In parts of Rosedale and Farndale the Serpula Beds are exactly as in Fryup and Danby; they consist of very fine-grained sandstones or silts, blue, grey, green, yellow, or brown in colour, according to the degree of oxidation, and always full of worm tubes. In many specimens it is clear that practically the whole of the material has been passed through the bodies of worms, leading to a very confused structure. The worm tubes may be several inches long: they are only occasionally vertical or straight, but usually arranged in an irregular manner. Fossils, usually broken and badly preserved, are sporadic, but deter-minable ammonites of the striatulum and dispansum zones have been recorded in different parts of the area (Macmillan, 1932, and this paper).

As I have prepared descriptions of nearly all the fossils of Victoria collected by the Geological Survey under Mr. Selwyn for some years, I have been urged to make a preliminary publication in the Geological Magazine of some ofthe remarkable forms, and I now forward my descriptive note of the two Tertiary Trigoniœ, on account of Mr. Jenkins' paper in the May number of this Journal, in which one of them is referred to the recent T. Lamarckii. I feel assured that if Mr. Jenkins will look at the edge along the ribs, towards the beak of a recent specimen of T. Lamarckii and my T. acuticostata from the Tertiary beds, he will at once appreciate the distinctive form of the ribs which I point out and figure in the annexed woodcut.

An account is given of the history of the term “eucrite”. It is shown to be very varied and hence has been a source of confusion to authors wishing to employ the word with precision, and to readers trying to understand its exact meaning. Because of the lack of agreement over the interpretation of this word, the author proposes that its use should be discontinued and the term “gabbro” utilized in its place.

A series of hypersthene-bearing rocks of plutonic aspect from an area east of Mount Kenya is described, with the assistance of modal analyses. A petrographic classification of such rocks, somewhat more detailed than is usually employed, is suggested, with provision for hornblende-rich types. Associated rocks are briefly described.

Zone of Scaphites æqualis.—Beneath the Yellow Chalk of West Dorset and South Somerset occurs a very constant bed of yellow calcareous paste, with glauconitic grains, and containing at the base numerous small minute pebbles of quartz, the whole being so well cemented together as to be used at Pennys Toller, near Bea-minster, as a rough building stone. In 1865 I collected from this zone a large number of fossils, most of which I found to occur in the Cambridgeshire “ Chloritic marl,” Chardstock, Buckram, and Pennys Toller being perhaps the most fossiliferous localities. At the base occurs a well-marked horizon of Ammonites Rhothomagensis.

[In a recently published paper Dr. N. O. Holst, of the Geological Survey of Sweden, has given a detailed description of the Post-Glacial deposits of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. The paper is accompanied by a map showing the chief points of observation. The determination of the different horizons depends on (1) the stratigraphy; (2) the sub-fossil diatomaceous flora; (3) the sub-fossil higher flora. The stratigraphical evidence is in the form of numerous sections, taken all along the coast. The diatoms are used chiefly, but not solely, to distinguish the marine from the fresh-water deposits; their determinations, nearly 3,000 in number, are due to Professor P. T. Cleve and his daughter, Dr. Astrid Cleve. The remains of the higher plants have been determined by Dr. Gunnar Andersson.

During the autumn of 1909, I made a short excursion into the Bridgend district and examined the Avonian sequence near Llantrisant. The present note embodies the results of a few traverses and suggests a correlation with the sequence already established at other points of the South-West Province.

During recent years, much attention has been directed to the importance of the Rhombic Pyroxenes (Enstatites) as rock-forming minerals. In 1879 Prof. Fouqué showed that hypersthene is a common mineral in the Santorin lavas, and in 1883 Mr. Whitman Cross demonstrated that there exists a large and important class of andesites, distinguished by the presence in them of the same mineral hypersthene. Mr. Teall, in the pages of this Magazine, has pointed out that similar lavas exist in this country, which are undoubtedly of pre-Tertiary age; and, now that the attention of geologists has been very generally drawn to the subject, the same rocks have been recognized by many observers in all parts of the globe.

This pit has already formed the subject of communications to the Society. In one read February 16th, 1863, and in a subsequent paper published in the GeologicalMagazine, Vol. II., p. 529, Mr. Seeley maintained, as I believe Professor Sedgwick had always held, that the singular juxtaposition of Kimmeridge Clay, Cretaceous rocks, and Boulder-clay, was due to faulting. In 1868 the Rev. O. Fisher communicated a paper, in which he accounted for the phenomena, by considering the Cretaceous beds as a huge boulderlike fragment, dropped into a valley which it had excavated in the Kimmeridge Clay, with the intervening space filled up with Boulderclay. Shortly after this had been read, Mr. Seeley published a paper in the GeologicalMagazine (Vol. V., p. 347), in which he attacked Mr. Fisher's view. The explanation of the phenomena may therefore be fairly regarded as still sub judice. During the last three years I have from time to time visited the pit, and purpose to lay before the Society the conclusions at which I have arrived, from repeated comparison of the rival theories with the sections exhibited during the progress of the works.

As the remains of insects are rarely found in Carboniferous strata, a short account of three imperfect specimens, which have been discovered in the Durham coal-field, may not be deemed valueless. Indeed, with the exceptions of the specimens described from Coal-brook Dale by Prestwich, twenty-five years ago, and the examples of Xylobius sigillariœ of Dawson,—discovered by Mr. Tindall, in the Lower Coal Measures, near Huddersfield, and by Mr. Thomas Brown, of Stewarton, in the Upper Coal Measures of Kilmaurs,—I am not aware of any other fossils of this class having been noticed as occuring in Carboniferous rocks in England.

The Orthopteron wing which forms the subject of the present paper was obtained by Mr. David Davies from a dark-blue shale, about 10 feet in thickness, overlying the No. 2 Rhondda coal-seam in Clydach Vale (see Plate XV). The shale decreases to the east, dying out wholly 2 miles beyond the colliery, giving place to sandstone. I am indebted to Mr. Davies for the opportunity of describing the specimen.
