In the field of Life Sciences, it is very common to deal with extremely complex systems, from both analytical and computational points of view, due to the unavoidable coupling of different interacting structures. As an example, angiogenesis has revealed to be an highly complex, and extremely interesting biomedical problem, due to the strong coupling between the kinetic parameters of the relevant branching – growth – anastomosis stochastic processes of the capillary network, at the microscale, and the family of interacting underlying biochemical fields, at the macroscale. In this paper, an original revisited conceptual stochastic model of tumour-driven angiogenesis has been proposed, for which it has been shown that it is possible to reduce complexity by taking advantage of the intrinsic multiscale structure of the system; one may keep the stochasticity of the dynamics of the vessel tips at their natural microscale, whereas the dynamics of the underlying fields is given by a deterministic mean field approximation obtained by an averaging at a suitable mesoscale. While in previous papers, only an heuristic justification of this approach had been offered; in this paper, a rigorous proof is given of the so called ‘propagation of chaos’, which leads to a mean field approximation of the stochastic relevant measures associated with the vessel dynamics, and consequently of the underlying tumour angiogenic factor (TAF) field. As a side, though important result, the non-extinction of the random process of tips has been proven during any finite time interval.

The method of classical Lie symmetries, generalised to differential-difference equations by Quispel, Capel and Sahadevan, is applied to the discrete nonlinear telegraph equation. The symmetry reductions thus obtained are compared with analogous results for the continuous telegraph equation. Some of these ‘continuous’ reductions are used to provide initial data for a numerical scheme which attempts to solve the corresponding discrete equation.

We consider the problem of neutral inclusions for two-dimensional conductivity and anti-plane elasticity. The neutral inclusion, when inserted in a matrix having a uniform field, does not disturb the field outside the inclusion. The inclusion consists of a core and a shell. We show that if the inclusion is neutral to two linearly independent fields, then the core and the shell are confocal ellipses.

We study the interactions between a nematic liquid crystal disclination and the surface of the half-space which bounds it. When strong anchoring conditions are applied on the boundary, the biaxial core of the disclination affects the repulsive force that tends to drive the disclination away from the surface. If we replace the strong boundary conditions with an anchoring potential, the surface-disclination interaction depends on the surface extrapolation length. In particular, the nematic may expel the disclination if the anchoring strength is below a critical value.

This paper is concerned with the invisibility cloaking in acoustic wave scattering from a new perspective. We are especially interested in achieving the invisibility cloaking by completely regular and isotropic mediums. It is shown that an interior transmission eigenvalue problem arises in our study, which is the one considered theoretically in Cakoni et al. (Transmission eigenvalues for inhomogeneous media containing obstacles, Inverse Problems and Imaging, 6 (2012), 373–398). Based on such an observation, we propose a cloaking scheme that takes a three-layer structure including a cloaked region, a lossy layer and a cloaking shell. The target medium in the cloaked region can be arbitrary but regular, whereas the mediums in the lossy layer and the cloaking shell are both regular and isotropic. We establish that if a certain non-transparency condition is satisfied, then there exists an infinite set of incident waves such that the cloaking device is nearly invisible under the corresponding wave interrogation. The set of waves is generated from the Herglotz approximation of the associated interior transmission eigenfunctions. We provide both theoretical and numerical justifications.

We present an algorithm for solving first-order ordinary differential equations by systematically determining symmetries of the form $[\xi=F(x),\, \eta=P(x)\,y+Q(x)]$, where $\xi\; \pa/\pa x + \eta\; \pa/\pa y$ is the symmetry generator. To these linear symmetries one can associate an ordinary differential equation class which embraces all first-order equations mappable into separable ones through linear transformations $\{t=f(x),\,u=p(x)\,y+q(x)\}$. This single class includes as members, for instance, 429 of the 552 solvable first-order examples of Kamke's [12] book. Concerning the solution of this class, a restriction on the algorithm being presented exists, only in the case of Riccati equations, for which linear symmetries always exist, but the algorithm will only partially succeed in finding them.

In this note we modify and extend the work of Howison & King [12] to describe the situation of flow around a wedge of arbitrary angle in a Hele-Shaw cell. An ingenious complex-variable method due to Polubarinova-Kochina is used to construct an explicit solution to the zero-surface tension problem.

In 1929, Zermelo proposed a probabilistic model for ranking by paired comparisons and showed that this model produces a unique ranking of the objects under consideration when the outcome matrix is irreducible. When the matrix is reducible, the model may yield only a partial ordering of the objects. In this paper, we analyse a natural extension of Zermelo's model resulting from a singular perturbation. We show that this extension produces a ranking for arbitrary (nonnegative) outcome matrices and retains several of the desirable properties of the original model. In addition, we discuss computational techniques and provide examples of their use.

This work investigates analytically, the use of piezoelectric tiles placed on stairways for vibrational energy harvesting – harnessing electrical power from natural vibrational phenomena – from pedestrian footfalls. While energy harvesting from pedestrian traffic along flat pathways has been studied in the linear regime and realised in practical applications, the greater amounts of energy naturally expended in traversing stairways suggest better prospects for harvesting. Considering the characteristics of two types of commercially available piezoelectric tiles – Navy Type III and Navy Type V – analytical models for the coupled electromechanical system are formulated. The harvesting potential of the tiles is then studied under conditions of both deterministic and carefully developed random excitation profiles for three distinct cases: linear, monostable nonlinear and an array of monostable nonlinear tiles on adjacent steps with linear coupling between them. The results indicate enhanced power output when the tiles are: (1) placed on stairways, (2) uncoupled and (3) subjected to excitation profiles with stochastic frequency. In addition, the Navy Type V tiles are seen to outperform the Navy Type III tiles. Finally, the strongly nonlinear regime outperforms the linear one suggesting that the realisation of commercially available piezoelectric tiles with appropriately tailored nonlinear characteristics will likely have a significant impact on energy harvesting from pedestrian traffic.

In a singularly perturbed limit, we analyse the existence and linear stability of steady-state hotspot solutions for an extension of the 1-D three-component reaction-diffusion (RD) system formulated and studied numerically in Jones et. al. [Math. Models. Meth. Appl. Sci., 20, Suppl., (2010)], which models urban crime with police intervention. In our extended RD model, the field variables are the attractiveness field for burglary, the criminal population density and the police population density. Our model includes a scalar parameter that determines the strength of the police drift towards maxima of the attractiveness field. For a special choice of this parameter, we recover the ‘cops-on-the-dots’ policing strategy of Jones et. al., where the police mimic the drift of the criminals towards maxima of the attractiveness field. For our extended model, the method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to construct 1-D steady-state hotspot patterns as well as to derive nonlocal eigenvalue problems (NLEPs) that characterise the linear stability of these hotspot steady states to ${\cal O}$(1) timescale instabilities. For a cops-on-the-dots policing strategy, we prove that a multi-hotspot steady state is linearly stable to synchronous perturbations of the hotspot amplitudes. Alternatively, for asynchronous perturbations of the hotspot amplitudes, a hybrid analytical–numerical method is used to construct linear stability phase diagrams in the police vs. criminal diffusivity parameter space. In one particular region of these phase diagrams, the hotspot steady states are shown to be unstable to asynchronous oscillatory instabilities in the hotspot amplitudes that arise from a Hopf bifurcation. Within the context of our model, this provides a parameter range where the effect of a cops-on-the-dots policing strategy is to only displace crime temporally between neighbouring spatial regions. Our hybrid approach to study the NLEPs combines rigorous spectral results with a numerical parameterisation of any Hopf bifurcation threshold. For the cops-on-the-dots policing strategy, our linear stability predictions for steady-state hotspot patterns are confirmed from full numerical PDE simulations of the three-component RD system.

We develop and test an intuitively simple dynamic network model to describe the type of time-varying connectivity structure present in many technological settings. The model assumes that nodes have an inherent hierarchy governing the emergence of new connections. This idea draws on newly established concepts in online human behaviour concerning the existence of discussion catalysts, who initiate long threads, and online leaders, who trigger feedback. We show that the model captures an important property found in e-mail and voice call data – ‘dynamic communicators’ with sufficient foresight or impact to generate effective links and having an influence that is grossly underestimated by static measures based on snaphots or aggregated data.

The work presents the analysis of the free boundary value problem related to the one-dimensional invasion model of new species in biofilm reactors. In the framework of continuum approach to mathematical modelling of biofilm growth, the problem consists of a system of non-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations governing the microbial species growth and a system of semi-linear elliptic partial differential equations describing the substrate trends. The model is completed with a system of elliptic partial differential equations governing the diffusion and reaction of planktonic cells, which are able to switch their mode of growth from planktonic to sessile when specific environmental conditions are found. Two systems of non-linear differential equations for the substrate and planktonic cells mass balance within the bulk liquid are also considered. The free boundary evolution is governed by a differential equation that accounts for detachment. The qualitative analysis is performed and a uniqueness and existence result is presented. Furthermore, two special models of biological and engineering interest are discussed numerically. The invasion of Anammox bacteria in a constituted biofilm inhabiting the deammonification units of the wastewater treatment plants is simulated. Numerical simulations are run to evaluate the influence of the colonization process on biofilm structure and activity.

We study surface tension effects for two-dimensional Darcy flow with a free boundary in a corner between two non-parallel walls. The analytic solution is based on two governing expressions constructed in an auxiliary parameter domain, namely a complex velocity and a derivative of the complex potential. These expressions admit a general solution for the problem in a corner geometry for the flow generated by a source/sink at the corner vertex or at infinity. We derive an integral equation in terms of the velocity modulus and angle at the free surface, determined by the dynamic boundary condition. A numerical procedure, used to solve the obtained system of equations, and numerical results concerning the effect of surface tension on the time evolution of the free boundary, are discussed.

The homogenization problem is considered for the equations of two-phase flow in porous media with a periodic or random small-scale structure of inhomogeneities. The capillary relation between saturation and the drop in pressures at microscales accounts for hysteresis and dynamic memory effects. Homogenized equations are derived, and convergence of solutions to the solution of the homogenized problem is proved. Properties of averaged capillary relation are described in the particular case of a two-component porous medium.

We propose unbalanced versions of the quantum mechanical version of optimal mass transport that is based on the Lindblad equation describing open quantum systems. One of them is a natural interpolation framework between matrices and matrix-valued measures via a quantum mechanical formulation of Fisher-Rao information and the matricial Wasserstein distance, and the second is an interpolation between Wasserstein distance and Frobenius norm. We also give analogous results for the matrix-valued density measures, i.e., we add a spatial dependency on the density matrices. This might extend the applications of the framework to interpolating matrix-valued densities/images with unequal masses.

Stability is among the most important concepts in dynamical systems. Local stability is well-studied, whereas determining the ‘global stability’ of a nonlinear system is very challenging. Over the last few decades, many different ideas have been developed to address this issue, primarily driven by concrete applications. In particular, several disciplines suggested a web of concepts under the headline ‘resilience’. Unfortunately, there are many different variants and explanations of resilience, and often, the definitions are left relatively vague, sometimes even deliberately. Yet, to allow for a structural development of a mathematical theory of resilience that can be used across different areas, one has to ensure precise starting definitions and provide a mathematical comparison of different resilience measures. In this work, we provide a systematic review of the most relevant indicators of resilience in the context of continuous dynamical systems, grouped according to their mathematical features. The indicators are also generalised to be applicable to any attractor. These steps are important to ensure a more reliable, quantitatively comparable and reproducible study of resilience in dynamical systems. Furthermore, we also develop a new concept of resilience against certain nonautonomous perturbations to demonstrate how one can naturally extend our framework. All the indicators are finally compared via the analysis of a classic scalar model from population dynamics to show that direct quantitative application-based comparisons are an immediate consequence of a detailed mathematical analysis.

We describe a specific measurement process that works well in practice for locating steel reinforcement bars in concrete. For the case that the total volume of these bars is small, we derive an approximate linear, but sufficiently accurate, mathematical model for which we can prove a uniqueness result.

We analyse the two-dimensional, gravitationally-driven spreading of fluid through a porous medium overlying a horizontal impermeable boundary from which fluid can drain freely at one end. Under the assumption that none of the intruding fluid is retained within the pores in the trail of the current, the motion of the current is described by the dipole self-similar solution of the first kind derived by Barenblatt and Zel'dovich (1957). We show that small perturbations of arbitrary shape imposed on this solution decay in time, indicating that the self-similar solution is linearly stable. We use the connection between the perturbation eigenfunctions and symmetry transformations of the self-similar solution to demonstrate that variables can always be specified in terms of which the rate of decay of the perturbations is maximised. Unsaturated flow can be modelled by assuming that a constant fraction of the fluid is retained within the pores by capillary action in the trail of the current. It has been shown (Barenblatt and Zel'dovich, 1998; Ingerman and Shvets, 1999) that in this case, the motion of the current is described by a self-similar solution of the second kind characterised by an anomalous exponent. We derive leading-order analytic expressions for the anomalous exponent and the self-similar quantities valid for small values of the fraction of fluid retained using direct asymptotic analysis and by using a novel application of the method of multiple scales. The latter offers a number of advantages and permits the evolution of the current to be clearly connected with its initial conditions in a way not possible with conventional approaches. We demonstrate that the theoretical predictions provided by these expressions are in excellent agreement with results from the numerical integration of the governing equations.

In this paper, a non-linear mathematical model is proposed and analysed to study the role of technology in combating social crimes in a dynamic population by considering immigration and emigration rates of susceptible population and criminals. The problem is modelled by considering five interacting variables, namely the density of susceptible population, the density of criminals, the density of removed (isolated) criminals, the density of crime burden and the level of technology used to control crime. The proposed model is analysed by using the stability theory of differential equation and simulation. The model analysis shows that the crime burden decreases considerably as the level of technology increases. It is noted that the crime in a society can be controlled almost completely if criminals from the general population are removed by intensive use of technology.

The ability to directly record human face-to-face interactions increasingly enables the development of detailed data-driven models for the spread of directly transmitted infectious diseases at the scale of individuals. Complete coverage of the contacts occurring in a population is however generally unattainable, due for instance to limited participation rates or experimental constraints in spatial coverage. Here, we study the impact of spatially constrained sampling on our ability to estimate the epidemic risk in a population using such detailed data-driven models. The epidemic risk is quantified by the epidemic threshold of the SIRS model for the propagation of communicable diseases, i.e. the critical value of disease transmissibility above which the disease turns endemic. We verify for both synthetic and empirical data of human interactions that the use of incomplete data sets due to spatial sampling leads to the underestimation of the epidemic risk. The bias is however smaller than the one obtained by uniformly sampling the same fraction of contacts: it depends non-linearly on the fraction of contacts that are recorded, and becomes negligible if this fraction is large enough. Moreover, it depends on the interplay between the timescales of population and spreading dynamics.
