Let 2 be the space of the holomorphic foliations on ℂℙ2 of degree 2. In this paper we study the linear action PGL(3, ℂ) × 2 → 2 given by gX = DgX ^(g−1) in the sense of the Geometric Invariant Theory. We obtain a characterisation of unstable and stable foliations according to properties of singular points and existence of invariant lines. We also prove that if X is an unstable foliation of degree 2, then X is transversal with respect to a rational fibration. Finally we prove that the geometric quotient of non-degenerate foliations without invariant lines is the moduli space of polarised del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2.

In this paper, we study a homotopy invariant cat(X, B, [ω]) on a pair (X, B) of finite CW complexes with respect to the cohomology class of a continuous closed 1-form ω. This is a generalisation of a Lusternik–Schnirelmann-category-type cat(X, [ω]), developed by Farber in [3, 4], studying the topology of a closed 1-form. This paper establishes the connection with the original notion cat(X, [ω]) and obtains analogous results on critical points and homoclinic cycles. We also provide a similar ‘cuplength’ lower bound for cat(X, B, [ω]).

We obtain sharp upper and lower bounds on a certain four-dimensional Frobenius number determined by a prime pair (p, q), 2 < p < q, including exact formulae for two infinite subclasses of such pairs. Our work is motivated by the study of compact Riemann surfaces which can be realised as semi-regular pq-fold coverings of surfaces of lower genus. In this context, the Frobenius number is (up to an additive translation) the largest genus in which no surface is such a covering. In many cases it is also the largest genus in which no surface admits an automorphism of order pq. The general t-dimensional Frobenius problem (t ≥ 3) is NP-hard, and it may be that our restricted problem retains this property.

We deduce maximum principles for fourth-, sixth- and eighth-order elliptic equations by modifying an auxiliary function introduced by Payne (J. Analyse Math. 30 (1976), 421–433). Integral bounds on various gradients of the solutions of these equations are obtained.

Let L be a convex body in n and z an interior point of L. We associate with L and z a new, convex and centrally symmetric, body CI(L, z). This generalizes the classical intersection bodyI(L, z) (whose radial function at u ∈ Sn−1 is the volume of the hyperplane section of L through z, orthogonal to u). CI(L, z) coincides with I(L, z) if and only if L is centrally symmetric about z. We study the properties of CI(L, z).

For a bounded domain Ω in a complete Riemannian manifold M, we investigate the Dirichlet weighted eigenvalue problem of quadratic polynomial operator Δ2 − aΔ + b of the Laplacian Δ, where a and b are the nonnegative constants. We obtain an inequality for eigenvalues which contains a constant that only depends on the mean curvature of M. It yields an upper bound of the (k + 1)th eigenvalue Λk + 1. As their applications, some inequalities and bounds of eigenvalues on a complete minimal submanifold in a Euclidean space and a unit sphere are obtained.

In our previous work, we established the theory of multi-variable Witten zeta-functions, which are called the zeta-functions of root systems. We have already considered the cases of types A2, A3, B2, B3 and C3. In this paper, we consider the case of G2-type. We define certain analogues of Bernoulli polynomials of G2-type and study the generating functions of them to determine the coefficients of Witten's volume formulas of G2-type. Next, we consider the meromorphic continuation of the zeta-function of G2-type and determine its possible singularities. Finally, by using our previous method, we give explicit functional relations for them which include Witten's volume formulas.

Let G be a compact metrizable abelian group, and let X be a Banach space. We characterize convolution operators associated with a regular Borel X-valued measure of bounded semivariation that are compact (resp; weakly compact) from L1(G), the space of integrable functions on G into L1(G) X, the injective tensor product of L1(G) and X. Along the way we prove a Fourier Convergence theorem for vector measures of relatively compact range that are absolutely continuous with respect to the Haar measure.

Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field F, and let Σ be a finite set of finite places of F. Let L(s, E, ψ) be the L-function of E twisted by a finite-order Hecke character ψ of F. It is conjectured that L(s, E, ψ) has a meromorphic continuation to the entire complex plane and satisfies a functional equation s ↔ 2 − s. Then one can define the so called minimal order of vanishing ats = 1 of L(s, E, ψ), denoted by m(E, ψ) (see Section 2 for the definition).

In this paper, by using the fixed point index method first we obtain some existence and multiplicity results for sign-changing solutions of an (e1, B)-limit increasing operator equation. The main results can be applied to many non-linear boundary value problems to obtain the existence and multiplicity results for sign-changing solutions. We also give a clear description of locations of these sign-changing solutions through strict lower and upper solutions. As an example, in the last section we obtain some existence and multiplicity results for sign-changing solutions of some Sturm–Liouville differential boundary value problems.

Assuming that (Ω, Σ) is a measurable space and (X) is a Banach space we provide a quite general sufficient condition on (X) for bvca(Σ, X) (the Banach space of all X-valued countably additive measures of bounded variation equipped with the variation norm) to contain a copy of c0 if and only if X does. Some well-known results on this topic are straightforward consequences of our main theorem.

In this paper we prove the existence of closed geodesics in the leaf space of some classes of singular Riemannian foliations (s.r.f.), namely s.r.fs. that admit sections or have no horizontal conjugate points. We also investigate the shortening process with respect to Riemannian foliations.

This paper deals with some non-linear initial-boundary value problems under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in which the solutions may blow up in finite time. Using a first-order differential inequality technique, lower bounds for blow-up time are determined.

We characterize real hypersurfaces of type (A) and ruled real hypersurfaces in a complex projective space in terms of two φ-invariances of their shape operators, and give geometric meanings of these real hypersurfaces by observing their some geodesics.

Let H ≤ K be subgroups of a group G. We say that H is strongly closed in K with respect to G if whenever ag ∈ K, where a ∈ H, g ∈ G, then ag ∈ H. In this paper, we investigate the structure of a group G under the assumption that every subgroup of order 2m (and 4 if m = 1) of a 2-Sylow subgroup S of G is strongly closed in S with respect to G. Some results related to 2-nilpotence and supersolvability of a group G are obtained. This is a complement to Guo and Wei (J. Group Theory13(2) (2010), 267–276).

In this article we prove Tate conjecture for a large class of compact quaternionic Shimura fourfolds.

In this paper we study non-complemented spaces of operators and the embeddability of ℓ∞ in the spaces of operators L(X, Y), K(X, Y) and Kw*(X*, Y). Results of Bator and Lewis [2, 3] (Bull. Pol. Acad. Sci. Math.50(4) (2002), 413–416; Bull. Pol. Acad. Sci. Math.549(1) (2006), 63–73), Emmanuele [8–10] (J. Funct. Anal.99 (1991), 125–130; Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc.111 (1992), 331–335; Atti. Sem. Mat. Fis. Univ. Modena42(1) (1994), 123–133), Feder [11] (Canad. Math. Bull.25 (1982), 78–81) and Kalton [16] (Math. Ann.208 (1974), 267–278), are generalised. A vector measure result is used to study the complementation of the spaces W(X, Y) and K(X, Y) in the space L(X, Y), as well as the complementation of K(X, Y) in W(X, Y). A fundamental result of Drewnowski [7] (Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 108 (1990), 523–526) is used to establish a result for operator-valued measures, from which we obtain as corollaries the Vitali–Hahn–Saks–Nikodym theorem, the Nikodym Boundedness theorem and a Banach space version of the Phillips Lemma.

In this paper, by using the Leggett–Williams fixed point theorem, the existence of three positive periodic solutions for differential equations with piecewise constant argument and impulse on time scales is investigated. Some easily verifiable sufficient criteria are established. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the results.
