The Journal's February 1998 issue (57.1) carried an error in Thomas R. Metcalf's review of Marina Carter, Servants, Sirdars and Settlers: Indians in Mauritius, 1834–1874. On page 250, Hugh Tinker's A New System of Slavery was erroneously cited as published in 1994 instead of 1974; the sentence on page 250 beginning with, “As in other colonies, the authorities sought to by pass laws and taxation to confine ex-indentured Indians to plantation labor” should read, “As in other colonies, the authorities sought by pass laws and taxation to confine ex-indentured Indians to plantation labor.”
