Palaeoscolecidans represent an extinct class of vermiform organisms with a prominent annulation ranging from the Lower Cambrian to the Upper Silurian. Since the first descriptions in the 1950s, they have been attributed to different groups, but recently they have been linked to the priapulids (Conway Morris, 1997). Palaeoscolecids are mainly considered to represent members of Ecdysozoa. Their position within this clade is still under discussion, but cladistic analyses indicate that they are either close relatives of nematomorphs (Hou and Bergström, 1994) or part of an extinct sister clade to the priapulids (Wills, 1998; Dong et al., 2004). The outer cuticle of palaeoscolecidan segments possesses microelements mineralized by calcium phosphate, which are often found isolated in the conodont collections obtained from carbonates after acid treatment. Kraft and Mergl (1989), van den Boogaard (1989b), Hinz et al. (1990), and Müller and Hinz-Schallreuter (1993) clearly showed the evidence that these isolated sclerites originate from certain palaeoscolecidan taxa. The specimens documented in this paper represent such fragmented material from the Manitou Formation of west-central Colorado. Extensive taxonomic and morphologic reviews of the palaeoscolecidans were provided by Müller and Hinz-Schallreuter (1993), Conway Morris (1997), Wrona and Hamdi (2001), and Ivantsov and Wrona (2004).

The late Llandovery through late Ludlow sequences of the stable carbonate platform of Gotland (Baltic Basin; western side of the Silurian paleocontinent Baltica) and the carbonate ramp of the Welsh Borderland area in England contain a richly fossiliferous fauna of atrypid brachiopods, including more than 60 species. This was a time of diversification for the atrypids in the tropical equatorial latitudes, with new lineages appearing for the first time that were to dominate the Devonian Period. Included in this burst of new groups was the ribbed atrypid group, the Plectatrypinae (new subfamily), which quickly led to the first spinose atrypids, the Spinatrypinae. For the Plectatrypinae, a new subgenus and species, Plectatrypa (Gutnia) capidula, and a new genus, Xanthea, are described. The evolution of expanded growth lamellae and frills on the shell at this time led not only to the growth of large shells assignable to Atrypa, but also to the rise of affiliated ribbed taxa, such as the perireefal and reefal genus Endrea echoica new genus and species (Wenlock-Ludlow). The nature, affinities and taxonomy of the smooth atrypid Lissatrypa obovata (Sowerby) from the U.K. are also clarified, indicating that the type species for the unrelated genus Glassia needs to be revised.

The small ichthyosaur Mixosaurus is the most widely distributed ichthyosaur. It is known from Lower Triassic rocks of British Columbia, Canada (Callaway and Brinkman, 1989), and Middle Triassic rocks of northwestern North America (Alaska, British Columbia), China, Timor, the western Tethys (Switzerland, Italy, Turkey), the Germanic Triassic, and the high Arctic (Spitsbergen, Exmouth Island) (Mazin, 1986; Callaway and Brinkman, 1989; Callaway and Massare, 1989). The presence of Mixosaurus in one of the richest ichthyosaur provinces, the Middle Triassic of Nevada (Merriam, 1908), has been difficult to establish. The history of this problem is very colorful and is the topic of this note together with the description of a new specimen from the Nevada Middle Triassic.

The first formal report of Tertiary portunid crabs for Mexico is based on two new species, Portunus atecuicitli and Necronectes tajinensis, from the middle Miocene beds of the Tuxpan Formation in Veracruz, east-central Mexico. Associated crustacean remains include fragments of calappid fingers, calappid carapace fragments possibly assignable to Matuta Fabricius, and callianassid hands. Low tolerance to osmotic variations of recent species of Portunus confirms paleoenvironmental interpretations for shallow, euryhaline, tropical waters during deposition of the Tuxpan Formation.

The Prairie Bluff Chalk of Alabama and Mississippi yields a diverse ammonite fauna of Maastrichtian age. Twenty-eight species, of which three are new, are recorded herein: Pseudophyllites indra (Forbes, 1846), Hauericeras rembda (Forbes, 1846), Pachydiscus (Pachydiscus) maconensis n. sp., P. (P.) cf. gollevillensis (d'Orbigny, 1850), P. (P.) jacquoti (Seunes, 1890), P. (P.) egertoni (Forbes, 1846), Sphenodiscus lobatus (Tuomey, 1854), S. pleurisepta (Conrad, 1857), Coahuilites sheltoni Böse, 1928, Nostoceras (Nostoceras) alternatum (Tuomey, 1854), N. (N.) mendryki Cobban, 1974a, N. (N.) magdadiae Lefeld and Uberna, 1991, N. (N.) irregulare n. sp., Glyptoxoceras torquatum (Morton, 1834), Glyptoxoceras sp. A, Glyptoxoceras? sp., Baculites lomaensis Anderson, 1958, Baculites spp. A–C, Eubaculites labyrinthicus (Morton, 1834), E. carinatus (Morton, 1834), Baculites? trabeatus (Morton, 1834), Trachybaculites columna (Morton, 1834), Discoscaphites conradi (Morton, 1834), D. gulosus (Morton, 1834), Jeletzkytes criptonodosus Riccardi, 1983, Trachyscaphites alabamensis n. sp., and T. yorkensis (Stephenson, 1941). One genus, Trachybaculites, is new. The bulk of the fauna can be referred to a Discoscaphites conradi assemblage zone, but some elements in the fauna are significantly older.

The fossils originally assigned to the family Hydrophilidae (Coleoptera, Polyphaga) from the late Miocene locality of Öhningen (southern Germany) are revised. Nine hydrophilid species are recognized, most of them representing the tribe Hydrophilini. Five species are reliably assigned to genera: Hydrochara noachica (Heer, 1847), n. comb. (=Hydrophilus rehmanni Heer, 1847, n. syn.), Hydrobiomorpha braunii (Heer, 1847), n. comb. (=Hydrous escheri Heer, 1862, n. syn.), Hydrobiomorpha heeri n. sp., Hydrophilus spectabilis Heer, 1847 (=Hydrophilus knorrii Heer, 1847, n. syn., =Hydrophilus giganteus Heer, 1862, n. syn.), and Hydrophilus vexatorius Heer, 1847. Two taxa are treated as Hydrophilini incertae sedis: Hydrophilopsis elongata Heer, 1862, and Hydrous ovalis Heer, 1862. Two species represent Hydrophilidae incertae sedis: Escheria ovalis Heer, 1847 and E. bella Heer, 1862. The fossil genus Hydrophilopsis Heer, 1862 likely represents the modern genera Sternolophus Solier, 1834 or Hydrobiomorpha Blackburn, 1888, the fossil genus Escheria Heer, 1847 likely represents some modern genus within the Hydrophilini or Hydrobiusini. Six taxa are excluded from the Hydrophiloidea: Helophorus magnus Heer, 1862, H. exilis Heer, 1862 (possibly belonging to Curculionidae), Hydrobius couloni Heer, 1862 and H. godeti Heer, 1862 (both possibly belonging to Curculionidae: Zygopinae), Hydrophilus braunii var. minor Heer, 1862, and Hydrophilus stenopterus Heer, 1862 (likely a leaf fossil). Our revision revealed a rather high amount of inaccurate family and genus assignments and a moderate amount of species-level synonymy in the original treatment of Öhnigen fauna by O. Heer. The diversity of the hydrophilid beetles in Öhningen is thus lower than previously reported, but still being slightly higher compared to other European Paleogene and Neogene localities.

Scolecodonts, the jaws of polychaetes, are the fossil evidence of the rich and diverse fauna that prospered in shelf seas. Among eunicid polychaetes, the largest jaws in the jaw apparatus occur in pairs. Normally these pairs are not exact mirror images of each other. Rarely, left and right jaws are found to be reversed, the jaw in the left position having the morphology of a mirror image of the normal right jaw and vice-versa. This type of morphological reversal (reversed handedness) is recorded with a frequency that varies from one reversed jaw in 430 to one in 5,838 of normal jaws. Reversed jaws so far are documented in four species from the Upper Ordovician of Indiana, USA, and one species from the Silurian of Gotland, Sweden. The reversed morphology is thought to be a natural, genetically induced feature. The polychaetes with morphological reversal grew to normal size, but never became common.

Sinemurian and Pliensbachian Exogyrinae from northern Chile described herein as Nanogyra? cf. auricularis are considered the oldest members of the subfamily known to date. Comparisons with a large number of Jurassic Nanogyrini and aberrant Gryphaea species suggest that they are most closely related to Nanogyra? auricularis (Münster in Goldfuss) from the Toarcian of France, but probably not identical. Morphotypes of several Chilean specimens are transitional between gryphaeate and exogyrate forms, and their assignment to either Gryphaeinae or Exogyrinae appears arbitrary. In order to solve this taxonomic problem, the microstructures of Nanogyra? cf. auricularis and co-occurring typical Gryphaea species were examined and compared to a large database from previous studies. The results suggest that shell chambering is a feature common to all Exogyrinae but not to Gryphaea sensu stricto. Complex cross foliation and branching cross foliation are characteristic of both groups. However, they are more abundant in Gryphaea and apparently become phylogenetically reduced in the Exogyrinae. The transitory morphotypes and microstructures, especially of the Sinemurian specimens, are further evidence for the evolution of the Exogyrinae from the Gryphaeinae. Obviously, the Chilean specimens are very close in time and space to the origin of the subfamily. Thus, the lowermost Jurassic Andean back-arc basin of western South America is considered a plausible place of origin of the Exogyrinae.

Lower Carboniferous (Viséan-?early Namurian) conodonts, and some of their variably complete reconstructed apparatuses, are described from cyclic marine carbonates, associated with evaporites and mud rocks, of the Windsor Group, Magdalen Islands, Quebec, Canada. The conodont fauna includes Clydagnathus windsorensis, Cavusgnathus unicornis, Taphrognathus transatlanticus, Hindeodus cristula, Hindeodus? scitulus, Vogelgnathus campbelli, Ozarkodina laevipostica, Mestognathus bipluti, Mestognathus spp., Spathognathodus? n. sp. A, and Apatognathus spp.

Twenty-seven graptolite species are reported from the lowermost Silurian (Rhuddanian) ascensus-acuminatus and vesiculosus biozones of Montagne Noire in southwestern France. Four species are left in open nomenclature, four are new: Normalograptus crassus, Neodiplograptus lautus, Dimorphograptus compactus and Huttagraptus solidus. The joint occurrence of Akidograptus ascensus, Parakidograptus acuminatus and Cystograptus ancestralis, recorded in the Gabian-1 section, suggests correlation of the whole succession at this site with the middle part of a combined ascensus-acuminatus Biozone. Revision of museum collections revealed that other elements that are characteristic of the ascensus-acuminatus Biozone assemblage in peri-Gondwanan Europe, such as Normalograptus trifilis, N. longifilis and Neodiplograptus lanceolatus, have been recovered from several other localities in Montagne Noire that are no longer accessible. The graptolite assemblage of the Gabian-2 section, with common Cystograptus vesiculosus, Dimorphograptus extenuatus, D. elongatus and Atavograptus atavus, belongs to the lower part of the vesiculosus Biozone, whilst the appearance of D. swanstoni and D.? physophora in the upper part of the section represents a higher, although not the uppermost, part of the biozone. This is the first record of a diverse dimorphograptid fauna within the vesiculosus Biozone in the Gondwanan part of Europe.

The fossilized gladii of six squid from the Pembina Member of the Pierre Shale (Upper Cretaceous, Campanian) of southern Manitoba are referred to Tusoteuthis longa Logan, 1898, a species previously reported only from the Niobrara Formation of Kansas. The characters used to identify the genus are reviewed and it is referred to the family Kelaenidae. Documentation of these specimens extends the range of both the genus and the family to the Campanian of Canada.

Two arthropod specimens assigned to Anabarochilina australis (Hinz-Schallreuter, 1993) from the late middle Cambrian (Guzhangian Stage, Lejopyge acantha Biozone) Karsha Formation, Zanskar Valley, northern India comprise the first record of the Bradoriida from the Himalaya. These Indian specimens cannot be distinguished statistically from other A. australis material based on valve length and height ratios, and differ only slightly in other characters. These observations justify the synonymy of a number of similar forms worldwide that previously have been only questionably attributed to A. australis. The occurrence of the species in Australia, India, Laurentia, and Kazakhstan encompassed an equatorial distribution from approximately 20° north to 20° south during late middle Cambrian time and indicates that A. australis had the ability to disperse across deep ocean basins. Such a distribution is consistent with a planktonic lifestyle. In contrast, other congeneric species of Anabarochilina apparently had more localized occurrence or, in the case of A. primordialis, were distributed across several paleocontinents and climatic zones.

A new crocodylian, Dongnanosuchus hsui n. gen. n. sp., is described mainly based on four well-preserved skulls from the Eocene Youganwo Formation of the Maoming Basin, southeastern China. It is an alligatoroid and phylogenetically nested within the Orientalosuchina. Dongnanosuchus hsui n. gen. n. sp. differs from all other orientalosuchines primarily in certain features of the skull: (1) a preorbital ridge connects posteriorly with the dorsal orbital rim and a ridge around the anteroventral margin of the orbit, (2) the palatine is short and does not reach the posterior border of the suborbital fenestra, (3) the external mandibular fenestra is closed, and (4) the splenial joins the formation of the mandibular symphysis. The discovery of Dongnanosuchus hsui n. gen. n. sp. confirms the monophyly and North American origin of the Orientalosuchina but suggests that the clade dispersed to Asia via Beringia after diverging from the mainline rather than a sub-lineage of the Alligatoroidea in the Late Cretaceous.

An exceptional fauna of retiolitine graptolites from Aeronian and lowermost Telychian strata in Arctic Canada provides significant new insights into the phylogeny and history of diversity of retiolitine graptolites. All specimens were isolated by dissolution of calcite concretions. The results indicate that retiolitines emerged within the lower Aeronian and reached a higher than expected level of diversity and disparity of forms by mid-Aeronian time. The uppermost Aeronian is almost totally devoid of preserved graptolites in Arctic Canada and, therefore, our material provides few new insights into retiolitine morphology or diversity through that interval. Specimens assigned to Pseudoretiolites? sp. occur in well-dated lower Aeronian strata, thus representing the lowest known biostratigraphic occurrences of retiolitines globally. This taxon appears to be morphologically primitive in that the sicula is completely preserved, with preservation of the proximal regions of theca 11, as well as distal thecal fusellum on mature specimens. Cladistic analysis of the Llandovery retiolitines shows that Pseudoretiolites is a stem genus for all of the other retiolitine taxa, which comprise two clades: one consisting of Pseudoplegmatograptus, Retiolites, and Stomatograptus and their derivatives; and the other includes Rotaretiolites, Aeroretiolites, Aeroretiolites?, Eorograptus, Paraplectograptus, Paraplectograptus?, and Sokolovograptus, and all of those other taxa that had previously been placed in the Plectograptinae. We follow the recent proposal that all of the taxa traditionally assigned to the Retiolitidae be assigned to the subfamily Retiolitinae. The following new taxa are described: Pseudoretiolites hyrichus n. sp., Eorograptus spirifer n. sp., and Aeroretiolites cancellatus n. gen. n. sp.

Crinoids are reported from the New Zealand Paleocene for the first time and include rare articulated columnals and brachia with pinnules. These specimens of Metacrinus sp. (Isocrinidae) are present in basal, fossiliferous, coarse-grained, quartzose sediments of the Kauru Formation, a few centimeters above schist basement, in the Kakanui Valley, North Otago. The crinoid-bearing facies probably represents earliest onlap or a storm surge onto a wave cut platform; sedimentological and paleontological evidence indicates a moderate- to high-energy environment. The crinoids were most probably buried rapidly while alive or shortly after death. The presence of isocrinids in the Kauru Formation and younger Paleogene strata reveals that the supposed shift of some isocrinids from a shallower to a deeper environment actually occurred much later in the Paleogene, and not the Late Cretaceous as previously supposed. Associated molluscs indicate a mid to upper “Wangaloan” Stage (local), equivalent to mid Paleocene. A summary of the New Zealand crinoid fossil record is presented.

The Campanian-Maastrichtian-aged Grande Carriere quarry near Tercis, southwest France, contains a diverse and abundant assemblage of both micro-and macrofossils from a thick sequence of well-exposed limestones. Its fauna is also a mixture of both Boreal and Tethyan Province species. Because of these two traits, the quarry provides an excellent source of information about integrated biostratigraphic events among diverse taxa, as well as providing a reference section for correlation between the two biogeographic provinces. The quarry has recently been proposed as a candidate for the Campanian/Maastrichtian boundary stratotype section, while one ammonite found there, Pachydiscus neubergicus, has been proposed as the index fossil marking the base of the Maastrichtian Stage. We have made collections of Upper Cretaceous ammonites and planktonic foraminifera from limestones exposed in, and near this site, which yield new information about the relative stratigraphic ranges of Upper Campanian and Lower Maastrichtian ammonites and foraminifera.

The discovery of a specimen of Nautilus praepompilius Shimansky, 1957, from the Chegan Formation of Kazakhstan confirms that this species is assignable to Nautilus, and that this extant genus extends back to the late Eocene. It is morphologically closest to Nautilus pompilius Linnaeus. The nepionic constriction shows that the hatching size was ca. 23 mm dia, close to that for Nautilus pompilius (ca. 26 mm dia).

A new genus and species of crab is described from the late Maastrichtian Meerssen Member of the Maastricht Formation at the type area of the Maastrichtian Stage, SE Netherlands. This new taxon could well be the ancestor of the xanthid Prochlorodius-Chlorodiella group and its occurrence provides additional evidence of a late Cretaceous radiation among the decapod crustaceans.

A new species of the staphylinid subfamily Oxytelinae is described and figured from a series of well-preserved compression fossils of the Yixian Formation (Early Cretaceous), Beipiao City, Liaoning Province, northeastern China. The species is placed in the recent genus Anotylus Thomson, 1859 based on typical morphological features for the genus as well as secondary sexual characters. The strong projection of the anterior pronotal angles is a feature also possessed by males of several recent Neotropical taxa in the genus. This is the earliest fossil rove beetle with clearly demonstrable sexual dimorphism.
