1 Indonesia withdrew from the UN effective March 1, 1965 (Documents A/5857 and Corr.1 and S/6157). On March 15, 1965, the Security Council at its 1190th meeting unanimously recommended to the General Assembly the admission of Gambia to the UN.

2 On September 16, 1963, Sabah (North Borneo) and Sarawak joined with the Federation of Malaya (which had become a UN Member on September 17, 1957) to form Malaysia.

3 Egypt and Syria both became Members of the UN on October 24, 1945. Following a plebiscite held on February 21, 1958, Egypt and Syria joined in establishing the United Arab Republic which continued as a single Member of the UN. On October 13, 1961, Syria, having resumed its status as an independent state, also resumed its separate membership in the UN, and the United Arab Republic continued as a Member of the UN.

4 Tanganyika became a Member on December 14, 1961, and Zanzibar on December 16, 1963. Following the ratification of articles of union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar on April 26, 1964, the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar continued as a single Member of the UN, later changing its name to the United Republic of Tanzania.

5 In accordance with previous precedent, Jordan was elected to the Council for the year 1965 by the General Assembly during its 1314th plenary meeting on December 30, 1964, on the understanding that Mali would occupy the seat in 1966 and that if the Security Council was enlarged during 1965, both Jordan and Mali would occupy seats in the Security Council for the full term of two years.

6 As agreed upon by the Assembly during its 1254th plenary meeting on November 1, 1963, Malaysia would occupy the seat during 1965 which Czechoslovakia held during 1964.
