Qκλ. Pκλ the space of all < κ-sized subsets of λ, has provided numerous opportunities for the gainful employment of set theorists in recent years, thanks to its combinatorial richness and to its relationships with various large cardinals. In the spirit of Pκλ we offer the following definition:

For κ ≤ λ both cardinals, Qκλ is the set of all partitions of λ into < κ-many pieces (an element of q ∈ Qκλ is called a piece of q). Equivalently

An element of Pκλ may be viewed as an injection from a < κ-sized set into λ, with some information thrown away. An element of Qκλ is a surjection from λ onto a < κ-sized set, with analogous loss of information.

For p, q ∈ Qκλ, we say p ≤ q iff q is a refinement of p (every piece of q is contained in a piece of p).

In the early eighties, answering a question of A. Macintyre, J. H. Schmerl ([13]) proved that every countable recursively saturated structure, equipped with a function β encoding the finite functions, is the β-closure of an infinite indiscernible sequence. This result implies that every countably saturated structure, in a countable but not necessarily recursive language, is an Ehrenfeucht-Mostowski model, by which we mean that the structure expands, in a countable language, to the Skolem hull of an infinite indiscernible sequence (in the new language).

More recently, D. Lascar ([5]) showed that the saturated model of cardinality ℵ1 of an ω-stable theory is also an Ehrenfeucht-Mostowski model.

These results naturally raise the following problem: which (countable) complete theories have an uncountably saturated Ehrenfeucht-Mostowski model. We study a generalization of this question. Namely, we call ACI-model a structure which can be expanded, in a countable language L′, to the algebraic closure (in L′) of an infinite indiscernible sequence (in L′). And we try to characterize the λ-saturated structures which are ACI-models.

The main results are the following. First it is enough to restrict ourselves to ℵ1-saturated structures: if T has an ℵ1-saturated ACI-model then, for every infinite λ, T has a λ-saturated ACI-model. We obtain a complete answer in the case of stable theories: if T is stable then the three following properties are equivalent: (a) T is ω-stable, (b) T has an ℵ1-saturated ACI-model, (c) every saturated model of T is an Ehrenfeucht-Mostowski model. The unstable case is more complicated, however we show that if T has an ℵ1-saturated ACI-model then T doesn't have the independence property.

Let {We}e∈ω be a standard enumeration of the recursively enumerable (r.e.) subsets of ω = {0,1,2,…}. The lattice of recursively enumerable sets, , is the structure ({We}e∈ω,∪,∩). ≡ is a congruence relation on if ≡ is an equivalence relation on and if for all U, U′ ∈ and V, V′ ∈ , if U ≡ U′ and V ≡ V′, then U ∪ V ≡ U′ ∪ V′ and U ∩ V ≡ U′ ∩ V′. [U] = {V ∈ | V ≡ U} is the equivalence class of U. If ≡ is a congruence relation on , the elements of the quotient lattice / ≡ are the equivalence classes of ≡. [U] ∪ [V] is defined as [U ∪ V], and [U] ∩ [V] is defined as [U ∩ V]. We say that a congruence relation ≡ on is if {(i, j)| Wi ≡ Wj} is . Define =* by putting Wi, =* Wj if and only if (Wi − Wj)∪ (Wj − Wi) is finite. Then =* is a congruence relation. If D is any set, then we can define a congruence relation by putting Wi Wj if and only if Wi ∩ D =* Wj ∩D. By Hammond [2], a congruence relation ≡ ⊇ =* is if and only if ≡ is equal to for some set D.

The Friedberg splitting theorem [1] asserts that if A is any recursively enumerable set, then there exist disjoint recursively enumerable sets A0 and A1 such that A = A0∪ A1 and such that for any recursively enumerable set B

We say that a computably enumerable (c. e.) degree a is plus-cupping, if for every c.e. degree x with 0 < x ≤ a, there is a c. e. degree y ≠ 0′ such that x ∨ y = 0′. We say that a is n-plus-cupping, if for every c. e. degree x, if 0 < x ≤ a, then there is a lown c. e. degree I such that x ∨ I = 0′. Let PC and PCn be the set of all plus-cupping, and n-plus-cupping c. e. degrees respectively. Then PC1 ⊆ PC2 ⊆ PC3 = PC. In this paper we show that PC1 ⊂ PC2, so giving a nontrivial hierarchy for the plus cupping degrees. The theorem also extends the result of Li, Wu and Zhang [14] showing that LC1 ⊂ LC2, as well as extending the Harrington plus-cupping theorem [8].

One of the main results of Gödel [4] and [5] is that, if M is a transitive set such that 〈M, Є 〉 is a model of ZF (Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory) and α is the least ordinal not in M, then 〈Lα, Є 〉 is also a model of ZF.

In this note we shall use the Jensen uniformisation theorem to show that results analogous to the above hold for certain subsystems of ZF. The subsystems we have in mind are those that are formed by restricting the formulas in the separation and replacement axioms to various levels of the Levy hierarchy.

This is all done in §1. In §2 we proceed to establish the exact order relationships which hold among the ordinals of the minimal models of some of the systems discussed in §1. Although the proofs of these latter results will not require any use of the uniformisation theorem, we will find it convenient to use some of the more elementary results and techniques from Jensen's fine-structural theory of L. We thus provide a brief review of the pertinent parts of Jensen's works in §0, where a list of general preliminaries is also furnished.

We remark that some of the techniques which we use in the present paper have been used by us previously in [6] to prove various results about β-models of analysis. Since β-models for analysis are analogous to transitive models for set theory, this is not surprising.

We examine the computably enumerable (c.e.) degrees of prime models of complete atomic decidable (CAD) theories. A structure has degree d if d is the degree of its elementary diagram. We show that if a CAD theory T has a prime model of c.e. degree c, then T has a prime model of strictly lower c.e. degree b, where, in addition, b is low (b′ = 0′), This extends Csima's result that every CAD theory has a low prime model. We also prove a density result for c.e. degrees of prime models. In particular, if c and d are c.e. degrees with d < c and c not low2 (c″ > 0″), then for any CAD theory T, there exists a c.e. degree b with d < b < c such that T has a prime model of degree b, where b can be chosen so that b′ is any degree c.e. in c with d′ ≤ b′. As a corollary, we show that for any degree c with 0 < c < 0′, every CAD theory has a prime model of low c.e. degree incomparable with c. We show also that every CAD theory has prime models of low c.e. degree that form a minimal pair, extending another result of Csima. We then discuss how these results apply to homogeneous models.

Let ${\cal M}$ be ternary, homogeneous and simple. We prove that if ${\cal M}$ is finitely constrained, then it is supersimple with finite SU-rank and dependence is k-trivial for some k < ω and for finite sets of real elements. Now suppose that, in addition, ${\cal M}$ is supersimple with SU-rank 1. If ${\cal M}$ is finitely constrained then algebraic closure in ${\cal M}$ is trivial. We also find connections between the nature of the constraints of ${\cal M}$, the nature of the amalgamations allowed by the age of ${\cal M}$, and the nature of definable equivalence relations. A key method of proof is to “extract” constraints (of ${\cal M}$) from instances of dividing and from definable equivalence relations. Finally, we give new examples, including an uncountable family, of ternary homogeneous supersimple structures of SU-rank 1.

We prove the Decomposability Conjecture for functions of Baire class $2$ from a Polish space to a separable metrizable space. This partially answers an important open problem in descriptive set theory.

Assuming AD, we show that all of the ordinals below $\delta _5^1$ represented by descriptions (c.f. [2], but also defined below) are cardinals. Using this analysis we also get a simple representation for the cardinal structure below $\delta _5^1$. As an application, we compute the cofinalitites of all cardinals below $\delta _5^1$.

We study model theoretic properties of valued fields (equipped with a real-valued multiplicative valuation), viewed as metric structures in continuous first order logic.

For technical reasons we prefer to consider not the valued field (K, |·|) directly, but rather the associated projective spaces KPn, as bounded metric structures.

We show that the class of (projective spaces over) metric valued fields is elementary, with theory MVF, and that the projective spaces Pn and are Pm biinterpretable for every n, m ≥ 1. The theory MVF admits a model completion ACMVF, the theory of algebraically closed metric valued fields (with a nontrivial valuation). This theory is strictly stable (even up to perturbation).

Similarly, we show that the theory of real closed metric valued fields, RCMVF, is the model companion of the theory of formally real metric valued fields, and that it is dependent.

Supercompact extender based forcings are used to construct models with HOD cardinal structure different from those of V. In particular, a model where all regular uncountable cardinals are measurable in HOD is constructed.

We investigate the effects of various forcings on several forms of the Halpern– Läuchli theorem. For inaccessible κ, we show they are preserved by forcings of size less than κ. Combining this with work of Zhang in [17] yields that the polarized partition relations associated with finite products of the κ-rationals are preserved by all forcings of size less than κ over models satisfying the Halpern– Läuchli theorem at κ. We also show that the Halpern–Läuchli theorem is preserved by <κ-closed forcings assuming κ is measurable, following some observed reflection properties.

In this paper, we consider Foreman’s maximality principle, which says that any nontrivial forcing notion either adds a new real or collapses some cardinals. We prove the consistency of some of its consequences. We observe that it is consistent that every c.c.c. forcing adds a real and that for every uncountable regular cardinal κ, every κ-closed forcing of size 2<κ collapses some cardinal.

We will show that almost all nonassociative relation algebras are symmetric and integral (in the sense that the fraction of both labelled and unlabelled structures that are symmetric and integral tends to $1$ ), and using a Fraïssé limit, we will establish that the classes of all atom structures of nonassociative relation algebras and relation algebras both have $0$ – $1$ laws. As a consequence, we obtain improved asymptotic formulas for the numbers of these structures and broaden some known probabilistic results on relation algebras.
