For random trees T generated by the binary search tree algorithm from uniformly distributed input we consider the subtree size profile, which maps k ∈ ℕ to the number of nodes in T that root a subtree of size k. Complementing earlier work by Devroye, by Feng, Mahmoud and Panholzer, and by Fuchs, we obtain results for the range of small k-values and the range of k-values proportional to the size n of T. In both cases emphasis is on the process view, i.e., the joint distributions for several k-values. We also show that the dynamics of the tree sequence lead to a qualitative difference between the asymptotic behaviour of the lower and the upper end of the profile.

We introduce and prove a family of inequalities satisfied by the Whitney rank generating function of a matroid in the positive quadrant of ℝ2. These can be interpreted as correlation inequalities at those points where the polynomial is known to count the number of independent sets, bases or spanning sets of the matroid. Our proofs also introduce an idea of rank dominating bijections in matroids, which are then used to obtain some simple extensions of the submodular property of matroid ranks.

For a directed graph G without loops or parallel edges, let β(G) denote the size of the smallest feedback arc set, i.e., the smallest subset X ⊂ E(G) such that G ∖ X has no directed cycles. Let γ(G) be the number of unordered pairs of vertices of G which are not adjacent. We prove that every directed graph whose shortest directed cycle has length at least r ≥ 4 satisfies β(G) ≤ cγ(G)/r2, where c is an absolute constant. This is tight up to the constant factor and extends a result of Chudnovsky, Seymour and Sullivan.

This result can also be used to answer a question of Yuster concerning almost given length cycles in digraphs. We show that for any fixed 0 < θ < 1/2 and sufficiently large n, if G is a digraph with n vertices and β(G) ≥ θn2, then for any 0 ≤ m ≤ θn − o(n) it contains a directed cycle whose length is between m and m + 6θ−1/2. Moreover, there is a constant C such that either G contains directed cycles of every length between C and θn − o(n) or it is close to a digraph G′ with a simple structure: every strong component of G′ is periodic. These results are also tight up to the constant factors.

We consider the t-improper chromatic number of the Erdős–Rényi random graph Gn,p. The t-improper chromatic number χt(G) is the smallest number of colours needed in a colouring of the vertices in which each colour class induces a subgraph of maximum degree at most t. If t = 0, then this is the usual notion of proper colouring. When the edge probability p is constant, we provide a detailed description of the asymptotic behaviour of χt(Gn,p) over the range of choices for the growth of t = t(n).

We study the diameter of 1, the largest component of the Erdős–Rényi random graph (n, p) in the emerging supercritical phase, i.e., for p = where ε3n → ∞ and ε = o(1). This parameter was extensively studied for fixed ε > 0, yet results for ε = o(1) outside the critical window were only obtained very recently. Prior to this work, Riordan and Wormald gave precise estimates on the diameter; however, these did not cover the entire supercritical regime (namely, when ε3n → ∞ arbitrarily slowly). Łuczak and Seierstad estimated its order throughout this regime, yet their upper and lower bounds differed by a factor of .

We show that throughout the emerging supercritical phase, i.e., for any ε = o(1) with ε3n → ∞, the diameter of 1 is with high probability asymptotic to D(ε, n) = (3/ε)log(ε3n). This constitutes the first proof of the asymptotics of the diameter valid throughout this phase. The proof relies on a recent structure result for the supercritical giant component, which reduces the problem of estimating distances between its vertices to the study of passage times in first-passage percolation. The main advantage of our method is its flexibility. It also implies that in the emerging supercritical phase the diameter of the 2-core of 1 is w.h.p. asymptotic to , and the maximal distance in 1 between any pair of kernel vertices is w.h.p. asymptotic to .

The notion of tree entropy was introduced by the author as a normalized limit of the number of spanning trees in finite graphs, but is defined on random infinite rooted graphs. We give some new expressions for tree entropy; one uses Fuglede–Kadison determinants, while another uses effective resistance. We use the latter to prove that tree entropy respects stochastic domination. We also prove that tree entropy is non-negative in the unweighted case, a special case of which establishes Lück's Determinant Conjecture for Cayley-graph Laplacians. We use techniques from the theory of operators affiliated to von Neumann algebras.

Thomas conjectured that there is an absolute constant c such that for every proper minor-closed class of graphs, there is a polynomial-time algorithm that can colour every G ∈ with at most χ(G) + c colours. We introduce a parameter ρ(), called the degenerate value of , which is defined to be the smallest r such that every G ∈ can be vertex-bipartitioned into a part of bounded tree-width (the bound depending only on ), and a part that is r-degenerate. Although the existence of one global bound for the degenerate values of all proper minor-closed classes would imply Thomas's conjecture, we prove that the values ρ() can be made arbitrarily large. The problem lies in the clique sum operation. As our main result, we show that excluding a planar graph with a fixed number of apex vertices gives rise to a minor-closed class with small degenerate value. As corollaries, we obtain that (i) the degenerate value of every class of graphs of bounded local tree-width is at most 6, and (ii) the degenerate value of the class of Kn-minor-free graphs is at most n + 1. These results give rise to P-time approximation algorithms for colouring any graph in these classes within an error of at most 7 and n + 2 of its chromatic number, respectively.

We investigate decompositions of a graph into a small number of low-diameter subgraphs. Let P(n, ε, d) be the smallest k such that every graph G = (V, E) on n vertices has an edge partition E = E0 ∪ E1 ∪ ⋅⋅⋅ ∪ Ek such that |E0| ≤ εn2, and for all 1 ≤ i ≤ k the diameter of the subgraph spanned by Ei is at most d. Using Szemerédi's regularity lemma, Polcyn and Ruciński showed that P(n, ε, 4) is bounded above by a constant depending only on ε. This shows that every dense graph can be partitioned into a small number of ‘small worlds’ provided that a few edges can be ignored. Improving on their result, we determine P(n, ε, d) within an absolute constant factor, showing that P(n, ε, 2) = Θ(n) is unbounded for ε < 1/4, P(n, ε, 3) = Θ(1/ε2) for ε > n−1/2 and P(n, ε, 4) = Θ(1/ε) for ε > n−1. We also prove that if G has large minimum degree, all the edges of G can be covered by a small number of low-diameter subgraphs. Finally, we extend some of these results to hypergraphs, improving earlier work of Polcyn, Rödl, Ruciński and Szemerédi.

We derive area limit laws for the various symmetry classes of staircase polygons on the square lattice, in a uniform ensemble where, for fixed perimeter, each polygon occurs with the same probability. This complements a previous study by Leroux and Rassart, where explicit expressions for the area and perimeter generating functions of these classes have been derived.

In this work we study edge weights for two specific families of increasing trees, which include binary increasing trees and plane-oriented recursive trees as special instances, where plane-oriented recursive trees serve as a combinatorial model of scale-free random trees given by the m = 1 case of the Barabási–Albert model. An edge e = (k, l), connecting the nodes labelled k and l, respectively, in an increasing tree, is associated with the weight we = |k − l|. We are interested in the distribution of the number of edges with a fixed edge weight j in a random generalized plane-oriented recursive tree or random d-ary increasing tree. We provide exact formulas for expectation and variance and prove a normal limit law for this quantity. A combinatorial approach is also presented and applied to a related parameter, the maximum edge weight.

Ordering constraints are formally analogous to instances of the satisfiability problem in conjunctive normal form, but instead of a boolean assignment we consider a linear ordering of the variables in question. A clause becomes true given a linear ordering if and only if the relative ordering of its variables obeys the constraint considered.

The naturally arising satisfiability problems are NP-complete for many types of constraints. We look at random ordering constraints. Previous work of the author shows that there is a sharp unsatisfiability threshold for certain types of constraints. The value of the threshold, however, is essentially undetermined. We pursue the problem of approximating the precise value of the threshold. We show that random instances of the betweenness constraint are satisfiable with high probability if the number of randomly picked clauses is ≤0.92n, where n is the number of variables considered. This improves the previous bound, which is <0.82n random clauses. The proof is based on a binary relaxation of the betweenness constraint and involves some ideas not used before in the area of random ordering constraints.

The number of closed tree-like walks in a graph is closely related to the moments of the roots of the matching polynomial for the graph. Thus, by counting these walks up to a given length it is possible to find approximations for the matching polynomial. This approach has been used in two separate problems involving asymptotic enumerations of 1-factorizations of regular graphs. Nevertheless, a systematic way to count the required walks had not previously been found.

In this paper we give an algorithm to count closed tree-like walks in a regular graph up to a given length. For small m, this provides expressions for the number of m-matchings in the graph in terms of the numbers of copies of certain small subgraphs that appear in the graph. The simplest of these expressions were already known, having been rediscovered by numerous authors using ad hoc methods. We offer the first general method for producing the expressions. We also find generating functions that isolate the contribution from the simplest kind of subgraph – namely a single cycle of arbitrary length.

Let c(G) be the smallest number of edges we have to test in order to determine an unknown acyclic orientation of the given graph G in the worst case. For example, if G is the complete graph on n vertices, then c(G) is the smallest number of comparisons needed to sort n numbers.

We prove that c(G) ≤ (1/4 + o(1))n2 for any graph G on n vertices, answering in the affirmative a question of Aigner, Triesch and Tuza [Discrete Mathematics144 (1995) 3–10]. Also, we show that, for every ϵ > 0, it is NP-hard to approximate the parameter c(G) within a multiplicative factor 74/73 − ϵ.

We consider first-passage percolation on a ladder, i.e., the graph ℕ × {0, 1}, where nodes at distance 1 are joined by an edge, and the times are exponentially i.i.d. with mean 1. We find an appropriate Markov chain to calculate an explicit expression for the time constant whose numerical value is ≈0.6827. This time constant is the long-term average inverse speed of the process. We also calculate the average residual time.

We show that the number of independent sets in an N-vertex, d-regular graph is at most (2d+1 − 1)N/2d, where the bound is sharp for a disjoint union of complete d-regular bipartite graphs. This settles a conjecture of Alon in 1991 and Kahn in 2001. Kahn proved the bound when the graph is assumed to be bipartite. We give a short proof that reduces the general case to the bipartite case. Our method also works for a weighted generalization, i.e., an upper bound for the independence polynomial of a regular graph.

Let G = (G, +) be an additive group. The sumset theory of Plünnecke and Ruzsa gives several relations between the size of sumsets A + B of finite sets A, B, and related objects such as iterated sumsets kA and difference sets A − B, while the inverse sumset theory of Freiman, Ruzsa, and others characterizes those finite sets A for which A + A is small. In this paper we establish analogous results in which the finite set A ⊂ G is replaced by a discrete random variable X taking values in G, and the cardinality |A| is replaced by the Shannon entropy H(X). In particular, we classify those random variables X which have small doubling in the sense that H(X1 + X2) = H(X) + O(1) when X1, X2 are independent copies of X, by showing that they factorize as X = U + Z, where U is uniformly distributed on a coset progression of bounded rank, and H(Z) = O(1).

When G is torsion-free, we also establish the sharp lower bound , where o(1) goes to zero as H(X) → ∞.

The interlace polynomials introduced by Arratia, Bollobás and Sorkin extend to invariants of graphs with vertex weights, and these weighted interlace polynomials have several novel properties. One novel property is a version of the fundamental three-term formula that lacks the last term. It follows that interlace polynomial computations can be represented by binary trees rather than mixed binary–ternary trees. Binary computation trees provide a description of q(G) that is analogous to the activities description of the Tutte polynomial. If G is a tree or forest then these ‘algorithmic activities’ are associated with a certain kind of independent set in G. Three other novel properties are weighted pendant-twin reductions, which involve removing certain kinds of vertices from a graph and adjusting the weights of the remaining vertices in such a way that the interlace polynomials are unchanged. These reductions allow for smaller computation trees as they eliminate some branches. If a graph can be completely analysed using pendant-twin reductions, then its interlace polynomial can be calculated in polynomial time. An intuitively pleasing property is that graphs which can be constructed through graph substitutions have vertex-weighted interlace polynomials which can be obtained through algebraic substitutions.

Let G be a fixed connected multigraph with no loops. A random n-lift of G is obtained by replacing each vertex of G by a set of n vertices (where these sets are pairwise disjoint) and replacing each edge by a randomly chosen perfect matching between the n-sets corresponding to the endpoints of the edge. Let XG be the number of perfect matchings in a random lift of G. We study the distribution of XG in the limit as n tends to infinity, using the small subgraph conditioning method.

We present several results including an asymptotic formula for the expectation of XG when G is d-regular, d ≥ 3. The interaction of perfect matchings with short cycles in random lifts of regular multigraphs is also analysed. Partial calculations are performed for the second moment of XG, with full details given for two example multigraphs, including the complete graph K4.

To assist in our calculations we provide a theorem for estimating a summation over multiple dimensions using Laplace's method. This result is phrased as a summation over lattice points, and may prove useful in future applications.
