This paper presents new U–Pb zircon analyses from garnet–sillimanite paragneisses from the Gweta borehole in northeast Botswana. Concordant to near-concordant analyses of zircon from these rocks reveal a billion year history from 3015 ± 21 Ma for the oldest detrital grain measured, to the age of high-grade metamorphism, 2027 ± 8 Ma. The maximum age of sedimentation in the Magondi belt is constrained by the age of the youngest concordant detrital zircon at 2125 ± 6 Ma. This contrasts with the age of sedimentation in the Central Zone of the Limpopo belt which is Archaean. The comparison of our results with U–Pb zircon data from the Magondi belt in Zimbabwe suggests that the granulite-facies metamorphism in this belt extended between c. 2027–1960 Ma. Granulite-facies rocks with U–Pb zircon ages in this interval are also known in the Ubendian belt and lend support to the correlation of these two segments of Palaeoproterozoic belts in southern and central–eastern Africa. The granulite facies metamorphism in the Magondi belt is coeval with the high-grade metamorphism and granitoids documented further south in the Central Zone of the Limpopo Belt.

Kronprins Christian Land lies at the northernmost limit of the East Greenland Caledonides, and may be divided into four main tracts: foreland, parautochthon, thin-skinned thrust sheets containing Neoproterozoic sediments, and thick-skinned thrust sheets of crystalline basement. The eastern part of the foreland and the parautochthon are composed of Ordovician–Silurian shelf carbonates overlain by Llandovery–lower Wenlock turbidites deposited at the southern margin of the Franklinian Basin. Deformation of the parautochthon occurred beneath a major detachment, the Vandredalen thrust, with Neoproterozoic sediments of the Rivieradal Group lying in the hanging wall. The Rivieradal Group was deposited in an E-facing half-graben and was displaced westwards across its rift shoulders during Caledonian thrusting. Extensive sampling for conodonts has been carried out within the Lower Palaeozoic rocks of the foreland and parautochthon in order to increase the precision of structural interpretations and to provide data on maximum burial temperature and, in turn, the thickness of overburden. In contrast to earlier studies, conodont colour alteration indices (CAI) show a gradual and continuous increase from CAI 3 in the eastern part of the foreland to CAI 5+ in the easternmost parts of the parautochthon. The isopleths are not disrupted or truncated by thrusting, as previously suspected, indicating that the heating is not attributable to pre-thrusting stratigraphic overburden. Furthermore, considerations of the regional geology indicate that there was no significant accumulation of sedimentary overburden in post-Caledonian time; the predominant component is thus considered to be loading by thrust sheets. Modelling of the overburden thickness suggests that, prior to erosion, it increased from 3.9 km (CAI 3) in the easternmost foreland to a maximum of 12.5 km beneath the Vandredalen thrust sheet in the easternmost part of the area, providing constraints for restoring cross-sections across the orogen.

In North Greenland, the E–W-trending Harder Fjord Fault Zone represents a major lineament which cuts through Cambrian to Silurian deep-water sediments of the Franklinian Basin over a distance of 300 km. On both sides of the fault zone, these successions were affected by two stages of folding (F1, F2) during Devonian to Early Carboniferous (Ellesmerian) deformation. No field evidence was found that the Harder Fjord Fault Zone was active prior to Ellesmerian folding. Early movements along the fault zone are indicated by post-Ellesmerian sedimentation of coarse red-beds (Depot Bugt conglomerate) which represent the oldest of the Wandel Sea Basin sediments. They were probably deposited in narrow, fault-controlled (?)Late Carboniferous basins similar to those described from Svalbard. During Late Cretaceous times, 500 m thick fluvial and marine clastic sediments were unconformably deposited over the folded Cambro-Ordovician units. Although no direct field evidence suggests that sedimentation was controlled by displacements along the Harder Fjord Fault Zone, the intrusion of Upper Cretaceous mafic sills and dykes indicates a phase of important crustal extension related to reactivation of the fault zone during this period of time. This stage was followed by post-late Santonian (Eurekan) N–S compression (D3) which affected the Franklinian Basin deposits, Wandel Sea Basin sediments and mafic intrusions. In general, it was concentrated along the Harder Fjord Fault Zone and probably caused the reactivation of pre-existing (?)Carboniferous and younger fault lines. The entire deformation and its timing are comparable with the Eurekan structures found at the Kap Cannon Thrust Zone in northernmost Greenland and are related to intracontinental compression prior to the separation of Svalbard from Greenland.

The presence of alluvial fan deposits in the lower Neoproterozoic Torridon Group in northwest Scotland illuminates Torridonian basin development at the eastern Laurentian margin. The 450 m thick Cape Wrath Member of the Applecross Formation consists of alluvial fan conglomerate and arkose succeeded by more distal, braidplain feldspathic sandstone. Palaeocurrent data comprising >2650 measurements on trough cross-bedding are of low variability and show overall eastward flow. The projection upcurrent of regionally divergent flow directions for the lower part of the member indicates a fan of c. 50 km radius with its apex 30 km to the west near a basement (pre-Caledonian) normal fault with downthrow to the east beneath the north Minch Basin. Extensional tectonics controlled deposition of the Applecross Formation. Regional uplift, causing erosion of a youthful topography on the Lewisian Gneiss, was followed by the development of the Applecross extensional basin in two main stages. Uplift of a western source area by movement on basin-bounding normal faults occurred first in the north and caused pediplanation and alluvial fan deposition in the Cape Wrath area, with subsequent uplift of the source area for the main body of the Applecross Formation occurring further to the west and south along the line of the Minch Fault. The bulk of the Applecross Formation was derived from a weathered terrain of felsic crystalline and related supracrustal rocks reaching from the Outer Hebrides region westward for up to c. 250 km onto what are now the continental margins of the North Atlantic. The tectonic events may mark an early phase in the crustal extension that led ultimately to the opening of the Iapetus ocean.

The Arabian–Nubian Shield evolved through a sequence of tectonomagmatic cycles, which took place during Neoproterozoic time (1000–540 Ma). Dyke emplacement constitutes one of the conspicuous features of the Arabian–Nubian Shield, with mafic dykes being the most abundant. The investigated dykes represent the youngest Neoproterozoic mafic dykes and have been dated in Jordan at 545 ± 13 Ma. Geochemically the studied dykes are mildly alkaline, are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and high field strength cations (HFSC), show moderate enrichment of REE, and lack Nb anomaly. These features are consistent with a predominantly extensional continental tectonic setting. Crystallization temperatures of the suite fall between 1050 and 800 °C to as low as 650 °C as deduced from pyroxene thermometry. The investigated dykes were derived from a metasomatized lithospheric mantle by 5 % modal batch partial melting of phlogopite-bearing spinel lherzolite, according to geochemical modelling. The intra-suite geochemical features are explicable by 64 % fractional crystallization of olivine, pyroxene, plagioclase and titanomagnetite and possibly other accessories like apatite at a later stage. The cumulate produced from this fractionation of the investigated dyke suite contributed to the formation of the mafic lower crust of the Arabian–Nubian Shield. Elemental ratios and petrographic evidence indicate possible minor crustal contamination of the suite. The youngest mafic dykes show striking geochemical similarities to the same generation of dolerite dykes in the adjacent countries, to transitional young basalt suites of the Main East African Rift, and to Quaternary Jordanian basalts. The youngest mafic dyke suite, the rhyolites of the Aheimir suite, and St Katherina rhyolites of Sinai represent the last igneous activity in the Arabian–Nubian Shield before the onset of the Cambrian at about 545 Ma ago.

New records of phytoplankton (acritarchs), ichnofossils and olenellid trilobites have been studied from the autochthonous upper Neoproterozoic–Lower Cambrian successions along the Caledonian Thrust Front in the Laisvall–Storuman region of northern Sweden. The fossils are from a newly examined natural outcrop at Bergmyrhobben near Lake Storuman, and from previously described fossiliferous outcrops at Delliknäs and Mt. Assjatj, the Laisvall mine and the Maiva borehole successions in the Laisvall area. Acritarch assemblages are recorded throughout the Grammajukku Formation. They are age-diagnostic for the Skiagia–Fimbriaglomerella acritarch Zone, time-equivalent to the Schmidtiellus mickwitzi trilobite Zone (the lower part of the formation), and the Heliosphaeridium–Skiagia acritarch Zone corresponding to the Holmia kjerulfi trilobite Zone (the upper part of the formation). The acritarch record from the Storuman area documents the presence of strata contemporaneous to the Schmidtiellus mickwitzi Zone for the first time in the Scandinavian Caledonides. This zone was previously only recognized in the platform regions of the Baltica palaeocontinent. The ichnofossils from the upper Såvvovare Formation, including ?Harlaniella, Phycodes, Gyrolithes and Palaeophycus ichnogenera, allowed the base of the Cambrian System to be determined within the Maiva Member and the coeval Kautsky Ore Member in the subsurface successions, and to attribute this part of the formation to the Lower Cambrian Platysolenites antiquissimus faunal Zone of Baltica. The trilobite fauna from the Storuman area, attributed tentatively to Holmia sp., occurs at the lowermost stratigraphic level among olenellids in the Caledonides. The range of this species, estimated from the concurrent acritarch biostratigraphy, is within the Schmidtiellus mickwitzi Zone. The stratigraphic significance of the acritarch assemblages and ichnofossils is analysed and the biochronology of the Grammajukku Formation and the upper Såvvovare Formation is discussed in detail in the context of Lower Cambrian zonation in Baltica.

The Cautley Mudstone Formation and Cystoid Limestone Member of the Ashgill Formation (Windermere Supergroup; Ashgill Series), from the Cautley district of northern England, has yielded an ostracod fauna of more than 30 species. Many of these have short ranges, permitting recognition of stratigraphically successive Pusgillian–lower Cautleyan, middle–upper Cautleyan, and Rawtheyan ostracod faunas. Several species are also known from the upper Ordovician of North America (Anticosti Island), Scotland (Girvan district) and the Baltic region (Estonia, glacial erratic boulders of northern Germany), providing evidence to correlate upper Ordovician successions in these areas. The ostracods include abundant podocopes, at some horizons accounting for more than 80% of the fauna. Binodicopes are also common, but palaeocopes are rare. Assemblages are typical of a clastic dominated open marine shelf setting. Diversity at most horizons is low (c. 3–5 species), but reaches a peak of between 13–14 species in middle Cautleyan horizons. Lower diversity at Pusgillian and Rawtheyan horizons coincides with the encroachment of deeper marine-shelf facies which were probably hostile to Ordovician benthonic ostracods. Some of the ostracods (particularly Aechmina) have distributions suggesting tolerance of a range of mid- to deep shelf benthonic palaeoenvironments, but none were pelagic. During Ashgill times the Cautley district (part of palaeocontinental Avalonia) was replete with ostracod genera and species which also occur in the Baltic region (palaeocontinental Baltica; more than 90% generic similarity) and to a lesser, but nonetheless significant extent in North America and Scotland (parts of palaeocontinental Laurentia). Such trans-Tornquist Sea and Iapetus Ocean distributional patterns add to previous ostracod data that support models which show palaeogeographical proximity of Avalonia and Baltica, and Avalonia and Laurentia, by Ashgill times. The widely cited observation, that trans-Iapetus ostracod faunas remained strictly provincial until the mid-or late Silurian, cannot be sustained.

Thirty-nine K–Ar and one Ar–Ar radiometric dates from the eastern central Meso-Cenozoic Patagonian Batholith and eastern satellite plutons of the Aysén Region, of southern Chile between latitudes 45° and 48° S, combined with previous dating of seven plutons, have yielded six age groups: (1) Middle to Late Jurassic, (2) Early Cretaceous, (3) mid-Cretaceous, (4) Late Cretaceous, (5) Oligocene and (6) Miocene. In general, the Cretaceous and younger ages correspond to previous reported ages for other parts of the main batholith, but for the satellite plutons to the east show a wider age spectrum than the previously accepted Late Miocene dates. These results indicate a relatively continuous Late Jurassic to mid-Cretaceous plutonism, known to have been coeval with volcanic activity, followed by intermittent magmatism. Biotite K–Ar dates of c. 143–151 and 106–109 Ma, from cataclastic granitoids, may be marking the time of deformation. A review of all radiometric data on magmatic rocks from the region between 45° and 48° S in Chile shows a gap in Palaeocene ages that may correlate with a period of low-angle (flat slab) subduction between 65–50 Ma.

The Mäekalda section presents a c. 12 m thick succession of mainly limestones, dolomites and siltstones of late Tremadoc to late Llanvirn age, exposed on the eastern outskirts of Tallinn, northern Estonia. The condensed sequence is rich in well-preserved conodont elements that provide the basis for detailed biozonation. In the Baltoscandian zonation, beds from the upper Varangu Paltodus deltifer Zone up to the lower Aseri Eoplacognathus foliaceus Subzone have been identified. In all, the conodont faunas exhibit a close resemblance to Swedish faunas. Many intervals can also be compared with coeval strata in western Russia. The presence at some levels of representatives of Laurentian conodont lineages provides an unusual opportunity for correlating Baltoscandian sequences with sequences in North America, especially in the lower Arenig part of the succession. The middle Volkhov (upper middle Arenig) Paroistodus originalis Zone at Mäekalda is remarkably complete bearing in mind the highly condensed nature of the section as a whole. The details of this zone can be correlated with the equivalent intervals in Swedish sections. In the upper Volkhov–lower Kunda beds there is a considerable stratigraphic gap in the section, but the upper Kunda has provided an excellent series of successive populations of Eoplacognathus, indicating that in this part the section is virtually complete.

The Kula volcanic province lies in an area of active normal faulting in western Turkey. In this study, we show that the interaction of the basalts with the local drainage, and in particular the Gediz river, can be used to determine the history of fault movements downstream. The lava flows have been studied previously, and some of them dated. We use these results and combine them with new field observations of lavas that flowed into the river valley to measure the rate of down-cutting of the river and hence the rate of uplift of the footwall block due to movement of the graben-bounding fault. We show that there has been, in general, an acceleration of fault movement with time during the last 2 Ma. This increased activity of the graben-bounding fault is matched by an intensification of volcanic activity. An inferred four-fold increase in fault movement rate over the last 0.2 Ma has been matched by a similar increase in volume of volcanic activity.

The Lower Siwalik succession of the Jammu area has been distinguished into three major lithofacies associations: a sand-dominant association, a sandy-mud-dominant association, and a silty-heterolithic association. The sand-dominant association is made up of three lithofacies: cross-bedded sandstone, rippled silty sandstone and bioturbated sandy siltstone, which are organized in multi-storeyed sandbodies representing deposition in major river channels. The sandy-mud-dominant association is made up of two lithofacies, mottled clayey siltstone and interbedded sandstone, siltstone and mudstone, representing deposition in overbank areas of flood-plain and natural levee-crevasse splays. The sand-dominant association and sandy-mud-dominant association are grouped together as a channel-related succession and are products of processes in the river channel. The silty-heterolithic association consists of four lithofacies: mottled siltstone, mottled silty sandstone, bedded calcrete and mottled mudstone. They are considered to be deposits of Doab (upland interfluve) areas operating independently of present-day major river channels. These deposits have been formed in minor channels, sloping surfaces, and lakes and ponds of the interfluve regions. The cyclicity of both successions (channel-related and Doab-related) has been determined using a partial-independence statistical model.

The Outer Hebrides Fault Zone is a major ESE-dipping reactivated structure within Lewisian basement gneisses of the Laurentian craton, northwest Scotland. Detailed mapping in South Uist reveals important new evidence that contributes to a better understanding of the kinematic evolution of the fault zone. Large quantities of pseudotachylite which characterize the fault zone on South Uist may in part be lithologically controlled, and therefore of little value in determining areas of greatest deformation and displacement. Only limited evidence is preserved for ductile and brittle thrust-sense movements along this portion of the fault zone. The tectonics of the fault zone on South Uist are dominated by structures associated with several episodes of pervasive top-down-to-the-SE to -ENE brittle extensional deformation, which are progressively overprinted by protophyllonitic and phyllonitic fabrics associated with top-down-to-the-E to -ENE extension. A series of late-stage high-angle normal faults record top-down-to-the-ESE to -ENE extension and cut the phyllonites. Fluid inclusion studies from syntectonic quartz veins constrain the conditions of phyllonite formation at 370 ± 20 °C. Field evidence suggests that this section of the Outer Hebrides Fault Zone may have been largely unaffected by sinistral strike-slip reactivation as reported along-strike to the north, suggesting both a varied and compartmentalized tectonic and evolutionary history along the length of the Outer Hebrides Fault Zone.

The Slieve League Peninsula of northwest Ireland lies on the western limb of a major orogenic strike-swing in which regional foliation trends have deviated from the northeast–southwest trends typical of much of Scotland, to west–east orientations. Across-strike coastal exposures on the western tip of the peninsula through Neoproterozoic Dalradian metasediments enable a detailed examination and analysis of the structural evolution of a Caledonian orogenic root zone which has been previously correlated with the Loch Awe Syncline of southwest Scotland. Minor structural development may be evaluated in terms of regional strain profiles and overprinting relationships. Over much of the area, a composite, steep northeast–southwest-trending S2–S3 foliation containing a gently southwest-plunging quartz mineral elongation lineation is the dominant fabric at outcrop, and is associated with MP2 almandine–amphibolite facies metamorphism. F2 folds are isoclinal with curvilinear hinges and similar geometry. They typically plunge steeply towards the southwest and display variable (dextral) or north-directed vergence, whilst minor F3 fold hinges plunge moderately towards the southwest and typically verge (sinistrally) towards the south. Major, composite D1–D3 tectonic slides are developed in the Argyll Group. Structural and stratigraphic relationships indicate that D1 induced large-scale reversals in younging across tectonic slides, resulting in reversals in subsequent F2 and F3 facing patterns. Tectonic sliding is associated with an intensification of strain demonstrated by increasingly intrafolial and curvilinear folding, together with extensional crenulations, sheared quartz pods and metre-scale asymmetric boudinage of metadolerites, all of which indicate dextral (D2) and sinistral (D3) shear. After unfolding subsequent folds (F4), this corresponds to top-to-the-north (D2) and top-to-the-south (D3) translations. D4 results in regionally northwest-verging structures, with minor crenulations and the S4 cleavage transecting fold hinges in an anticlockwise sense, suggesting a dextral component of deformation. The detailed kinematic data indicate that the overall geometry of this western, deep-level arm of the root zone is not a product of the classic mushrooming fountain of nappes model, but rather major interference between consistent northerly directed D2 thrusting and a later phase of southeast-directed (D3) retrocharriage (‘back-folding’) which intensifies towards the south.

The northernmost exposures of rocks formed during the Late Neoproterozoic Cadomian orogeny in the Channel Islands–northern France region occur on Alderney. The island mainly comprises foliated quartz diorite, once considered to be 2 Ga, pre-Cadomian basement, and an undeformed basic to intermediate plutonic complex. A precise age of 610±2 Ma, based on U–Pb analyses of single and small groups of zircons, for the foliated Fort Tourgis quartz diorite demonstrates that the oldest rocks were emplaced and deformed during a Cadomian magmatic event. The age is virtually identical to ages from similar, foliated syntectonic quartz diorite bodies on the islands of Guernsey and Sark and at La Hague (north Normandy), indicating that this magmatic and deformational event was regional in extent. Discordant zircon xenocrysts define an upper intercept age of c. 2 Ga indicating the presence of Palaeoproterozoic basement at depth. Single zircons from the undeformed Bibette Head granodiorite give a precise U–Pb age of 572±1 Ma. This age is closely similar to that for the emplacement of the Northern Igneous Complex of Guernsey. The emerging data indicate that Cadomian magmatism in the northern Channel Islands region was not a protracted continuum, but occurred during two distinct, short-lived events separated by c. 30–40 my.

The Eastern Ghats granulite belt of India has traditionally been described as a Proterozoic mobile belt, with probable Archaean protoliths. However, recent findings suggest that synkinematic development of granulites took place in a compressional tectonic regime and that granulite facies metamorphism resulted from crustal thickening. The field, petrological and geochemical studies of a charnockite massif of tonalitic to trondhjemitic composition, and associated rocks, document granulite facies metamorphism and dehydration partial melting of basic rocks at lower crustal depths, with garnet granulite residues exposed as cognate xenoliths within the charnockite massif. The melting and generation of the charnockite suite under granulite facies conditions have been dated c. 3.0 Ga by Sm–Nd and Rb–Sr whole rock systematics and Pb–Pb zircon dating. Sm–Nd model dates between 3.4 and 3.5 Ga and negative epsilon values provide evidence of early Archaean continental crust in this high-grade terrain.

The Mount El-Sibai alkaline granitic complex (eastern Egypt) forms an elongate body, which was emplaced at the extension of a NW-trending shear zone, within voluminous calc-alkaline Pan-African host rocks. The complex is hypersolvus in nature and is composed of perthite, quartz, alkali amphibole, Fe-rich biotite, and accessory zircon, apatite, fluorite, aenigmatite and ilmenite. Data on mineral chemistry show that the amphibole ranges in composition from hastingsite to pure end-member arfvedsonite, and the biotite is largely titaniferous annite. Geochemically, the complex is highly evolved in composition (with 72–78 wt% SiO2, and DI values of 85–98), is enriched in Rb (48–291 ppm), Nb (28–237 ppm), Y (47–269 ppm), Zr (58–618 ppm), Ga (17–41 ppm) and the REE (176–437 ppm), and depleted in Al, Mg, Ca, Sr and Eu. The complex exhibits a wide trace-element compositional range. The REE patterns are uniform, parallel to sub-parallel, fractionated ((La/Yb)n = 4.7), LREE enriched over HREE, and show prominent negative Eu-anomalies. The albitized facies of this complex shows the highest concentrations of large ion lithophile (LIL) and high field strength (HFS) elements. The complex exhibits mineralogical and chemical traits typical of within-plate A-type granites. Mount El-Sibai is interpreted to have been developed during a phase of cooling, relaxation, crustal attenuation, and fracturing of the newly formed Pan-African crust. Results of geochemical modelling indicate that the magma may have formed by a large degree of batch partial melting (F=0.65) of Pan-African calc-alkaline rocks, which had been metasomatized. Metasomatism of source rocks may have been caused by a Na–F-rich fluid phase compositionally similar to that which produced the albitized facies. The volatile flux may have caused fenitization-type reactions along fissures and re-activated Pan-African fractures prior to anatexis, and is considered to have played a role as an important agent of heat transfer. Temperature necessary for crustal anatexis is likely to have been produced as a result of shear heating, caused by a rapid change in the direction of plate motions beneath eastern Egypt during Early Palaeozoic times. The confining pressure must have been released by fissuring of the crust. Magma ascent may have been facilitated by reactivation of pre-existing faults and shear zones. This model may have wider implications for the generation of within-plate felsic magmas in other regions.

This paper presents new radiolarian biostratigraphic and igneous/metamorphic geochemical data for a Mesozoic volcanic–sedimentary mélange on the island of Evia (Euboea or Evvoia), eastern Greece. This mélange includes dismembered thrust sheets and blocks of radiolarian chert and basalt. Biostratigraphic age data show that radiolarites interbedded with basalt-derived, coarse clastic sediments near the base of a coherent succession were deposited in Middle and Late Triassic time (Late Ladinian–Carnian, Norian?). Geochemical evidence shows that associated extrusive rocks, of inferred Triassic age, range from ‘enriched’ alkaline basalts, to ‘transitional’ basalts, and more ‘depleted’ mid-ocean ridge-type basalts. Amphibolite facies meta-basalts from the metamorphic sole of the over-riding Evia ophiolite exhibit similar chemical compositions. Both the basalts and the meta-basalts commonly show an apparent subduction-related influence (e.g. relative Nb depletion) that may have been inherited from a previous subduction event in the region. The basalts are interpreted to have erupted during Middle–Late Triassic time (Late Ladinian–Carnian), related to initial opening of a Neotethyan ocean basin adjacent to a rifted continental margin. Radiolarites located stratigraphically higher in the coherent succession studied are dated as Middle Jurassic (Late Bathonian–Early Callovian). Similar-aged radiolarites are depositionally associated with ophiolitic rocks (including boninites), in some other areas of Greece and Albania. During initial ocean basin closure (Bajocian–Bathonian) the adjacent shallow-water carbonate platform (Pelagonian zone) disintegrated to form basins in which siliceous sediments were deposited and highs on which shallow-water carbonates continued to accumulate. This facies differentiation is seen as a response to crustal flexure as the Neotethyan ocean began to close. The over-riding Pagondas Mélange and other similar units in the region are interpreted as accretionary prisms related to subduction of Neotethyan oceanic crust in Middle–Late Jurassic time. These mélanges were emplaced, probably diachronously during Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian time, when the passive margin collapsed, creating a foredeep ahead of advancing thrust sheets of mélange and ophiolites.

The basement of the North China Craton consists of the Eastern and Western blocks, separated by the Central Zone. Both the Eastern and Western blocks are dominated by late Archaean tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioritic gneiss complexes interdigitated with minor supracrustal rocks metamorphosed at ∼2.5 Ga, with anticlockwise P–T paths. The Central Zone is composed of reworked late Archaean components and Palaeoproterozoic juvenile crustal materials that underwent regional metamorphism at ∼1.85 Ga, with clockwise P–T paths involving isothermal decompression as a result of collision between the Eastern and Western blocks, which resulted in the final assembly of the North China Craton.
