During surveys conducted in 40 maize-cassava intercrops in the humid forest zone of southwestern Nigeria, the following termite species were identified from soil samples: Microtermes spp., Macrotermes nigeriensis (Sjöstedt), Macrotermes subhyalinus (Rambur), Amitermes evuncifer (Silvestri) and Anoplotermes quietus (Fr. Muller). High incidence of Microtermes and Macrotermes spp. was observed. The population density of predominant species was generally higher in the rainy seasons than in the dry seasons, indicating the role of moisture in their spread. The soil texture of surveyed farms did not influence the presence of the subterranean species Microtermes. The level of weeds in the surveyed farms also did not affect the population density of termites. However, Microtermes population increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increase in crop residues and its presence in farms partly depended on the presence of maize in such farms. Microtermes and Macrotermes species inflicted most of the damage observed on maize crops, while that caused by Amitermes evuncifer was low. No termite attack was observed on growing cassava during the surveys. The presence of live cassava in the intercrop did not influence damage by termites. Nasutitermes and Microcerotermes species which attack economic trees such as cocoa, citrus, oil palm, and forest trees did not attack cassava or maize.

One hundred and five okra cultivars were evaluated in the field for resistance to the leafhopper Amrasca biguttula biguttula (Ishida) during the 1989–1990 season. On the basis of nymphal abundance and leafhopper injury index two resistant (Siswal Local and IC 7194) and nine moderately resistant [IC 6653, IC 8899, IC 13617, Sel. 1, HB 94, IC 6316,6 Dhari, Sel. 2–2 and Line 6(1)] genotypes were identified. Both of the resistant, two moderately resistant (Line 6(1) and IC 13617) and two highly susceptible (Pusa Sawani and Pusa Reshmi) genotypes were retested in 1990–1991. Resistant genotypes had significanlty (P < 0.05) fewer nymphs (18.5 to 22.0 nymphs/leaf) and lower values of injury index (2.2) compared with the other varieties. Nymphal duration was also longer (9.3 to 9.8 days) and nymphal survival lower (41.7 to 47.5%) in resistant cultivars. Higher trichome density, longer trichome length and higher concentration of sugars, silica, potassium, tannins and phenols in the leaves of resistant cultivars were associated with resistance to leafhopper.

Studies were conducted from 1993–1995 at Samanko, Mali, on rearing and pheromone trapping of Busseola fusca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and on the insecticidal effect of extracts of Jatropha curcas (Euphorbiaceae) on B. fusca and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). A technique for mass rearingof B.fusca larvae on a chickpea and sorghum leaf-based meridic diet was developed, requiring about 10 g of diet per larva. An average of 7.3 successive generations were obtained per year. Pupal and larval mortalities were less than 15%. Oviposition was obtained on artificial substrates, with a fecundity of 300–500 eggs per female. Laboratory tests were conducted with diets in which extracts of nuts of J. curcas had been added. A 100% larvicidal effect was obtained with B. fusca and S. calamistis at 0.01% and 1% crude oil concentration respectively, and with 0.025% of the phorbol ester fraction on S. cahmistis. Trapping experiments using traps made of aluminum trays baited with synthetic pheromone showed that B. fusca male moths flights could be satisfactorily monitored. An improvement of traps and/or pheromone effectiveness is, however, necessary before their use as a control method.

The stemborers Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), are the most important pests of maize and grain sorghum in South Africa. Parasitoids, pathogens and predators curtailed populations of B. fusca and C. partellus on the crops but their activity was not enough to reduce pest populations to below-economic-damage levels. They also could not prevent the dispersal and subsequent widespread distribution of C. partellus after its introduction into South Africa. Nine parasitoids and hyperparasitoids have been recorded attacking both borer species. These parasitoids are probably more habitat-specific with regard to foraging for hosts than they are host-specific, as they appear to have moved from their indigenous hosts to use C. partellus as a new alternative host. Between 1977 and 1993 three braconids, one eulophid, three ichneumonids, two trichogrammatids and four tachinids were introduced into South Africa from 11 countries for biological control of stemborers. Recoveries of parasitoids were made only short periods after releases and in the vicinity of the release sites. Cold and dry winters, with night temperatures often falling to below freezing, prevail in the Highveld Region which is the major summer-grain-producing area of South Africa. These conditions, and the fact that borers enter diapause in the dry stalks for 7 months in winter, when the crops or other alternative host plants such as grasses do not grow, hamper the establishment of exotic natural enemies in the Highveld Region.

Studies were conducted using a water-based trap baited with the synthetic female sex pheromone to gain further understanding on the effect of trap height and spacing in relation to crop height on catches of males of the millet stemborer, Coniesta ignefusalis (Hampson) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Regardless of crop height, catches were greatest at trap heights of 0.10 and 0.50 m when the traps were stacked vertically. When traps were sited singly at 50 m spacing there was no significant difference in catches at the different heights. When trap spacing was varied from 50,15, 5,1 to 0 m, male moth catches in traps increased at lower trap heights, regardless of crop height. Comparison of catches in light traps and pheromone-baited traps showed a significant positive correlation. These findings have implications for both monitoring and development of millet stemborer control systems through mating disruption and mass trapping.

The progress of the South African Sugar Association Experiment Station's 15-year-old biological control programme against Eldana saccharina Walker is reviewed. Two approaches at controlling this borer, a ‘new association’ and a ‘modified’ classical biological approach are summarised. Constraints identified as limiting the successful establishment of 10 egg, 12 larval and 2 pupal ‘new association’ parasitoids include host incompatibility, climatic incompatibility, poor ecological and biological life history knowledge, incorrect parasitoid searching ability and hyperparasitic tendencies. The 3 egg and 7 larval ‘modified’ classical biocontrol parasitoids which could be reared in the laboratory had constraints such as parasitising ability, different host habitat, differing host behaviours in different habitats and initial host identification difficulties to overcome. Difficulties encountered in this biological control programme against an indigenous pest insect show that biological control is not easy. Knowledge of constraints identified during this programme will hopefully be of use to others embarking on similar projects.

Combining ability of resistance to the sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata and spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus in grain sorghum was analysed on a seven-parents diallel in a field trial at the ICIPE Mbita Point Field Station, western Kenya during the 1990 long rainy season. Lines with best performance for each of the four measured resistance parameters were also found to be the best general combiners. Resistance to leaf damage and number of holes/metre were controlled by additive gene effects whereas resistance to deadheart and stem tunnelling were controlled by additive and non-additive gene effects. Parents IS-1044, IS-12308 and IS-2269 with their good level of resistance, and desirable general combining ability (GCA) effects are proposed for utilisation as resistant combiners in breeding programmes for shootfly and stemborer resistance in grain sorghum.

Chilo partellus Swinhoe (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is an exotic stemborer of cereal crops in Africa which invaded the continent from Asia earlier this century. In addition to Ch. partellus, several indigenous stemborers are found in Africa. In 1991, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a gregarious endoparasitoid of stemborers in Asia, was introduced into Kenya for biological control of Ch. partellus. Laboratory studies revealed that the parasitoid could successfully parasitise not only the target stemborer, but also two native stemborers that occur sympatrically with Ch. partellus in some locations. Interbreeding studies demonstrated the Co. flavipes would mate with a native congener, Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron), but no female offspring resulted from these matings. Investigations on competition between the two Cotesia spp. indicated that when Ch. partellus was the host, Co. flavipes appeared to be a superior parasitoid. Releases of Co. flavipes were made in 1993 in Kenya. Recoveries in 1994,1995 and 1996 demonstrated that the parasitoid was firmly established in two regions of Kenya and in northern Tanzania. Preliminary observations suggest that the parasitoid is causing greater mortality to stemborers in southwestern Kenya than in the coastal area.

The functional response in terms of prey consumption and numerical response in terms of number of eggs laid by individual female adult predators of Coccinella transversalis Fab. and Cheilomenes (Menochilus) sexmaculatus Fab. (Coccnellidae: Coleoptera) at varied prey (Aphis gossypii Glover) (Aphididae: Homoptera) densities were investigated under laboratory conditions. The feeding rate by individual predators increased at increased prey densities, with both the coccinellids showing the Type II functional response. One hundred percent prey consumption was observed up to an initial prey density of 50 and 20 for Co. transversalis and Ch: sexmaculatus respectively. The fecundity of Co. transversalis increased at higher prey densities, but that of Ch. sexmaculatus remained unchanged.

A study on the digestive carbohydrates complex was carried out in adult Zonocerus variegatus (Orthoptera: Pyrgomorphidae) to determine the status of the cyanogenetic glucose ingested by the grasshopper feeding on cassava. Two groups of adult Zonocerus were used. One group had been starved for 48 hours immediately prior to the experiment while the other had been fed continuously. After dissection, 10 to 15 portions of intestinal tracts (i.e. foreguts, caeca, midguts, hindguts) and 20 to 30 salivary glands were respectively crushed, centrifuged and dialysed for 24 hours in distilled water. The distillates obtained from different parts of the digestive system were used for determining the osidasic activities. Twenty-three substrates; i.e. 5 oligosaccharides, 10 synthetic heterosides and 8 soluble polysaccharides were selected for measuring the activities of the enzymes. Results showed that Z. variegatus has a wide range of enzymes whose activities differ according to different portions of the gut. The mid- and hind guts are the most active parts of the digestive tract but amylase activity was higher in the salivary glands. The Zonocerus variegatus osidase complex is characterised by the following proprieties: (a) high oligosaccharides activities on α-glucopyrones (maltose, saccharose) and on β-glucopyrones (cellobiose); (b)varied heteroside activities with α-glucosides and linamarase very active; (c) amylase activity very high, and hemicellulase and cellulase activities very low. In Zonocerus, starvation increases maltose hydrolyse but it does not affect other oligosaccharide activities. On the other hand, starvation reduces most of carbohydrases activities. The origin and consequences of the linamarase activity in the insect gut are also discussed.

The total number of eggs laid by Callosobruchus rhodesianus (Pic.) and Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) females in the presence of single and mixed species populations of males at different densities were counted. Increasing male density significantly reduced the realised fecundity of C. maculatus but not C. rhodesianus females. In the presence of C. maculatus males, however, the number of eggs laid by C. rhodesianus was greatly reduced. The reduction in egg laying and observations on mating behaviour indicates direct physical interference between weevils and competition for mates. An adequate number of beans were provided so competition for oviposition sites by females was unlikely. The ability of C. maculatus to inhibit oviposition of C. rhodesianus is suggested as one reason for its superiority over the latter when the two species compete for limited resources.

The palaeotropical, gregarious, endoparasitic braconids Cotesia sesamiae, Cotesia flavipes and Cotesia chilonis were recently imported into Benin as candidates for biological control of stem and cob borers of maize. Host acceptability and host suitability of six gramineous borers occurring in western Africa, namely the noctuids Sesamia calamistis, Sesamia poephaga, Busseola fusca and the pyralids Coniesta ignefusalis, Eldana saccharina andMussidia nigrivenella, to these candidate parasitoids was evaluated in order to gain insight into the physiological suitability of the natural and factitious hosts. All hosts were accepted by all Cotesia spp., except M. nigrivenella which was not attacked by Co. chilonis. Parasitoid progeny development was successful in S. calamistis, S. poephaga and Con. ignefusalis. Sesamia calamistis was the most suitable host for Cotesia spp. development, in terms of duration of developmental time, brood size and mortality of parasitoid progeny.

The temperature, pH, moisture, carbon and nitrogen contents of soils at oviposition sites of Zonocerus variegatus (L.) (Orthoptera: Pyrgomorphidae) located around cassava farms at Aiyepe, southwestern Nigeria, were compared with those of soils at non-oviposition sites (control) during different months. Although oviposition site soils did not differ in particle composition from control soils, their temperatures were, generally, significantly lower. Soils at oviposition sites lost significantly less organic carbon to oxidation and nitrogen to leaching. They also contained significantly more moisture than soils at control sites during February-April when oviposition occurred and newly deposited eggs, lacking the serosal cuticle, would be prone to desiccation in dry soils. Conditions at oviposition sites are a key factor in the selection of egg deposition by gravid Z. variegatus.

Difficulties of identification of natural enemies of cereal stemborers for ‘redistribution’ in Africa are discussed. Tritrophic level studies on wild and cultivated habitats of borers and beneficial species are needed to judge the impact of a natural enemy species in the cropping system. Areas with low pest pressure which are climatically favorable for pest development may be selected for study. Based on the results of various countrywide surveys to map the relative importance of Sesamia calamistis Hampson, Eldana saccharina (Walker) and Busseola frisca (Fuller) in western Africa, recommendations are given for sites for tritrophic level studies. It is hypothesised that because maize is not always present in the field and because of its high susceptibility, natural biological control has to come from wild habitats. This emphasises the importance of the knowledge on the wild host-plant range. Survey results complemented with oviposition and life-table studies in the laboratory showed that, rather than being reservoirs for pests, most wild grass species act as trap plants causing mortalities of 100%. A comparison of light trap catches with pupae found on wild hosts and the scarcity of known wild hosts in areas with high pest pressure suggest gaps in our knowledge of the range of host plant species. Based on comparison of known natural enemy complexes in East and West Africa, the scelionid egg parasitoid Telenomus isis and an East African strain of the braconid larval parasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) are proposed for redistribution against B. fusca and S. calamistis, respectively. Telenomus isis has never been reported from East Africa whereas G sesamiae is common in East and southern Africa and scarce in western Africa, suggesting that G sesamiae is probably not adapted to S. calamistis and B. fusca in this region.

At Alemaya in eastern Ethiopia, tef (Eragrostis tef) was found to be attacked by a complex of seven shootfly species, five species belonging to the family Chloropidae and two to Muscidae. Atherigona hyalinipennis (Diptera: Muscidae) was economically the most important species in the shootfly complex of the crop. It caused 42–58% damage to growing panicles in different varieties of tef, which resulted in an estimated loss of 378–522 kg/ha. The average incubation period of eggs, developmental periods of larvae and pupae of A. hyalinipennis were 3.0, 12.7 and 9.6 days respectively, and the total life cycle was completed in less than a month in the laboratory. Larval parasitism by Neotrichoporoides nyemitawus ranged from 6.7 to 18.5%. Peak activity of A. hyalinipennis in the region was in August to September.

In quantitative feeding experiments, larvae of Grammodes stolida (Fab) consumed significantly more of mature leaves than young and senescent leaves of Lannea coromandelica (Houtt). The maximum leaf consumption was by the third instar. The amount of food consumed by the penultimate and final instars comprised 72.6% of the total larval consumption. Food utilisation indices, namely approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), and efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) showed a significant decrease during the second larval stage. The bionomics of the moth were studied in relation to its survivability and reproductive potential on Lannea coromandelica which appears to be a potential host which the pest could colonise during periods of non-availability of other crop hosts.

Intraspecific competition in the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and the angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) in grain sorghum was studied in laboratory experiments. Progeny production per female of each of the two species when reared separately, decreased as the initial parent population density increased. The number of progeny produced by Sitophilus oryzae increased to a peak, and then declined sharply with a further increase in initial parent population density, characteristic of a scramble competition. In contrast, the progeny produced by Sitotroga cerealella increased with an increase in parental density to reach a fairly constant maximum (flat topped curve), characteristic of a contest competition. It is concluded that intraspecific competition will not limit the potential of the grain moth S. cerealella of becoming a major pest of stored sorghum.

The effect of hexaflumuron, a chitin synthesis inhibitor, on the mating success of three species of vector mosquitoes, namely Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi, was investigated. The three species were exposed to concentrations giving 5% and 50% inhibition of emergence (EI5 and EI50, respectively) at the fourth instar and to 0.005 and 0.05 mg/1 hexaflumuron at the pupal stage. Emergent adults were allowed to mate with each other and with their untreated counterparts. Reduction in mating (evaluated as % insemination) was highest in Ae. aegypti exposed at the larval stage. Mosquitoes exposed at the pupal stage to 0.05 mg/1 hexaflumuron showed higher reduction in mating than those exposed to 0.005 mg/1. The effect of hexaflumuron appeared to be cumulative, resulting in a 78–80% reduction in % insemination when treated males were mated with treated females, compared with untreated males mated with untreated females.

Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a braconid larval parasitoid that has been used in the biological control of tropical stemborers in gramineous plants. The current research status on the behavioural ecology of this parasitoid is reviewed. The stimuli involved in the location of the host-microhabitat and the behaviour on infested plants and inside stemborer tunnels are discussed. Several aspects of the host foraging behaviour on C. flavipes are discussed in relation to the ecology of the parasitoid, such as the role of learning in foraging and clutch size allocation decisions. Variation in behaviour can be an obstacle in the effective use of natural enemies in biological control. Behavioural variation may exist because individuals differ genetically in their propensity to find or accept different hosts. Individuals may also differ because they have experienced different environments (i.e. learning). The second part of this paper focuses on the intraspecific variability in G flavipes behaviour and discusses to what extent the reported plant and host specificity in C. flavipes has a genetic basis or is due to phenotypic plasticity through learning.

The searching behaviour of two coccinellid predators, Coccinella transversalis Fab. and Cheilomenes (Menochilus) sexmaculatus Fab. at different hunger levels and larval stage was studied on eggplant infested with Aphis gossypii Glov. Females of both predators required more prey to return to a state of complete satiation. As the period of starvation increased, more aphids were consumed by both the beetles, reaching a maximum at 24 h starvation. In first, second, third and fourth instars of both the predators, the searching time and the number of eggplant leaf veins visited increased with increasing hunger levels. A high positive correlation between searching time and hunger level of tested predators was obtained.
