Through the courtesy of Dr. J. McDunnough I was recently privileged to examine the collection of Anthidiine bees in the Entomological Branch of the Canadian Department of Agriculture, including both identified and unidentified nraterial. The list of species determined or confirmed follows, with comments.

Light traps have long been used to indicate cutworm moth population, but a survey of the literature reveals no instance in which light trap catches have been compared with any other source of information regarding the moth population. It has apparently been assumed by all workers, the writer included, that a light trap record furnished a reliable random sample of the population. Certain data have recently accumulated, horvever, which make it desirable to question this assumption, and some of these data will be presented here.

It was in the early days of August, as I approached the armory at Boulder, that I came across the nests of Melissodes obliqua Say. Careful examination disclosed eight entrances in an area of four square meters. This had been traversed by automobiles and so was without vegetation. The bees had constructed tunnels which led at first straight down and then suddenly turned off to one side. Ceaselessly, the males of the colony were darting back and forth. Occasionally, a female circled her way in from the fields, her hind legs bright yellow with their heavy loads of pollen. Then, almost inevitably, the males rushed in on all sides. There was a collision in mid-air and a sudden descent to the ground. Before the males could gather themselves together, the female was on her way. Quickly she made her way to the nest, hovered over the entrance, dropped in head first and was gone.

The American species of Aphrophora were first reviewed by Ball (Proc. Ia. Acad. Sci., VI, pp. 209-217, 1898) in his paper entitled “A Review of the Cercopidae of North America North of Mexico” in which eight species are treated, three of them therein describecl as new. Stern's paper (Conn. St. Geol. Nat. Hist. Surv. Bul. 34, pt. IV, 211, 1923) deals with the same species discussed by Ball with especial reference to their occurrence in Connecticut.

The first list of the crane-flies of Ontario under this general title was published in Canadian Entomologist, vol. 58, pp. 236-240; October 1926. In the present paper more than 80 additional species are recorded, based on the very extensive series of these flies contained in the Canadian National Collection, taken chiefly by Messrs. C. H. Curran, F. P. Ide and G. S. Walley. Species not included in the basic list are indicated by an asterisk (*) preceding the name. The total list of Tipulidae now known from Ontario is in excess of 150 but there are still more than 100 regional species that will undoubtedly be added to the list as a result of further collecting. As before, the collectors are indicated by initials following the record: C.H.C.=C. H. Curran; F.P.I.=F. P. Ide; G.S.W.:G. S. Walley.

Length, 5-5.8 mm.; width 2.3-2.6 mm. Moderately elongate ; rather strongly convex; slightly wider posteriorly. Black, the legs and sometimes the ventral thoracic sclerites brown; strongly shining throughout.

Some interesting developments recently have taken place with reference to the systematic status and distribution of the mint flea beetle, as we know it in America, which tend to clear up the origin of the pest in this country.

The following descriptions have been taken from specimens in the collection of Professor James G. Needham at Cornell University. Brief diagnostic characters of each have been listed by him in his forthcoming Handbook of North American Dragonflies.

The author of this paper is indebted to Dr. C. P. Gillette of the Colorado State Agricultural College for the privilege of studying a part of the State College's collection of Siphonaptera, in which were found the two new species described below. Unfortunately the specimens of these two new species are somewhat mutilated but after careful examination it is possible to publish the following descriptions.

The purpose of the present paper is to describe two new species of Bolbocerosoma and to figure the genitalia of the North American species of this genus. It therefore supplements the paper of Dawson and McColloch (Can. Ent., LVI, 9-15).

The two species described below live in the burrows of the common prairie dog.

Saprinus cynomysi n. sp.

Length (apex of thorax to apex of suture) 6-6.2 mm.; width 5 mm. Black, strongly shining throughout.

Head moderately finely and sparsely punctate, the punctures becoming very fine and sparse at middle of occiput. Supraocular stria distinct, extending across the front.

This genus was named by Enderlein for the reception of a single species, S. cornutiventris Enderlein, from Peru. No indication was given as to the systematic position of the genus, but the generic characters were clearly indicated and it is evident that it belongs—on the basis of Crawford's system, at least—in the subfamily Cherminae, which is Crawford's subfamily Carsidarinae. In fact, on the basis of Crawford's keys it would apparently run to Chermes (=Homotoma). On the basis of the very brief characterization of this genus elsewhere given by Enderlein it would appear that the genus Synoza is sufficiently distinct by reason of the curious venation of the wings alone.

B1ack, antennae partly ancl the palpi apically, reddish; face and cheeks yellow. Superficially very sinrilar to daemon Wiedmann from Brazil but at once distinguished by the short, fine yellow hair on the parafacials and cheeks and the shape of the male genital forceps, which are ridged as in apicilera Walker. Length, 11.5 to 13 mm.

In my paper on the Ephemeroptera of Covel Hill, Que., I recorded the spccies E. dorothea Needham as extremely common. In the summer of 1927 my assistant, Mr. G. S. walley, took numerous full-grown nymphs in the Covey Hill brook at a time when the so-called dorothea were emerging, so that the association of nymph and adult is fairly safe. These nymphs, however, proved to agree excellently with the description of cornuta Morg. except for the somewhat smaller size, and a careful reading of Dr. Morgan's description of the male subimago (the only other stage known to her) made it evident that the Covey Hill species should be known as cornuta Morg. and not dorothea Needh.

During January, 1927, the writer visited the collections of LeConte, at Cambridge, Mass., and of Colonel Casey at the National Museum at Washington, D.C. In the conclusions presented I have been influenced by an extensive correspondence with Mr. H. C. Fall and Dr. E. C. Van Dyke as to the interpretation of certain species.

“Geotrupes filicornis. Rufous; thorax tridentate; clypeus with an elongate horn.

Inhabits Upper Missouri.

Body pale brownish-rufous; clypeus, anterior and lateral margins punctured, entire; horn elongated, linear, slightly curved and compressed, longer than the greatest width of the head; thorax unequal; three tubercles, placed in a transverse series, the exterior ones compressed and longitudinal, intermediate transverse subemarginate; an indented line behind the middle tubercle, and a concavity each side; scutel triangular ; elytra with punctured striae. Length one fourth of an inch.

My last general paper on Florida Coleoptera was prepared in the autumn of 1924, and appeared in the Canadian Entomologist for July, 1925. Since that was written my time has been largely devoted to the final preparation and publication of the “Heteroptera of Eastern North America.” During the three years which have elapsed I have spent the winters at Dunedin on the west coast of Florida, but have made three additional collecting trips, of three or four weeks each, to Royal Palm Park. One of these was in December, the other two in March and April. This park comprises an area of 4,000 acres lying in extreme southern Florida, about 40 miles northeast of Cape Sable.

Holotype: Shape and Size: Broadly oval, elytra somewhat inflated so that the maximum width is in front of middle. Length: 9.59 mm.: width: 6.3 mm.

Color: Black above, piceous brown below, the posterior tibiae and femora darker; antennae brown, the basal joint of club dark. Shining.

In working up considerable material which the writer collected in the western United States certain new species of Hadronema have been recognized, with the result that a key is provided for the thirteen known species of which five are described as new. In 1918, Mr. E. H. Gibson published a key (Can. Ent., xl, pp. 81-84) to the species known to him, describing two new species. The writer examined these types in the U. S. National Museum during 1926 and found that Hadronema confraterna Gib. is in fact a good species of Lopidea, allied to Lopidea lepidii Kngt., but smaller and the left clasper somewhat differently shaped.

As far as I am aware, there are known at the present time but four species which are referred to this genus. Of these, one is recorded from Florida, one from Texas and Arizona, one from Nicaragua and one from Brazil.
