The international economic order, especially in the field of international trade law, is navigating uncertain times again. The current cycle engenders a fundamental remaking of the global trading regime, among others. In the face of geopolitical tensions, tariff wars, rise of power based economic relations, and economic nationalism, the relevance of our institutions of international economic governance have increasingly been diminished. Even so, the roles of trade agreements – multilateral, plurilateral, and regional – in this fast evolving socio-economic and legal order have come under closer scrutiny. A reinforced but stark realization is that the international economic order as we know it may no longer be fit for the contemporary challenges that we are confront. The key question is what might the way forward look like? Proffering the way forward out of a deeply divided global order with increasing disdain for the rule of law is a difficult task.

The panelists in this inaugural webinar of the Canadian Yearbook of International Law will focus on some of these emerging questions. Comprising of academia, practice and policy experts, our panelists seek to shed light on some of the nagging issues of our day in search of a way forward.
