The European Community is the collective title of the three supra-national institutions—the European Coal and Steel Community, the Common Market, and Euratom—set up by Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Luxembourg (the Six). Each of the three institutions is separate and has its own executive, whose task is to ensure proper functioning and development. Ultimate authority is exercised by the Council of Ministers of each.
