The Journal of Latin American Studies is published four times a year, in February, May, August and November. The editorial board comprises area studies specialists based in the United Kingdom from all the principal social science disciplines, including history.
The Journal aims to publish recent research in the field of Latin American studies in economics, geography, politics, international relations, sociology, social anthropology, and history. Articles on literature and the arts are not normally included, but the editors are pleased to consider contributions in the field of intellectual and cultural history. Articles with an inter-disciplinary approach are particularly welcome.

Journal of Latin American Studies publishes the following article types:

The Journal of Latin American Studies welcomes proposals for special issues that:
- fit with the journal’s aims and scope,
- significantly contribute to debates and research in Latin American Studies
- present coherence, complementarity and diversity across contributions.
Proposals are evaluated based on these criteria by the editorial board, who may request revisions before granting approval. All special issues require prior approval, and even after acceptance, individual contributions must undergo peer review. Guest editors are encouraged to include a selection of illustrative pre-selected papers to showcase the issue’s feasibility and initiate an open call for submissions, subsequent to the proposal being accepted, to promote the journal’s dedication to diversity and inclusivity.
