We formulate an explicit conjecture for the leading term at s=1 of the equivariant Dedekind zeta-function that is associated to a Galois extension of number fields. We show that this conjecture refines well-known conjectures of Stark and Chinburg, and we use the functional equation of the zeta-function to compare it to a natural conjecture for the leading term at s=0.

We develop a language that makes the analogy between geometry and arithmetic more transparent. In this language there exists a base field $\mathbb{F}$, ‘the field with one element’; there is a fully faithful functor from commutative rings to $\mathbb{F}$-rings; there is the notion of the $\mathbb{F}$-ring of integers of a real or complex prime of a number field $K$ analogous to the $p$-adic integers, and there is a compactification of $\operatorname{Spec}O_K$; there is a notion of tensor product of $\mathbb{F}$-rings giving the product of $\mathbb{F}$-schemes; in particular there is the arithmetical surface $\operatorname{Spec} O_K\times\operatorname{Spec} O_K$, the product taken over $\mathbb{F}$.

Let $X$ be a smooth variety over a field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, and let $\mathcal{E}$ be an overconvergent isocrystal on $X$. We establish a criterion for the existence of a ‘canonical logarithmic extension’ of $\mathcal{E}$ to a smooth compactification $\overline{X}$ of $X$ whose complement is a strict normal crossings divisor. We also obtain some related results, including a form of Zariski–Nagata purity for isocrystals.

We present relations between cycles with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence on the Jacobian of a curve. These relations depend on the linear systems that the curve admits. They are obtained in the tautological ring, the smallest subspace containing (an embedding of) the curve and closed under the basic operations of intersection, Pontryagin product and the pullback and pushdown induced by homotheties.

In the complex domain, one can integrate (solve) holomorphic ordinary differential equations (ODEs) near a non-singular point. We study the existence of solutions in the case of a positive characteristic base field k which is complete with respect to a non-Archimedean absolute value. ODEs are substituted by modules over a ring of analytic functions endowed with an action of all differential operators. The monodromy groups associated to the corresponding category are computed.

Various $p$-adic versions of Littlewood's conjecture are investigated, generalizing a set-up considered recently by de Mathan and Teulié. In many cases it is shown that the sets of exceptions to these conjectures have Hausdorff dimension zero. The proof follows the measure ridigity approach of Einsiedler, Katok and Lindenstrauss.

Let $G$ be a finite group acting freely on a smooth projective scheme $X$ over a locally compact field of characteristic 0. We show that the $\varepsilon_0$-constants associated to symplectic representations $V$ of $G$ and the action of $G$ on $X$ may be determined from Pfaffian invariants associated to duality pairings on Hodge cohomology. We also use such Pfaffian invariants, along with equivariant Arakelov Euler characteristics, to determine hermitian Euler characteristics associated to tame actions of finite groups on regular projective schemes over $\mathbb{Z}$.

Over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$, we construct a ‘Witt vector cohomology with compact supports’ for separated $k$-schemes of finite type, extending (after tensorization with ${\mathbb Q}$) the classical theory for proper $k$-schemes. We define a canonical morphism from rigid cohomology with compact supports to Witt vector cohomology with compact supports, and we prove that it provides an identification between the latter and the slope ${<}1$ part of the former. Over a finite field, this allows one to compute congruences for the number of rational points in special examples. In particular, the congruence modulo the cardinality of the finite field of the number of rational points of a theta divisor on an abelian variety does not depend on the choice of the theta divisor. This answers positively a question by J.-P. Serre.

Using a result of E. Viehweg, we study the behavior of the log canonical thresholds of divisors along free rational curves. This leads to a bound on the log canonical thresholds of divisors in terms of the degree of free rational curves on Fano manifolds of Picard number 1.

By using the Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch theorem we derive cycle relations modulo algebraic equivalence in the Jacobian of a curve. The relations generalize the relations found by Colombo and van Geemen and are analogous to but simpler than the relations recently found by Herbaut. In an appendix by Zagier, it is shown that these sets of relations are equivalent.

Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field with uniformizer $\pi$. We consider $G={\rm GL}_{2}(F)/\pi$ and $I(1)$ the pro-$p$-Iwahori subgroup of $G$. The exploration of the smooth mod $p$ representations of $G$ motivates the study of the space of functions with values in $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ and compact support in the set of right cosets $I(1)\backslash G$. We show that this universal module is flat over the pro-$p$-Hecke algebra if and only if the cardinal of the residue field of $F$ is equal to $p$.

Heitmann’s proof of the direct summand conjecture has opened a new approach to the study of homological conjectures in mixed characteristic. Inspired by his work and by the methods of almost ring theory, we discuss a normalized length for certain torsion modules, which was introduced by Faltings. Using the normalized length and the Frobenius map, we prove some results of local cohomology for local rings in mixed characteristic, which has an immediate implication for the subject of splinters studied by Singh.

A complex projective manifold is said to be weakly special if none of its finite étale covers has a dominant rational map to a positive-dimensional manifold of general type. Weakly special manifolds are conjectured by Harris and Tschinkel (Rational points on quartics, Duke Math. J. 104 (2000), 477–500) to be potentially dense if defined over a number field. In a previous paper by F. Campana (Special varieties, orbifolds and classification theory, Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 54 (2004), 499–665), the stronger notion of special (complex projective) manifolds was introduced. These are conjectured in (9.20) of that work to be exactly the potentially dense manifolds (when defined over a number field). The two notions of specialness and weak-specialness coincide up to dimension 2, but differ from dimension 3 on, as shown by examples $X$ constructed by Bogomolov and Tschinkel (Special elliptic fibrations, in Proc. Fanu Conf., Torino, 2003, ed. A. Conte), answering a question raised in Campana's paper. These examples should thus be potentially dense, according to the first conjecture, but should not be so, according to the second conjecture. The present techniques of arithmetic geometry do not seem to be able to decide between these two conflicting conjectures. So, instead of this, we investigate the more tractable hyperbolic aspects of the examples of Bogomolov and Tschinkel, and show that for certain manifolds $X$, the behaviour of entire transcendental curves is that given in Conjecture 9.16, p. 618 of Campana's above-mentioned work. More precisely, the image of any holomorphic map from ${\mathbb{C}}$ to $X$ is contained either in some fibre of the unique elliptic fibration on $X$, or in some fixed divisor of $X$. This is consistent with the standard links (Lang and Vojta for varieties of general type, the first author's previous work in general) expected between the hyperbolic and arithmetic behaviour of projective varieties in cases where the second conjecture (stated by Campana) holds. Conversely, if the conjecture stated by Harris and Tschinkel is true, these expected links between arithmetics and complex hyperbolicity should fail to hold on these examples already.

Let $X$ be a minuscule Schubert variety. In this paper, we associate a quiver with $X$ and use the combinatorics of this quiver to describe all relative minimal models $\widehat{\pi}:{\widehat{X}}\to X$. We prove that all the morphisms $\widehat{\pi}$ are small and give a combinatorial criterion for $\widehat{X}$ to be smooth and thus a small resolution of $X$. We describe in this way all small resolutions of $X$. As another application of this description of relative minimal models, we obtain the following more intrinsic statement of the main result of Perrin, J. Algebra 294 (2005), 431–462. Let $\alpha\in A_1(X)$ be an effective 1-cycle class. Then the irreducible components of the scheme Hom$_{\alpha}(p^1,X)$ of morphisms from $\mathbb{P}^1$ to $X$ and of class $\alpha$ are indexed by the set: ${\mathfrak{ne}}(\alpha)=\{\beta\in A_1(\widehat{X}) \mid \beta$ is effective and $\widehat{\pi}_*\beta=\alpha\}$ which is independent of the choice of a relative minimal model $\widehat{X}$ of $X$.

The morphic Abel–Jacobi map is the analogue of the classical Abel–Jacobi map one obtains by using Lawson and morphic (co)homology in place of the usual singular (co)homology. It thus gives a map from the group of $r$-cycles on a complex variety that are algebraically equivalent to zero to a certain ‘Jacobian’ built from the Lawson homology groups viewed as inductive limits of mixed Hodge structures. In this paper, we define the morphic Abel–Jacobi map, establish its foundational properties, and then apply these results to the study of algebraic cycles. In particular, we show the classical Abel–Jacobi map (when restricted to cycles algebraically equivalent to zero) factors through the morphic version, and show that the morphic version detects cycles that cannot be detected by its classical counterpart; that is, we give examples of cycles in the kernel of the classical Abel–Jacobi map that are not in the kernel of the morphic version. We also investigate the behavior of the morphic Abel–Jacobi map on the torsion subgroup of the Chow group of cycles algebraically equivalent to zero modulo rational equivalence.

We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported $\ell$-adic étale cohomology groups of rigid spaces over a local field. We prove that the alternating sum of the traces of the action is an integer and is independent of $\ell$ when either the rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. We modify the argument of T. Saito to prove a result on $\ell$-independence for nearby cycle cohomology, which leads to our $\ell$-independence result for smooth rigid spaces. In the general case, we use the finiteness theorem of Huber, which requires the restriction on the characteristic of the base field.

We study the dependence of a cluster algebra on the choice of coefficients. We write general formulas expressing the cluster variables in any cluster algebra in terms of the initial data; these formulas involve a family of polynomials associated with a particular choice of ‘principal’ coefficients. We show that the exchange graph of a cluster algebra with principal coefficients covers the exchange graph of any cluster algebra with the same exchange matrix. We investigate two families of parameterizations of cluster monomials by lattice points, determined, respectively, by the denominators of their Laurent expansions and by certain multi-gradings in cluster algebras with principal coefficients. The properties of these parameterizations, some proven and some conjectural, suggest links to duality conjectures of Fock and Goncharov. The coefficient dynamics leads to a natural generalization of Zamolodchikov's $Y$-systems. We establish a Laurent phenomenon for such $Y$-systems, previously known in finite type only, and sharpen the periodicity result from an earlier paper. For cluster algebras of finite type, we identify a canonical ‘universal’ choice of coefficients such that an arbitrary cluster algebra can be obtained from the universal one (of the same type) by an appropriate specialization of coefficients.

The classical Fourier–Mukai duality establishes an equivalence of categories between the derived categories of sheaves on dual complex tori. In this article we show that this equivalence extends to an equivalence between two dual objects. Both of these are generalized deformations of the complex tori. In one case, a complex torus is deformed formally in a non-commutative direction specified by a holomorphic Poisson structure. In the other, the dual complex torus is deformed in a $B$-field direction to a formal gerbe. We show that these two deformations are Fourier–Mukai equivalent.

Let $\mathfrak{n}$ be a maximal nilpotent subalgebra of a complex symmetric Kac–Moody Lie algebra. Lusztig has introduced a basis of $U(\mathfrak{n})$ called the semicanonical basis, whose elements can be seen as certain constructible functions on varieties of nilpotent modules over a preprojective algebra of the same type as $\mathfrak{n}$. We prove a formula for the product of two elements of the dual of this semicanonical basis, and more generally for the product of two evaluation forms associated to arbitrary modules over the preprojective algebra. This formula plays an important rôle in our work on the relationship between semicanonical bases, representation theory of preprojective algebras, and Fomin and Zelevinsky's theory of cluster algebras. It was inspired by recent results of Caldero and Keller.

For each non-negative integer n we define the nth Nash blowup of an algebraic variety, and call them all higher Nash blowups. When n=1, it coincides with the classical Nash blowup. We study higher Nash blowups of curves in detail and prove that any curve in characteristic zero can be desingularized by its nth Nash blowup with n large enough. Moreover, we completely determine for which n the nth Nash blowup of an analytically irreducible curve singularity in characteristic zero is normal, in terms of the associated numerical monoid.
