Qκλ. Pκλ the space of all < κ-sized subsets of λ, has provided numerous opportunities for the gainful employment of set theorists in recent years, thanks to its combinatorial richness and to its relationships with various large cardinals. In the spirit of Pκλ we offer the following definition:

For κ ≤ λ both cardinals, Qκλ is the set of all partitions of λ into < κ-many pieces (an element of q ∈ Qκλ is called a piece of q). Equivalently

An element of Pκλ may be viewed as an injection from a < κ-sized set into λ, with some information thrown away. An element of Qκλ is a surjection from λ onto a < κ-sized set, with analogous loss of information.

For p, q ∈ Qκλ, we say p ≤ q iff q is a refinement of p (every piece of q is contained in a piece of p).

One of the basic concepts of set theoretic geology is the mantle of a model of set theory V: it is the intersection of all grounds of V, that is, of all inner models M of V such that V is a set-forcing extension of M. The main theme of the present paper is to identify situations in which the mantle turns out to be a fine structural extender model. The first main result is that this is the case when the universe is constructible from a set and there is an inner model with a Woodin cardinal. The second situation like that arises if L[E] is an extender model that is iterable in V but not internally iterable, as guided by P-constructions, L[E] has no strong cardinal, and the extender sequence E is ordinal definable in L[E] and its forcing extensions by collapsing a cutpoint to ω (in an appropriate sense). The third main result concerns the Solid Core of a model of set theory. This is the union of all sets that are constructible from a set of ordinals that cannot be added by set-forcing to an inner model. The main result here is that if there is an inner model with a Woodin cardinal, then the solid core is a fine-structural extender model.

We say that a computably enumerable (c. e.) degree a is plus-cupping, if for every c.e. degree x with 0 < x ≤ a, there is a c. e. degree y ≠ 0′ such that x ∨ y = 0′. We say that a is n-plus-cupping, if for every c. e. degree x, if 0 < x ≤ a, then there is a lown c. e. degree I such that x ∨ I = 0′. Let PC and PCn be the set of all plus-cupping, and n-plus-cupping c. e. degrees respectively. Then PC1 ⊆ PC2 ⊆ PC3 = PC. In this paper we show that PC1 ⊂ PC2, so giving a nontrivial hierarchy for the plus cupping degrees. The theorem also extends the result of Li, Wu and Zhang [14] showing that LC1 ⊂ LC2, as well as extending the Harrington plus-cupping theorem [8].

In this note I construct a proper o-minimal expansion of the ordered additive group of rationals.

In the absence of Woodin cardinals, fine structural inner models for mild large cardinal hypotheses admit forcing extensions where bounded forcing axioms hold and yet the reals are projectively well-ordered.

We settle a number of questions concerning definability in first order logic with an extra predicate symbol ranging over semi-linear sets. We give new results both on the positive and negative side: we show that in first-order logic one cannot query a semi-linear set as to whether or not it contains a line, or whether or not it contains the line segment between two given points. However, we show that some of these queries become definable if one makes small restrictions on the semi-linear sets considered.

The purpose of this paper is to show that arithmetically minimal systems of notations can be constructed which provide notations for all ramified analytical ordinals (all the ordinals in the minimum β-model for analysis). This is a much larger section of the second number class than the Church-Kleene constructive ordinals (although still only an initial segment of the ordinals). Arithmetic minimality means that if H is an “H-set” associated with an ordinal α in our system and H′ is an H-set associated with the same ordinal α in an arbitrary system of notations S, then H is arithmetical in H′. Thus the arithmetical degrees associated with ordinals in our system are as low as possible.

In order to clarify the structure of degrees of unsolvability and, more generally, to gain a deeper insight into the power set of the integers, coarser but neater classifications than the structure of Turing degrees have been sought. Several hierarchies of sets of integers have been studied, each of which organizes a certain class of sets (or their degrees of unsolvability) into a well-ordering of levels with increasing complexity of nonrecursiveness appearing at each new level. The best known of these hierarchies is the Kleene hierarchy of arithmetical sets.

In 1984, Henson and Rubel [2] proved the following theorem: If p(x1,…, xn) is an exponential polynomial with coefficients in ℂ with no zeroes in ℂ, then p(x1,…, xn) = eg(x1,…, xn) where g(x1,…, xn) is some exponential polynomial over C. In this paper, I will prove the analog of this theorem for Zilber's Pseudoexponential fields directly from the axioms. Furthermore, this proof relies only on the existential closedness axiom without any reference to Schanuel's conjecture.

Supplementing the well known results of Kunen we show that Martin's Axiom is not sufficient to decide the existence of (ω1, ϲ)-gaps when (ϲ, ϲ)-gaps exist, that is, it is consistent with ZFC that Martin's Axiom holds and there are (ϲ, ϲ)-gaps but no (ω1, ϲ)-gaps.

By a theory is meant an applied first-order predicate calculus with at least one predicate symbol and perhaps some individual constants and function symbols and a specified set of axioms. In addition to the terms defined by means of the individual variables, constants, and function symbols a theory may also include among its terms those constructed by means of operators such as the epsilon or iota operators; that is, expressions like (εχΡ) or (οχΡ), where P is a well formed formula (wff) of the theory, may also be terms. A constant term of a theory F is then a term in which no variable occurs free. We are interested only in theories which have at least one constant term so that if a theory doesn't have any individual constants it must necessarily admit as terms expressions constructed by means of operators. A sentence of a theory F is a closed wff.

We examine the computably enumerable (c.e.) degrees of prime models of complete atomic decidable (CAD) theories. A structure has degree d if d is the degree of its elementary diagram. We show that if a CAD theory T has a prime model of c.e. degree c, then T has a prime model of strictly lower c.e. degree b, where, in addition, b is low (b′ = 0′), This extends Csima's result that every CAD theory has a low prime model. We also prove a density result for c.e. degrees of prime models. In particular, if c and d are c.e. degrees with d < c and c not low2 (c″ > 0″), then for any CAD theory T, there exists a c.e. degree b with d < b < c such that T has a prime model of degree b, where b can be chosen so that b′ is any degree c.e. in c with d′ ≤ b′. As a corollary, we show that for any degree c with 0 < c < 0′, every CAD theory has a prime model of low c.e. degree incomparable with c. We show also that every CAD theory has prime models of low c.e. degree that form a minimal pair, extending another result of Csima. We then discuss how these results apply to homogeneous models.

Define to be the smallest cardinality of a function f: X→Y with I, X, Y, ⊆ 2ω such that there is no Borel function g ⊇ f. In this paper we prove that it is relatively consistent with ZFC to have b < where b is, as usual, smallest cardinality of an unbounded family in Ωω. This answers a question raised by Zapletal.

We also show that it is relatively consistent with ZFC that there exists X ⊆ 2ω such that the Borei order of X is bounded but there exists a relatively analytic subset of X which is not relatively coanalytic. This answers a question of Mauldin.
