2. The same classification of those of order 2p is also done.

To each filter ℱ on ω, a certain linear subalgebra A(ℱ) of Rω, the countable product of lines, is assigned. This algebra is shown to have many interesting topological properties, depending on the properties of the filter ℱ. For example, if ℱ is a free ultrafilter, then A(ℱ) is a Baire subalgebra of ℱω for which the game OF introduced by Tkachenko is undetermined (this resolves a problem of Hernández, Robbie and Tkachenko); and if ℱ1 and ℱ2 are two free filters on ω that are not near coherent (such filters exist under Martin's Axiom), then A (ℱ1) and A(ℱ2) are two o-bounded and OF-undetermined subalgebras of ℱω whose product A(ℱ1) × A(ℱ2) is OF-determined and not o-bounded (this resolves a problem of Tkachenko). It is also shown that the statement that the product of two o-bounded subrings of ℱω is o-bounded is equivalent to the set-theoretic principle NCF (Near Coherence of Filters); this suggests that Tkachenko's question on the productivity of the class of o-bounded topological groups may be undecidable in ZFC.

It is shown that for the computation of the Kazhdan constant for a compact group only the regular representation restricted to the orthogonal complement of the constant functions needs to be taken into account.

Let Mn, be the algebra of all n × n matrices over a field F, where n ≧ 2. Let S be a subset of Mn containing all rank one matrices. We study mappings φ: S → Mn, such that F(φ (A)φ (B)) = F(A B) for various families of functions F including all the unitary similarity invariant functions on real or complex matrices. Very often, these mappings have the form A ↦ μ(A)S(σ (aij))S-1 for all A= (aij) ∈ S for some invertible S ∈ Mn, field monomorphism σ of F, and an F*-valued mapping μ defined on S. For real matrices, σ is often the identity map; for complex matrices, σ is often the identity map or the conjugation map: z ↦ z. A key idea in our study is reducing the problem to the special case when F:Mn → {0, 1} is defined by F(X) = 0, if X = 0, and F(X) = 1 otherwise. In such a case, one needs to characterize φ: S → Mn such that φ(A) φ (B) = 0 if and only if AB = 0. We show that such a map has the standard form described above on rank one matrices in S.

Suppose Xi, i = 1,…,n are indepedent and identically distributed with E/X1/r < ∞, r = 1,2,…. If Cov (( − μ)r, S2) = 0 for r = 1, 2,…, where μ = EX1, S2 = , and , then we show X1 ~ N (μ, σ2), where σ2 = Var(X1). This covariance zero condition charaterizes the normal distribution. It is a moment analogue, by an elementary approach, of the classical characterization of the normal distribution by independence of and S2 using semi invariants. More generally, if Cov = 0 for r = 1,…, k, then E((X1 − μ)/σ)r+2 = EZr+2 for r = 1,… k, where Z ~ N(0, 1). Conversely Corr may be arbitrarily close to unity in absolute value, but for unimodal X1, Corr2( < 15/16, and this bound is the best possible.

The existence of strictly feasible points is shown to be equivalent to the boundedness of solution sets of generalized complementarity problems with stably pseudomonotone mappings. This generalizes some known results in the literature established for complementarity problems with monotone mappings.

The partial automorphism monoid of an inverse semigroup is an inverse monoid consisting of all isomorphisms between its inverse subsemigroups. We prove that a tightly connected fundamental inverse semigroup S with no isolated nontrivial subgroups is lattice determined ‘modulo semilattices’ and if T is an inverse semigroup whose partial automorphism monoid is isomorphic to that of S, then either S and T are isomorphic or they are dually isomorphic chains relative to the natural partial order; a similar result holds if T is any semigroup and the inverse monoids consisting of all isomorphisms between subsemigroups of S and T, respectively, are isomorphic. Moreover, for these results to hold, the conditions that S be tightly connected and have no isolated nontrivial subgroups are essential.

We propose the use of finite Fourier series as an alternative means of representing ovals in projective planes of even order. As an example to illustrate the method's potential, we show that the set {wj + w3j + w−3j: 0 ≤ j ≤ 2h} ⊂ GF (22h) forms an oval if w is a primitive (2h + 1)st root of unity in GF(22h) and GF(22h) is viewed as an affine plane over GF(2h). For the verification, we only need some elementary ‘trigonometric identities’ and a basic irreducibility lemma that is of independent interest. Finally, we show that our example is the Payne oval when h is odd, and the Adelaide oval when h is even.

We consider a meromorphic function of finite lower order that has ∞ as its deficient value or as its Borel exceptional value. We prove that the set of limiting directions of its Julia set must have a definite range of measure.

A λ-graph system is a labeled Bratteli diagram with shift transformation. It is a generalization of finite labeled graphs and presents a subshift. In Doc. Math. 7 (2002) 1–30, the author constructed a C*-algebra O£ associated with a λ-graph system £ from a graph theoretic view-point. If a λ-graph system comes from a finite labeled graph, the algebra becomes a Cuntz-Krieger algebra. In this paper, we prove that there is a bijective correspondence between the lattice of all saturated hereditary subsets of £ and the lattice of all ideals of the algebra O£, under a certain condition on £ called (II). As a result, the class of the C*-algebras associated with λ-graph systems under condition (II) is closed under quotients by its ideals.

A subgroup H of a group G is said to be permutable if HX = XH for each subgroup X of G, and the group G is called quasihamiltonian if all its subgroups are permutable. We shall say that G is a Q F-group if every subgroup H of G contains a subgroup K of finite index which is permutable in G. It is proved that every locally finite Q F-group contains a quasihamiltonian subgroup of finite index. In the proof of this result we use a theorem by Buckley, Lennox, Neumann, Smith and Wiegold concerning the corresponding problem when permutable subgroups are replaced by normal subgroups: if G is a locally finite group such that H/HG is finite for every subgroup H, then G contains an abelian subgroup of finite index.

Palindromes are those reduced words of free products of groups that coincide with their reverse words. We prove that a free product of groups G has infinite palindromic width, provided that G is not the free product of two cyclic groups of order two (Theorem 2.4). This means that there is no uniform bound k such that every element of G is a product of at most k palindromes. Earlier, the similar fact was established for non-abelian free groups. The proof of Theorem 2.4 makes use of the ideas by Rhemtulla developed for the study of the widths of verbal subgroups of free products.

In this paper we give new results concerning the maximal regularity of the strict solution of an abstract second-order differential equation, with non-homogeneous boundary conditions of Dirichlet type, and set in an unbounded interval. The right-hand term of the equation is a Hölder continuous function.

We compare the geometric concept of strict convexity of open subsets of Rn with the analytic concept of 2-strict convexity, which is based on the defining functions of the set, and we do this by introducing the class of 2N-strictly convex sets. We also describe an exhaustion process of convex sets by a sequence of 2-strictly convex sets.

Let G be a finite p-group, and let M(G) be the subgroup generated by the non-central conjugacy classes of G of minimal size. We prove that this subgroup has class at most 3. A similar result is noted for nilpotent Lie algebras.

To any given balanced semigroup identity U ≈ W a number of polyhedral convex cones are associated. In this setting an algorithm is proposed which determines whether the given identity is satisfied in the bicylic semigroup or in the semigroup . The semigroups BC and E deserve our attention because a semigroup variety contains a simple semigroup which is not completely simple (respectively, which is idempotent free) if and only if this variety contains BC (respectively, E). Therefore, for a given identity U ≈ W it is decidable whether or not the variety determined by U ≈ W contains a simple semigroup which is not completely simple (respectively, which is idempotent free).

We prove that the p-adic zeta-function constructed by Kubota and Leopoldt has the Dirichlet series expansion Where the convergence of the first summation is for the p-adic topology. The proof of this formula relates the values of p(–s, ω1+σ) for s ∈ Zp, with a branch of the ‘sth-fractional derivative’, of a suitable generating function.
