Samples of hays (132) and silages (146) were analysed for calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and manganese. Assessments were made of their ability to supply minerals to cattle in accordance with the A.R.C. (1965) minimal requirements.

The concentrations of all these minerals were greater in silage than in hay. The proportions of the hay samples which in 20 lb of dry matter, provided inadequate amounts of minerals to maintain cattle of 1100 lb live weight were 4% (Ca), 98% (P),21% (Mg), 90% (Cu) and 39% (Mn). In a similar manner 15 lb of silage dry matter proved inadequate to a comparable degree. For the samples examined 4% (Ca), 99% (P), 19% (Mg), 62% (Cu) and 15% (Mn) did not meet the proposed standards.

Data are presented to indicate the amounts by which a variety of cattle diets based on hay and silage fail to meet the A.R.C. (1965) minimal requirements in respect of calcium and phosphorus intakes for milk yields up to 4 gal.

In a series of experiments, each of 6 weeks' duration, non-pregnant Romney, Scottish Blackface and Tasmanian fine-wool Merino ewes were individually penned in an outdoor environment and allocated a constant ration within a range from 8 to 30 g of a standard dried-grass pellet per kg live weight. Maintenance requirements were calculated from the regression of live-weight change per unit weight on intake per unit weight. Comparable values for the three breeds were computed as 8·4, 9·2 and 14·0 g DOM (digestible organic matter)/kg/day for Romney, Blackface and Merino respectively, the latter being significantly higher than for the two British breeds. Estimates of requirements per unit change in live weight, after allowing for maintenance, were 5·1, 4·6 and 3·0 g DOM/g live-weight change for the three breeds. Methods of estimation of energy requirements and the reasons for differences between breeds are discussed.

Samples of prefemoral, thoracic and intestinal duct lymph have been collected under acute conditions from three cows grazing pasture and the lipid composition compared with that of plasma.

The concentration of lipids in peripheral lymph was 16–36% of that found in plasma; the fatty acid compositions of peripheral lymph lipids were similar to those of plasma.

Of the fatty acids present in intestinal and thoracic lymph 86 and 76% were esterified as triglycerides, 10 and 13% as phospholipids and 3 and 5% as cholesterol esters, respectively. Saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids were preferentially esterified as triglycerides whereas di- and tri-unsaturated acids were associated more with phospholipids. The content of di- and tri-unsaturated fatty acids was greater in the triglycerides and phospholipids derived from the intestine than in those found in plasma.

The di- and tri-unsaturated fatty acids in intestinal and thoracic lymph were transported mainly in the form of triglycerides (45–62%) and phospholipids (21–33%). Cholesterol esters were quantitatively of minor importance in the transport of these fatty acids in lymph. The intestine does not appear to play any major role in the formation of the high concentration of cholesterol ‘linolenate’ found in bovine plasma.

The process of lipid digestion in the cow appears to be similar to that found in sheep.

Skin temperatures, deep body temperatures and respiratory rates have been measured in Southdown and Merino sheep following feeding, and during infra-red irradiation, rumen infusions of hot and cold water, and cold exposure induced by shearing. The increases in respiratory rate and skin temperatures induced by infra-red heating and the heat increment of feeding were reversed by addition of iced water to the rumen and were suppressed by shearing. These responses could not be systematically related to particular body temperatures in the sheep and appeared to be continuously variable rather than ‘all-or-none’ phenomena. Considerable overlap was observed between respiratory and vasomotor mechanisms of thermoregulation. Measurements of the surface area and weight of ears and legs showed that these regions contribute approximately 23% of the surface area and 8% of the body weight in Merino sheep. Calculations suggested that up to 70% of the additional heat produced in the 2 h after feeding in sheep may be stored in the tissues through increase in mean body temperature. Sheep kept in short wool throughout the winter appeared to establish a new thermoregulatory ‘set-point’ associated with lower rectal temperatures than those in sheep with a full fleece.

Dry-matter intake (D.M.I.) from Panicum maximum(guinea grass) was studied in digestibility trials with Holstein and water buffalo bulls and in a feeding trial with lactating cows.

Differences in voluntary D.M.I. per unit body weight0·73 between the Holsteins and water buffaloes were not significant. Average D.M.I. for all bulls in all main trials was 2·16 kg per 100 kg B.W. Average D.M.I. by the lactating cows was 2·08 kg per 100 kg B.W., for all practical purposes the same as for the bulls.

D.M.I. was not related to stage of maturity or season of harvest of the guinea grass. Intakes of digestible protein, T.D.N., and digestible energy in different seasons and at different growth stages were related to the percentage of those nutrients in the grass.

Correlation coefficients were 0·68 between D.M.I. and B.W.0·73, 0·59 between D.M.I. and T.D.N. content, and 0·58 between D.M.I. and crude protein content, D.M.I. was not closely related to dry-matter content (r = 0·30) or crude fibre content (r= 0–01) of the guinea grass.

This experiment was carried out in a newly reclaimed desert area south-west of Alexandria. The purpose was to study the effect of breeding Barki ewes more than once per year on body weights and mortality rates of their lambs. Lambs were weighed 24 h after birth and at the ages of 1, 2, 2·5 (weaning age), 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 12 months.

The experiment comprised three groups of single-born lambs of both sexes. The first group included 385 lambs born (in October–November) to ewes lambing once per year; tho second group comprised 155 lambs born (in January–February) to ewes lambing twice in twelve months and the third comprised 102 lambs also born in January–February to ewes lambing thrice in two consecutive years.

Lambs born to ewes lambing once were heavier from the age of 1 month to the age of 5 months than lambs born to ewes lambing twice in the same year or three times in two consecutive years. However, the three groups of lambs did not significantly differ in their body weights from 5 to 12 months of age.

Rebreedi ng did not significantly affect the mortality rate of lambs at the three studied ago periods, i.e. from birth to 1 month of age, from 1 month to weaning and from weaning to the age of 12 months.

Sex had a significant effect on body weights of lambs but did not affect their mortality rates.

Field experiments with Italian ryegrass cut four times a year compared aqueous ammonia with ammonium sulphate and with a mixture of ammonium nitrate and urea (equal parts by weight). In 1963 four rates of nitrogen, 224, 448, 672 and 896 lb/acre, were applied as single and split dressings of injected aqueous ammonia, as solid ammonium sulphate and as injected solution of ammonium sulphate. There was little difference in total dry-matter yield between a single injection of aqueous ammonia and the split dressing of solid. Injecting ammonium sulphate solution eliminated scorch caused by single applications of solid supplying 448 lb N/acre or more and gave significantly greater dry-matter yields. A single application of 448 lb N/acre provided enough nitrogen to sustain the response of the grass to the end of the season.

In 1964 a single injection of aqueous ammonia was compared with ammonium nitrate/urea applied as solid or solution at 280, 560 and 840 lb N/acre. There was no difference in total dry-matter yield between aqueous ammonia and ammonium nitrate/urea at rates of 560 and 840 lb/acre. At 280 lb/acre a split dressing of solid produced most dry matter. More than 280 lb N/acre was required, therefore, as a single application in spring to last the whole season, but this rate of nitrogen applied as a split dressing was almost sufficient to give maximum yield.

In both experiments the seasonal distribution of dry matter was similar for single and split applications except in 1963 when large single injections of ammonium sulphate produced greater yields at the third cut than the split applications. The percentage of nitrogen recovered in the harvested grass decreased as nitrogen rate was increased and was greater from single than split applications. Recovery of nitrogen from aqueous ammonia was less efficient from four injections than one, and was greater in 1964 than 1963 due to better penetration of the sward by injector tines. Least nitrogen was recovered from surface-applied solutions of ammonium nitrate/urea. Regressions of dry-matter yield on nitrogen yield showed that single injections of aqueous ammonia were as efficient as other fertilizers tested.

The Woburn Market-Garden experiment was started in 1942 to investigate the development of a market-garden type soil from an ordinary agricultural soil on light land by applying organic manures regularly. The ‘organics’ used were farmyard manure, sewage sludge, and composts of these with straw and farm waste. The use of sewage sludge was discontinued in 1961 and the yields of the crops up till then were published by Mann & Patterson (1963).

The results of progeny tests of families of F1 and F2 selections derived from S 100 white clover are reported. The selection criterion was a high total nodule mass per plant coupled with an effective symbiosis with a known effective strain of Rhizobium trifolii. Selection for increased nodule volume produced a correlated increase in nodule number. F1 and F2 had significantly higher means than S 100 but F2 was not significantly higher than F1.

Scores for nodule mass showed a significant increase in F1 and a smaller but insignificant increase in F2. An estimate of the efficiency of nitrogen fixation on a unit-nodule basis indicated that as nodule size increased efficiency decreased.

During the 4· to 9·week stage Ross Chunky H broilers were fed on diets containing two varieties of field beans at 0, 10, 20 and 30 % rates of inclusion. No significant treatment effects were observed on live-weight gains, amounts of food eaten or food-conversion ratios.

In an experiment to determine the effect of photoperiods of 11, 13 and 15 h on the floral development of five determinate varieties of Phaseolus vulgaris it has been shown that long photoperiods bring about the abscission of flower buds on the main axis and secondary branches of three varieties native to South America. On the basis of these results it is concluded that under field conditions it is the long photoperiods of the British summer which are largely responsible for the poor development and eventual abscission of flower buds in these varieties for most of the growing season.

The changes in phosphate availability that occurred when fertilizer phosphate was incorporated in moist uncropped soil were examined by storing fertilized soil in the open for periods up to 3 years before a final test crop was grown. Superphosphate was the standard source as it was fully available initially and therefore provided a measure of the rate of immobilization of phosphate on the four soils used. The extent to which this rate was modified by slower rates of dissolution of non-water-soluble sources was examined, using dicalcium phosphate (powder and granular), basic slag and ground North African rock phosphate (GNAP).

Powdered dicalcium phosphate and basic slag in general behaved similarly to superphosphate, indicating very rapid dissolution. The only exception was a slightly lower rate of dissolution of slag on the calcareous soil. Other than in the very acid soil, the rate of dissolution of GNAP was slow so that the available phosphate was not similar to the superphosphate treatment until after at least the second year. On the calcareous soil GNAP was practically inert. Granular dicalcium phosphate was the only consistent slow-release source. It gave available phosphate levels which were initially lower, but subsequently higher, than those from superphosphate. In the absence of a crop, cumulative assessments of phosphate availability were not possible.

The pertinence of these results to the problem of maintaining a high soil phosphate status is discussed.

The growth of 120 Friesian heifers born into one herd over a period of 12 years was studied for the period from 6 months of age to calving at about 30–35 months of age. Live weights were recorded weekly and rates of live-weight gain were calculated for each 3-month period for each animal. Δt 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age the heifers weighed 360, 590, 800 and 950 lb. The coefficients of variation of live weight did not vary with age and averaged ±10·0%. Coefficients of variation of live-weight gain increased from ± 20% at 6–9 months of age to ±60% at 24–27 months of age. Growth rate declined by 0·02 lb/day from 12 months to 30 months of age for animals under constant managerial conditions. Heifers wintered indoors grew faster than those wintered outdoors. The growth of younger animals was decreased more by outdoor wintering (a reduction of 0·6 lb/day at 15 months) than was the growth rate of older animals (a reduction of 0·3 lb/day at 21 months of age). When live-weight gain was low in winter there was marked compensatory growth at grass the following summer. Pregnant heifers grew 0·1 lb/day faster in early pregnancy and 0·6 lb/day faster in the last 4 months of pregnancy than did barren heifers.

There was no appreciable difference between the live-weight gain of spring- and autumn-born heifers. With an autumn calving policy spring-born heifers were served and conceived 135 days earlier and weighed 106 lb less at calving than did autumn-born heifers. There was little difference in the milk yield of the two groups in 305 days of the first lactation.

The regression equation of live weight (lb) on age (months) to 3rd calving was W = 1449 – 2027 e-0·042t. It was concluded that in the interests of economic rearing the dairy farmer could with advantage exercise greater control of the relationship between nutrition and growth during high cost winter periods and low cost summer periods.

The yield of crops in the low rainfall areas of eastern Kenya has been shown to vary within each season according to the crops grown in preceding seasons. This phenomenon of crop sequence was associated more especially with the amount of soil nitrates remaining at all depths in the soil than with the amount of water that may be left. The quantity of nitrates left by a crop was generally related to its vegetative bulk, its rooting habit and duration on the ground, and increased as the crops were ranked in the order: local maize, short-term maize, silage maize, beans and fallow. The beneficial effect of a bean crop or a fallow was reflected in a third crop when the intermediate crop had a low nitrogen requirement.

The persistence of the relative differences in the nitrate levels in the soil would seem to be due to their low mobility under leaching.

The increase in yield of a crop was shown to be due to the more rapid development of the crop when nitrate supplies were more plentiful. When the duration of the rains was short the earlier, more abundant flowering resulting from the rapid growth gave better grain set, and hence greater and more reliable yields. When crops matured in dry weather the availability of soil nitrates at depths of up to 4 ft had a positive influence on yield.

Although rainfall was the main determinant of yield within each season, the use of fallowing to store water from one season to the next was inefficient. Similar amounts could be held in cropped land if late rains occurred. If early rains were plentiful the benefit of stored water could be lost by the thorough wetting of the soil profile.

In spite of the entomophilic structure of the rape flower, which is very attractive to nectar- and pollen-gathering bees, the crop gives good yields without insect pollination.

Fifty-two Large White gilts, arranged in thirteen groups of four litter sisters, were allocated at mating to one of four treatment groups. These treatments, arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial, allowed daily energy intakes in pregnancy of 8·3 Meal (H(e)) or 5·2 Meal (L(e)) and of average daily intake during lactation of 20 Meal (h(e)) or 13·8 Meal (m(e)). Daily intakes of protein, minerals and vitamins were similar for all treatments. There were no consistent differences in health or breeding regularity between the treatments.

The H(e) sows had a net gain in pregnancy 22 kg greater than the L(e) sows. Feeding the higher level in lactation (h(e) resulted in a reduced sow weight loss during lactation of 20, 12 and 10 kg in the first, second and third parities respectively, as compared with the m(e) sows. There were no consistent effects on the numbers of pigs born apart from the first litter in which L(e) sows produced significantly larger litters at birth. The higher energy intakes in pregnancy and lactation led to very similar increases in the weights of the piglets, of the order of 0.1 kg at birth, 0.4 kg at 3 weeks of age, and 1.1 kg at 8 weeks of age. Sowsgiven the same overall energy intake throughout their reproductive life (H(e) m(e), L(e) h(e)) at the end of the third litter had similar live weights and had produced a similar total weight of weaned pigs. The practical implications of these results are discussed.

In many nutritional experiments with cut pasture the voluntary intake and digestibility is determined with pen-fed sheep. However, the voluntary intakes of sheep are extremely variable, the between-animal coefficient of variation varying between 13·1% and 10·5% (Blaxter, Wainman & Wilson, 1961; Minson, Harris, Raymond & Milford, 1964). Thus each pasture cut must be fed to large numbers of animals if differences between pasture species and varieties are to be detected with significance. (Heaney, Pritchard & Pigden, 1968.)

Timothy [S. 50], meadow fescue [S. 53], perennial ryegrass [S. 23], Italian ryegrass [S. 22] and cocksfoot [S. 143] were grown together in all possible pair combinations at two levels of fertility, in a pot experiment. Dry weight of herbage and tiller counts were determined at 136 and 198 days from sowing. The data were analysed for competitive effects by the application of the diallel analysis technique of Durrant (1965). The competitive effects were largely compensatory in type with dominant species such as Italian ryegrass and perennial ryegrass increasing in mixtures, relative to their pure stand values, more than species such as timothy and meadow fescue declined. This resulted in a tendency for the mixture means to exceed their mid-constituent values.

The competitive effects on the reciprocal differences were seen to be predominantly of the alpha type; that is, there was a constant increase or decrease in one or more species when grown with others. The alpha values were found to be correlated with the unmixed species values so that ƀ, the mean effect, wasappropriately calculated from alpha. The over-all value of ƀ was –1.216, which means that for each gram difference in weight between the species when grown by themselves there was 2.452 g increase in difference between the species when grown in mixtures, the larger species increasing and/or the smaller species decreasing. There were significant differences in ƀ values between harvests, the ƀ competitive effects being approximately twice as large in the more mature plants. Although the alpha competitive effects increased in magnitude with time the species order remained relatively constant, and in terms of competitive ability the species could be placed in the ascending order, meadow fescue, timothy, cocksfoot, perennial ryegrass and Italian ryegrass.

Tiller number showed a similar pattern, but the ƀ values were smaller, and not significant. Nevertheless competition had differential effects upon the plant weight/ tillering relationship and it is possible that the resultant morphological changes would influence the re-growth quality of the species.

The conclusions derived from the analysis of reciprocal differences in this work is compared with earlier examples.

Thirty-four soils from the Rothamsted Experiments were exhaustively cropped with ryegrass in the glasshouse. The concentration and yield of potassium in ryegrass tops and the potassium intensity in the soil were measured every 4 weeks, after harvesting the grass.

The change in K-intensity of soils, rich in potassium, with exhaustion differed from that of ‘poor’ soils. This change was related to the rate of change of the cumulative K-yield. The rate of change of soil K-intensity demarcated periods of intense and limited exhaustion and partial recovery of the soil during cropping.

The cumulative K-yield of ryegrass was very significantly related to the K-intensity of the uncropped soil; the ‘16-week’ yield was slightly better related than the ‘60-week’ yield. For Park Grass soils, the relationship was improved by allowing for variations in soil pH.

The K-intensity of all soils, with or without manuring, decreased to nearly 10-3 (M)½ in (AR)0 units after 16 weeks cropping, although large differences in K-yield persisted until much later.

K-buffer capacity per unit clay content of the soil, measured by a laboratory method, was inversely related to the K-intensity of the uncropped soil. The K-buffer capacities of soils rich in potassium, measured in laboratory and glasshouse experiments, were significantly related, but were unrelated for ‘poor’ soils. The K-buffer capacity (laboratory method) of Rothamsted soils with different manurial treatments was only very approximately related to the cumulative K-yield.

Less K was taken up from all Rothamsted soils given nitrogen fertilizer in the field and their K intensities were also smaller than the corresponding soils without ‘N’. Field liming of acid soils decreased their K-intensity and increased their K-buffer capacity, presumably because more potassium was removed by the field crop.

A rapid method is suggested for measuring potassium intensities of soils.

The use of the correct N dressing for beet is important, as any excess decreases juice purity and profit, and may decrease sugar yield, but no analytical method will at present predict the best dressing in any particular field. The concentration of nitrate in leaves and petioles of beet was determined to test if it would determine the need for top-dressings of N. Beet on seventeen field trials in 3 years testing N were sampled. Nitrate in a wet tissue extract was determined by reducing to ammonia with titanous sulphate and subsequent distillation.

The petiole nitrate concentration decreased sharply with time, from around 1000 ppm in wet tissue in early June to less than 100 ppm in early September. The nitrate concentrations were closely related to nitrogen dressing, and the rapid decline in concentration was decreased by top-dressings. Comparison of samples taken in June showed that most of the variation between the experiments could be accounted for by the different ages of the plants. Sodium fertilizer had no effect on nitrate content.

Petiole nitrate was inversely related to juice purity and sugar concentration, especially when the nitrate content exceeded 700 ppm in June.

On average, petiole nitrate concentrations about 800 ppm in June were associated with the largest sugar yields, but the content could not be used to predict nitrogen top-dressing requirement accurately at individual sites.

Measuring NO3-N cannot at present be recommended as a method for deciding how much nitrogen fertilizer to use, but it has value for detecting severe deficiencies and in research.
