It may be concluded from this trial that the making of stack silage is a useful method of conserving surplus grass, particularly of the after-math type, when good haymaking weather may not obtain. Though no actual feeding trials were carried out with the silage, it was fed to stock with satisfactory results and formed a large proportion of their winterration.

This paper deals with the final phase of the investigations described in the two papers immediately preceding it in the present issue of this Journal. These earlier papers may therefore be consulted for complete details concerning the general design and wider issues of the work as a whole (Woodman & Evans, 1938a, b).

The determination of in vitro dry-matter digestibility (DMD) of grass and pasture legumes under both temperate and tropical conditions is well established (Tilley & Terry, 1963; Minson & McLeod, 1972). One application of the in vitro DMD estimation of pasture samples is, together with an estimate of faecal output, the measurement of the herbage dry-matter intake of grazing cattle. Pasture samples are usually collected with oesophageal fistulated cattle. This technique is well documented and has been reviewed by a number of authors (Langlands, 1975; Minson et al. 1976).

The fatty acid composition of the plasma free fatty acid and adipose tissue triacylglycerol fractions was determined in lean and fat selection lines of Texel-Oxford and Scottish Blackface sheep at the 6th year of divergent selection. The mean proportion of 18[ratio ]2n-6 in the triacylglycerol of subcutaneous backfat was 1·3-fold higher in the phenotypically fatter sheep in the fat lines than in the phenotypically leaner sheep in the lean lines. Regression analysis indicated a positive relationship between this fatty acid and backfat depth whereas the proportion of 18[ratio ]1n-9 in the tissue triacylglycerol was negatively related to fatness. The proportions of 18[ratio ]2n-6 and of other polyunsaturated fatty acids in the plasma free fatty acid fraction were much higher than in adipose triacylglycerol. For the Scottish Blackface sheep in the fed state, the mean proportion of 18[ratio ]2n-6 in plasma free fatty acid (measured on all sheep) was 1·4-fold greater in the fat line than in the lean line. Regression analysis indicated a positive relationship between the plasma content of this fatty acid and backfat thickness whereas the proportion of 18[ratio ]1n-9 in plasma free fatty acid showed a negative relationship with fatness. The relationship between the plasma proportion of 18[ratio ]2n-6 and fatness was not observed after 48 h of fasting; instead, the plasma proportion of 18[ratio ]0 was found to be positively related to fatness in the fasted state. In summary, this paper shows how plasma and adipose tissue fatty acid profiles differ, and it quantifies the effects of selection on the plasma profiles. Possible reasons for the difference in fatty acid profiles between adipose tissue and plasma are discussed in the paper. It is suggested that plasma 18[ratio ]2n-6 levels during the early post-weaning growth period should be investigated as indicators of future fatness.

From a mixed group of cross-bred steers slaughtered at the same age, up to 12 carcasses of similar weight from each of the five conformation classes were chosen using the European Economic Community (EEC) scale for the classification of carcasses of adult bovine animals. In the hindquarter of carcasses with better conformation the ratio of muscle to bone was higher with less internal fat and more subcutaneous fat, muscles were heavier and blockier, both the carcass and leg length were shorter. Short-thick muscles were associated with short-thick bones. The results indicate that the EEC scale is a useful method to discriminate between carcasses differing in composition. It is suggested that differences in muscle: bone ratio in cattle could reflect differences in the structure and shape of bones. The conclusions remain tentative until they are confirmed on a larger number of carcasses.

Rapeseed and mustard cultivars aro morphologically determinate but the growth of the raceme, which is a corymbose type, is indeterminate. On the raceme flower opening proceeds acropetally in a sequential manner with one or two flowers opening each day. Thus there is a considerable time lag between first and last flower opening within the same raceme. In these oil-seed crops, besides leaves both pod wall and stems are photosynthetically active and the share of assimilates contributed by these three organs to the growing seeds has been estimated to be 37, 32 and 31%, respectively (Brar & Thies, 1977). A rapid decline in leaf area during pod filling in rapeseed and mustard (Chauhan & Bhargava, 1984) and rape (Allen & Morgan, 1972) cultivars has been observed. The assimilate supply to the pods developing at different periods may, therefore, differ owing to a decline in the leaf source as well as increasing intornal competition between pods. In winter oil-seed rape (Brassica napus), both mutual competition for assimilates and shading resulting from excessive pod production have been reported to cause heavy seed and pod losses (Mendham, Shipway & Scott, 1981). No information is available for rapeseed and mustard cultivars on how different components of the pod, such as its weight, seed weight, number of seeds and seed oil percentage, change according to their position on the terminal raceme. This information may be useful in deciding the appropriate number of pods on a raceme for optimum yield.

In the process of manufacture of sugar from sugar beet, the sugar is first extracted from the beet by appropriate means, and the wet residue or pulp is then dried and sold for cattle feeding. The composition of the dried pulp or slices differs somewhat according to the nature of the process used in the extraction of the sugar. In the “diffusion” process, in which water is used, the extraction is very efficient, with the result that the sugar content of the dried pulp is low. In the Steffen process, in which press methods are used, a fair amount of sugar is left in the dried residues. In the de Vecchi process the sliced beets are dried before the extraction of the sugar takes place, and a certain proportion of these slices is occasionally marketed on the Continent as cattle food. The characteristic differences between these three types of pulp are shown by analyses given by Fangauf and Waldow(1).

The net assimilation rates (NAR) of three genotypes of cotton differing in their growth habit were studied under different spacings. The NARs of a very bushy type, G 67, and a comparatively less spreading type, IAN 560, were the same but that of a compact type, IAN 579, was twice as much when the leaf area index (LAI) was one. Though subsequently in G 67 and IAN 560 NAR under varying spacings either decreased less rapidly or remained steady, the decrease was nearly Hnear with increasing LAI. However, for IAN 579 dependence of NAR on LAI was generally positive indicating genotypic improvement. Under different spacings the leaf-density dependance of NAR appeared to have been decreased in IAN 560, but was nearly absent in IAN 579 with more efficiency towards increasing the yield of seed cotton.

In the accompanying article attention is drawn to a source of error which arises in grading coarse and fine sand subsequent to dispersion. The method of mechanical analysis in which the error arises, and to which the writer refers, is the revised official method adopted several years ago by the Agricultural Education Association(1). The usual procedure is to wash the dispersed soil on to a No. 70 I.M.M. sieve with a jet of hot water, and to rub it gently with a rubber pestle or the finger until no more will pass through. Robinson(2) states that this rubbing is generally unnecessary. The writer has found, however, that even prolonged washing and rubbing with a rubber pestle are ineffective in removing all the fine sand. In the wet mixture the sands are held together closely by surface tension. In order to overcome this, it would seem reasonable first to dry the sieve and its contents at 105° C. and give a further light sieving. This has been done with a large variety of soils, and it has been found that an extremely high proportion of fine sand is withheld when working with certain soils. The amount of fine sand sieved out of the dried mixture increases or decreases in proportion to the amount of total sands present. This is illustrated in the accompanying graph (Fig. 1), where it is to be noticed that, in soils increasing in total sands from 50 per cent (or thereabouts) upwards, the error begins to assume serious proportions.

(1) Animals on a calcium-deficient diet suffer periodically from loss of appetite though the ration is in every other respect satisfactory.

(2) The results of twenty-two digestion trials show no enhanced effect on the digestibility of the organic constituents of the food on adding calcium carbonate to a lime-deficient ration.

The average of 160 intercalving periods of 47 imported and 33 home–reared purebred Holsteins in western Nigeria during 1967–75 was 628( ± 45) days. The probable effects of seven variables including origin of cow, sex of calf, season of calving, age of cow at calving, parity, year of calving and calf birth weight were investigated through an intra-class linear regression model in which the first three factors were treated as qualitative and the last four as quantitative factors. Origin of cow, sex of calf and season of calving did not significantly affect calving interval. Effects of age at calving, parity, year of calving and calf birth weight were highly significant (P < 0·01) but individual effects adjusted for others were not quite significant. These four quantitative factors were, however, highly interrelated; simple correlations which varied between 0·33 and 0·86 were highly significant. Interactions between the two sets of factors were negligible.

Many biological experiments and almost all quantitative genetic studies draw conclusions from differences between families. Such differences are caused as much by heritable as by non-heritable sources. This paper investigates the impact of seed quality on the expression of quantitative variability among 20 highly inbred lines of Nicotiana rustica using ten seed categories representing different pollination times, seed sizes, seed positions in the capsule and seed maturity. Analysis of variance revealed that while the mean performance of the inbred lines remained more or less the same across all the seed categories, their individual performances differed widely, showing a highly significant interaction between lines and seed categories. This interaction accounted for up to 12% of the total variation and was largely attributable to late pollinations and immature seed. Seed categories were also the main source of heterogeneity among the within-line variances, but only immature seed lowered the correlation between the inbred means. In general, seed quality affected the developmental characters much less than the traits measured at or after flowering, and the expression of genetic variation was not critically affected by seed size or position. Immature seed, on the other hand, generated the highest level of unreliability in the comparative performance of lines and such seeds should therefore not be used in quantitative genetic experiments under any circumstances. Further implications of seed quality effects on the interpretation of genetic components are discussed in detail.

The quantitative relationships between “single value” properties and mechanical analysis of the soil are of some considerable importance in the textural classification of soils, and have received much attention since the original work on moisture equivalent by Briggs and McLane (1907). The empirical nature of the moisture equivalent, with the consequent trend towards standardisation of technique, has led to frequent re-examination of the relationship between the mechanical analysis and the “single value.”

The soil used in this experiment was a sandy clay low in phosphorus and in nitrogen from the College Farm. A (3 x 3 x 2) factorial experiment with three replications using an upland rice variety, Agbede, was carried out in the open on the College Farm between January and May 1963. Ten-litre plastic buckets 25 cm. deep and holding 11 kg. of soil, which was thoroughly mixed and the pH brought to 6.0 by liming, were used in growing the plants. These buckets were left standing on the ground, and there was no rain during the experimental period.

Thirty-two weaned Kenana bull calves were adequately fed to maximize growth and serially slaughtered at predetermined live weights of 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg. Eight animals were slaughtered at each slaughter point and the left side of each carcass dissected into individual muscles, bone, fat, tendons and fascia. Individual muscles were grouped into nine muscle groups and the distribution of intermuscular fat was studied in four anatomical regions. Huxley's (1932) allometric equation was used to describe the development of carcass tissues.

Relative to overall carcass side growth, fat was the fastest developing tissue, followed by muscle and bone tissues in descending order. The muscles of neck + thorax and abdominal muscles exhibited the fastest rate of growth relative to overall total side muscle growth, and the distal muscles of both limbs exhibited the slowest rate of relative growth. Relative to the rate of side fat deposition throughout the experiment, subcutaneous fat was deposited at a faster rate than intermuscular or kidney + channel fat. Intermuscular fat was deposited at different rates in the anatomical regions of the carcass.

The development of muscle groups was further examined in three arbitrary phases of the test period and revealed significant differences between phases in the rate at which each muscle group developed. Similar changes in the intensity of the rate at which fat was deposited in the subcutaneous region and between the muscles of the carcass or sites were evident.

Kenana cattle compare favourably with foreign dairy and beef breeds of cattle in muscle:bone ratio. Further studies are needed to evaluate the efficiency of meat production from Kenana cattle under different systems of management.

As reported in Part 1 (Gaili & Nour, 1980) a study was conducted to investigate the development of body components in Kenana cattle and to evaluate the potential of the breed for meat production. This paper is an account of the data which were obtained on the development of carcass tissues.

In a field study, the effect of N, P, K and their combinations on the growth, yield and nutrient uptake pattern by mesta (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was studied. No effect of N, P, K on growth characteristics like plant height and base diameter occurred up to 60 days. Effect of fertilizer treatments on plant growth was observed only after 90 days. The effect of N was more pronounced than P and K. Initially, growth of leaves was higher than both the bark and the wood. Nutrient concentration was at a maximum in the early stages of growth but declined with age and became steady at about 60 days. The quality of fibre obtained after 120 days of growth was assessed and the effect of nutrients on quality is discussed.

It has long been held that the treatment of grassland with nitrogenous fertilizers, and especially with ammonium salts, reduces the clover content. This method has been applied also to the treatment of lawns and sports fields with a view to reducing the clover content of the turf. It has been suggested that the effect of the ammonium salts is to encourage the growth of the grass in competition with the clover, and also that the ammonium ions are specifically toxic to the clover plant. Since there is a growing volume of evidence that ammonium ions are, in fact, available to many plants and may be used by them directly, without nitrate-formation, it was thought desirable to examine the effect of the application of ammonium sulphate to clover plants grown in pots, where competition from grasses was not a factor in the consideration of the effect of manurial treatment.

The effect of different cutting practices on the carbohydrate root reserves of Finnish red clover was studied. Cutting causes a rapid decrease in the insoluble sugars. The minimum is reached in about 12–15 days, independently of the time of cutting. However, the initial carbohydrate level is reached much more quickly in autumn than in June-July. The carbohydrate content of the roots in autumn is higher the later the second cut.

Cutting does not significantly affect the content of sucrose and other soluble sugars, the values for which are very low during June-August, but rise towards autumn.
