This study examines the occurrences of new lexical borrowings in a French newspaper corpus to determine whether the phenomenon of English lexical borrowings (Anglicisms) is different than the phenomenon of non-English borrowings. Based on a search for all occurrences of new lexical borrowings in a corpus, it is found that new Anglicisms outnumber all other new borrowings combined. When cross-checking these results against the online archives of another French newspaper, it is found that the Anglicisms are more productive than borrowings with similar frequencies from other languages. Additionally, qualitative findings show that new Anglicisms are more likely than other borrowings to be integrated into the French lexicon. In French, Anglicisms are employed for different reasons than lexical borrowings from other languages.

Le présent article a pour but de réexaminer la valeur du mot sans, généralement considéré comme préposition négative d’avec. En limitant l'examen des emplois de sans aux cas où celui-ci est suivi d'un constituant nominal, nous démontrons (i) que les contextes syntaxiques dans lesquels apparaissent sans et avec sont sensiblement différents, et (ii) que la valeur négative de sans ne peut pas être assimilée à la négation de la construction en avec. Il est proposé une hypothèse selon laquelle sans est un négatif incorporant le ne discordantiel et que le régime nominal de sans présente sémantiquement une structure propositionnelle.

Cet article traite d'un tour spécifique au français: la structure concessive avec avoir beau + infinitif (Il aura beau sonner, je ne lui ouvrirai pas (Riegel et alii 1996: 520), à comprendre comme: Il pourra bien sonner/Il pourra sonner autant qu'il veut, je ne lui ouvrirai pas). Nous nous y interrogeons sur la nature du lien syntaxique qui s'instaure, en français moderne, entre les deux membres de cette structure « en diptyque ». Nous commençons par un aperçu critique des descriptions dont la séquence a fait l'objet dans les grammaires du français contemporain; nous tirons ensuite quelques enseignements de l'évolution des emplois entre moyen français et français contemporain. Pour conclure cette étude à caractère préliminaire, nous formulons quelques hypothèses relatives au scénario diachronique de coalescence dans lequel notre structure semble engagée.

This paper presents the results of a sociolinguistic analysis of ne use/non-use in the spoken French of learners of French as a second language enrolled in their first or fourth year of undergraduate studies in a bilingual university in Ontario, Canada. Specifically, it examines the impact of various linguistic and extra-linguistic factors on the students’ use of the variants and compares the patterns found to previous research on ne use/non-use among Ontario high school FSL learners and on other sociolinguistic variables in the speech of the same university FSL learners under study here. The paper concludes that while many of the same influences are at work in the speech of both the university and high school learners, the precise influences appear to be modified with continued study and that many of these patterns are similar across variables within the university FSL learners’ speech.

This study presents data from an elicitation study on French size and color adjectives in noun phrases (DPs), both early acquired structures. Thirty-two francophone children aged 3–5 years participated in the study. Adjectives were elicited using specially designed puzzles and spontaneous speech corpora. We observed that errors in French variable adjectives are produced in the early acquisition stages, especially in the context of feminine colour DPs. We propose that the source of difficulty for feminine variable adjectives is the retrieval of a lexicalized form that competes with the masculine adjective denoting the same concept.
