Beverage tea is produced from the immature shoots manually harvested from the perennial shrub Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze. Fresh green leaf is mechanically comminuted and converted to the black tea of commerce by a series of partially controlled biochemical oxidation reactions (Sanderson, 1972). The final, unrefined dried product represents some 20% of the initial fresh weight of crop, the actual dry-matter content of the harvested shoots determining the percentage made-tea return (Keegel, 1955). Dry-matter content, hence, influences yield in terms of black tea produced. Although theeffectsof environmental, agronomic and cultural factors on green leaf yield have been studied intensively, little work has been done on the influence of such factors on dry-matter content. The present study examines the effects of nitrogen application rates on dry-matter content in four genetically diverse clonal populations throughout the main production season and during the first period of the Central African off-season.

The object of this experiment was, in the first place, to see whether, with cotton experiments, there was an advantage in planting a larger number of seeds per hill than the customary number of three; and, in the second place, to see the effect of the interaction of time of thinning with varying numbers of seeds per hill.

In cotton breeding work, where trials of new strains have to be carried out as soon as sufficient seed is available, it is important to conserve seed in all possible ways. At the same time it is necessary to plant sufficient seed to give a full and even stand for all strains.

In experiments carried out in 1936–7 and 1937–8 stand counts, made soon after germination, showed the advantage of the higher seed rates in obtaining a quick and full stand. Later counts and final counts at harvest showed a considerable evening up, although the two-seed treatment proved unreliable, giving the lowest stand in both seasons.

Plant height and weight records, made during both seasons, showed that plants from the larger hills were drawn up much more rapidly than plants from the smaller hills. This rapid elongation in stem height proved, from weight figures, to be at the expense of lateral development, weak and leggy plants being produced in these hills. The ten-seed treatment showed up particularly badly in this respect, the yield figures showing that the plants never recovered from this early deleterious effect.

The six-seed treatment, whilst giving a quick and excellent stand suffered to a certain extent from the same defects as the ten-seed treatment. If thinned early they tended to fill out and become more comparable with plants from the three-seed treatment, but when thinning was delayed they never caught up and final yield suffered adversely.

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production on the Loess Plateau in China has been threatened by water scarcity and climate change during the last decade. Sustainable crop production in this region requires managerial practices that can provide high yield and high water productivity (WP). A 7-year (2001–2008) study at the Loess Plateau Research Station of Lanzhou University investigated the effects of various conservation tillage practices on grain yield, soil water content (SWC), WP and economic return of winter wheat production. Tillage treatments included: conventional tillage (T), conventional tillage followed by stubble retention (TS), no-till (NT) and no-till followed by stubble retention (NTS). Over the entire experimental period, grain yield and WP of winter wheat ranged from 1279 to 4894 kg/ha and 0·32 to 2·41 kg/m3, respectively. Both were significantly affected by tillage treatment and year, while SWC was only affected by year. Grain yield and WP in TS was increased by 4·9, 12·1, 0·9% and 13·7, 20·4 and 3·9% compared with NTS, NT and T, respectively, over seven growing seasons. Additionally, a multiple linear regression analysis indicated that grain yield is mainly limited by SWC during planting. Despite its lower grain yield, the NTS treatment increased economic benefit by US$ 328, US$ 23 and US$ 87/ha compared with TS, NT and T, respectively. Therefore, it is suggested that increasing soil water storage at wheat sowing time and encouraging the use of NTS could improve economic returns in this region.

Eight experiments, comprising four randomized-block feeding trials each with 20–45 animals and four changeover-design nitrogen (N) balance trials each with 6–10 animals, were used to study the effect of the addition of formaldehyde to fishmeal and to casein, of severe heating of fishmeal, and of tannin treatment of a mixture of vegetable protein-rich foods on the utilization of N for growth. Added in moderate amounts to rations demonstrated within the experiments to be deficient in N, quantities, but not the preparations, of N in the diet were critical to growth save at very low N intakes when the untreated foodstuffs were used more efficiently. Additional energy given in isonitrogenous rations increased growth, reducing N losses in the urine.

The extent of the reduction of maize (Zea mays L.) kernel moisture content through drying is closely related to field temperature (or accumulated temperature; AT) following maturation. In 2017 and 2018, we selected eight maize hybrids that are widely planted in Northeastern China to construct kernel drying prediction models for each hybrid based on kernel drying dynamics. In the traditional harvest scenario using the optimal sowing date (OSD), maize kernels underwent drying from 4th September to 5th October, with variation coefficients of 1.0–1.9. However, with a latest sowing date (LSD), drying occurred from 14th September to 31st October, with variation coefficients of 1.3–3.0. In the changed harvest scenario, the drying time of maize sown on the OSD condition was from 12th September to 9th November with variation coefficients of 1.3–3.0, while maize sown on the LSD had drying dates of 26th September to 28th October with variation coefficients of 1.5–3.6. In the future harvest scenario, the Fengken 139 (FK139) and Jingnongke 728 (JNK728) hybrids finished drying on 20th October and 8th November, respectively, when sown on the OSD and had variation coefficients of 2.7–2.8. Therefore, the maize kernel drying time was gradually delayed and was associated with an increased demand for AT ⩾ 0°C late in the growing season. Furthermore, we observed variation among different growing seasons likely due to differences in weather patterns, and that sowing dates impact variations in drying times to a greater extent than harvest scenarios.

Twenty alfalfa cultivars were tested, under rainfed conditions in central Greece, for forage yield, agronomic and nutritive value in order to identify adaptive responses contributing to high resilience and productivity. From 2014 to 2017, five harvests (H1 to H5) per season were conducted. Two cultivars were also grown as irrigated checks. Annual and total dry matter (DMA and DMT) and harvest ratios (RH) were estimated. DMT was reduced by 42.9–48.1% under ambient rainfall compared to irrigated checks, which received 50.2% more water. The seasonal yield distribution demonstrated two contrasting strategies, however, equally effective for high resilience under rainfed conditions. The winter-active imported cultivars were the most resilient in the driest year, potentially due to their ability to exploit autumn rains, whereas the locally adapted genotypes were more productive in summer. The spring harvest ratio (RH1) was more indicative (r = 0.94, P < 0.01) of cultivar productivity, compared to plant survival (r = 0.65, P < 0.01), whereas the autumn harvest ratio (RH5) was representative of productivity under extreme drought (r = 0.53, P < 0.05). RH1 and RH5 were increased by 11.8 and 12.3%, respectively, whereas the summer ratios (RH3, RH4) were reduced by 47.3%, under rainfed v. irrigated conditions. Two Australian cultivars (‘Blue Ace’, ‘Icon’) achieved the highest RH5 suggesting an adaptive response by being more productive in autumn. However, the development of specifically adapted cultivars in terms of higher summer yield and plant survival may be necessary to cope with future climatic changes in the Mediterranean region.

Evaluating the effects of crop successions in no-tillage system (NTS) is essential for the correct recommendation of agronomic practices, such as top-dressing nitrogen fertilization. The aim was to evaluate the effect of the crop succession and the splitting of top-dressing N fertilization on the agronomic performance and economic viability of common bean crop. The experiment was conducted in southeastern Brazil for two agricultural seasons in an area under NTS, using a split-plot in randomized complete block design. The plots represented three cropping successions (maize in sole crop, maize intercropped with Urochloa ruziziensis and U. ruziziensis in sole crop) and the subplots composed of ten combinations of splitting of top-dressing N, at the stages V3, V4 and R5 of the common bean crop. In relation to the single application of the N dose of 90 kg ha−1, the common bean had higher response as a function of the N splitting schemes adopted, regardless of the previous cropping succession. The cropping successions evaluated did not interfere with the seed yield of common bean as subsequent crop, even at the beginning of the establishment of NTS. To obtain higher seed yield and economic viability, the N dose of 90 kg ha−1 indicated for the crop must be split and applied among the phenological stages V3, V4 and R5.

A study has been made of some of the nitrogen fractions of the pegasse soils of British Guiana in virgin and exhausted conditions, that is, before and after cropping.

1. Preliminary field experiments on the virgin and exhausted soils adduced strong evidence in support of the complaints made by farmers that the productivity in yields of the pegasse soils after continuous cropping for a comparatively short period is considerably impaired.

2. The virgin soil showed an appreciable amount of nitrate nitrogen, while the exhausted sample indicated no nitrate. The latter soil, on the other hand, contained a higher amount of ammonia nitrogen measured by KCl extraction than the former soil.

3. Nitrification studies with added ammonium salts indicated that under optimum conditions the nitrifying power of the exhausted soil was extremely low. Additions of sodium nitrate indicated that the nitrate was partially reduced to ammonia by the worn-out pegasse soil. The virgin pegasse, on the other hand, showed an appreciable rate of nitrification.

The requirement for inorganic fertilizer nitrogen (N) by winter wheat crops in the United Kingdom is derived using the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Fertilizer Manual. In the experimental programme described and discussed in the present paper, the appropriateness of these recommendations for winter wheat grown in Northern Ireland is examined.

Yield response to N varied in experiments conducted on two winter wheat cultivars (cvars) in Northern Ireland from 2007 to 2009. Consequently the optimum N rate (Nopt, defined as the rate of applied N where the value of the increase in yield equals the cost of the increment in fertilizer applied and beyond which additional N would not repay its cost) also varied from year to year. The band of fertilizer N rates over which margins were reduced by £20 (GBP) and £50 also varied from year to year. Changes in the N:grain price ratio affected Nopt to differing extents in the three experiments depending on the shape of the yield v. N response.

Nopt should therefore be considered as a range of N rates because (1) it varies from year to year and probably also field to field and (2) the margin of income from grain over cost of fertilizer varies little over a range of N rates because of the shape of the asymptotic response of yield to N. Alternatively, in high rainfall areas (annual rainfall >700 mm) of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, where Table C of the Fertilizer Manual (formerly RB 209) is used to determine soil nitrogen supply (SNS) index, a single N rate could be adopted at SNS indices of 2 or less (equating to soil N supplies of 100 kg/ha or less). A rate of 240 kg N/ha could be adopted based on the over-years function fitted to all results in the three experiments reported in the present paper and including treatments that vary in the splitting of N applied between the two applications and in their timing.

Grain N concentration rarely exceeded the guideline 19 mg/g for feed wheat crops identified in the Fertilizer Manual (Anon. 2010). Overall, N taken up by the crops was used efficiently, and particularly so at lower N rates. However, at low fertilizer N rates the contribution from ‘free’ soil N inflates the ‘apparent’ value of grain yield produced. The responses of yield and grain N concentration to N show that crop processes work to maximize yield at the expense of N concentration in the grain. Therefore there is less need to be concerned about identifying the optimum N rate and predicting fertilizer N requirement with a high degree of precision. Instead growers could assess and adjust the efficiency of their N use based on grain N concentration generally, rather than specifically assess whether their fertilizer N applications were close to Nopt. Essentially as grain N concentration increases, yield/kg of applied fertilizer N decreases. Thus at low grain N concentrations, yield could be increased by increasing N applications and at high grain N concentrations yield could be maintained and profitability increased by reducing N applications.

The effect of cowpea green manure (CGM) and farmyard manure (FYM) on phenological events in maize grown with different rates of nitrogen (N) was evaluated at Ludhiana, India in 1988–89 as part of a long-term experiment on sandy loam. Tasselling (T), anthesis (A), silking (S), maturity (M) and appearance of leaves were recorded in 1988 and 1989 from plots of maize manured with cowpea and FYM and grown at 0, 75 and 125 kg N/ha. Time to phenological events was calculated in terms of calendar days and growing degree units (GDU).

Phenological events in maize were significantly advanced by CGM, FYM and N. The occurrence of T, A and S with CGM was earlier by 60·5, 84·5 and 114·5 GDU, respectively, than without it and the end of each of the growth stages T, A and S was advanced by 81·0, 99·0 and 78·5 GDU, respectively. Maturity was earlier than in the control by 65·0 GDU. Leaf emergence occurred earlier after organic manuring. Farmyard manure advanced development less than CGM. Changes in phenological events due to N followed the same pattern of changes as those found with organic manures. Time from sowing to onset of T, A, S and M, and the interval between T, A, S and M were significantly correlated with yield and yield-related characters. Desirable changes in the timing of phenological events are thus one of the factors contributing to the improvement in productivity caused by organic manures. Calendar day was found to be as accurate an index as GDU for evaluation of the effect of cultural practices on phenological events.

1. An account has been given of the composition and weights of nutrients and sugars in sixty-four sugar beet plants from just before singling until maturity. The assimilation, translocation and distribution of these have been discussed.

2. At about singling, the leaves contained 90 per cent. of the dry matter and 76 per cent. of the sugars of the plant, whereas, at maturity, the figures were 28 and 3 per cent. respectively.

3. The percentage of reducing sugars in the dry substance of the complete plant maintained a steady level throughout, as was also the case with cane sugar in the leaves. The highest percentages of sugars in the dry matter of both leaves and roots were attained by early August. Evidence is produced to show that, although in the plant as a whole carbon assimilation proceeded more quickly than the intake of soil nutrients, until early July the rate of translocation of carbon to the roots did not equal the rate of intake of soil nutrients by the latter.

The objective of this study was to develop an experimental model to measure both fractional and absolute rates of protein synthesis in the small intestine of lambs. Six male castrate lambs (∼6 months old, mean liveweight 26 kg) were offered, via continuous feeders, 900 g/day lucerne chaff. They were prepared with catheters in the cranial mesenteric vein (CMV), femoral artery (FA), jugular vein and abomasum, and a blood flow probe around the CMV. Cr-EDTA (0·139 mg Cr/ml, ∼0·2 ml/min) was infused abomasally for 24 h and L-[2,6-3H]phenylalanine (Phe) (441±33·8 μCi into the abomasum) and L-[U-14C]phenylalanine (43·9±4·08 μCi into the jugular) were also infused during the last 8 h. Blood from the CMV and FA was sampled during isotope infusions. At the end of infusions, lambs were killed and tissue and digesta samples removed from four sites along the small intestine (SI). Transfers of labelled and unlabelled Phe were measured between SI tissue, its lumen and blood, enabling both fractional and absolute rates of protein synthesis and gain to be estimated. The total SI protein pool was 84 (±1·7) g and fractional gain rate was 7·5 (±5·5)% per day. Mean protein synthesis and fractional synthesis rates (FSR) were calculated from the mean retention of 14C and 3H in SI tissue. FSR tended to increase caudally along the SI (although P > 0·05). The choice of free Phe pool for estimating precursor specific radioactivity (SRA) for protein synthesis had a significant effect on FSR. Assuming that tissue free Phe SRA represented precursor SRA gave a mean FSR of 129 (±24)% per day. Corresponding estimates for free Phe SRA in the FA and CMV were 20 (±1·8) and 30 (±3·1)% per day respectively. The correct value for protein synthesis was therefore in doubt, although indirect evidence suggested that blood SRA (either FA or CMV) may be closest to true precursor SRA. This evidence included (i) comparison with flooding dose estimates of FSR, (ii) comparison of 3H[ratio ]14C Phe SRA in free Phe pools with this ratio in SI protein, and (iii) the proportion of SI energy use associated with protein synthesis. Advantages of the present experimental model compared to other methods included (i) measurements of both protein synthesis and gain, and hence, all components of turnover, (ii) measurement of absolute as well as fractional rates of synthesis and gain, (iii) inclusion of proteins which are synthesised and exported, and (iv) concurrent measurement of protein synthesis and energy utilization by the small intestine.

Seven high-oil sunflower eultivars were grown in 1976 and 1977 at selected locations in Ghana, to evaluate the potential of sunflowers as an oil-seed crop for the lowland tropics. All eultivars flowered and matured earlier than observed under temperate conditions. Yields were between 75 and 1600 kg/ha at 9% moisture content. Oil contents ranged from 41 to 47% with a higher proportion of oleic acid (about 54%) than linoleic (about 38%). It is concluded that sunflower production is feasible and could become as important as that of existing annual oil seeds.

1. Fifteen male Merino lambs suckling the ewe and four adult Merino wethers were fed the same pelletted diet. The lambs had free access to milk from the ewe and were creep-fed the pelletted diet. Feed intake by each lamb was measured daily.

2. The digestibility of the dry matter of the pelletted diet was determined in a conventional total collection trial with the adult wethers. Dry-matter and crude-protein digestibility "was determined in the lambs on faeces taken at, or just before, slaughter by the lignin-ratio method.

The effect of season of harvest and previous seasonal applications of fertilizer N on the response of perennial ryegrass/white clover swards to pre-cut applications of fertilizer N was studied in three consecutive years on different sites. Herbage D.M. yield responded in a curvilinear manner to increased pre-cut N application rates. There was a tendency in all experiments for the marginal response of herbage D.M. to increased pre-cut N application rates to decrease as previous seasonal fertilizer N application rates increased. Although the effect of season of harvest on the response of herbage D.M. to pre-cut N application rates varied with site/years, it was concluded that the marginal response of herbage D.M. to pre-cut N application rate varies little throughout the greater part of the growing season. The exceptions to this are the very early and late harvests and swards that receive low supplies of N from the sward/soil complex. The results are discussed in relation to other published data and to their possible use in the control of the seasonal pattern and total seasonal supply of herbage D.M. for rotational grazing management systems.

During 1947–9, field and pot experiments have been carried out first to assess the herbicidal properties of 2:4-dinitro-6-secondary-butyl-phenol, and secondly to determine its value for selective weed control in leguminous crops. In order to obtain precise estimates of the concentration required to produce a given percentage mortality of either weed or crops species, such experiments were so designed that the results are capable of probit analysis.

From the data of field experiments on thirteen species of annual weeds, it is evident that there are wide variations in the concentration required to produce a standard kill. Irrespective of the species, susceptibility is greatest in the young seedling stage and there is a rapid increase in resistance with age. For example, with Raphanus raphanistrum between the cotyledon and pre-flowering stage a sixfold increase in concentration is needed to give a 90% mortality.

Carcass measurements have been used by various authors to predict total edible meat content of carcasses.

Measurements were made on 180 commercial quality cattle of different phenotypes and sexes in a commercial slaughterhouse in Monterrey, N.L. Measurements were carcass weight, length, forequarter depth, side circumference, length of leg, length of forearm, leg shape, area of m.l.d. and total dissected meat. Multiple regressions were computed for both linear and allometric equations using a CDC 3300 computer.

It was found that in both forms of the equation carcass weight accounted for the majority of the total variance (97·0% and 96·8% for the linear and the allometric forms respectively). Various measurements of forequarter depth improved the goodness of fit only slightly as did circumference of side and length of forearm.

Seven field experiments were made on the effect of two harvesting dates on the nitrogen requirements of sugar beet. All were on Rauceby series soils overlying oolitic limestone in Lincolnshire.

Nitrogen fertilizer increased sugar yield in all experiments, and yield was considerably higher at the mid-December harvest than in early October. On average, the sugar-yield response to nitrogen was greater at the late harvest, and the requirement for nitrogen was about 45 kg/ha higher then than at the early harvest. Sugar content was depressed less at the late harvest than at the early by increasing nitrogen rate.

These results suggest that farmers should apply more nitrogen to fields that they plan to harvest late than to early-harvested fields; they also have implications for the conduct and interpretation of nitrogen response experiments on sugar beet.

(1) The maintenance requirement of Light Sussex cockerels has been found by a feeding trial and comparative slaughter method. The maintenance requirement found was 22.1 calories per sq. m. of surface per hour. The net energy of the ration fed (Sussex ground oats: whole dried milk = 13 : 3) was 1.8 calories per gm.

(2) A new method of determining the surface area of birds is described.

(3) The value of K in the equation area = K has been found by this method to be 9.3.

The responses of Stylosanthes guyanensis (Stylo) to frequency and height of cutting and the effects of feeding increasing amounts of stylo meal on egg production, yolk vitamin A, yolk colour and percentage hatchability were studied. In the agronomic study, the higher the cutting height, the higher the total yield of dry matter, yield of crude protein, yield of carotene, percentage of crude fibre and the lower the carotene and crude-protein content. A highly significant correlation between the carotene content and crude-protein content (r = +0·91) was obtained.

The addition of stylo meal as more than 10% of the feed significantly (P < 0·01) depressed egg production. On the other hand, yolk colour, yolk vitamin A status and percentage hatchability were significantly improved with the feeding of stylo meal.
