In this study the host plant genotype effect on cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.)(Hemiptera: Aphididae) preference and performance, the effect of aphid genotype on parasitoids performance, as well as the indirect effects of plant genotypes on aphid parasitoid performance, were tested using different population samples of the aphid and its primary endoparasitoid wasp, Diaeretiella rapae (M'Intosh) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Experiments were run as fully-factorial randomized block design in a greenhouse. Accordingly, host plant cultivar had significant effects on the total number of aphids and aphid-load whilst the fitness of the aphid genotypes were also influenced by plant cultivar. The effect of parasitism on cabbage aphids was significantly different between plant cultivars. Overall, the results revealed that cabbage aphid is under different selective pressures arising from both higher (parasitoid) and lower (host plant cultivar) trophic levels. The host plant cultivar had a significant effect on both aphid fitness and parasitism rate on particular aphid genotypes. This indicates that host-plant-adapted aphid species can create much context-dependency in the nature and strength of ‘fitness benefits parasitism’, which may in turn alter the costs and benefits of host specialization.

In this paper, an attempt has been made to describe the external morphology of eight species of larvae belonging to the family Anobiidae with a view to constructing keys for the identification of these larvae and providing descriptions by which identification can be definitely confirmed. Two keys have been drawn up for use according to whether whole larvae or mounted preparations of parts of larvae are being examined. Notes have been added at the end of the description of each larva giving particulars as to its habitat and points for comparison from the descriptions of other workers.

One point of interest that arises from the foregoing descriptions is that Hedobia, which has usually in the past been classified as a member of the family Ptinidae is definitely an Anobiid when the structure of the larva is considered.

Invasive species are a significant threat to affected ecosystems, having serious environmental, economic and social impacts. The maritime pine bast scale, Matsucoccus feytaudi Ducasse (Hemiptera: Matsucoccidae), causes serious damage to Pinus pinaster forests in SE France, Corsica and Italy where it has been introduced. This study illustrates the adaptive management plan implemented in the Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Regional Natural Park in Tuscany, Italy, where M. feytaudi arrived in 2004, leading to the decay of local P. pinaster stands. The management programme, aimed at slowing the establishment and growth of M. feytaudi, was carried out in the main sector of the park, Tenuta di San Rossore, to retard the destruction of the P. pinaster coastal strip protecting the more internal woodland from sea salt and to allow replacement of P. pinaster trees with a more stable broad-leaved wood. The combined use of mass trapping and silvicultural interventions, applied in a targeted manner according to distribution maps of pest captures and damage, helped to delay forest destruction compared with a nearby unmanaged area of the park Tenuta di Tombolo. Although M. feytaudi continued to spread during the management period, the populations remained at low levels for 6 years, showing a marked increase in 2012. During this period, the P. pinaster stands were reduced from 320 to 249 ha. The final result of this ongoing gradual conversion process will be transformation of the P. pinaster forest into Holm oak woods and Mediterranean shrub land, while P. pinaster will survive as clusters or blocks of trees.

Some years ago the writer published an account of the bionomics of the two species of Eumerus whose larvae attack narcissus and other plants. In this account it was pointed out that E. tuberculatus, first recognised as occurring in Britain by Collin in 1920, was far more abundant than E. strigatus, which had been described by Verrall in 1901. This finding was entirely contrary to expectation and threw serious doubt upon the accuracy of many previous records of injury to plants in which strigatus was invariably cited as the culprit. At the same time it explained in a large measure the absence of reports of Eumerus attacking onions in Britain, for in those countries in which damage to onions is of common occurrence the predominant species appears to be strigatus. In view of the foregoing, and of the fact that the successful cultivation of onions is exceedingly difficult and at times impossible in regions where attacks by Eumerus are experienced, it is desirable that further information be obtained as to the occurrence of strigatus in Britain.

In insect, the cytochrome P450 plays a pivotal role in detoxification to toxic allelochemicals. Helicoverpa armigera can tolerate and survive in 2-tridecanone treatment owing to the CYP6B6 responsive expression, which is controlled by some regulatory DNA sequences and transcription regulators. Therefore, the 2-tridecanone responsive region and transcription regulators of the CYP6B6 are responsible for detoxification of cotton bollworm. In this study, we used yeast one-hybrid to screen two potential transcription regulators of the CYP6B6 from H. armigera that respond to the plant secondary toxicant 2-tridecanone, which were named Prey1 and Prey2, respectively. According to the NCBI database blast, Prey1 is the homology with FK506 binding protein (FKBP) of Manduca sexta and Bombyx mori that belongs to the FKBP-C superfamily, while Prey2 may be a homology of an unknown protein of Papilio or the fcaL24 protein homology of B. mori. The electrophoretic mobility shift assays revealed that the FKBP of prokaryotic expression could specifically bind to the active region of the CYP6B6 promoter. After the 6th instar larvae of H. armigera reared on 2-tridecanone artificial diet, we found there were similar patterns of CYP6B6 and FKBP expression of the cotton bollworm treated with 10 mg g−1 2-tridecanone for 48 h, which correlation coefficient was the highest (0.923). Thus, the FKBP is identified as a strong candidate for regulation of the CYP6B6 expression, when the cotton bollworm is treated with 2-tridecanone. This may lead us to a better understanding of transcriptional mechanism of CYP6B6 and provide very useful information for the pest control.

A method for intensive screening of cowpea for resistance to Maruca testulalis (Geyer) is described. It is capable of ensuring uniform infestation and thus eliminating problems due to escapes. Four cowpea varieties earlier identified from field screening trials as resistant (TVU 946, TVU 1896 AG, H 51–1 and 2 AK) and three susceptible varieties (Ife Brown, H 144–1 and 58–185) were screened using this method. The results confirmed the status of the resistant varieties. Some effects on M. testulalis included, non preference for oviposition and larval feeding, and antibiosis manifested by reduced final larval instar weight, elongated pupal period and smaller sized emerging adult females.

For the past two years the writer has studied the Oriental CULICIDAB at intervals, with a view to preparing a tabular synopsis of the species. During this time it has become evident that a large number of names will have to be rejected or changed in some way, and it seems desirable to call attention at once to some of these proposed changes, as it will inevitably be a considerable time before the thorough revision of the Oriental mosquitos which the writer has in view can be published. The present paper is intended merely to deal with nomenclatorial questions, points of systematic interest being introduced only in so far as they are necessary to explain or justify the writer's conclusions. The classification here indicated may be taken as approximately final, but the limits of certain genera and their arrangement may ultimately require modification, while their number may not improbably have to be reduced. Over 80 specific names are here for the first time definitely sunk, while the probable synonymy of 8 or 10 others is suggested. On the other hand two new names are proposed owing to the preoccupation of the original designation of the species.

Data were obtained on survival and development of larvae of Distantiella theobroma (Dist.) on cocoa seedlings maintained under three water régimes, high (HW), intermediate (IW) and low (LW). Recorda were taken of plant growth and damage by feeding. The water régimes of some plants were reversed in the latter part to the experiment.

Larvae soon completed development on HW plants, but on LW plants a large number died, possibly because they were unable to take up fluid fast enough to offset loss by evaporation. There was intermediate mortality on IW plants.

Larvae took longer to develop on IW than on HW plants, probably because they imbibed nutrients at a reduced rate.

More larvae survived on LW plants that were regenerating after increase in water status than on plants that had received abundant water continuously. They fed mainly on the old wood and very little on the soft regenerative shoots, so were apparently favoured by some change in the peripheral tissues of the main stem.

On HW plants, nearly all feeding took place on woody or partially hardened tissue; newly flushing tissue was not fed on if it was growing normally. On IW plants, the expansion of new terminal leaves was often slow, and these tissues were then attacked by young larvae. This happened much more on LW plants, where the apical region was killed by persistent feeding. On all plants larvae older than second instar fed only on hard tissues.

Later effects of feeding were splitting of the wood where lesions had been made and sometimes the development of fungal infecdtions. The most severe infections occurred when the upper part of the old stem died back on LW plants that were regenerating after increase in water status.

The genus Megastigmus Dalman, 1820 (Hymenoptera: Megastigmidae) contains potential biocontrol agents of the invasive eucalypt galling chalcid Leptocybe spp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), with several species reported in various parts of the world. Species discrimination is challenging due to intraspecific morphological variation, difficulty in measuring sizes of body parts, and the lack of information regarding the global distribution of parasitic Megastigmus. We used two species commonly associated with Leptocybe in its native range to review taxonomic methods and determine the most reliable morphological characters in species delimitation. We examined size variation of body characters, and conducted species discrimination using multivariate ratio analysis, mitochondrial Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and nuclear 28S rDNA (28S) sequences. Morphological traits were effective in species delimitation yet revealed high variation in several characters employed in current keys. Knowledge generated on morphology and DNA justified the description of a new species, M. manonae, sp. n., the first record of M. pretorianensis in Australia, and revised diagnostic characters for M. zvimendeli. Based on these diagnostic characters and molecular data, we synonymize three species (M. judikingae, syn. n., from Australia, M. sichuanensis, syn. n., from China and M. icipeensis, syn. n., from Kenya) with M. zvimendeli. Our findings highlight the importance of molecular markers in assisting taxonomic decision-making and the need for coordinated work in identifying Megastigmus associated with Leptocybe spp.

None of the species so far described under Urosigalphus is known to me, but Cameron's Rhyssosigalphus is clearly a synonym of Ashmead's interesting genus.

Szépligeti (Genera Insectorum, fasc. 22b, 1904, p. 90) synonymised Urosigalphus under Sigalphus, Latr. (i.e., Triaspis, Hal.); I do not know what authority he had for his action, which was ignored by subsequent writers (Crawford, 1907, 1914; Cushman, 1922).

The simultaneous infestation of a plant by several species of herbivores may affect the attractiveness of plants to the natural enemies of one of the herbivores. We studied the effect of coconut fruits infested by the pests Aceria guerreronis and Steneotarsonemus concavuscutum, which are generally found together under the coconut perianth. The predatory mite Neoseiulus baraki produced lower numbers of offspring on fruits infested with S. concavuscutum and on fruits infested with both prey than on fruits with A. guerreronis only. The predators were attracted by odours emanating from coconuts with A. guerreronis, but not by odours from coconuts with S. concavuscutum, even when A. guerreronis were present on the same fruit. Fewer N. baraki were recaptured on fruits with both prey or with S. concavuscutum than on fruits with only A. guerreronis. Furthermore, the quality of A. guerreronis from singly and multiply infested coconuts as food for N. baraki did not differ. Concluding, our results suggest that N. baraki does not perform well when S. concavuscutum is present on the coconuts, and the control of A. guerreronis by N. baraki may be negatively affected by the presence of S. concavuscutum.

The production of males and females by apterae of a holocyclic clone of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) was studied in the laboratory by transferring apterous virginoparae from long day to short day conditions at different stages of their pre- and post-natal development. Prenatal exposure was also examined in nine additional clones coming from different regions of Greece. By increasing the number of short day cycles at 17°C, the aphids switched to male production earlier and produced more males. The highest mean number of male progeny was observed in apterae that were transferred to short day conditions 13–14 days prenatally. Apterae that were transferred to short day conditions after the fourth nymphal instar produced only females. Apterous virginoparae were produced by aphids that were transferred to short day conditions 0–1 days prenatally or postnatally. Aphids, given short days prenatally or in the first instar, produced alate female progeny that were all gynoparae. The later the instar aphids were transferred to short day conditions the fewer the gynoparae produced among their female progeny. A reduction in the total number of progeny and embryos per ovariole was observed as aphids were transferred to short day conditions in earlier stages of their development. The increase in male production, which follows the increase in the duration of long night exposure, was also observed in the additional eight out of nine examined clones.

Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) colonies established by field-collected alates were reared in the laboratory for 11 years. Weights of members of each caste and full-colony censuses were performed regularly; the most recent 2003–2004 data are reported. Colonies averaged 11623.5±910 individuals, and with the exception of primary queens from one genetic lineage, mean weights for all castes had increased since 2001. Female replacement reproductives, or neotenics, developed to replace dead queens in clusters of either few, large individuals or many, small individuals. Regardless of cluster size, female neotenics comprised more reproductive biomass per colony than primary queens. The number and size of female neotenics was independent of colony size or time elapsed since a founding queen's death.

A dipping technique for exposing large numbers of house-flies (Musca domestica L.) to measured doses of insecticide is described. It is suitable for selecting resistant populations and, while giving consistent results, is more rapid than other techniques used for this purpose.

Up to 2,000 flies of both sexes, less than 24 hr. old, are immersed for three minutes in 100 ml. of a 70 per cent, mixture of acetone and water containing the required concentration of insecticide, using a 9-cm. sintered glass Büchner funnel as the immersion chamber. The liquid is then removed by suction, the sides of the funnel are wiped with filter paper, and the flies are allowed to drain for three minutes; they are then transferred in small batches to plastic recovery chambers containing food. Mortality is recorded next day, and the survivors are released into breeding cages.

Experiments showed that immersion for three minutes in 70 per cent, acetone was virtually harmless to the flies and that the amount of insecticide deposited on individual flies was reasonably uniform (coefficient of variation about 20%). Batches of 2,000 flies, but not more, could be treated at one time.

When the dipping technique was compared with topical application of measured drops of insecticide, using a susceptible strain of house-flies and two other strains that were resistant to DDT and diazinon, dipping gave steeper log-probit regression lines than topical application, and the LD50's and resistance factors of the resistant strains were smaller. With flies resistant to DDT, dipping gave straight regression lines whereas topical application gave compound lines.

While the Oriental and Neotropical Trypaneids have been the subject in recent times of extensive studies, those of the Ethiopian Region are still almost in the same condition in which they were left by H. Loew in his valuable paper of 1861. Only more recently Prof. Hendel has made an attempt to erect some Ethiopian genera in his general classification of the family; but all these genera are only shortly characterised by means of dichotomic tables, and most of their type-species have been given names as new species, but without any description.

Thus far nine species of Anopheles have been found in Palestine. These, in order of frequency and importance, are : A. elutus, Edw., A. superpictus, Grassi, A. sergenti, Theo., A. multicolor, Camb., A. claviger, Mg. (bifurcatus, auct.), A. algeriensis, Theo., A. hyrcanus, Pall., A. pharoensis, Theo., and A. coustani, Lav. (mauritianus, Grp.).

The morphological characters of the eggs of these species have been described and are well known. Workers have, however, overlooked the fact that their eggs arrange themselves on water in specific patterns, determined apparently by their structure. Observations made during 1939–41 have shown that, if a number of eggs is placed on a drop of water, they assume a pattern characteristic of the species. This pattern arrangement makes possible a macroscopic differentiation of species in the field.

Observations have been made on ovipositions of all the species, but more particularly of A. elutus (188 ovipositions), A. sergenti (365 ovipositions), A. superpictus (149 ovipositions) and A. multicolor (51 ovipositions). These results indicate that these species arrange themselves into two types of patterns :—

i. Eggs arranged in parallel patterns. To this group belong those species that breed in open unshaded water : A. elutus, A. superpictus, A. multicolor.

ii. Eggs arranged in angular patterns, the eggs lying at an angle to one another, in the form of stars, etc. This group comprises the six remaining species, all of which prefer shaded places for their development.

The wheat dwarf disease is among the most damaging diseases in cereals. Its aetiological agent is the Wheat dwarf virus (WDV), which is exclusively transmitted from plant to plant by leafhoppers from the genus Psammotettix (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae). The parameters linked to the WDV/Psammotettix pathosystem are still poorly understood. We studied Psammotettix individuals collected in wheat and barley fields in France and, as a comparison, from grassland at agroecological interface in West Slovenia. Species identity of males and females has been determined using multiple criteria. In the first step, the characterization of the collected individuals included recordings of vibrational signals used in mating behaviour and morphometric analyses. In addition, a 442 nt sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxydase I (COI) gene was obtained for some individuals and compared to COI sequences of the Psammotettix leafhoppers available in public databases. In the cereal fields in France, P sammotettix alienus was the most numerous species; however, it sometimes occurred together with Psammotettix confinis, while in the grasslands in Slovenia, the third syntopic species in Psammotettix community was Psammotettix helvolus. The temporal parameters of the P. alienus male calling song that were measured in this study were very similar to those measured in a previous study. The local biotic and/or abiotic parameters most likely influence the life history of Psammotettix leafhoppers, and the proportion of viruliferous individuals collected in cereal fields was 14.9%, while leafhoppers collected in Slovenia were virus-free. Taken together, results show that more detailed information on population structure of Psammotettix leafhoppers is crucial for providing an insight into the epidemiology of wheat dwarf disease.

Two thrips, Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall) and Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom) are major pests of cowpea in South China. To realistically compare the growth, development and reproductive characteristics of these two thrips species, we compared their age-stage, two-sex life tables on cowpea pods under summer and winter natural environmental regimes. The results showed that the total preadult period of M. usitatus was 8.09 days, which was significantly longer than that of F. intonsa (7.06 days), while the adult female longevity of M. usitatus (21.14 days) was significantly shorter than that of F. intonsa (25.77 days). Significant differences were showed in male adult longevity (10.68 days for F. intonsa and 16.95 days for M. usitatus) and the female ratio of offspring (0.67 for F. intonsa and 0.51 for M. usitatus), and the total preadult period of M. usitatus (16.20 days) was significantly longer than that of F. intonsa (13.66 days) in the winter regime. The net reproductive rate (summer: R0 = 85.62, winter: R0 = 105.22), intrinsic rate of increase (summer: r = 0.3020 day−1, winter: r = 0.2115 day−1), finite rate of increase (summer: λ = 1.3526 day−1, winter: λ = 1.2356 day−1) and gross reproduction rate (summer: GRR = 139.34, winter: GRR = 159.88) of F. intonsa were higher than those of M. usitatus (summer: R0 = 82.91, r = 0.2741, λ = 1.3155, GRR = 135.71; winter: R0 = 80.62, r = 0.1672, λ = 1.1820, GRR = 131.26), and the mean generation times (summer: T = 14.73 days, winter: T = 22.01 days) of F. intonsa were significantly shorter than those of M. usitatus (summer: T = 16.11 days, winter: T = 26.25 days). These results may contribute to a better understanding of the bioecology of different thrips species, especially the interspecific competition between two economically important cowpea thrips with the same ecological niche in a changing environment.

In the present paper, four cDNAs encoding the alpha and gamma subunits of elongation factor 1 (EF-1) were cloned and sequenced from Nilaparvata lugens, named NlEF-1α, NlEF-1γ, and its yeast-like symbiont (YLS), named YsEF-1α and YsEF-1γ, respectively. Comparisons with sequences from other species indicated a greater conservation for EF-1α than for EF-1γ. NlEF-1α has two identical copies. The deduced amino acid sequence homology of NlEF-1α and NlEF-1γ is 96 and 64%, respectively, compared with Homalodisca vitripennis and Locusta migratoria. The deduced amino acid sequence homology of YsEF-1α and YsEF-1γ is 96 and 74%, respectively, compared with Metarhizium anisopliae and Ophiocordyceps sinensis. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT–qPCR) analysis revealed that the expression level of NlEF-1α and NlEF-1γ mRNA in hemolymph, ovary, fat body and salivary glands were higher than the midgut and leg tissue. YsEF-1α and YsEF-1γ was highly expressed in fat body. The expression level of NlEF-1α was higher than that of NlEF-1γ. Through RNA interference (RNAi) of the two genes, the mortality of nymph reached 92.2% at the 11th day after treatment and the ovarian development was severely hindered. The RT–qPCR analysis verified the correlation between mortality, sterility and the down-regulation of the target genes. The expression and synthesis of vitellogenin (Vg) protein in insects injected with NlEF-1α and NlEF-1γ double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) was significantly lower than control groups. Attempts to knockdown the YsEF-1 genes in the YLS was unsuccessful. However, the phenotype of N. lugens injected with YsEF-1α dsRNA was the same as that injected with NlEF-1α dsRNA, possibly due to the high similarity (up to 71.9%) in the nucleotide sequences between NlEF-1α and YsEF-1α. We demonstrated that partial silencing of NlEF-1α and NlEF-1γ genes caused lethal and sterility effect on N. lugens. NlEF-1γ shares low identity with that of other insects and therefore it could be a potential target for RNAi-based pest management.

Callosobruchus chinensis (Linnaeus) is one of the most destructive pests of leguminous seeds. Genetic differentiation and diversity analysis of 345 C. chinensis individuals from 23 geographic populations using 20 polymorphic simple sequence repeats revealed a total of 149 alleles with an average of 7.45 alleles per locus. The average Shannon's information index was 1.015. The gene flow and genetic differentiation rate values at the 20 loci ranged from 0.201 to 1.841 and 11.0–47.2%, with averages of 0.849 and 24.4%, respectively. In the 23 geographic populations, the effective number of alleles and observed heterozygosity ranged from 1.441 to 2.218 and 0.191–0.410, respectively. Shannon's information index ranged from 0.357 to 0.949, with the highest value in Hohhot and the lowest in Rudong. In all comparisons, the fixation index (FST) values ranged from 0.049 to 0.441 with a total FST value of 0.254 among the 23 C. chinensis populations, indicating a moderate level of genetic differentiation and gene flow among these populations. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that the genetic variation within populations accounted for 76.7% of the total genetic variation. The genetic similarity values between populations varied from 0.617 to 0.969, whereas genetic distances varied from 0.032 to 0.483. Using unweighted pair-group method using arithmetical averages cluster analysis, the 23 geographic collections were classified into four distinct genetic groups but most of them were clustered into a single group. The pattern of the three concentrated groups from polymerase chain reactions analysis showed a somewhat different result with cluster.
