It was the beleaguered Sydney Morning Herald that started my concern about child statistical abuse in Australia A small paragraph in “Column 8” pointed out that a program on the similarly beleaguered ABC had claimed that 38 percent of Australians die of heart disease each year. Then “Column 8” discovered something called the cholesterol check card, issued by the Better Health Screening Service, which claimed that 50 percent of us die from cardiovascular disease each year. What, asked “Column 8”, will the Better Health Screening Service do after two years when there is no-one left in Australia’?

What you see depends on where you stand. It is all a question of our perspective, our world view. Attempting to understand other people's perspectives is said to be a mark of adulthood.
Journalists, on the other hand, are often asked to ensure that a narrow and local interest is catered for in stories. Thus we see stories of disasters where hundreds have been killed overseas, in a plane crash for example, and the cryptic sentence “No Australians were believed to be on board” appears in the text.

Alys Key Family Care is a Family Support agency that aims to facilitate change within families experiencing severe problems in rearing their children, so that parents are empowered to take control and responsibility for rearing their children adequately. The Centre was established by the Children's Protection Society (after the Society ceased to run the Victorian welfare-based Protective Service) as a 3-year Demonstration Project with a built-in research component. The research has not only enabled testing of the overall effectiveness of the service in meeting its stated goals, but has created a climate of questioning of practice within the area of Family Support.
