While the maximum bending moment, and hence maximum bending stress, of a fully clamped elliptical plate under uniform load is independent from the Poisson's ratio of the plate material, the same cannot be said so when the plate is simply supported. This paper develops a simple but sufficiently accurate model for evaluating the bending stresses along the principal axes of a simply supported elliptical under uniform load. Plotted results suggest that bending stresses at plate center along the longer principal axis is minimized by the use of highly auxetic materials if the elliptical plate is almost circular but the use of mildly auxetic material is preferred if the aspect ratio of the elliptical plate is very high. Results also reveal that bending stresses at plate center along the shorter principal axis is minimized when the plate material is highly auxetic. Upon considering the von Mises stress state as the effective stress, it was found that the maximum effective stress is reduced with the use of auxetic and conventional materials for simply supported elliptical plates of low and high aspect ratios, respectively.

The steady-state response to periodic excitation in the linear fractional vibration system was considered by using the fractional derivative operator . First we investigated the response to the harmonic excitation in the form of complex exponential function. The amplitude-frequency relation and phase-frequency relation were derived. The effect of the fractional derivative term on the stiffness and damping was discussed. For the case of periodic excitation, we decompose the periodic excitation into a superposition of harmonic excitations by using the Fourier series, and then utilize the results for harmonic excitations and the principle of superposition, where our adopted tactics avoid appearing a fractional power of negative numbers to overcome the difficulty in fractional case. Finally we demonstrate the proposed method by three numerical examples.

On the basis of the linear magnetoelectroelasticity, the interaction problem between a generalized screw dislocation and a fibrous three-phase magnetoelectroelastic composite penetrated by a semi-infinite wedge crack is investigated in this paper. The fibrous magnetoelectroelastic composite is composed of three dissimilar materials bonded along two concentric circular interfaces. The magnetoelectroelastic materials are assumed to be transversely isotropic and have the same poling direction. The analytical derivations are based on the complex variable, conformal mapping, analytical continuation and image singularity methods. Numerical calculations are given graphically for studying the effects of material combinations, geometric models, wedge angles and the load type on the generalized stress fields, the generalized stress intensity factors, and the forces on the dislocation.

The present paper investigates the propagation of Love-type waves in an initially stressed heterogeneous fibre-reinforced layer with corrugated boundary surfaces, lying over a viscoelastic half-space under hydrostatic state of stress. The dispersion relation is obtained in closed form and found to be in well-agreement with the classical Love wave equation. The substantial effect of reinforcement, position and undulation parameters (i.e. corrugation), heterogeneity, horizontal initial stress and hydrostatic state of stress are discussed briefly. It is established through comparative study that reinforced layer supports more to phase velocity of Love-type wave as compare to reinforced free layer.

Based on the coordinate transformation method, the formula of the dynamic inhomogeneous isoparametric finite element method is presented for generating element stiffness, damping and mass matrices. First, the global coordinate form and simplified form of dynamic inhomogeneous finite element are given in this paper. Then, the discrete material parameter distributions under the isoparametric coordinate system are obtained by using the transformation relationship between the global coordinates and the isoparametric coordinates. The simplified form with the discrete material parameter distributions is obtained for generating the element stiffness and mass matrices of the dynamic inhomogeneous isoparametric element. The numerical examples show that the scheme proposed in present paper has high precision.

Molecular spring vibration isolation technology has been invented in the recent years but it still needs further development in dynamics theory. A molecular spring isolation (MSI) consists of water and hydrophobic zeolites as working medium, providing high-static-low-dynamic stiffness. The dynamic properties of MSI are thoroughly investigated in this paper. Firstly, the nonlinear dynamic model of a vibration system support by MSI, i.e. the equation of motion, is established. Then the averaging method is employed to estimate the frequency response function (FRF) of the primary resonance. The phase trajectories diagram evolvement of primary resonance is also investigated to analysis the stability of the primary resonance response. From the plot of FRF, it is found that there exists a jump phenomenon induced by nonlinear stiffness, which may have harmful impacts on the equipment which is supposed to be protected from vibrations and shocks. To avoid jump, the FRF is analyzed to find the critical values of system parameters and a jump avoidance criterion is introduced.

In this paper, a thermoelastic analysis of rotating disks with different thickness profiles made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) subjected to internal pressure is presented. Material properties (except Poisson’s ratio) and disk thickness profile are described by means of two functions namely power and exponential function. A comparative study of thermoelastic analysis is given for material properties and disk thickness profiles. The results of are compared with those obtained by finite element method (FEM) that shows good agreement. The effect of thickness profiles, gradient parameters and angular velocity on the thermoelastic performance of the disk have been studied.

Recently, compact and high-resolution camera modules with auto-focusing (AF) function have been integrated into cell phones in order to capture sharp photographs. Consumer demands AF camera modules in cell phones to have high performance with low cost. Accordingly, the present study proposes a new electromagnetic design of miniature AF voice coil motor (VCM) actuator with closed-loop control for cell phone camera modules to satisfy the requirements. The structure of the proposed AF VCM actuators was designed by using simulation methods. The performance of the proposed AF VCM actuators was demonstrated by a laboratory-built prototype. The experimental results have shown that the proposed AF VCM actuator has excellent performance with lower power consumption, higher positioning repeatability, and lower cost, when compared to previous AF VCM actuators with open-loop control or closed-loop control.

This paper presents a 2D dynamics infinite element method (DIEM) for modeling the multiple-hole membrane for vibration analysis. A new concept involving converting the DIEM into a super element that can adjust the hole size and free and fixed boundary conditions around the hole is also proposed. The special element, embedded with an elastic membrane, is formulated on the basis of the conventional finite element method (FEM) by using the similarity mass/stiffness property of isoparametric elements and Craig-Bampton matrix reduction procedures. A DIEM-FE coupling scheme is also developed and self-programmed into the software MATLAB to conduct the vibration analysis of a membrane with multiple holes. The DIEM-FE approach is validated to study the vibration of the rectangular membranes by using the corresponding analytical solutions and the solutions obtained using the conventional FEM. The DIEM-FE is then applied to analyze imbedded L-shaped and circular opening problems. The effects of varying hole diameters and the free or fixed boundary condition along the hole are also examined. Finally, the last example shows that to perform vibration analysis of the multiple-hole membrane, only one DIEM mass/stiffness matrix must be calculated for all holes with an identical circular shape. Overall, this study provides a flexibility and efficient scheme for analyzing a wide variety of membrane vibration problems. The number of degrees of freedom and the corresponding PC memory storage are substantially reduced through the computation.

Depositing arch jamming of elliptical disks at the opening of a two-dimensional static hopper is studied experimentally. The hopper slope and opening width, and the aspect ratio of elliptical disks, are varied to determine their influence on the jamming probability. The jamming probability increases as the aspect ratio increases for gentle hopper slopes, while fluctuations of jamming probability appear for more steeper hopper slopes. Increasing hopper slope decreases the jamming probability in most cases. Most jamming arches result from the strong force chains along the shorter axes of elliptical disks. The disk number consisting of jamming arches decreases as the hopper slope increases. For smaller hopper openings, it decreases as the aspect ratio increases, whilst a nearly reverse tendency appears for elliptical disks with smaller aspect ratios. The study delivers a physical mechanism of jamming phenomena in depositing elliptical disks in a two- dimensional static hopper.

Through-Silicon-Via (TSV) is considered to be the most potential solution for 3D electronic packaging, and the mechanical properties of TSV-Cu are critical for TSV reliability improving. In this paper, to make deeply understand the creep behavior of TSV-Cu, nanoindentation creep tests were conducted to obtain its creep parameters. At first, the TSV specimens were fabricated by means of a typical TSV manufacturing process. Then a combination programmable procedure of the constant indentation strain rate method and the constant load method was employed to study the creep behavior of TSV-Cu. To understand the influence of the previous loading schemes, including the different values of the indentation strain and the maximum depths, the nanoindentation creep tests under different loading conditions were conducted. The values of creep strain rate sensitivity m were derived from the corresponding displacement-holding time curves, and the mean value of m finally determined was 0.0149. The value of m is considered no obvious correlation with the different indentation strain rates and the maximum depths by this method. Furthermore, the mechanism for the room temperature creep was also discussed, and the grain boundaries might play an significant role in this creep behavior.

To study the seismic performance and the effects of different joint shapes for unbonded precast segmental bridge columns under low-reversed cyclic loading, two 3-D finite element (FE) models respectively using plane-contact joints and shear resistant joints were established. In the FE models, the mechanical behaviors of concrete and tendons were respectively described by the damage-plastic model and the bilinear model, and the contact criteria was based on Coulomb's Friction. The results of nonlinear time history analysis showed that the deformation of the columns was mainly composed of alternately open-closed joints, and the failure of the column was mainly caused by concrete crush on the bottom segment. Compared with two model's hysteresis loop, backbone curve, ductility and residual deformation, it was found that the column with shear resistant joints had longer stable period of strength, better ductility, and smaller residual displacement than the column with plane-contact joints, so it had better seismic performance.

The analysis method is developed to obtain dynamic characteristics of the rotating cantilever plate with thermal shock and tip-rub. Based on the variational principle, equations of motion are derived considering the differences between rubbing forces in the width direction of the plate. The transverse deformation is decomposed into quasi-static deformation of the cantilever plate with thermal shock and dynamic deformation of the rubbing plate under thermal shock. Then deformations are obtained through the calculation of modal characteristics of rotating cantilever plate and temperature distribution function. Special attention is paid to the influence of tip-rub and thermal shock on the plate. The results show that tip-rub has the characteristics of multiple frequency vibrations, and high frequency vibrations are significant. On the contrary, thermal shock shows the low frequency vibrations. The thermal shock makes the rubbing plate gradually change into low frequency vibrations. Because rub-induced vibrations are more complicated than those caused by thermal shock, tip-rub is easier to result in the destruction of the blade. The increasing friction coefficient intensifies vibrations of the rubbing plate. Minimizing friction coefficients can be an effective way to reduce rub-induced damage through reducing the surface roughness between the blade tip and the inner surface of the casing.

In this article, a numerical study is carried out for the steady two-dimensional flow of an incompressible Maxwell fluid in the region of oblique stagnation point over a stretching sheet. The governing equations are transformed to dimensionless boundary layer equations. After some manipulation a system of ordinary differential equations is obtained, which is solved by using parallel shooting method. A comparison with the previous studies is made to show the accuracy of our results. The effects of involving parameters are discussed in detail and the streamlines are drawn to predict the flow pattern of the fluid. It is observed that increasing velocities ratio parameter (ratio of straining to stretching velocity) helps to decrease the boundary layer thickness. Furthermore, the velocity of fluid increases by increasing the obliqueness parameter.

Through silicon via (TSV) is the critical structure for three dimensional (3D) integration, which provides vertical interconnection between stacking dies. In TSV structure, large coefficient differences of thermal expansion exist between silicon substrate, dielectric material, and filled metal. Due to the large thermal mismatch, the high thermal stress occurring at the interface of different materials would result in delamination. Therefore, thermal-mechanical reliability is a key issue for 3D integration. In this study, we investigated the thermal-mechanical stress distribution of TSV under the condition of the accelerated thermal cycling loading by finite element analysis based on a 3D model of TSV structure. Due to the thermal expansion, that the TSV structure squeezed the surface area between TSVs at a high temperature resulted in compressive stresses at the surface area between TSVs. Therefore, a proper distance between the stress-sensitive device and the TSV should be kept. The stress analysis shows that the maximum thermal stress occurs in the outside region of TSV interface and in the annular region of TSV at a high temperature and at a low temperature, respectively. This study helps to obtain a clear thermal stress distribution of TSV and possible failure regions can be determined.

In this paper, a non-classical plate model capturing the size effect is developed to study the forced vibration of functionally graded (FG) microplates subjected to a harmonic excitation transverse force. To this, the modified couple stress theory (MCST) is incorporated into the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDPT) to account for the size effect through one length scale parameter, only. Strong form of nonlinear governing equations and associated boundary conditions are obtained using Hamilton's principle. The solution process is implemented on two domains. The generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method is first employed to discretize the governing equations on the space domain. A Galerkin-based scheme is then applied to extract a reduced set of the nonlinear equations of Duffing-type. On the second domain, through a time differentiation matrix operator, the set of ordinary differential equations are transformed into the discrete form on time domain. Eventually, a system of the parameterized nonlinear equations is acquired and solved via the pseudo-arc length continuation method. The frequency response curve of the microplate is sketched and the effects of various material and geometrical parameters on it are evaluated.

This work is to present a formulation of cloaking or concentrating device in acoustics in which the transformed material could be either having uniform bulk modulus or having homogeneous density tensor. The transformed material parameters, depending on the mapping of physical and virtual coordinates, are often position-varying and anisotropic. This often adds substantial complexity in practical implementation. Here we present a theoretical algorithm that allows us to design a transformation field that could have either uniform bulk modulus or constant density tensor. For cloaking devices with constant bulk modulus, analytical and numerical results are presented for circular as well as for non-circular cloaking devices. Specifically, elliptical and twin-cloak devices are exemplified. To achieve the effect of constant density tensor, we consider only circular geometry. Devices with cloaking or concentrating effects can be exactly formulated. We note, however, that it seems unlikely at this moment to have a transformation device that has constant bulk modulus and constant density tensor at the same time. Nevertheless, we remark the present results are of still sufficient merit in that the uniform material parameters, in either set of material parameters, indeed greatly simplify the practice in real implementations.

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are widely used in commercial products as filters and resonators. SAW devices are also applied as passive, wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and sensors, which can be used in harsh environments and consume no batteries. In this study, we designed and fabricated an SAW-based RFID tag with the added function of a high-resolution temperature sensor. A coupling of modes model was adopted to design 433MHz SAW-based tags/sensors. An improved signal processing method was used to increase the resolution of time-domain signals, enabling the slight change of delay time caused by temperature variation to be detected. Subsequently, the SAW tags/sensors were fabricated on 128° Y-cut lithium niobate and used to detect temperature shifts. The results revealed that high-resolution delay-time SAW devices are feasible for measuring temperatures precisely and can be applied to other SAW-based sensors.

This paper is to present the treatment of internal thermoelastic stress analysis in 3D anisotropic bodies by the boundary element method (BEM). Fundamentally, thermal effects will give rise to an additional volume integral in the boundary integral equation (BIE). By applying the fundamental solutions represented by Fourier series, the volume integral has been analytically transformed to the boundary. For the present work, spatial differentiations of the integral equation are performed to give displacement gradients at internal points of interest. This differentiated integral equation is further implemented to perform thermoelastic stress analysis inside 3D anisotropic bodies. This analysis is particularly important in engineering applications when thermoelastic stresses concentrations are present inside the bodies. The present work is the first BEM implementation for this study by the transformed BIE. In the end, two benchmark examples are tested to demonstrate the applicability of the present BEM treatment.

The issue on the muzzle blast flow with gas-particle mixtures was numerically investigated in this paper. The propellant gas in the cannon was assumed to be gas-particle mixtures consisting of a variety of gaseous species and particles. The model made use of the Eulerian-Eulerican approach, where the particle were modeled as a second fluid with parameters like bulk density, velocity and temperature, interacting with the gas flow. A high-resolution upwind scheme(AUSMPW+) and detailed reaction kinetics model were employed to solve the chemical non-equilibrium Euler equations for gas phase. The Euler equations for particle phase were solved by MacCormack scheme. The particle diameter and the mass fraction of particle were tested to show their effects on the development process of muzzle blast flow with gas-particle mixtures. The distribution of the main flow parameters of both gas and particle were obtained at different time intervals. The results show the evolution of the muzzle blast flow with gas-particle mixtures and demonstrate the effects of key parameter on the flow field of the gas-particle flow. This paper is a significant investigation for understanding the muzzle blast flow with gas-particle mixtures, which can provide valuable reference for the research on the muzzle blast flow.
