When it is a full-grown pig. Specifically we have to do with the word δελφάκιον, defined by LSJ as a ‘sucking pig’. Now, it is true that the word itself is a diminutive of δέλφαξ, and that a δέλφαξ is a fullgrown pig; but not every diminutive indicates something small or immature. A diminutive may be disparaging (‘kinglet’), friendly (‘Joey’), pleonastic (‘Katyushka’), ironic (Robin Hood's Little John), or simply a regular part of a word (‘Mädchen’) or a name (Theodor Herzl). A diminutive may refer to a difference of importance (‘baronet’) or sex (‘majorette’) rather than size, and may even refer to something larger that of the simple form: it is by a quirk of historical linguistics that a hamlet is larger than a home, but it is a fact of the synchronic language. The -ιον ending in and of itself cannot establish that a δελφάκιον is immature.

The author of the Athenaion Politeia, whether Aristotle or a pupil of his, said that in 462/1 Ephialtes took from the Areopagite Council ‘the additional functions (epitheta), through which it had guardianship of the constitution’, and gave some of these to the council of five hundred but others to the assembly and the courts (25.2). The author did not specify the functions given to the recipient bodies; the reason may well be that he did not know what they were. But many readers have supposed that in calling those functions ‘additional’ the author followed the view taken by the reformers of 462/1. This explanation suggests that the author drew, directly or indirectly, on sources contemporary with the reform.

We know of several Greek translators of works originally written in Latin. Of non-Christian, purely literary material, we know of six. First, there is Claudius' powerful freedman, Polybius, who turned Homer into Latin prose and Vergil into Greek prose (Seneca Consol. ad Polyb. 8.2, 11.5). Then, under Hadrian we have Zenobius ‘the sophist’, who translates Sallust's Histories and “so-called Wars’ (Suda Z 73). The translation into Greek of Hyginus' Fabulae can be dated precisely, for its unknown author tells us that he copied it up on 11th September 207 (CGIL iii 56.3off.). Similarly, the extant translation of Eutropius' Breviarium by Paianios, probably a pupil of Libanius, can be dated securely to about 380. The translation of the same by Capito (Suda K 342), which survives in excerpts, is placed with some confidence at the beginning of the sixth century. The date and identity of the last of our translators, ‘Arrian the epic poet’, who rendered the Georgics of Vergil (Suda A 3867), is unclear.
