We define and study a metric independence notion in a homogeneous metric abstract elementary class with perturbations that is dp-superstable (superstable wrt. the perturbation topology), weakly simple and has complete type spaces and we give a new example of such a class based on B. Zilber’s approximations of Weyl algebras. We introduce a way to measure the dependence of a tuple a from a set B over another set A. We prove basic properties of the notion, e.g., that a is independent of B over A in the usual sense of homogeneous model theory if and only if the measure of dependence is < ε for all ε > 0. In well behaved situations, the measure corresponds to the distance to a free extension. As an example of our measure of dependence we show a connection between the measure and entropy in models from quantum mechanics in which the spectrum of the observable is discrete. As an application, we show that weak simplicity implies a very strong form of simplicity and study the question of when the dependence inside a set of all realisations of some type can be seen to arise from a pregeometry in cases when the type is not regular. In the end of the paper, we demonstrate our notions and results in one more example: a class built from the p-adic integers.

§1. Let α be an admissible ordinal which is also a limit of admissible ordinals (e.g. take any α such that α = α*, its projectum [5]). For any admissible γ ≦ α, let [γ) denote the initial segment of ordinals less than γ. A very general question that one might ask is the following: What conditions should one put on γ so that a certain statement true in Lα is ‘reflected’ to be true in Lγ? We cite some examples: (a) If β < γ < α, then Lα ⊨ “β cardinal” is ‘reflected’ to Lγ ⊨ “ β cardinal” (⊨ is just the satisfaction relation). (b) If β < γ < α and γ is a cardinal in Lα (called α-cardinal for short), then Lα ⊨ “β is not a cardinal” is ‘reflected’ to Lγ ⊨ “β is not a cardinal” This fact is used in Gödel's proof that V = L implies the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis. Our objective in this paper is to study a ‘reflection’ property of the following sort: Let A ⊆ [α) be an α-recursively enumerable (α-r.e.), non-α-recursive set. Under what conditions will A restricted to a smaller admissible ordinal γ be γ-r.e. and not γ-recursive?

The notations used here are standard. Those that are not explained are adopted from the paper of Sacks and Simpson [5], to which we also refer the reader for background material.

A problem is a multivalued function from a set of instances to a set of solutions. We consider only instances and solutions coded by sets of integers. A problem admits preservation of some computability-theoretic weakness property if every computable instance of the problem admits a solution relative to which the property holds. For example, cone avoidance is the ability, given a noncomputable set A and a computable instance of a problem ${\mathsf {P}}$ , to find a solution relative to which A is still noncomputable.

In this article, we compare relativized versions of computability-theoretic notions of preservation which have been studied in reverse mathematics, and prove that the ones which were not already separated by natural statements in the literature actually coincide. In particular, we prove that it is equivalent to admit avoidance of one cone, of $\omega $ cones, of one hyperimmunity or of one non- $\Sigma ^{0}_1$ definition. We also prove that the hierarchies of preservation of hyperimmunity and non- $\Sigma ^{0}_1$ definitions coincide. On the other hand, none of these notions coincide in a nonrelativized setting.

It is shown that the automorphism group of a relation algebra constructed from a projective geometry P is isomorphic to the collineation group of P. Also, the base automorphism group of a representation of over an affine geometry D is isomorphic to the quotient of the collineation group of D by the dilatation subgroup. Consequently, the total number of inequivalent representations of , for finite geometries P, is the sum of the numbers

where D ranges over a list of the non-isomorphic affine geometries having P as their geometry at infinity. This formula is used to compute the number of inequivalent representations of relation algebras constructed over projective lines of order at most 10. For instance, the relation algebra constructed over the projective line of order 9 has 56,700 mutually inequivalent representations.

We show that any (atomic) excellent class can be expanded with hyperimaginaries to form an (atomic) excellent class which has canonical bases. When is, in addition, of finite U-rank, then is also simple and has a full canonical bases theorem. This positive situation contrasts starkly with homogeneous model theory for example, where the eq-expansion may fail to be homogeneous. However, this paper shows that expanding an ω-stable, homogeneous class gives rise to an excellent class, which is simple if is of finite U-rank.

The following describes a calculus of sequents (SLK) patterned after the calculus LK of Gentzen in [1] but restricted to the formulas of propositional logic and modified so that the only connective is the Sheffer stroke. The ‘elimination theorem’ (Hauptsatz) is proved for SLK and a decision procedure is specified for determining whether a given formula in stroke notation is tautologous. In addition, SLK is proved consistent and complete. Subsequent remarks indicate briefly how the calculus can be modified so as to employ the dagger as the only connective.

Let ZFB be ZF + “every set is the same size as a wellfounded set”. Then the following are true.

Every sentence true in every (Rieger-Bernays) permutation model of a model of ZF is a theorem of ZFB. (i.e., ZFB is the theory of Rieger-Bernays permutation models of models of ZF) ZF and ZFAFA are both extensions of ZFB conservative for stratified formulæ. The class of models of ZFB is closed under creation of Rieger-Bernays permutation models.

We introduce a natural two-cardinal version of Bagaria’s sequence of derived topologies on ordinals. We prove that for our sequence of two-cardinal derived topologies, limit points of sets can be characterized in terms of a new iterated form of pairwise simultaneous reflection of certain kinds of stationary sets, the first few instances of which are often equivalent to notions related to strong stationarity, which has been studied previously in the context of strongly normal ideals. The non-discreteness of these two-cardinal derived topologies can be obtained from certain two-cardinal indescribability hypotheses, which follow from local instances of supercompactness. Additionally, we answer several questions posed by the first author, Holy and White on the relationship between Ramseyness and indescribability in both the cardinal context and in the two-cardinal context.
