The bamboo grasshopper Ceracris fasciata is regarded as a major pest species because of the damage it causes to bamboo, and its classification within the families and subfamilies of the suborder Caelifera remains unclear. Thus, we attempted to resolve these questions using molecular biology methods and analyses. Our results are as follows: (1) the complete mitochondrial genome of C. fasciata is 15,569 bp in length. The mitochondrial genome contains a standard set of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and an A + T-rich region in the same order as those of the other analysed Caeliferan species. The putative start codon for the COX1 gene in C. fasciata is ACC, although it is not defined in other genes. The presence of tandem repeats of different sizes in the A + T-rich region may lead to size differences in other mitochondrial genomes. The mitochondrial genome of C. fasciata harbours the typical 37 genes and an A + T-rich region, and it shows similar characteristics to those of other grasshopper species. Characterization of the mitochondrial genome has enriched our knowledge of the mitochondrial genomes of Orthoptera around the world. Therefore, the phylogenetic relationships in Orthoptera can be re-examined. (2) In phylogenetic analyses, the monophyly of Orthoptera and its two suborders (Caelifera and Ensifera) has been consistently recovered based on most of the datasets selected, regardless of the optimal criteria. Our results do not support the monophyly of the subfamily Oedipodinae of Caelifera. We found that Phlaeoba albonema of the Acridinae is sorted into a clade with Ceracris in all our phylogenetic trees, and field experiments show that Phlaeoba always lives with Ceracris in the same ecotopes. Therefore, we suggest that Phlaeoba should be classified as a member of the Oedipodinae. We found that C. fasciata always clustered with Ceracris kiangsu, and both were sisters to Ceracris versicolor. Therefore, the genetic relationship between C. fasciata and C. kiangsu is closer than that between C. fasciata and C. versicolor. (3) The oldest estimated time of divergence of Ensifera in this context was determined to be 146.16 million years ago (Mya), or around the late Jurassic or early Cretaceous. We estimated that katydids (Grylloidea) likely diverged from other groups in the early Cretaceous. According to our divergence time analyses, we concluded that the ancestral Acrididae probably originated in the early Paleogene, and it is likely that the major diversification events happened at the middle Paleogene, well into the next geologic time. We estimated that crickets (Tettigoniidae) likely diverged from other groups in the early Cretaceous. Acrididae and Romaleinae group, Pyrgacrididae and Ommexechidae group, the youngest two clades we observed, were estimated to have diverged 58.79 Mya, between the middle and early Paleogene. C. versicolor is a sister to the group containing C. kiangsu and C. fasciata. First, C. versicolor diverged from the sister group (C. kiangsu + C. fasciata) around 44.81 Mya, and then the C. kiangsu and C. fasciata group separated at 43.04 Mya.

To entomologists in India the three species of mango Jassids—Idiocerus niveosparsus, I. atkinsoni and I. clypealis—are fairly well known, both on account of their wide distribution and also on account of the serious damage they do to the mango crop. In the course of our studies on these important orchard pests we have within the past three years come across three natural enemies of the adult hopper and one of the nymph; These are (1) a Pipunculid fly; (2) a Stylopid—both internal parasites; (3) an Epipyropid moth—an external parasite of the adults: and (4) a Dryinid wasp—an external parasite of the nymphs.

A population of Aedes aegypti (L.) near the Kenya coast was monitored for nearly a year after a genetic control experiment. Two genetic markers that were carried by released males but unknown to the region persisted in the population during the entire period of observation. The endurance of introduced genetic material in a natural population is an important step toward the use of genetic control in insect management.

Damage to citrus fruits by Noctuid moths is known to occur at Ibadan and Agege (about 14 miles north of Lagos). The majority of the observations recorded in this paper were made on Moor Plantation, Ibadan, during the 1938 and 1939 seasons. Box (1942) describes the crop ripening, in the Gold Coast, between April and August as the Main crop, and that ripening between September and December as the Mid crop; in Nigeria, the bulk of the citrus ripens during the latter period, which is known as the Main crop. In this paper the terms wet season and dry season crops are employed.

A technique is described for counting the numbers of Pseudotheraptus wayi Brown on coconut palms, on which this Coreid is a serious pest in East Africa, Zanzibar and the neighbouring islands. The crown of each palm is systematically searched by an African assistant, the insects collected being classified by instars and then replaced. The adults can fly and very few are seen or captured.

Palms were examined by a team of searchers in five areas in a well-maintained plantation on Mafia Island, 3–4 separate samples, each of 61–138 palms, being taken in each area between mid-January and mid-February 1956. In all, 13 searchers participated, but not all were used on the same day; when they had become experienced their daily catches were of comparable size.

The total nymphal populations, and the proportions of them in the various stages, are sufficiently consistent to suggest that the searching technique may give reproducible results, and thus be of considerable value as a means of assessing the results of control measures.

The average catch was about one nymph for each palm that was searched, and recaptures from known numbers of bugs liberated indicated that about one quarter of the population present was being found. The nymphal population is not distributed at random among the palms.

Insecticidal aerosols dispersed from aircraft are used in control measures against Glossina spp., and the interpretation of spray monitoring data in terms of the likely effect on the flies requires some knowledge of variation of the collection efficiency of the flies under a range of appropriate conditions. A low speed wind tunnel was used to measure the collection efficiencies of the various component parts of an adult of G. morsitans Westwood when at rest on cylinders simulating the branches and twigs of the natural habitat. The wind speed range was from 0·25 to 1·5 m/s and monodisperse droplets 10, 15, 20 and 25 μm in diameter were used. Although certain body zones exhibited very high apparent collection efficiencies (primarily due to interception), the average overall efficiencies varied from as low as 0·8% for 10-μm droplets at 0·25 m/s up to 22% for 25-μm droplets at 1·5 m/s.

The use of multiple species in biological control programmes is controversial when interactions among them are not fully understood. We determined the response of the pupal parasitoid Coptera haywardi (Oglobin) to different availability of Anastrepha ludens (Loew) pupae previously parasitized or not by larval–pupal Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead). The two types of pupae were exposed at different ages and proportions to different numbers of C. haywardi females for 48 h. The performance of C. haywardi adults emerging from parasitized and unparasitized pupae was measured. Coptera haywardi prefers to attack unparasitized A. ludens pupae rather than pupae parasitized by D. longicaudata. However, when the availability of unparasitized pupae was low or the number of foraging females was high, C. haywardi competed against early immature stages of the D. longicaudata, or hyperparasitized, feeding directly on the advanced-immature developmental stages of the early acting species. Adults of C. haywardi emerging as hyperparasitoids were no different in size, fecundity and longevity from those emerging as primary parasitoids. Our data suggest that simultaneous use of these species in augmentative biological control projects may be feasible but should be carefully planned in order to avoid any detrimental effect of its interaction.

Further observations and trials were conducted with insecticides against larvae of Culicoides impunctatus Goetgh. on Soutra Hill, Midlothian. The analysis of the data was complicated by a large natural reduction (76%) which occurred in the untreated plots. Nevertheless, it appears that the following dosages of insecticidal preparation were still active two years after application:—(a) 50 and 200 mg. p,p′DDT/sq. ft. applied as a dust, wettable powder or water-miscible concentrate (99% control), (b) 50 and 200 mg. γ BHC/sq. ft. as a wettable powder or 200 mg. γ BHC/sq. ft. as a water-miscible concentrate (95% control), (c) dieldrin at 25 mg./sq. ft., which gave 97 per cent, control and (d) chlordane at 50 mg./sq. ft., which gave 84 per cent. control.

The effect of spray volume on insecticidal effect was investigated by applying 25 mg. and 50 mg. p,p′DDT/sq. ft. in the following spray volumes:—5, 10, 15, 25, 50 and 80 gals./acre. The effect of 50 mg./sq. ft. at each volume was less marked than in the previous work, when only one concentration was used. Weather conditions in the present season were unusual, but there were indications that moderate spray volumes (15 and 25 gals./acre) give the best results at this dosage of insecticide. The combined results for 50 mg./sq. ft. at all volumes gave only 43 per cent, residual control, while those for the lower dosage showed no residual control.

The results are discussed with reference to the effect of rainfall on residual control. It is concluded that the volume of spray applied is unimportant provided the droplets of insecticide are closely and evenly distributed on the mossy vegetation that overlies the peat. Subsequent prolonged rain, of the order of 20 inches, is required to attain the most effective distribution of the insecticide, which is at the surface of the peat, where the eggs are laid and the newly hatched larvae will come in contact with the poison.

A cheap power pack that could be run off a 12-V car battery was constructed using a 12–250–V DC-DC converter. The power pack is small and light and can be used to run a Helena cellulose acetate electrophoresis system away from a mains electricity supply. The system was used sucessfully to identify adults of the Simulium damnosum Theobald complex in a field laboratory in northern Sierra Leone.

Adults of the cabbage root fly (Erioischia brassicae (Bch.)) fed on 0·1% tepa in 10% sucrose solution during the second and third days after emergence laid over 95% sterile eggs. Nearly complete sterility was also obtained from females fed on 0·l% tepa for two days between mating and oviposition. Tepa at 0·1% did not affect longevity of either sex or the competitiveness of treated males, although at higher concentrations longevity was reduced. When flies were enclosed in a large field cage and provided with food baits containing 0·1% tepa, sucrose and leucine along a hedgerow, 70% of the eggs laid were sterile.

Between 1961 and 1967 intensive and extensive field studies on the sugar-cane pest Saccharosydne saccharivora (Westw.) were carried out in Jamaica (with supplementary observations from British Honduras). Egg populations were scored for size, and egg mortality and nymph-adult parasitism were estimated directly. In epidemic, but not endemic, populations, successive generations of the pest were segregated and their development was synchronised over areas of up to 80 miles2 despite its 6½—7-week life-cycle and potential for continuous breeding. Segregation was due to the sterilising action of the parasite Stenocranophilus quadrat us Pierce (Halictophagidae); in the drier months this spread so rapidly through the nymph and adult population that oviposition ceased until the first adults of the next generation reached maturity. In the wet season this effect was complemented by the entomogenous fungus Metarrhizium anisopliae. Synchronisation was ensured by the dispersal of parasitised adult Saccharosydne saccharivora before oviposition. In ratoon cane there were six or seven generations between successive annual harvests; egg populations were highest in generations 1–3 (up to 1·0×106/chain-row (≡2O·2-m row-length)), and declined in old cane irrespective of season. In plant cane, egg populations did not show a decline with age and sometimes increased. In epidemic areas a factor associated with older cane sometimes caused over 90% egg mortality; elsewhere Tetrastichus sp. (Eulophidae) was the leading cause of egg mortality (ca 30%). Data from extensive surveys showed that the early stages of outbreaks were invariably associated with plant cane; heavy infestations rarely occurred on cane subjected to adverse growing conditions; and populations were smaller on the variety B42231 than on B4362 and B41227. Outbreak periods since the 18th century have been associated with periods of prosperity within the sugar industry, when presumably more attention was paid to improving production. Rainfall, in that it improves cane growth, is beneficial to S. saccharivora, whereas drought is detrimental; published records of outbreaks in dry periods are due to the preference of migrating adults for young cane which is most prevalent in the dry season. It is concluded that the essential prerequisite for an outbreak is plant cane growing under favourable climatic and agricultural conditions; present conditions, namely the long harvest period, high standards of cultivation, irrigation and fertiliser practice, and favourable cane varieties together offer the minimum chance for a natural end to outbreaks.

The sexual behaviour of Heliothis peltigera (Denis & Schiffermüller) was studied in the laboratory. Calling activity was very low during the first five hours of scotophase and then increased sharply, particularly in six-to eight-day old females. Peak activity was observed, in all ages tested, between eight and nine hours into scotophase. Calling in six-day old females was significantly higher than in two-day old females but no significant differences were detected between four-to eight-day old females. Maximal amounts of pheromone were found in the pheromone glands of five-to eight-day old females in the second half of scotophase. Male activity was monitored in a wind tunnel. There was no response to pheromone lures during the first two days, then flying activity increased sharply and maintained its high level until the eighth day. Peak activity was observed between six and eight hours into scotophase. Mating activity was very low during the first five hours of scotophase and then increased sharply, with 61.8% of the observed pairs mating between six and eight hours into scotophase. The sexual behaviour of H. peltigera was very similar to the reported behaviour of the sympatric species Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) indicating that the reproductive separation of the two species is not affected by temporal factors, but depends mainly on the species-specific pheromone blends.

The Red Palm Weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier 1790) is an invasive pest from southeastern Asia and Melanesia that in the last 30 years has spread widely in the Middle East and Mediterranean Basin. Its stem-boring larvae cause great damage to several palm species of the Arecaceae family, many of which are economically important for agricultural and ornamental purposes. Therefore, great attention has recently been focused in studying this species to identify sustainable and effective eradication strategies, such as sterile insect technique (SIT). The rapid spread of RPW is associated with its high reproductive success. To evaluate the suitability of a SIT strategy, particular physiological and behavioral aspects of RPW reproduction, such as the presence of polyandry and post-copulatory sperm selection mechanisms, were investigated. To determine paternity of progeny from multiply mated females, double-crossing experiments were carried out confining individual females with either a wild-type male or a γ-irradiated male (Co-60). Fecundity and fertility of females were scored to evaluate post-copulatory sperm selection. Results showed that progeny were almost exclusively produced by the sperm of the second male, suggesting that a last-male sperm precedence is expressed at high levels in this species, and providing interesting insights for an area-wide RPW management strategy such as the SIT.

Larvae of Pimpla instigator (F.) were found to pass through five larval instars during development. Initial studies of external morphology identified only three morphological groups: the primary larva (L1) the intermediate larvae (L2−4) and the final instar larvae (L5). Biometrical study of the maximum head width, width of buccal mask, inter-metatentorial distance and diameter of spiracles permitted morphological separation of all five larval instars. Under a 16 h photophase (at 25±1°C; 70±10% r.h.) and an 8 h scotophase (at 15±l°C; 80±10% r.h.) the 2nd, 3rd and 4th larval instars were found to last about 24 h each, and the 5th instar 9±1 days. Progressive development of the genital buds during the 5th instar and prepupal stages facilitated sexing of the larvae.

Host choice and winter-host leaving in emigrants of bird cherry–oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus), were investigated in the laboratory. In settling choice tests, emigrants collected from the winter host, Prunus padus, preferred this plant over a summer host, oats. Emigrants which had left P. padus for up to 24 h did not express a preference as a group, and those which had left for 24–48 h preferred oats. Eighty seven percent of emigrants caged as fourth-instar nymphs on P. padus leaves abandoned the host by the second day of adult life, and apparently did not subsequently return to the leaf. In an olfactometer, P. padus leaves which had supported spring generations of R. padi were repellent to emigrants. Volatiles were entrained from uninfested and R. padi-infested P. padus using cut twigs in the laboratory as well as intact twigs on a tree in the field. Entrainment extracts from uninfested P. padus had no effect on emigrants in the olfactometer, whereas those from twigs infested with nymphal emigrants were repellent. The study indicates that in R. padi, host-alternation is driven by behavioural changes which occur in individuals as well as between morphs.

Although, among the very numerous species of Diptera described by the late Dr. Hermann Loew, the types of not a few are stated to have been obtained in Asia Minor, nothing whatever relating directly to the Diptera of the dardanelles has hitherto appeared in print. A paper by Loew on a collection of Diptera made near Varna* is, however, worth bearing in mind in connection with any future work on the Dipterous fauna of the Dardanelles. The paper in question includes records of seven species of Tabanidae, some of which are among those mentioned in the following pages.

From October 1918 to February 1919 inclusive I was stationed at Basrah, Lower Mesopotamia, and during that time I was able to devote some time to the collecting of Culicidae and their larvae.

A comparison of the mosquito fauna in a forest near Zika forest, Uganda, in July-August 1971, showed that Mansonia (Coquillettidia) fuscopennata (Theo.), Culex (C.) annulioris Theo. and M. (Mansonioides) africana (Theo.) made up 84% of the catch taken at 24-h human baits in a horizontal transect, whereas M. (C.) metallica (Theo.) made up 90% of those taken at rest. Precipitin tests showed that 98% of M. metallica and most individuals of the other Coquillettidia spp. had taken avian blood, but that two out of seven individuals of M. fuscopennata had taken primate blood. In olfactometer studies M. metallica did not respond to the human hand or a chicken. It is concluded that none of the Coquillettidia spp. caught resting, except M. fuscopennata, has any preference for man.

A new tribe allied to the Telsimiini and Sticholotini and a new genus are erected for Ghanius karachiensis sp. n., a Coccinellid predator of Cerococcus hibisci Green in Pakistan.
