While making a study of the aquatic fauna of Waddell Creek, Rancho del Oso, California, during the summer of 1928, the author collected, along with nymphs of several genera of Ephemerids, nymphs of Ephemerella hecuba Eaton figured by Eaton in his Revisional Monograph, page 133, Plate 40, figures 1-17, and by Needham in the Annals of the Entomological Society of America, volume 20, page 115, and in Bulletin 201, Utah Experiment Station, page 9. Inasmuch as the author was unable to find descriptions of the male and female imagoes in the literature he reared out adults, both male and female, in order to secure material for description. Subimagoes appeared July 11 and the imagoes issued July 12.

Male blackish, closely resembling latipennis Zett.; head black, parafrontals, parafacials, and cheeks velvety whitish pruinescent ; antennae and palpi black. Thorax lightly grayish pruinose, subshining, scutellum viewed from behind grayish (not blackish), mesonotum with three brownish vittae, and lateral areas considerably infuscated. Abdomen whitish pruinose, pearlaceous, with dark reflections; dorsocentral vitta black, each tergal portion, when viewed from behind, slightly broadened cephalad; tergal incisures not evident; hypopygium with basal sclerites black, shining, the caudal (prebasal) sclerite thinly grayish pollinose not glossy. Legs black, subsliining. Wings tinged with yellow, especially basad; calyptrae and halteres yellowish.

This beautiful little aphid was colllected in 1927, by Messrs. J. Stanley and H. Hulbert, and further material was also received from Mr. W. Downes from an American elm growing in the grounds of the Empress Hotel, Victoria, B. C.

Having read of mites swarming in the nests of various birds and being desirous of acquiring information on the subject, I examined the nest of a house wren, Troglodytes aedon aedon, Vieillot, at Sioux City, Iowa, during the summer of 1927. The young birds had the day before left the nest which was built in a small box located on a pillar of my front porch. When the box was opened and the twigs removed, there was a residue of gray powder in the box, amounting to six or seven drams. The microscope showed this powder to be composed of a seething mass of small mites in all stages of development, in countless numbers. Dr. H. E. Ewing, of the Bureau of Entomology, later pronounced them to be the common chicken mite. Dermanyssus gallinae L.

I have in various earlier papers dealt with species of the genus Ornithoica. In doing so, while endeavoring to elucidate these species, I have succeeded at least in adding my full portion of errors to the existing literature. It is the intention here to call attention to these errors and to correct them as far as may be on he basis of the additional information now available.

While making an “auto” trip around the Gaspé Peninsula (Province of Quebec) in the summer of 1928. I encountered a swarm of dark-winged insects which I at first took to be may flies “dancing” over a bridge across a river to the west of Chandler—a town on the south shore, well out toward the eastern end of the Gaspé Peninsula. Stopping the car, I descended to inalte a few “investigational” sweepings with my net, and to my utter amazement discovered that I had captured a net full of males of the rare and much-sought (because of its primitiveness) “cranefly” Pratoplasa fitchii, O.S., a member of the superfamily Psychodoidea.

Two species of the genus Lispothrips, Reuter have been recognized in Europe and it is interesting now to record two new species, making the first record of this genus in North America.

In a recent article Spencer records the Dermestid A. scrophulariae L. breeding in houses upon the dead hc'clies of the Cluster fly P. rudis Fab. A similar relationship between Dermestis lardarius L. and the dead adults of several species of Calliphoridae has twice come to the attention of the writer in Alberta.

Subelliptical-elongate, upper surface of body clothed with short, silvery pubescence. Head and thorax black; elytra rufo-castaneous, with suture darker.

Head rounded in front, three strong foveae in a line near the base. Eyes coarsely granulate. Mouth parts and antennae flavous, the latter with a slender club composed of the last three joints.

Female.—Length 8 mm. Vertex three-fourths as broad between eyes as distance from apex of tylus to middle of vertex at a point in line with posterior margins of eyes. Ocelli large, ocellocular line scarcely twice the diameter of an ocellus. Antennal segments proportioned from base, as follows:— 9: 14: 11: 11. Basal antennal slender, extending two-thirds its total length beyond apex of tylus. Bucculae not attaining bases of antennae. Rostrum attaining hind coxae, first segment reaching base of head. Rostral segments proportioned from base, as follows :—9 : 11 : 8 : 4. Vertex sparsely pubescent, somewhat shining, rather granulate becoming weakly transversely rugulose before eye and above antenna. A few scattered, shallow punctures on vertex between eyes. Genae smooth above becoming transversely rugulose toward gular region.

At the time of my study of the genus Odontæus (published in the Canadian Entomologist, May, 1928) there was before me a single female from Alabama which appeared to be different from anything else in the material.

The chain of Rocky Mountains extending south from Canada through western Montana. Wyoming, Colorado and into northern New Mexico produce a series of butterflies which are at prespnt referable under an anicia-brucei classification. Various races from this supposed parental stock are found in southwestern Colorado, Utah, the Great Basin of Nevada and elsewhere with members of the clan branching down into New Mexico. For several years I have been hoping to find representatives of this group reaching over into the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. In 1927 when on Alta Peak in Sequoia National Park, I took two males and in 1928 Mr. Walter Ireland captured four females in the same locality which I find to be closely related to the above mentioned breed.

Related to medius Jones but lacking a brown, inverted Y shaped frontal vitta, the lower two thirds of the front yellowish pollinose, the lower fourth to third yellow in ground color. Length 11 to 12 mm.

In a recent article by Barnes and Benjamin (1929, Bull. Brook. Ent. Soc., XXIV, 177) the generic term Trichofeltia is proposed for the species circumdata Grt.
