On July 14, 1937, an infestation of Philadelphus (Mock Orange or Syringa) by a leaf miner was observed on the grounds of the Dominion Parasite Laboratory, Belleville, Ont.

The lateness of the hour will prevent my taking time to add to Professor Baker's admirable history many personal recollections of the founders of the Society and of its early activities. Dr. W. E. Saunders, the secretary for a number of years, and I belong to the second generation of active members; however for a period of fifteen or more years we were associated with the pioneers who well and truly laid the foundation of the Society.

During the summer months, dead and weakened trees and logs left in the woods are subject to attack by a variety of insects, mainly of the order Coleoptera. Some are wood-boring forms which cause a depreciation in the potential value of the lumber; others are barkbeetles which at times may build up in numbers sufficient to cause a primary attack on the living stand.

The possibility of the above synonymy was suggested in a letter from Mr. W. J. Brown of Ottawa. Through the kindness of Dr. K. G. Blair and Mr. J. Balfour-Browne of the British Museum, I have been able to study a male and a female of A. elongatus (Gyllenhal), and to compare them with two male and two female paratypes of A. bryanti Carr.

Male. Wings with two brown spots in apical portion of subcostal cell. A row of about six short stout bristles on the distal half of the posteroventral surface of mid femora. Prosternum with a few hairs anteriorly and posteriorly, and a few hairs also present on the middle of the propleura in front of the spiracle. Genitalia similar to D. pictipes Loew, except the anterior claspers (see figure), which are bent forward hookwise, narrowly laterally expanded at the apex, and with a thin transparent web in the sinus of the hook.

The Leng check list (1920) records under Scotochroa, which is a distinctly American genus established by Leconte in 1874, two species, S. atra Lec. and S. basalis Lec. Scotochroa buprestoides Kirby (described in 1837 as a Xylita) is listed under atra, indicating it as either a synonym or as being questionable as a valid species. The Csiki Catalogue of the Serropalpidae (1924) lists one species, atra, under Scotochroa with buprestoides given under this and with basalis as a variety. The Supplement of the Leng list (1927) records basalis as a variety of atra. The general question as to the species in this group seems to warrant a review of the genus with a key to the species.

The genotype of Symphobus is Tryphon pleuralis Cresson, and that of Oetophorus is Mesoleius stretchii Cresson. I have studied the types of each of these species and find them congeneric. Symphobus was described originally without included species and pleuralis is the first species to be referred to it. Pleuralis has pectinate claws and in that respect does not fit the original description of Symphobus.

For several years, as a result of various Insect Faunal Surveys in Nova Scotia, material of an undetermined Epipaschid of the genus Tetralopha has been accumulating in our collection. On a recent visit to Washington I could not match the species with any named material in the United States National Museum; in general appearance it is fairly close to Hulst's unique type of talleolalis but very considerably larger; although of approximately the same size as robustella Zell. it cannot be mistaken for this species on account of the very definitely geminate t. a. line, the paler median space and the clearly cut t. p. line, which latter character would also separate it from militella Zell.

Eubaphe immaculata was described by Tryon Reakirt in 1864 (Proc. Ent. Soc. Phil. II., 372) and his description is more or less inadequate as are almost all original descriptions in this genus. However, the type is in the Strecker Collection at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and represents a species that is not at all rare in the Chicago area.

Charles James Stewart Bethune was born on his maternal grandfather's farm in West Flamboro Township, Upper Canada, on August 12th, 1838. He was the son of the Rev. Alexander Neil Bethune, second Bishop of Toronto.
