Changes in ice mass are estimated from elevation changes derived from 10.5 years (Greenland) and 9 years (Antarctica) of satellite radar altimetry data from the European Remote-sensing Satellites ERS-1 and -2. For the first time, the dH/dt values are adjusted for changes in surface elevation resulting from temperature-driven variations in the rate of firn compaction. The Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins (–42 ± 2Gta¯1 below the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA)) and growing inland (+53 ± 2Gta-1 above the ELA) with a small overall mass gain (+11 ± 3Gta–1; –0.03 mma–1 SLE (sea-level equivalent)). The ice sheet in West Antarctica (WA) is losing mass (–47 ± 4Gta–1) and the ice sheet in East Antarctica (EA) shows a small mass gain (+16 ± 11 Gta–1) for a combined net change of –31 ± 12 Gta–1 (+0.08mma–1 SLE). The contribution of the three ice sheets to sea level is +0.05±0.03mma–1. The Antarctic ice shelves show corresponding mass changes of –95 ± 11 Gta–1 in WA and +142 ± 10Gta–1 in EA. Thinning at the margins of the Greenland ice sheet and growth at higher elevations is an expected response to increasing temperatures and precipitation in a warming climate. The marked thinnings in the Pine Island and Thwaites Glacier basins of WA and the Totten Glacier basin in EA are probably ice- dynamic responses to long-term climate change and perhaps past removal of their adjacent ice shelves. The ice growth in the southern Antarctic Peninsula and parts of EA may be due to increasing precipitation during the last century.

Small anomalies in ice-shelf surface temperature correlate with measured microtopography. Clear-sky thermal infrared (TIR) images of the Brunt Ice Shelf, Antarctica, frequently show persistent patterns of anomalous snow surface temperatures. The anomalous signatures appear as stripes orientated along the ice flowline and are of the order of 5 K in magnitude. The positional persistence of the stripes suggests a topographic mechanism for their formation. In order to test this hypothesis, the TIR stripes are compared to a digital terrain model (DTM) derived from a kinematic global positioning system survey of the ice shelf. Ridges and valleys are seen in the DTM; the ridges correspond to the warmer TIR stripes, the valleys to the colder areas. In order to investigate the mechanism that couples elevation with thermal signature, two comparable but contrasting sets of clear-sky infrared images are presented, along with surface meteorological data. The first shows strong TIR stripes, whilst the second, despite similar snow- and air-temperature profiles, shows a weaker signature and smaller sensible-heat flux, H. Two possible mechanisms are presented which explain the TIR signature: surface elevation mapping onto the vertical air-temperature profile or, alternatively, enhanced surface sensible-heat flux on elevated areas. At present, there is insufficient information to resolve this uncertainty.

Alpine glaciers are very sensitive to climate fluctuations, and their mass balance can be used as an indicator of regional-scale climate change. Here, we present a method to calculate glacier mass balance using remote-sensing data. Snowline measurements from remotely sensed images recorded at the end of the hydrological year provide an effective proxy of the equilibrium line. Mass balance can be deduced from the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) variations. Three well-documented glaciers in the French Alps, where the mass balance is measured at ground level with a stake network, were selected to assess the accuracy of the method over the 1994–2002 period (eight mass-balance cycles). Results obtained by ground measurements and remote sensing are compared and show excellent correlation (r2 > 0.89), both for the ELA and for the mass balance, indicating that the remote-sensing method can be applied to glaciers where no ground data exist, on the scale of a mountain range or a given climatic area. The main differences can be attributed to discrepancies between the dates of image acquisition and field measurements. Cloud cover and recent snowfalls constitute the main restrictions of the image-based method.

The seasonal snowpack and meteorological factors associated with the accumulation and ablation of the snowpack were monitored for 11 years in a mountainous area in the warm-temperate zone of Japan. No notable rise was observed in mean wintertime air temperature, but an increase was seen in the difference between the maximum and minimum air temperatures. Precipitation exhibited annual variability but no notable reduction over the measurement period. The length of the continuous snow-cover period increased slightly over the 11 years, but no trend in variability was observed. The maximum snow depth and maximum water equivalent of snow varied greatly from year to year, depending on the amount of snowfall. In a heavy-snow year, about 1600 mm of water, which is almost the mean annual precipitation for the whole of Japan, was found to be temporarily stored in the snowpack.

In recent decades, several ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula have diminished in size as a result of climate warming. Using aerial photographic, satellite and survey data we document a similar retreat of Jones Ice Shelf, which was another small ice shelf on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. This ice shelf was roughly stable between 1947 and 1969, but in the early 1970s it began to retreat and had completely disappeared by early 2003. Jones Ice Shelf has two ice fronts only a few kilometres apart and its retreat provides a unique opportunity to examine how different ice fronts retreat when subjected to similar climate forcing. We mapped the retreat of both the east and west ice fronts of Jones Ice Shelf and found that, although individual episodes of retreat may be related to particularly warm summers, the overall progress of retreat of the two ice fronts has been rather different. This suggests that in this case the course of retreat is controlled by the geometry of the embayment and location of pinning points as well as climatic events.

A new physically based distributed surface mass-balance model is presented for Alpine glaciers. Based on the Crocus prognostic snow model, it resolves both the temporal (1 hour time-step) and spatial (200 m grid-step) variability of the energy and mass balance of glaciers. Mass-balance reconstructions for the period 1981–2004 are produced using meteorological reconstruction from the SAFRAN meteorological model for Glacier de Saint-Sorlin and Glacier d’Argentière, French Alps. Both glaciers lost mass at an accelerated rate in the last 23 years. The spatial distribution of precipitation within the model grid is adjusted using field mass-balance measurements. This is the only correction made to the SAFRAN meteorological input to the glacier model, which also includes surface atmospheric temperature, moisture, wind and all components of downward radiation. Independent data from satellite imagery and geodetic measurements are used for model validation. With this model, glacier sensitivity to climate change can be separately evaluated with respect to a full range of meteorological parameters, whereas simpler models, such as degree-day models, only account for temperature and precipitation. We provide results for both mass balance and equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) using a generic Alpine glacier. The sensitivity of the ELA to air temperature alone is found to be 125 m °C–1, or 160 m °C¯1 if concurrent (Stefan–Boltzmann) longwave radiation change is taken into account.

An enhanced temperature-index glacier melt model, incorporating incoming shortwave radiation and albedo, is presented. The model is an attempt to combine the high temporal resolution and accuracy of physically based melt models with the lower data requirements and computational simplicity of empirical melt models, represented by the ‘degree-day’ method and its variants. The model is run with both measured and modelled radiation data, to test its applicability to glaciers with differing data availability. Five automatic weather stations were established on Haut Glacier d’Arolla, Switzerland, between May and September 2001. Reference surface melt rates were calculated using a physically based energy-balance melt model. The performance of the enhanced temperature-index model was tested at each of the four validation stations by comparing predicted hourly melt rates with reference melt rates. Predictions made with three other temperature-index models were evaluated in the same way for comparison. The enhanced temperature-index model offers significant improvements over the other temperature-index models, and accounts for 90–95% of the variation in the reference melt rate. The improvement is lower, but still significant, when the model is forced by modelled shortwave radiation data, thus offering a better alternative to existing models that require only temperature data input.

We present results of a detailed investigation of surface motion across the tongue of a polythermal glacier, midre Lovenbreen, Svalbard, during the 1999 summer. Surface velocities in the warm-based upper tongue increased during periods of enhanced surface melting and rainfall events, and force-balance analysis indicates that these velocity variations were locally forced, probably by fluctuations in subglacial water pressure. Surface speed-ups were also observed on the cold-based lower tongue (which acted as a sticky spot, through which there was minimal subglacial drainage for most of the summer), but these were largely non-locally forced by longitudinal coupling to the faster-moving ice up-glacier. On one occasion, however, a large, rapid input of surface water to the glacier reduced the basal drag beneath the cold-based lower tongue, presumably due to hydraulic jacking. This resulted in locally forced enhanced surface velocities across the entire tongue, accompanied by a breaching of the lower tongue and an outburst of subglacially stored water.

Previously discovered regularity in vertical profiles of net balance, bn(z), on ten glaciers in Norway also exists in profiles of both winter, bw(z), and summer, bs(z), seasonal balances. All three profiles, unlike those of many glaciers elsewhere in the world, are remarkably linear. Variations of gradients, dbw/dz and dbs/dz, from year to year are small and correlate poorly with glacier-total balances bw and bs. Glacier-to-glacier correlation is weak for both gradients but is strongly positive for bw and bs. There are two direct consequences of these properties of the gradients that apply to both seasonal balances bw and bs. First, because db/dz varies so little from year to year, the difference in balance, ∆b, from year to year is nearly the same over the entire glacier, except near the top and bottom of its altitude range. Therefore, balance at a site near the middle of the altitude range of the glacier correlates very well with glacier-total balance. Second, this correlation, combined with the strong positive correlation of balance from glacier to glacier, is the reason balance at one altitude on one glacier correlates well with glacier-total balance at other nearby glaciers.

Glacier area changes in the Pumqu river basin, Tibetan Plateau, between the 1970s and 2001 are analyzed, based on the Chinese Glacier Inventory and ASTER images. A new glacier inventory is obtained by visually interpreting the remote-sensing images and the digital elevation model. By comparing the two inventories, glacier area changes over the past 30 years are revealed. The results show that the area loss is about 9.0% and the shrinkage trend continues according to the meteorological data.

This paper reports detailed textural and gas measurements conducted in cold basal ice (–17°C from the margin of Taylor Glacier, an outlet glacier of the East Antarctic ice sheet. The analyzed samples were retrieved from a basal ice sequence excavated at the end of a subglacial tunnel dug near the glacier snout. The basal sequence exhibits two contrasting ice facies, defined as the englacial and stratified facies. On the one hand, analysis of ice crystal textures from the basal ice sequence provides evidence for localized ductile deformation, especially within the stratified facies where significant dynamic recrystallization was detected. On the other hand, high-resolution gas analyses reveal that strong changes in gas composition occurred at the structural interfaces of the stratified facies. These gas composition changes are typical of melting–refreezing processes but are not associated with any significant loss of gas volume. Given the specific subglacial thermal conditions at the margin of Taylor Glacier, we interpret this phenomenon as resulting from microscopic phase changes involving selective gas redistribution through the pre-melt phase. It is argued that such processes may play an important role in the post-genetic geochemical evolution of cold debris-laden ice and may be enhanced through intense strain conditions.

Data from the mouth of the decelerating Whillans Ice Stream (WIS), West Antarctica, spanning 42 years are reviewed. Deceleration has continued, with local areas of both thinning and thickening occurring. The mean thinning rate is 0.48 ± 0.77 ma–1. No consistent overall pattern is observed. Ice thickens immediately upstream of Crary Ice Rise where deceleration and divergence are strongest, suggesting expanded upstream influence of the ice rise. Thinning is prevalent on the Ross Ice Shelf. Grounding-line advance at a rate of 0.3 km a–1 is detected in a few locations. Basal stresses vary across an ice-stream transect with a zone of enhanced flow at the margin. Marginal shear is felt at the ice-stream center. Mass-balance values are less negative, but larger errors of earlier measurements mask any possible temporal pattern. Comparisons of the recent flow field with flow stripes suggest WIS contributes less ice to the deep subglacial channel carved by Mercer Ice Stream and now flows straighter. The general lack of geometric changes suggests that the regional velocity decrease is due to changing basal conditions.

In the summers of 2001 and 2002, glacio-climatological research was performed at 4110–4120 m a.s.l. on the Belukha snow/firn plateau, Siberian Altai. Hundreds of samples from snow pits and a 21 m snow/firn core were collected to establish the annual/seasonal/monthly depth–accumulation scale, based on stable-isotope records, stratigraphic analyses and meteorological and synoptic data. The fluctuations of water stable-isotope records show well-preserved seasonal variations. The δ18O and δD relationships in precipitation, snow pits and the snow/firn core have the same slope to the covariance as that of the global meteoric water line. The origins of precipitation nourishing the Belukha plateau were determined based on clustering analysis of δ18O and d-excess records and examination of synoptic atmospheric patterns. Calibration and validation of the developed clusters occurred at event and monthly timescales with about 15% uncertainty. Two distinct moisture sources were shown: oceanic sources with d-excess <12‰, and the Aral–Caspian closed drainage basin sources with d-excess >12‰. Two-thirds of the annual accumulation was from oceanic precipitation, of which more than half had isotopic ratios corresponding to moisture evaporated over the Atlantic Ocean. Precipitation from the Arctic/Pacific Ocean had the lowest deuterium excess, contributing one-tenth to annual accumulation.

Five statistical techniques to determine peaks in ice-core time series are presented and compared. The ice-core time series, representing different signal characteristics, comprise electrical conductivity measurements (ECM), dielectric properties (DEP) and sulphate. Three techniques (I–III) utilize all the data in the time series to estimate significant thresholds for identifying peaks. Technique IV applies a moving window and conducts a statistical inference within the defined window. In technique V, a family of smoothed estimates of the ice-core time series is produced, and statistical tests are performed on the significant changes in the derivative of the estimates. The correction of the significance level, α, due to multiple tests is introduced and implemented in techniques II–V. The threshold obtained by techniques I–III is determined by the influence of the error term on the global variance estimate, whereas the threshold of IV is determined by the data within the window. The success of identifying peaks with technique V is dependent on the redundancy in the data, i.e. the sampling rate. It is concluded that techniques II and III are superior to the other techniques due to their simplicity and robustness.
