Intercropping maize with pigeon peas, in a mixed stand or in alternate rows, significantly reduced the grain yield of maize but not of pigeon peas. Maize grown alone produced the maximum grain yield ha.−1 week−1, whereas maize and pigeon peas grown in alternate rows produced maximum proteins ha.−1 week−1 and absorbed the maximum amounts of potassium, calcium and magnesium. Pigeon peas grown in a pure stand produced minimum grain yield and proteins ha.−1 week−1, and absorbed minimum amounts of nutrients. The problem of intercropping maize with pigeon peas under optimum nitrogen fertilization is discussed.

Maize production in Malawi is limited by high costs and sub-optimal use of chemical fertilizers under continuous cultivation. A long-term gliricidia/maize trial was undertaken on a Ferric Lixisol from 1991/92 to 2001/02. The purpose of the study was to assess the performance of a gliricidia/maize intercropping system as a low-input soil fertility replenishment option in southern Malawi. The experiment was a 2 × 3 × 3 factorial design with three replications. Treatments included two maize cropping systems (with and without gliricidia trees), and three rates of inorganic N fertilizer (0, 24 and 48 N kg ha−1 representing 0, 25 and 50% of the national recommended N rate), and three rates of P fertilizer application (0, 20 and 40 P ha−1 representing 0, 50 and 100% of the recommended rate). No effect of P was detected on yield early in the trial, and this treatment was discontinued. The gliricidia pruning biomass did not decline after 10 years of intensive pruning, with strong correlation between tree biomass production and years after establishment (r = 0.91, p < 0.001). Application of gliricidia prunings increased maize yields by three times compared to the yield of unfertilized sole maize. Maize yield from the unfertilized gliricidia pruning treatment was superior to the yield from sole maize supplemented with a quarter or half the recommended N rate. The study confirmed that a gliricidia/maize intercropping system is a promising soil fertility replenishment option in southern Malawi and elsewhere in southern Africa.

A laboratory experiment was conducted to determine the effect of ultrasound (US) treatment on seed germination of chickpea, wheat, pepper and watermelon. All tests were carried out at 40 kHz in a water bath ultrasonic device varying two factors, treatment duration (5, 10, 15, 30, 45 or 60 min) and germination temperature (15 or 20 °C). Parallel tests were run in which seeds were soaked in water without sonication in order to eliminate the effect of water from US test results. The effects of US on seed germination varied between crops and were more obvious on germination speed, expressed as germination rate index (GRI), rather than on germination percentage (GP). In particular, US treatment significantly increased the GRI of chickpeas, wheat and watermelon, resulting in a maximum increase of 133% (at 45 min), 95% (30 min) and 45% (5 min), respectively, above control seeds. The beneficial effects of US on the GRI of these crops were observed at both 15 and 20 °C, suggesting that US treatment offers a practical priming method to overcome the slow germination that may occur at low temperatures. Water-soaking treatment improved the GP of both chickpea and pepper seeds by 59 and 24%, respectively, compared to the control but neither water nor US had any positive effect on pepper GRI. Post-treatment measurement of moisture content of these seeds produced variable results depending on crop species and US treatment duration. Results of this research indicated that US treatment effectively enhanced speed of germination of chickpea, wheat and watermelon seeds. This increase in speed of germination may improve early field establishment of these crops in the semiarid Mediterranean region and thus needs further investigation. The US technique may also be very useful for plant propagators in nurseries to achieve fast seedling establishment of watermelon.

The analysis of radiation climate is a central problem of agricultural meteorology because rates of photosynthesis depend on the receipt of visible light and rates of transpiration depend on the net exchange of radiation by a crop canopy. Both short-wave (solar) and long-wave (terrestrial) radiation are correlated with cloud amount, and in south-east England the income of net radiation in summer is proportional to the income of solar radiation.

In principle, the fraction of total radiation in the visible waveband depends on cloud cover and on the amount of absorption and scattering in the atmosphere, but in practice the fraction is often between 0·40 and 0·45. The calculation of photosynthetic efficiency needs a figure for the number of quanta (or Einsteins) per unit energy, and this figure can be calculated from the mean wavelength of the radiation weighted by energy, about 0·55μ for direct sunlight.

The reflection of radiation by vegetation changes with solar elevation, and at angles between 40° and 60° it ranges between 0·15 for a rough crop (e.g. pineapple) to 0·26 for smoother crops (e.g. sugar beet, kale). The transmission of radiation through the canopy can be expressed as a function of the leaf area index and a parameter that depends on the distribution and orientation of leaves.

A participatory plant breeding (PPB) programme was conducted for the high altitude areas of Nepal. The aim was to breed acceptable varieties with minimum use of resources and to utilize farmers' knowledge in the PPB programme. Farmer participation began at the F5 stage and progress was followed over two seasons in two villages. Farmers proved to be willing participants and made selections in the segregating material, often with great success. Large differences in farmers' preferences between the F5 bulks were found and the most preferred were adopted rapidly. The most adopted variety, Machhapuchhre-3, performed well in the formal trials system, and much better than the products from conventional centralized breeding. The PPB programme increased biodiversity in the two participating villages.

Using farmer resource typologies, adaptability analysis and an on-farm mother and baby trial approach, we evaluated the production risks of alternative maize-legume crop combinations for smallholder farmers in Chisepo, central Malawi between 1998 and 2002. Production benefits and risks of four soil fertility and food legumes, pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan), groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), tephrosia (Tephrosia vogelii) and mucuna (Mucuna pruriens), intercropped or rotated with maize, were compared by 32 farmers in 4 farmer resource groups (RGs) of different wealth status. The calculation of lower confidence limits was used to determine the production risk of the crops. Alternative crop technologies presented different risks to farmers of different wealth status, and the degree of risk affected their choice of soil fertility management strategy. The better-resourced farmers (RG 1) had larger yields with all crop combinations than the poorly resourced farmers (RG 4). Legumes integrated with maize significantly (p < 0.001) raised maize grain yields by between 0.5 t ha−1 and 3.4 t ha−1, when compared with sole crop unfertilized maize. Fertilized maize was less of a risk for the better-resourced farmers (RG 1 and RG 2), and it yielded well when combined with the legumes. Maize-legume intercrops yielded more and were associated with less risk than the maize-legume rotations. Maize intercropped with pigeonpea was predicted overall to be the least risky technology for all RGs. We conclude that new crop technologies may pose more risk to poorly resourced farmers than to wealthier farmers.

Twenty one strains of Brassica carinata were tested under irrigated, rainfed and saline soil conditions and five strains under late sowing conditions along with five varieties each of B. juncea, B. napus and B. campestris var. yellow sarson, brown sarson and toria. Brassica juncea had the largest seed and oil yield under irrigated conditions but B. carinata performed much better than other species under late sowing, rainfed and saline soil conditions.

The present structure of plant breeding and seed multiplication in India is highly centralized. Furthermore, only a small number of new varieties is officially released each year. The system therefore appears inappropriate for the requirements of the large proportion of Indian farmers located in risk-prone and highly diverse environments. An alternative strategy is described whose central feature is close matching of the characteristics of farmers' traditional rice varieties with those of advanced breeders' lines. A selection from these lines is then distributed in small quantities for on-farm trials managed by farmers themselves. If the success of these initial efforts is to be sustained, a more decentralized approach to breeding and multiplication will be necessary.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is a promising post-wet-season crop to follow rainfed rice (Oryza sativa) in the High Barind Tract of northwestern Bangladesh. Yields in farmers' fields, however, remain low (<1 t ha−1) primarily due to such factors as poor crop establishment, late sowing, and terminal drought and heat stress. Having been shown to improve plant stand and yield of chickpea in other environments, seed priming – soaking the seed overnight before surface drying and sowing the next day – was tested for its efficacy under Barind conditions.

In the 1998–99 season, 30 trials grown entirely on residual soil moisture were conducted in farmers' fields. A statistically significant mean yield response to priming of 47% was obtained. In 1999–2000, 105 on-farm trials and 15 demonstrations comparing presence and absence of priming were conducted. The crop received rain during this growing season. In a randomly chosen subset of 35 trials, scientists recorded a mean yield increase due to priming of 20%; it was 22% (from 1.02 to 1.25 t ha−1) in the remaining 64 trials (6 of the 105 trials were abandoned) where farmers recorded yields. Using a different variety, the mean yield response to priming in 15 demonstrations was 17% (from 1.25 to 1.46 t ha−1).

The priming response was attributed mainly to rapid seedling establishment, with higher plant stand and earlier crop maturity allowing escape from end-of-season stresses. Priming also reduced the incidence of stem and root diseases, and increased nodulation by native rhizobia. This simple technology can substantially increase chickpea yields to remunerative levels for the resource-poor farmers in this difficult environment. Further, it is suggested that this technology can act as a catalyst for the introduction of further technologies that will permit reliable and profitable cultivation of post-rainy-season crops and thus improve the livelihoods of the rural population.

Small-scale dairy farming has been suggested as a rural development option for Mexican campesino communities. However, there is a lack of information on how dairy farming systems operate. The objective of this paper is to analyse the social, productive and economic characteristics of small-scale dairy production systems in the central highlands in the northwest of the State of Mexico. These three characteristics were analysed on 69 farms using factor and cluster analysis. Five factors accounted for 68% of cumulative variance. Cluster analysis yielded three well-defined groups. A Kruskal–Wallis test was performed on the arable land area and the number of animals, and analysis of variance for milk yield. Economic analysis was undertaken using activity budgets. Results showed the relationships between scale and management methods and their effects on the income for the family. Families in only one of the three groups receive incomes from dairying that were above all Mexican poverty indices. This outcome is explained by the intensification in the management of their herds, which is reflected in higher milk yields, higher incomes and better access to government support schemes. Enhancement of milk production in the area studied needs differential policies which take in to account differences between the groups identified.

Practical solutions are described to problems incurred in growing cultivars of cowpea, soyabean, lima bean and pigeon pea under simulated tropical conditions in controlled environments, namely (a) ‘Saxcil’ growth cabinets in which daylength, day and night temperatures, light intensity and quality, relative humidity and CO2, concentration are precisely controlled and can be varied over time; (b) compartmentalized glasshouses and adjoining dark compartments where daylength, and day and night temperatures are automatically controlled and night-break illumination can be provided, and (c) heated plastic film houses in which daylength-insensitive tropical legumes can be grown to maturity during the UK summer months since the environment of the wet tropics can be simulated in all respects other than daylength.

The results of research on the water relations and irrigation need of Citrus spp. are collated and reviewed in an attempt to link fundamental studies on crop physiology to drought mitigation and irrigation practices. Background information is given on the centres of origin (south-east Asia) and of production of citrus (areas with subtropical Mediterranean-type climates). The effects of water stress on the development processes of the crop are summarised followed by reviews of the plant water relations, crop water requirements, water productivity and irrigation systems. The topic is complicated by the diversity of species and cultivars (including rootstocks) that are embraced within Citrus spp. The effects of water availability on vegetative growth are understood in general terms, but the relationships have not yet been quantified. Similarly, the need for a ‘rest period’ to induce flowering is understood, but its magnitude (in terms of a drought stress index or day-degrees) does not appear to have been specified with precision. Again, the effects of drought on flower and fruit formation and retention are understood in general terms, but the relationships have not been quantified in useful ways for specific cultivars. Rooting depth and distribution have only been described in a limited number of situations. Environmental factors influencing stomatal conductances are generally well described and relationships with some growth processes established. Compared with other crops, low stomatal/canopy conductance restricts water use of Citrus spp. Some (limited) progress has been made in quantifying crop water requirements in specific conditions. Despite many recent attempts to specify how little water can be applied at specific growth stages to optimise water productivity through regulated deficit irrigation, no consensus view has emerged. The yield response to ‘full’ irrigation is of the order 6–7 kg fresh fruit m−3 as a result of an increase in the number of fruit of marketable size. There are also improvements in fruit quality. The most effective way of irrigating a citrus orchard is with a microirrigation system (drip or microsprinklers), but both methods require answers to the question: what proportion of the root zone needs to be irrigated? Both methods, especially drip, allow water to be applied (with fertigation) at very frequent intervals (including several times a day), although formal evidence of the benefits to be obtained from this level of intensification is lacking.

Cyanobacteria represent promising organic inputs in rice–wheat cropping system, as they contribute towards accretion of N and C, besides secreting growth-promoting substances which influence plant productivity and soil fertility. The present study focused towards using a combinatorial approach for evaluating field-level colonization of cyanobacteria in soil and their effect on soil microbiological and plant parameters, employing agronomic and molecular tools. A consortium of cyanobacterial strains (BF1, Anabaena sp., BF2, Nostoc sp., BF3, Nostoc sp. and BF4, Anabaena sp.) was employed in different three-and four-member combinations along with 75% N + Full dose of P and K fertilizers. A significant enhancement in microbial activity and plant growth/yields and savings of 25% N in the wheat–rice cropping sequence were recorded, especially in treatments involving 75% N + Full dose of PK+BF1+BF2+BF4 and T5, i.e. 75% N + Full dose of PK+BF1+BF2+BF3. Such treatments were significantly higher or statistically at par with fertilizer controls – 75% N + Full dose of PK fertilizers. The use of DNA-based markers further helped to establish the colonization of the inoculated cyanobacteria, especially BF2 and BF3 strains. Our study clearly illustrated the establishment of inoculated cyanobacterial strains and their role in enhancing the crop productivity and soil health of the rice–wheat cropping system.

The parasitic angiosperms, Striga hermonthica and S. gesnerioides, obligate root parasites endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, constitute severe constraints to cereal and legume production in West and Central Africa. Over the years, a range of effective component technologies has been identified for Striga control in Africa. The potential of these technologies has been demonstrated under researcher-managed conditions. To promote farmer testing of the technologies, community workshops were conducted in 42 rural communities in Kaduna State, northern Nigeria. These revealed that agriculture was the main source of livelihood for most households. The three most important crops, maize, sorghum and pearl millet are attacked by S. hermonthica, regarded as the major constraint to crop production, often causing 70–100% crop loss. Farmers recognised two types of Striga damage (underground and aboveground), with greater damage being caused by underground Striga. Farmers attributed increasing incidence and severity of Striga damage to lack of capital, poor soil fertility, infestation of previously uninfested land by Striga seeds, and continuous cropping of host crops. The most widely used among the 15 existing Striga control techniques identified by the farmers were hoe weeding and hand pulling, application of inorganic fertilizer and manure, crop rotations, fallowing, and early planting. In assessing possible control measures farmers considered increased crop yield, reduced Striga reproduction and Striga emergence, greater crop vigour, and increased soil fertility as positive attributes. Negative attributes comprised increased labour requirement, higher costs, increased risk of crop damage or yield reduction, and lower quantity and quality of produce. Overall, a legume-cereal rotation was the most highly rated control option for S. hermonthica management evaluated by the farmers. The implications of these results are examined with respect to farmers' adoption and adaptation of Striga control options beyond the experimental plots.

No-tillage and raised beds are widely used for different crops in developed countries. A field experiment was conducted on an irrigated maize-wheat system to study the effect of field layout, tillage and straw mulch on crop performance, water use efficiency and economics for five years (2003–2008) in northwest India. Straw mulch reduced the maximum soil temperature at seed depth by about 3 °C compared to the no mulch. During the wheat emergence, raised beds recorded 1.3 °C higher soil temperature compared to the flat treatments. Both maize and wheat yields were similar under different treatments during all the years. Maize and wheat planted on raised beds recorded about 7.8% and 22.7% higher water use efficiency than under flat layout, respectively. Straw mulch showed no effect on water use and water use efficiency in maize. The net returns from the maize-wheat system were more in no tillage and permanent raised beds than with conventional tillage. Bulk density and cumulative infiltration were more in no tillage compared with conventional tillage.

Genotype-environment (GE) interactions as a component of historically rising crop yields are reviewed. For various cereals (both temperate and tropical), past selection has seemingly evoked responsive varieties, and GE effects constitute about one third of the total estimated yield increase due to G + E + GE. In potatoes and sugarcanes, more stable (less responsive) varieties, less dependent upon good environments to do well, have been prominent. Historically, responses have been largely due to unconscious selection, but GE effects could be deliberately manipulated by breeding if it were desirable to do so, for example, to produce varieties adapted to low-input agriculture (already an object of breeding research in a few crops).

Recent literature suggests that to make value chains in changing agrifood systems in sub-Saharan Africa more inclusive, intermediary institutions should foster coordination. The hub concept has been applied as such an intermediary institution that coordinates advisory services, input supply and smallholder access to markets. This study unravels hub coordination in smallholder dairy in Kenya, conceptualising the hub as a mix between a broker of relationships, a one-stop-shop for services and a cluster of producers and service providers, enabling horizontal coordination (between smallholders) and vertical coordination (between smallholders and value chain actors and service providers). Findings indicate that, in resolving challenges that limit smallholders’ integration in value chains, synergies emerged as the hub combined different types of horizontal and vertical coordination. This was done by simultaneously organising clusters of farmers and input and service providers (clustering role) and actively facilitating delivery (broker and one-stop-shop role), where the hub structure stimulated the matching of demand (better articulation) to supply (better organised access). However, tensions emerged in the combination of horizontal and vertical coordination as farmer organisations as hub operators had to balance a role as an honest broker between farmers with the intent of enhancing collective action and as a business-oriented entity which resulted in the exclusion of some farmers who cannot deliver the quantity and quality required to minimise coordination costs. Given these tensions and capacity problems of farmers’ organisations, complementary intermediary arrangements may be necessary to fulfil some coordination roles.

Fifteen Australian and exotic wheat varieties revealed genotypic differences in their patterns of root development and drought tolerance. Earliness in plant maturity, which accounted for 40 to go per cent of the observed variation in drought tolerance, appeared to be by far the most important characteristic of tolerant genotypes, but there nevertheless appeared to be a measurable relationship between some parameters of root development, water use efficiency and drought tolerance. The impact of study of this kind on the problem of breeding for drought tolerance is briefly discussed.

A field technique is described in which trenches were dug and vertical polythene partitions installed to eliminate below-ground interactions between component crops in intercropping. With pearl millet/groundnut the control intercrop (i.e. not dug out) gave a yield advantage of 22% compared with sole cropping. A treatment dug out but refilled without polythene partitions was very similar to the control intercrop, indicating that the digging procedure per se had little effect on growth. An intercrop treatment in which below-ground partitions were installed gave a yield advantage of 19% over sole cropping, suggesting that the main determinant of yield advantage was an above-ground interaction between the canopies. However, partitioning decreased millet yield and increased groundnut yield, indicating that below-ground interactions were important in determining the competitive balance of the two crops. It is concluded that the partitioning technique is promising.
