Previous research suggests the prevalence of mental health conditions among medical inpatients may be as high as 38%. Anecdotally, junior doctors report lacking the confidence, knowledge and skills to assess and treat patients with psychiatric conditions. Identifying this unmet need offers potential to improve standards of care and achieve parity of esteem between psychiatric and medical conditions within the general hospital. Aims:

To assess self-reported preparedness of newly-qualified Foundation Doctors to care for patients with acute or chronic psychiatric symptoms in comparison to physical health conditions.

In September of each year (2017, 2018, 2019), a survey was cascaded to all incoming Foundation Year 1 Doctors. For each respective year there were 1673, 961 & 1301 respondents. Respondents were asked to rate their agreement with statements on a Likert scale. Statements pertaining to mental health included “a) I am competent in acute mental health care provision, b) I am competent in chronic mental health care provision” and “I feel confident in prescribing the following drugs; c) drugs for mental health problems”. Comparison statements assessed confidence caring for medically unwell patients, performing practical procedures and prescribing drugs for physical health conditions.

Preparedness for acute and chronic mental health were lower than both physical health comparison items; preparedness to care for patients with critical illness (acute: r = 0.794, p < 0.001, chronic: r = 0.556, p < 0.001) and preparedness to perform practical procedures (acute: r = 0.724, p < 0.001, chronic: r = 0.433, p < 0.001).

Confidence prescribing mental health drugs was lower than all other comparison items (simple analgesia: r = 0.854, bronchodilators: r = 0.789, antimicrobials: r = 0.772, inhaled steroids: r = 0.720, intravenous fluids: r = 0.702, oral anti-diabetics: r = 0.611, anticoagulants: r = 0.515, narcotics: r = 0.514, insulin: r = 0.206; p < 0.001)

These results identify a disparity in foundation doctors’ self-reported preparedness to treat acute and chronic mental health conditions and prescribe psychotropic medications, compared to a variety of physical health domains. To our knowledge this is the first large-scale study to empirically test a potential discrepancy between newly-qualified doctors’ preparedness to treat patients’ mental and physical health needs. Medical school education and foundation training may therefore present a fruitful opportunity to improve care for patients with psychiatric conditions within general hospital settings.

Engagement with members is an important issue for the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) and an area for ongoing development. This is an issue that extends to Psychiatry trainees and the Psychiatric Trainees’ Committee (PTC) has adopted increasing engagement as one of its key aims. Divisional representatives in different areas of the UK had noted that trainees had limited knowledge of the PTC or its roles and projects both within the College and local areas. To improve this it was decided to pilot a project that established a social media platform for trainees to improve communication between the PTC, it's representatives and trainees. It was decided that Workplace (a professional version of Facebook) would be used. This had already been established in the Severn Deanery.

Northern Ireland (NI) and the East of England (EoE) deaneries were selected as pilot areas for the project. Preparation for the project included collaboration with trainees from the Severn deanery and meeting with the RCPsych Digital team. A scoping questionnaire was circulated to trainees in each deanery.

Following this, two closed groups were initiated on Workplace in August 2019 for Northern Ireland and East of England trainees.

Results from the survey sent prior to the social media pages being established indicated there was appetite among trainees for the project. The pages were established in July 2019. The pilot project was promoted by representatives.

In the initial phases, approximately 40% of trainees signed up. Information regarding college and local events, committee meeting updates and training opportunities was disseminated on the platform. There was evidence of early use by trainees outside of the representative group.

This however was not sustained and gradually use of the platform reduced over the pilot period, both in postings and membership. A further questionnaire circulated in July 2020 highlighted trainees’ concerns relating to the platform, including concerns around data protection and a high number of notifications associated with the Workplace medium. The ultimate impact on engagement was also felt to be minimal.

Following feedback and increasing usage costs by Workplace, it was decided not to continue with a nationwide role out of the project. COVID-19 has seen the successful use of platforms such as Microsoft Teams and these may be considered in the future, given their integration with existing trust systems.

Through consultation with foundation doctors on their psychiatry placements in Leeds, we established that they didn't feel the trustwide teaching programme met their needs, with them rating the relevance as 5.8 on a 1-10 Likert scale. They also reported their access to formal and informal teaching had been limited by COVID-19 restrictions. We aimed to create an accessible teaching programme that met their developmental needs as set out by the Foundation curriculum, as well as their confidence and skill set in dealing with common mental health presentations. Our supplementary aims were to promote psychiatry as a career and to provide supervised teaching opportunities to core trainees.

Having assessed the foundation doctors confidence in dealing with different scenarios, we created a 9 week teaching programme covering common mental health presentations they're likely to encounter during their training. The virtual sessions focus on what assessment and management skills would be expected for a foundation doctor, as well as when and how to access support and refer on. The programme was designed to be trainee led with the teaching being facilitated by core trainees as it was felt that they would best relate to the experiences and developmental needs of foundation doctors. This also provided the CTs with an opportunity to develop their teaching skills, something that has become more difficult during COVID.

Through weekly feedback of the sessions we were able to demonstrate that for 8 of the 9 sessions the foundation doctors rated them as being ‘useful’ or ‘very useful’ and we're currently reviewing the topic and materials for the outlying session.

Through self-assessed ratings before and after the programme, we demonstrated significant increases in confidence in dealing with all 9 of the scenarios. All of the foundation doctors indicated that they had found the programme beneficial.

As shown in the results, the programme has been well received by the foundation doctors who's confidence in dealing with a range of scenarios has improved. The programme has also been well received by the trust who have asked us to repeat the it for future foundation rotations and by core trainees who were grateful of the development opportunities that this provided. Further developments will include extending the programme for the duration of the placement to enable us to cover an enhanced range of presentations and to consolidate core skills.

During the pandemic, addiction psychiatry moved from face-to-face lectures (delivered by Addictions Psychiatrists) to bitesize pre-recorded lectures (delivered by clinical teaching fellows) alongside interactive tutorials (delivered by Addictions Psychiatrists). The Addictions Team developed an online tutorial (delivered via Blackboard Collaborate) containing a combination of information slides, case studies, interactive quizzes, and short videos. These were delivered ‘live’ to small groups of students in up to four simultaneous virtual classrooms on a 6-weekly rolling basis. We aimed to assess student and tutor feedback regarding the move to interactive online tutorials in addiction psychiatry.

Two questionnaires sought feedback from students and tutors, focussing on the change from face-to-face to virtual teaching during a 20-week period.

21 (of 161) students completed the questionnaire.

• • 100% ‘strongly agreed’ or ‘agreed’ that the content of the tutorial was relevant to learning outcomes.

• • 52% felt ‘somewhat comfortable’ unmuting their microphones to contribute verbally, contrasting to 24% feeling ‘not very’ or ‘extremely uncomfortable’. In practice, only 30% of students contributed verbally.

• • 57% felt most comfortable contributing via the written ‘chat’ function (rather than audio or camera).

• • 65% felt either ‘somewhat’ or ‘very comfortable’ turning their cameras on, but only 1 student turned their camera on across all tutorials.

• • 48% felt the tutorial was more accessible virtually than face-to-face; 5% considered it less so.

• • When COVID restrictions are lifted, 14% would prefer the tutorial to remain virtual, 53% would rather it returned face-to-face, and 33% had no preference.

• • 100% felt that students having their camera on would make their experience of delivering teaching ‘much better’ or ‘better’.

• • 71% of tutors felt that students contributed ‘slightly’ or ‘significantly’ less in the virtual classroom.

• • Only 29% of tutors found the experience of virtual teaching ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ enjoyable, contrasting 43% finding it ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ unenjoyable.

• • Several white space tutor comments suggested the lack of audio-visual engagement made teaching less rewarding, whilst also preventing them from adapting content, pace, and teaching style to suit the group's needs. Tutors felt that the ease of delivering teaching from any location was beneficial.

Virtual teaching has become embedded in medical education and will likely remain so post-pandemic. For it to be an effective and enjoyable experience, for both students and teachers, there needs to be adaptation of content, technology, etiquette and culture.

Better-informed trainees will have increased confidence and improved resilience which will have a positive impact on the workforce. To promote and celebrate diversity in psychiatric workforce it is imperative to acknowledge the above and provide adequate support to IMGs across UK.

Nearly two fifth of licensed doctors in NHS are from black and ethnic minorities. Studies have shown that International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are particularly prone to certain difficulties compared to UK graduates. IMGs are more likely to be subject to investigations by General Medical Council for concerns over clinical skills and knowledge, communication skills, lack of awareness of the laws and code of practice. This has been highlighted by GMC as well as Royal College of Psychiatrists. To promote and celebrate diversity in psychiatric workforce it is imperative to acknowledge this and provide adequate support to IMGs across UK.

An additional rotation wide induction programme was started for IMGs in August 2018 in West Yorkshire. This has continued on a 6 monthly basis for all new starters and last one was held on 21st of August 2019. Teaching included information about Good Medical Practice, confidentiality issues, principles of consent, information about living skills and practical teaching on phlebotomy and requesting investigations.

The doctors who attended these sessions found it to be very helpful and some suggested it to be a full day programme. According to the feedback collected there was a definite improvement in understanding noted by IMGs in most areas covered. This induction was also acknowledged in the School of Psychiatry conference in October 2019.

Considering the increasing numbers of International medical graduates it will be beneficial to arrange similar events at local level for easier accessibility. In line with RCPsych and GMC guidelines all trusts should be encouraged to offer IMG induction sessions locally.

This project aimed to further develop a teaching programme for Foundation Doctors attached to a psychiatry rotation. The purpose was threefold – to educate foundation doctors about important psychiatric topics; to encourage them to think about wider impacts of psychiatry; and to inspire them to consider psychiatric training in the longer term.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists’ mission statement includes actively promoting psychiatry as a career and improving knowledge of mental health, including its interactions with people's physical and social backgrounds. Targeting foundation doctors rotating into psychiatry posts is a good opportunity to achieve these objectives, as they will be the cross-speciality doctors of the future, and have specific learning needs given their unique rotations and new medical careers.

On one Wednesday morning per month Foundation Doctors had a specific teaching session for them. The sessions consisted of four 30-minute teaching blocks which, crucially, were given by foundation doctors. They were facilitated by a core psychiatry trainee, and the topics were decided by the doctor teaching each 30-minute block. The foundation doctors were able teach on any topic related to psychiatry that interested them. Feedback forms were developed and provided at the end of each session for the foundation doctors, as well as at the end of each recent foundation rotation, to get feedback on the overall quality of the course delivered.

The programme has now had 6 complete cohorts of foundation doctors. We have built a varied topic bank from past sessions, including the Mental Health Act, dementia, the Mind-Body Problem, psychiatry in video games and sociology of psychiatric illness, amongst other topics. All foundation doctors questioned have agreed or strongly agreed that the sessions were helpful for their psychiatric rotation and general medical training. Particularly praised aspects were the ability to discuss psychiatric topics that weren't normally discussed in an academic environment, being able to take ownership over learning and practicing giving teaching. Vitally, core trainee facilitators also found the sessions inspiring for their training.

The Foundation Teaching Programme has increased doctors’ knowledge of a range of psychiatric topics, the breadth of which and agency in choosing topics has increased engagement with psychiatry, regardless of planned medical training speciality. Areas to explore in the future include potentially opening attendance to medical students and physician associate students, and to other regions of the deanery. Evaluating the long-term impact of this training is also warranted.

Physician Associates (PAs) are healthcare professionals with a general medical education background, having completed a two-year postgraduate degree. Whilst the number of PAs employed in healthcare trusts continues to increase, the number working in mental health settings remains small.

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust employed two PAs two years ago. In August 2019, a third PA was recruited to work at Clock View Hospital, a general adult inpatient unit.

This survey aims to establish what level of understanding different members of the inpatient teams across the inpatient wards have of the tasks PAs are permitted to undertake and those they are not.

A survey was designed, listing 37 tasks, e.g. completing an admission clerking. For each task, the participant was asked whether a PA is allowed to complete it or not, with three options provided – “can carry out the task”, “cannot carry out the task” and “do not know.” A score of + 1 was awarded if the correct answer was provided, –1 for an incorrect answer and 0 if the respondent didn't know. The highest possible score for a completed survey was + 37 points; the lowest possible score was –37 points.

A sample of survey respondents was identified from the three general adult inpatient wards at Clock View Hospital and the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), comprising: senior doctors, junior trainees, Ward Manager, Deputy Ward Manager, Band 5 nurse and Assistant Practitioner.

Twenty-four members of staff completed the survey – 3 senior doctors, 4 junior trainees, 4 Ward Managers, 4 Deputy Ward Managers, 5 Band 5 nurses and 4 Assistant Practitioners. The respondents were distributed equally across the three general adult wards and the PICU. The highest survey score was 36 out of 37 (a Consultant); the lowest was 18 (a junior trainee). The lowest mean score was variable across the different grades of staff, with Consultants scoring highest at 29 and Assistant Practitioners and Ward Managers both scoring lowest at 25. There was little variability in mean score (only 2 points) across the three wards and PICU.

The results from this survey demonstrate that different members of the inpatient team have a good understanding of what tasks PAs are and are not permitted to. There is still a need to provide further education to inpatient staff to ensure they utilise the PA at Clock View Hospital appropriately and that the PA is able to develop his skill set.

This analysis aimed to establish the views of different members of the team across the three general adult wards and the Psychiatric Care Unit (PICU) at Clock View Hospital on the role of the PA.

A sample of members of staff was identified from across the three general adult inpatient wards at and the PICU, comprising: senior doctors (Consultants and Specialty Doctor), junior trainees (Core Trainee and Foundation Trainees), Ward Manager, Deputy Ward Manager, Band 5 nurse and Assistant Practitioner. Each member of staff was asked to answer the question “On a scale of 1 to 10 (with “1” being completely unhappy, “10” being completely happy), how happy are you to have a PA working on your ward?” Each staff member was then asked to provide comments on their views on the role of the PA.

Twenty-three members of staff participated – 3 x senior doctors, 4 x junior trainees, 4 Ward Managers, 4 Deputy Ward Managers, 4 x Band 5 nurses and 4 x Assistant Practitioners. The respondents were distributed equally across the three general adult wards and the PICU. All 23 members of staff provided a score of 10 out 10 to the question about how happy they were to have a PA working on the ward. Many of the staff members provided some very positive comments on their respective views about the role of the PA at Clock View Hospital. No negative comments were provided by any members of staff.

It is clear from the large sample of members of staff of different grade at Clock View Hospital that were surveyed that the PA has been a warmly received and welcome addition to the inpatient team and that the PA is viewed as having become an important and valued member of the inpatient team. This provides a strong argument for both Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, and other mental health trusts across the U.K., to consider employing more PAs to work in their inpatient units.

Somaliland is a de facto state in the horn of Africa. It unilaterally declared independence from rest of Somalia in 1991. Medical education in Somaliland started in the year 2000.

Aim of the study is to explore the feasibility of teaching program for the country by its future potential psychiatry educators. The initiative started in 2019 to seek trainees with interest in academic psychiatry and support them with medical education skills. This is intended to prepare them for leading future teaching roles in both undergraduate and residency/fellowship in psychiatry

Amoud University wanted to empower junior doctors at the university to have teaching skills needed to set up residency program. The Somaliland government asked Ethiopian ministry of health to offer psychiatry residency program for general practitioners in Somaliland to have future residency and fellowship in psychiatry. Several psychiatry trainees worked with the visiting professor from the United Kingdom who joined Somaliland medical school as visiting professor in psychiatry

The visiting professor supported the trainee in setting up a psychiatry undergraduate training curriculum in line with Somaliland medical school curriculum. Before the teaching methods were didactic and role play based. The faculty introduced different teaching methods including flipchart, small/large group teaching which was student centered education. Students received a online survey to reflect on psychiatry teaching they received. post course survey was conducted at the end of the teaching to evaluate the teaching initiative.

Survey revealed interesting pattern that students preferred class room based teaching in comparison to online teaching. 90 percent of the attendees showed interest in flipchart teaching compared to didactic model. They expressed increasing understanding of the subject matter when they read and discuss among themselves instead of lectures. 70% of students prefer more clinical teaching compared to online sessions.

52% liked the new teaching module compared to the lecturing sytle.

Supervision of early career psychiatrists to undertake future academic psychiatry roles is an important step in building psychiatry faculty in medical schools. As the case of Somaliland this retains trainees in teaching roles in the future to teach undergraduates mental health courses. The other benefit is empowering them to set up psychiatry training program to close the service delivery gap with skilled psychiatrists in the future. Somaliland plans to set up its psychiatry residency/fellowship programs soon after this initiative.

The RCPsych curriculum for core training in Psychiatry (2013) requires each Deanery to run regional MRCPsych teaching programme.

The East Midlands School of Psychiatry run a local MRCPsych course aimed at all core psychiatry trainees in the deanery. Before the pandemic, the course took place between two venues – Nottingham and Leicester. During the pandemic, the course was delivered via Microsoft teams. We aimed to collect the feedback from trainees regarding the course to help shape the MRCPsych Course programme according to their training needs.

Out of 44 trainees, 9 responded. 66.6% of the trainees who responded were CT1 and 33.3% CT2. 45% had passed Paper A and 55% had not passed any exams. 78% of them agreed and 11% strongly agreed that course was relevant to the clinical practice. 55.6% agreed that course was relevant to membership course. 44.4% agreed and 11% strongly agreed that mock exams were useful. 66.7% agreed and 11% strongly agreed that simulation case scenarios and workshops were useful for exam and clinical practice. 22.2% strongly agreed and 33.3% agreed that sessions were engaging and motivating. Overall experience of MRCPsych exam was rated as excellent (11%), good (55%), satisfactory (22%) and poor (11%).

Suggestions to add additional sessions included antiracism in psychiatry, more mock exams, practical management of cases, to organise more interactive sessions on Microsoft teams, in-depth coverage of exam topics, to organise full day teaching sessions instead of half day.

33.3% of trainees commented that COVID-19 had impacted on their ability to attend the exam as initially face to face sessions were cancelled till end of May 2020 and when started there were technical issues with the online platform

The aim of this medical education case report was to outline the development and outcomes of a reverse-mentorship project that enabled cross-generational collaborative learning. The project took the shape of a philosophy of psychiatry journal club facilitated by a psychiatry core trainee in west London, UK.

Reverse-mentorship reverses traditional roles of mentor and mentee. It is an increasingly fashionable concept in medical education. The junior mentors the senior clinician. The implicit learning outcomes include provision of a two-way learning process, development of mentoring skills for the more junior clinician and collaboration that builds social capital within the workplace. Reverse-mentorship is effective when the junior mentor is recognised for their expertise in a particular area. In this instance, the junior mentor has a special interest in the philosophy of psychiatry.

Junior mentor and senior mentees formed a monthly journal club. The club tracked arguments from anti- and biological psychiatry on the meaning of mental illness. The debate offered insight into a semantic analysis of mental illness and a deeper conceptual understanding of medicine. The learning material derived from the core concepts of philosophy and mental health (Fulford et al.). The role of the mentor was to facilitate group discussion around arguments from relevant papers. A survey, adapted from a recent reverse-mentorship review article, measured the quality of educational experience for mentor and mentees.

Overall, mentees (senior clinicians) agreed that the mentor (junior clinician) displayed attributes and behaviours for effective mentoring across most domains, including enthusiasm, effective communication, respect for mentee expertise and active listening to the needs of the mentee. The mentor was particularly impressed with the mentees’ openness to learn new concepts and respect shown. General reflections on the experience of reverse-mentorship were positive overall. A thematic review highlighted particular aspects, including: a good way to learn a new skill and great opportunity to develop professional skills of mentoring.

The importance of mentoring in medical education is well established. Reverse-mentorship is a new concept that looks to harness the unique qualities of millennials, including their aptitudes for empowerment, innovation and collaboration. This medical education case report shows that an enthusiastic junior clinician can successfully pilot an educational-mentoring scheme aimed at senior clinicians. To make more explicit the intuitive benefits of reverse-mentorship, longitudinal reviews are needed. However, this case report contributes important insights into this burgeoning field of medical education.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in young people living in Australia, accounting for 7.3% of all deaths among individuals aged 15–19 years. Historically, high levels of suicide have been recorded in Australian university students. This project aims to develop and test a massive online course-program (MOOC) for university students, underpinned by literature and strength-based suicide prevention principles, building resilience and awareness of mental health promoting activities.

A scoping review of the literature was undertaken to explore the effectiveness of current suicide prevention programs for undergraduate university students, and the effective elements contributing to the success of these programs. Six electronic databases were searched to identify relevant literature. Further, mental health consumers and university students were involved in co-producing the content of the six modules of the ‘Talk-to-me' MOOC.

Nine articles were included in the review, discussing four types of programs including; gatekeeping, education, promotional messaging and online consultation. It was apparent from this review that there is a significant dearth of interventions and programs currently available to reduce the risk of suicide among undergraduate students, with many of the programs having limited efficacy. Despite this, a number of program elements were identified as beneficial to preventing suicide among post-secondary students including upskilling of students, and improving resilience, and self-management. These findings and further consultation with mental health consumers and undergraduate university students underpinned the development of the content of the ‘Talk-to-me' MOOC which is tailored to meet the needs of university students. The MOOC contains six modules: Mental fitness; strategies to increase mental fitness; self-harm; suicidal behaviour in young adults; interventions for suicidal behaviour; and, gatekeeper interventions. Two case study senarios depicting mental health challenges commonly experienced by yound adults portraying appropriate crisis communication skills were developed and filmed complementing the six ‘Talk-to-me' modules.

Overall, studies included in the review provide evidence to suggest that preventative programs, incorporating an educational component may be effective to be used in the MOOC to improving help-seeking behaviours among post-secondary education students. Findings from this review have underpinned the development of the ‘Talk-to-Me' MOOC which was launched in March 2020. To date this MOOC has enrolled over 45,000 participants from over 150 countries, with the average age of users being 24 years. Collectively, this line of work highlights that MOOCs are an effective means of mental health promotion to young adults.

Healthcare workers are exposed to both physical and mental demands in the hospital environment; recently intensified by overstretching staff and resources during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Despite healthcare workers banding together, physician burnout is more prevalent than ever before due to emotional, physical and mental exhaustion. Firstly, this poster aims to expose the prevalence of burnout among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Secondly, to highlight the interventions and strategies to help minimise burnout among healthcare workers.

I will focus on reviewing clinical trials with a particular focus on healthcare workers affected by burnout within the COVID-19 pandemic timeframe. Therefore, narrowing my search to 20 trials within the past 12 months using the following restricted search criteria: ‘burnout’, ‘covid-19’ and ‘healthcare’. Furthermore, commenting on strategies and interventions to minimise burnout by stretching my criteria to interventions trialled within the last 24 months. This is due to limited data and trial evidence for burnout strategies within the last 12 months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burnout is on the rise among healthcare workers across the globe, 47% of healthcare staff are expressing an element of burnout worldwide. With growing concerns of healthcare staff developing long term mental health implications as a result of work-related stress. At present, one third of frontline staff are experiencing depression and distress; which must be addressed. Reviewing recent trials has highlighted a number of successful strategies for approaching burnout including: app technology, talking therapy, staff support and internet-based resources. App-related technology and web resources have shown to be particularly beneficial among recent trials, with limited participation and engagement for support groups/talking therapy.

A significant rise in physician burnout and distress during COVID-19 has been noted in various trials. Interventions specifically related to burnout within COVID-19 are limited due to a low yield of completed trials; however, a couple of trials have found an improvement in COVID-19 related stress among healthcare workers using app-related technology. Internet based intervention is cheap, widely accessible and a non-judgemental method for seeking help, especially within a profession where burnout is heavily stigmatized.

In response to the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ recruitment strategy, a bi-annual Psychiatry School event was set up in the North West of England. The Psychiatry School aims to inspire medical students and foundation doctors to choose a career in Psychiatry with two days of workshops on different sub-specialties and various aspects of the career pathway. A previous service evaluation has shown attending the event improves attitudes towards psychiatry.

The aim is to assess whether improving attitudes to psychiatry has been sustained and gain a clearer understanding of the motivators and deterrents in choosing a career in Psychiatry to better inform future events.

An online questionnaire about positive and negative aspects of psychiatry was sent to attendees of the Autumn North West Psychiatry School 2020 before and after the event.

The total number of completed questionnaires was 62.

53.6% people were considering applying for core psychiatry training prior to the event and this rose to 85.3% in the post event questionnaire.

Motivators for a career in psychiatry prior to the event included having a better holistic understanding of patients and wide range of sub-specialities. There was a common theme of interest in research opportunities. Dynamic patient-doctor relationship, exploring issues in depth and treating diverse populations were key motivators.

It is encouraging to note that 100% responders felt their positive views on psychiatry were validated.

The majority of deterrents were disregarded and attendees felt positive about choosing a career in psychiatry.

Following the event, the only negative view on a career in Psychiatry was the concern about the potential impact on one's own mental health. This is an important issue (highlighted in the Royal College of Psychiatrists Position Statement) that deserves consideration at future events to highlight potential effects on Psychiatrists wellbeing and how these can be avoided or mitigated.

The wide variety of sub-specialities and opportunities for research were key areas that motivated attendees and we will continue to deliver engaging workshops around these themes.

A low level of psychiatric recruitment is a global issue[1]. The RCPsych & UK Mental Health Trusts jointly run School Events as part of a recruitment strategy. The North West has been running such events for the past years. After our first virtual event, we compare the quality, effectiveness and experience of a face-to-face (F2F) recruitment programme in 2018 with our first remote recruitment programme in 2020. In a world of fast paced technology, we reflect on what lies in the horizon for international psychiatric recruitment.

The recruitment programme was organised by 4 psychiatric trainees affiliated to each mental health trust. A two-day remote programme on the Zoom platform comprising of 45-minute slots was created. Through their own experiences of inspirational speakers, trainees contacted speakers representing different specialities, teaching styles and philosophical outlooks.

Pre and Post Programme questionnaires and certificates of attendance were shared with speakers and attendees. These were compared with Pre and Post Programme questionnaires from the F2F event in 2018.

When compared to the 2018 F2F programme, the 2020 virtual recruitment programme attracted a higher number and wider variety of applicants, in gender (62% female/38%male), nationality (UK 79%/Non-UK 22%), as well as wider distribution in age, UK deanery and training position. Despite the elimination of cost, the quality of teaching was rated higher than F2F due to the availability of high quality speakers (100% would recommend to a friend; 72% rated excellent). Whilst the programme was effective in changing minds, this did not exceed F2F recruitment rates. F2F recruitment feedback focussed on inclusion of sub-specialities, whereas virtual programme feedback focussed on ways to enhance interaction. Feedback focussed on technological applications such as interactive quizzes, breakout rooms, play-acting, and having the benefit of clinical vignettes or speakers’ personal stories to bring talks to life.

The use of remote technology transcended geographical and demographic frontiers. A variety of high-quality speakers, directly appealing to an international cohort were sourced, at no monetary cost. In future, the budget will be used in interactive applications, and time-limited session recordings. As the participants hungered for personal connections, we recommend a blended programme, with links to taster sessions, retaining the advantages of both strategies.

Mental health disorders in children are largely unrecognized in low- and middle-income countries like Pakistan. Teachers, due to their interactions and time spent with children, are important elements in promoting child mental health. Despite this, little importance is given to school mental health (SMH) in the country, and teachers’ training in SMH is almost non-existent. With less than ten child and adolescent psychiatrists, recruiting teachers is vital to provide mental health care to children and adolescents, the majority of the country's population. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a SMH training intervention for teachers in Pakistan.

A 3-day training intervention was planned for school teachers in collaboration with International Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions. The School Mental Health curriculum by the World Health Organization and Stan Kutcher's Mental Health Literature were adapted after literature review and discussions with experts, and administered as Blended Learning. The intervention was evaluated using pre-workshop, post-workshop and overall feedback surveys. SPSS 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., USA) software was used for descriptive analysis. For open ended questions, central themes were identified, tabulated, and analyzed descriptively.

A total of 63 participants registered for the workshop. The participants’ mean age was 36.0 years, with 86% women and 14% men. Participants were mostly teachers, however, principals, administrators and counsellors also attended. Participants’ reasons for attending were that they wanted to ‘increase their knowledge’ and learn ‘practical management’ of mental health issues. When asked about student wellbeing, 43% participants said it was a neglected area. Overall, 86.9% of participants felt the objectives were met well or very well and 87.61% stated there was adequate time for discussion. In addition, 90.47% participants responded that facilitators explained concepts well and 94.39% said facilitators answered questions well. Half of all Blended Learning activities were viewed by more than 50% of participants. Activity views decreased by 63.41% from the pre-workshop activities to day 3 activities. Improvements suggested by participants included taking a more problem-solving approach and focusing on the local context.

Evidence-based SMH interventions that train teachers are much-needed in the local resource-constrained settings. This intervention met its objectives effectively, however, Blended Learning was not well-received. We have studied learning analytics and identified the potential learner's profile of teachers as students. Adult learning principles should be implemented in future endeavours. This is a flagship project for future international collaborations between mental health professionals for cross-cultural knowledge exchange.

Our aim was to develop an easily accessible, relevant and deliverable resource to meet the training requirements of the new foundation curriculum for Foundation Trainees in the West Midlands. The virtual resource needed to provide information at the correct knowledge depth, whilst also being flexible enough to allow trainees to access the materials despite the challenges of remote working. The West Midlands currently holds approximately 1,300 places for foundation training with an increase in numbers planned for 2023 and 2024.

The United Kingdom Foundation Programme (FP) is a two-year structured, supervised training programme of learning in the workplace developed to prepare medical graduates for speciality training. The Foundation Curriculum is currently being updated in line with the GMC Standards for Post Graduate Curricula to reflect the developing and contemporaneous training needs of doctors and is expected to go live in August 2021.

Though the foundation curriculum is broad and does not usually include specific diseases, it is recognised that mental health disorders are common and are frequently missed. The new curriculum makes a specific statement regarding the importance of mental health and specifies a syllabus covering this important area of medical practice

Around 80% of doctors are expected to have exposure to a community medicine placement, with around 40% expected to have placement within a specific mental health setting. Though other community placements may provide some exposure to the acute challenges of mental health, this is not guaranteed.

To assist in meeting the FP requirement for training in mental health we developed an online resource for all West Midlands trainees, with lectures and information available that covers all of the core curriculum requirements for the FP. These resources can be accessed at any time of the day, at any point of foundation training, with each module certificated to show evidence of the attainment of foundation competencies ready for students ARCP (Annual Review of Competency Progression).

A programme of evaluation and effectiveness will be undertaken when the new curriculum goes live.

There is an expected expansion in the number of training Foundation doctors within the next 5 years; therefore the demand for this training is expected to increase over time. As the understanding and awareness of the interaction between physical health and mental health continues to develop, we expected the use of this resource grow into the future.

To offer regular continuous professional development opportunities covering both clinical and non-clinical skills to trainees and trainers and enhance their experience and skills to increase their wellbeing and resilience.

There are approximately 50,000 doctors undertaking postgraduate training in England. Of these, 10% (5000) are taking approved time out of training at any time. A 2017 HEE survey revealed that doctors returning to work reported numerous concerns. Based on these and with the backdrop of the Bawa-Gaba case HEE's Supported return to Training programme (SuppoRTT) was developed.

We at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust devised a unique “Mindful SuppoRTT” initiative and were successful in securing funding from HEE. Part of which was the organisation of a conference aimed at various groups of doctors including those who have previously had time out of training, are currently out of training and those considering time out.

The Sheffield Mindful SuppoRTT Programme not only aimed to provide a structured and systematic process for planning and returning from absence, but also focussed on enhancing performance through promoting the wellbeing of participants and supporting them with important clinical and non-clinical skills.

2-day twice yearly conferences, which covered training on speciality specific as well as non-technical skills were organised. The clinical workshops covered interactive sessions of common and emergency clinical scenarios. A wide range of non-technical skills such as an introduction to mindfulness, tai chi, resilience, team-working and leadership, “Thinking Environment” and meditation were introduced and developed using bespoke training. Feedback was collected at the end of each conference day. The attendees were asked to use a 5-point Likert scale (5 being the highest) to rate their satisfaction with the day and to highlight which sessions they found most and least useful.

The attendee satisfaction rate was high. The first conference had ratings of 56% of attendees scoring 5 (excellent) and the remainder scoring 4 (very good). The second conference achieved even higher satisfaction ratings with 94% of attendees scoring 5 and the remainder scoring 4.

The conference had high attendee satisfaction. The hope is to expand on its success and open it up to delegates from all specialities within HEE South Yorkshire and the Humber. Evaluation of the long-term impact of this programme is also warranted.

In 2019, the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) launched the “Psych Star” scheme for medical students with an interest in psychiatry. The one-year scheme provides Psych Stars with a matched mentor, free registration at the RCPsych's International Congress, financial support for psychiatry-related activities, journal subscriptions and access to two online learning platforms. This project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the scheme in supporting Psych Stars to explore their interest in psychiatry and in promoting psychiatry as a career choice, through use of a survey for both Psych Stars and mentors.

Surveys were sent to all Psych Stars and mentors from the first cohort of the scheme. The mentor and student surveys contained a mixture of ranking, multiple choice, closed-ended and open-ended questions. Questions examined: clarity of the scheme's aims and objectives; benefits of each aspect of the scheme; impact of the scheme on application to Core Training; benefits and barriers to successful mentorship; adequacy of mentor support from the RCPsych and suggestions to improve the scheme.

Six Psych Stars and nine mentors completed the respective surveys. All Psych Stars stated the scheme was enjoyable. Five Psych Stars were more likely to apply for Core Training because of the scheme. All Psych Stars identified the most beneficial aspect of the scheme being the funded place at the RCPsych International Congress. Other aspects highly ranked included: funding to explore areas of psychiatry of interest and the opportunity to be an ambassador for psychiatry. All Psych Stars found the mentorship useful.

Mentors supported Psych Stars by providing career advice, suggesting relevant conferences to attend and assisting Psych Stars make decisions on how to use their allocated funding. Barriers to mentorship that were identified included: geographical separation, limitations related to the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of time. For mentors, areas for improvement included clearer aims and objectives and more support from the RCPsych.

Both mentors and Psych Stars suggested forming a network of Psych Stars and mentors would be useful to share ideas and experiences.

This evaluation shows that the Psych Star scheme successfully supports Psych Stars to explore their interest in psychiatry, and promotes psychiatry as a career choice. This survey has been helpful in identifying what aspects of the scheme are particularly attractive, and also, importantly, how the Psych Stars scheme can be improved for future cohorts. The survey will be delivered to all future annual cohorts of Psych Stars and mentors.

Surrey and Borders NHS Foundation Trust's AVATr (Augmented Virtual-reality Avatar in Training) is a unique ground-breaking Virtual Patient Simulation System, which uses the Xenodu platform to train learners in essential clinical and complex communication skills. Over 30 patient scenarios have been developed after identifying learner-specific development needs, including exploration of overt psychosis, assessment of capacity, sharing bad news, and neglect in care home residents. Actors are filmed responding to several domains of clinical questions, further categorised into three narrative-modes of being ‘Engaged, Neutral or Disengaged’, to build a bank of scenarios. During the session, the trainee is projected on to a large screen, using a camera and video special effects, which results in a life-like interaction with the Virtual Patient. Trainees can view themselves interacting with the Virtual Patient in real-time, from a unique ‘out-of-body' perspective, immersed in a custom-designed interactive virtual environment. The simulation facilitator engages with the learner and determines the appropriate choices of responses for the Virtual Patient and if needed, can prompt with explorative cues to continue the narrative-linked conversation. AVATr model pioneered in United Kingdom the use of an innovative ‘self-observational approach’ in Psychiatry training. This is different to a first-person perspective used in virtual or augmented-reality systems in several clinical specialties. The use of Facilitated-Debrief and Peer-Debrief in sessions, render another layer to the simulation experience.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we evolved the AVATr model to remote or hybrid sessions, where simulations were digitally enhanced, and have been run through Microsoft Teams. The simulation facilitator is connected to a multi-user video call, enabling the Virtual Patient to be projected as an attendee using Microsoft Teams.

The hybrid model of AVATr has received tremendous feedback, as it now simulates video-consultations that a vast majority of Psychiatry trainees, especially community-based, undertake due to COVID-19 restrictions. The format of AVATr simulation sessions has remained unchanged, and the remote delivery has been particularly successful as it allows trainees to log in from different remote locations to come together for an interactive training session, without any physical restrictions.

Since 2015, our simulation platform has been utilised for Post-Graduate Medical Education, to enhance essential professional skills and stimulate professional growth. Currently the hybrid model of AVATr is being expanded to Nursing, Psychology and Allied Health Professional (AHP) clinical training streams, along with Undergraduate Medical Education, to address identified gaps in face-to-face training amidst COVID-19 pandemic.
