We consider subshifts of the full shift of bi-infinite sequences with alphabet $\{ 0, 1, \ldots , n- 1\} $ defined by not allowing the sum of finite words to exceed a value depending on its length. These shifts we call bounded density shifts. We study these shifts in detail and make a comparison on the similarities to but also differences from the well-known $\beta $-shifts.

On the unit tangent bundle of a hyperbolic surface, we study the density of positive orbits $(h^s v)_{s\ge 0}$ under the horocyclic flow. More precisely, given a full orbit $(h^sv)_{s\in {\mathbb R}}$, we prove that under a weak assumption on the vector $v$, both half-orbits $(h^sv)_{s\ge 0}$ and $(h^s v)_{s\le 0}$ are simultaneously dense or not in the non-wandering set $\mathcal {E}$of the horocyclic flow. We give also a counterexample to this result when this assumption is not satisfied.

We prove that every non-singular Bernoulli shift is either zero-type or there is an equivalent invariant stationary product probability. We also give examples of a type III1Bernoulli shift and a Markovian flow which are power weakly mixing and zero-type.

The two-dimensional homogeneous Euclidean algorithm is the central motivation for the definition of the classical multidimensional continued fraction algorithms, such as Jacobi–Perron, Poincaré, Brun and Selmer algorithms. The Rauzy induction, a generalization of the Euclidean algorithm, is a key tool in the study of interval exchange transformations. Both maps are known to be dissipative and ergodic with respect to Lebesgue measure. Here we prove that they are exact.

We prove that commutator subgroups of topological full groups arising from minimal subshifts have exponential growth. We also prove that the measurable full group associated to the countable, measure-preserving, ergodic and hyperfinite equivalence relation is topologically generated by two elements.

For subshifts of finite type (SFTs), any equilibrium measure is Gibbs, as long as $f$ has $d$-summable variation. This is a theorem of Lanford and Ruelle. Conversely, a theorem of Dobrušin states that for strongly irreducible subshifts, shift-invariant Gibbs measures are equilibrium measures. Here we prove a generalization of the Lanford–Ruelle theorem: for all subshifts, any equilibrium measure for a function with $d$-summable variation is ‘topologically Gibbs’. This is a relaxed notion which coincides with the usual notion of a Gibbs measure for SFTs. In the second part of the paper, we study Gibbs and equilibrium measures for some interesting families of subshifts: $\beta $-shifts, Dyck shifts and Kalikow-type shifts (defined below). In all of these cases, a Lanford–Ruelle-type theorem holds. For each of these families, we provide a specific proof of the result.

We investigate rational maps with period-one and period-two cluster cycles. Given the definition of a cluster, we show that, in the case where the degree is $d$ and the cluster is fixed, the Thurston class of a rational map is fixed by the combinatorial rotation number $\rho $ and the critical displacement $\delta $of the cluster cycle. The same result will also be proved in the case where the rational map is quadratic and has a period-two cluster cycle, and we will also show that the statement is no longer true in the higher-degree case.

We compute the helicity of a vector field preserving a regular contact form on a closed three-dimensional manifold, and improve results of Gambaudo and Ghys [Enlacements asymptotiques. Topology 36(6) (1997), 1355–1379] relating the helicity of the suspension of a surface isotopy to the Calabi invariant of the isotopy. Based on these results, we provide positive answers to two questions posed by Arnold in [The asymptotic Hopf invariant and its applications. Selecta Math. Soviet. 5(4) (1986), 327–345]. In the presence of a regular contact form that is also preserved, the helicity extends to an invariant of an isotopy of volume-preserving homeomorphisms, and is invariant under conjugation by volume-preserving homeomorphisms. A similar statement also holds for suspensions of surface isotopies and surface diffeomorphisms. This requires the techniques of topological Hamiltonian and contact dynamics developed by Banyaga and Spaeth [On the uniqueness of generating Hamiltonians for topological strictly contact isotopies. Moreover, we generalize an example of Furstenberg [Strict ergodicity and transformation of the torus. Amer. J. Math. 83 (1961), 573–601] on topologically conjugate but not $C^1$-conjugate area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the two-torus to trivial $T^2$-bundles, and construct examples of Hamiltonian and contact vector fields that are topologically conjugate but not $C^1$-conjugate. Higher-dimensional helicities are considered briefly at the end of the paper.

We characterize Maass cusp forms for any cofinite Hecke triangle group as 1-eigenfunctions of appropriate regularity of a transfer operator family. This transfer operator family is associated to a certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on the orbifold arising as the orbit space of the action of the Hecke triangle group on the hyperbolic plane. Moreover, we show that the Selberg zeta function is the Fredholm determinant of the transfer operator family associated to an acceleration of this symbolic dynamics.

We give an almost self-contained group theoretic proof of Furstenberg’s structure theorem as generalized by Ellis: each minimal compact distal flow is the result of a transfinite sequence of equicontinuous extensions, and their limits, starting from a flow consisting of a singleton. The groups that we use are CHART groups, and their basic properties are recalled at the beginning of the paper.

For every ergodic hyperbolic measure ω of a C1+α diffeomorphism, there is an ω-full-measure set $\tilde {\Lambda }$ (the union of $\tilde \Lambda _l=\mathrm {supp}( \omega |_{\Lambda _{l}})$, the support sets of ω on each Pesin block Λl, l=1,2,…) such that every non-empty, compact and connected subset $V\subseteq \mathrm {Closure}(\mathcal {M}_{\mathrm {inv}}(\tilde \Lambda ))$ coincides with Vf(x), where $\mathcal {M}_{\mathrm {inv}}(\tilde {\Lambda })$ denotes the space of invariant measures supported on $\tilde {\Lambda }$ and Vf(x) denotes the accumulation set of time averages of Dirac measures supported at one orbit of some point x. For each fixed set V, the points with the above property are dense in the support supp (ω) . In particular, points satisfying $V_f(x)=\mathrm {Closure}(\mathcal {M}_{\mathrm {inv}}(\tilde \Lambda ))$ are dense in supp (ω) . Moreover, if supp (ω) is isolated, the points satisfying $V_f(x)\supseteq \mathrm {Closure}(\mathcal {M}_{\mathrm {inv}}(\tilde \Lambda ))$ form a residual subset of supp (ω) . These extend results of K. Sigmund [On dynamical systems with the specification property. Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 190 (1974), 285–299] (see also M. Denker, C. Grillenberger and K. Sigmund [Ergodic Theory on Compact Spaces (Lecture Notes in Mathematics, 527). Springer, Berlin, Ch. 21]) from the uniformly hyperbolic case to the non-uniformly hyperbolic case. As a corollary, irregular + points form a residual set of supp (ω) .

In 1995, Hill and Velani introduced the ‘shrinking targets’ theory. Given a dynamical system ([0,1],T), they investigated the Hausdorff dimension of sets of points whose orbits are close to some fixed point. In this paper, we study the sets of points well approximated by orbits {Tnx}n≥0, where Tis an expanding Markov map with a finite partition supported by [0,1]. The dimensions of these sets are described using the multifractal properties of invariant Gibbs measures.

Inspired by Franks’ classification of irreducible shifts of finite type, we provide a short list of allowed moves on graphs that preserve the stable isomorphism class of the associated $C^*$-algebras. We show that if two graphs have stably isomorphic and simple unital algebras then we can use these moves to transform one into the other.

Michael Handel proved in [A fixed-point theorem for planar homeomorphisms. Topology38 (1999), 235–264] the existence of a fixed point for an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the open unit disk that can be extended to the closed disk, provided that it has points whose orbits form an oriented cycle of links at infinity. Later, Patrice Le Calvez gave a different proof of this theorem based only on Brouwer theory and plane topology arguments in [Une nouvelle preuve du théorème de point fixe de Handel. Geom. Topol.10(2006), 2299–2349]. These methods improved the result by proving the existence of a simple closed curve of index 1. We give a new, simpler proof of this improved version of the theorem and generalize it to non-oriented cycles of links at infinity.

We show that the escaping sets and the Julia sets of bounded-type transcendental entire functions of order ρ become ‘smaller’ as ρ→∞. More precisely, their Hausdorff measures are infinite with respect to the gauge function hγ(t)=t2g(1/t)γ, where g is the inverse of a linearizer of some exponential map and γ≥(log ρ(f)+K1)/c, but for ρ large enough, there exists a function fρ of bounded type with order ρ such that the Hausdorff measures of the escaping set and the Julia set of fρ with respect to hγ′ are zero whenever γ′ ≤(log ρ−K2)/c.

This paper contains results on the geometric and ergodic properties of a class of strange attractors introduced by Wang and Young [Towards a theory of rank one attractors. Ann. of Math. (2) 167 (2008), 349–480]. These attractors can live in phase spaces of any dimension, and have been shown to arise naturally in differential equations that model several commonly occurring phenomena. Dynamically, such systems are chaotic; they have controlled non-uniform hyperbolicity with exactly one unstable direction, hence the name rank-one. In this paper we prove theorems on their Lyapunov exponents, Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen (SRB) measures, basins of attraction, and statistics of time series, including central limit theorems, exponential correlation decay and large deviations. We also present results on their global geometric and combinatorial structures, symbolic coding and periodic points. In short, we build a dynamical profile for this class of dynamical systems, proving that these systems exhibit many of the characteristics normally associated with ‘strange attractors’.
