The Southern Ocean around Antarctica is no longer free from invasive marine species. The North Atlantic spider crab Hyas araneus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Majidae) has been recorded for the first time from the Antarctic Peninsula. Isolated for at least 25 million years, the endemic Antarctic Southern Ocean marine fauna is now being exposed to human-mediated influx of exotic species. Invasive species and polar warming combined can foster the probability of arrival and colonization by non-indigenous species, with unpredictable consequences for the Antarctic marine biota.

The diet of grey-headed albatrosses at Diego Ramírez was analysed and compared to that of the sympatric black-browed albatross. Diet composition was inferred from an analysis of prey hard parts present in 103 chick regurgitates obtained during breeding seasons 2000, 2001 and 2002. The squid Martialia hyadesi predominated in the diet samples in 2001 and 2002 (89% and 81% of reconstituted mass), but was absent from the 2000 samples. Reconstituted mean mass per sample in 2000 was significantly lower than in 2001 and 2002. Chick growth rate during 2000 was also the lowest recorded. This suggests that M. hyadesi plays an important role in the breeding performance of grey-headed albatrosses at Diego Ramírez. Low presence of M. hyadesi in grey-headed albatrosses' diet at South Georgia in 2000, a year with significant low breeding success, suggests ocean-wide processes affecting the availability of this prey to both populations simultaneously. Overlap in diet composition, and inferred feeding areas, between the sympatric albatross species at Diego Ramírez was minimal. Grey-headed albatrosses fed mainly on species associated with the Antarctic Polar Front, whereas black-browed albatrosses consumed benthopelagic species frequently caught in fishing operations in southern Chile.

Sterechinus neumayeri is an abundant regular sea urchin that lives in the shallow Antarctic waters. This organism has been used as a model system in many fields of the Antarctic biology. Yet, understanding of the evolutionary identity of the species, such as its phylogenetic relationships and divergence time, remains limited. Here, we reconstructed the molecular phylogenies of the species together with two sea urchin species in southernmost South America (Loxechinus albus and Pseudechinus magellanicus), a parechinid species (Paracentrotus lividus) and three strongylocentrotid species (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, S. intermedius, and Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) using mitochondrial DNA sequences of 12S rDNA-tRNA(gln) region (877nt) and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI, 1079nt). The rate of sequence evolution and the divergence time of the species were then estimated from the trees. The phylogenetic trees reveal that S. neumayeri is a sister group to the lineage of L. albus and P. lividus, and separated from the lineage 24–35 million years ago (m.y.a.). The divergence between S. neumayeri and L. albus coincides with the separation of Antarctica from South America, suggesting that the tectonic event must have provoked the cladogenesis of the species through vicariance.

Many remote and local climate variabilities influence Antarctic sea ice at different time scales. The strongest sea ice teleconnection at the interannual time scale was found between El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and a high latitude climate mode named the Antarctic Dipole. The Antarctic Dipole is characterized by an out-of-phase relationship between sea ice and surface temperature anomalies in the South Pacific and South Atlantic, manifesting itself and persisting 3–4 seasons after being triggered by the ENSO forcing. This study examines the life cycles of ENSO warm and cold events in the tropics and associated evolution of the ADP in high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. In evaluating the mechanisms that form the ADP, the study suggests a synthesized scheme that links these high latitude processes with ENSO teleconnection in both the Pacific and Atlantic basins. The synthesized scheme suggests that the two main mechanisms responsible for the formation/maintenance of the Antarctic Dipole are the heat flux due to the mean meridional circulation of the regional Ferrel Cell and regional anomalous circulation generated by stationary eddies. The changes in the Hadley Cell, the jet stream in the subtropics, and the Rossby Wave train associated with ENSO link the tropical forcing to these high latitude processes. Moreover, these two mechanisms operate in phase and are comparable in magnitude. The positive feedback between the jet stream and stationary eddies in the atmosphere, the positive feedback within the air-sea-ice system, and the seasonality all reinforce the anomalies, resulting in persistent Antarctic Dipole anomalies.

Hypotheses concerning the diversification of notothenioid fishes have relied extensively on estimates of divergence times using molecular clock methods. The timing of diversification of the cold adapted antifreeze glycoprotein (AFGP)-bearing Antarctic notothenioid clade in the middle to late Miocene has been correlated with the onset of polar climatic conditions along the Antarctic Continental Shelf. Critical examination of the previous molecular clock analyses of notothenioids reveals several problems associated with heterogeneity of nucleotide substitution rates among lineages, the application of potentially inappropriate nucleotide substitution rates, and the lack of confidence intervals for divergence time estimates. In this study, the notothenioid partial gene mtDNA 12S-16S rRNA (PG-rRNA) molecular clock was reanalysed using a tree-based maximum likelihood strategy that attempts to account for rate heterogeneity of nucleotide substitution rates among lineages using the penalized likelihood method, and bootstrap resampling to estimate confidence intervals of divergence time estimates. The molecular clock was calibrated using the notothenioid fossil Proeleginops grandeastmanorum. Divergence time estimates for all nodes in the PG-rRNA maximum likelihood tree were substantially older than previous estimates. In particular, the estimated age of the AFGP-bearing Antarctic notothenioid clade predates the onset of extensive sea ice and development of polar conditions by at least 10 million years. Despite caveats involving the fossil calibration and limitations of the PG-rRNA dataset, these divergence time estimates provide initial observations for the development of a novel model of the diversification of cold adapted Antarctic notothenioid fishes.

An individual-based model is presented which describes the spatial and temporal evolution of phytoplankton growth in terms of a Lagrangian ensemble of cells affected by various physical and biological forcing factors. The motion of cells develops according to a turbulent velocity field which simulates the Antarctic mixed layer during the summer. The cell growth is a function of the irradiance regime, nutrient availability and the vertical position of the individual with respect to the other cells (in order to evaluate the self-shading effect). The values of photosynthetic parameters used to simulate the photophysiological response of the organisms are derived from measurements collected in the Ross Sea. In contrast to previous individual-based descriptions, all the physical and biological processes involved are explicitly reproduced in their dynamical features. Coupling different mixing levels with photoacclimation strategies leads to a wide range of photophysiological responses which underline the role of individual physiological histories in determining the growth of the population as a whole. Simulated photosynthetic parameters, chlorophyll a concentrations and integrated primary production correspond closely to in situ data and confirm that photoacclimation to low irradiance and strong mixing regimes may be considered as crucial factors in the photosynthetic performance of Antarctic phytoplankton.

The concentrations of major, minor and trace metals were measured in water samples collected from five shallow Antarctic lakes (Carezza, Edmonson Point (No 14 and 15a), Inexpressible Island and Tarn Flat) found in Terra Nova Bay (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) during the Italian Expeditions of 1993-2001. The total concentrations of a large suite of elements (Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ga, Gd, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nd, Ni, Pb, Pr, Rb, Sc, Si, Sr, Ta, Ti, U, V, Y, W, Zn and Zr) were determined using spectroscopic techniques (ICP-AES, GF-AAS and ICP-MS). The results are similar to those obtained for the freshwater lakes of the Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica, and for the McMurdo Dry Valleys. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA) were performed to identify groups of samples with similar characteristics and to find correlations between the variables. The variability observed within the water samples is closely connected to the sea spray input; hence, it is primarily a consequence of geographical and meteorological factors, such as distance from the ocean and time of year. The trace element levels, in particular those of heavy metals, are very low, suggesting an origin from natural sources rather than from anthropogenic contamination.

For more than a century it has been known that the abyssal basins of the world ocean are primarily occupied by relatively cold and fresh waters that originate in the Southern Ocean. Their distinguishing characteristics are acquired by exposure of surface and shelf waters to ‘ventilation’ by the polar atmosphere and to the melting and freezing of ice over and near the Antarctic continental shelf. Subsequent mixing with deep water over the continental slope results in ‘Bottom Water’ that forms the southern sinking limb of the global ‘Thermohaline Circulation.’ Over recent decades, oceanographers have wrestled with a variety of bottom water and thermohaline circulation problems, ranging from basic definitions to forcing and formation sites, source components and properties, generation processes and rates, mixing and sinking, pathways and transports. A brief review of these efforts indicates both advances and anomalies in our understanding of Antarctic Bottom Water production and circulation. Examples from ongoing work illustrate increasing interest in the temporal variability of bottom water in relation to climate change.

The physical elements of the circulation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) are reviewed. A picture of the circulation is sketched by means of recent observations from the WOCE decade. We present and discuss the role of forcing functions (wind stress, surface buoyancy flux) in the dynamical balance of the flow and in the meridional circulation and study their relation to the ACC transport. The physics of form stress at tilted isopycnals and at the ocean bottom are elucidated as central mechanisms in the momentum balance. We explain the failure of the Sverdrup balance in the ACC circulation and highlight the role of geostrophic contours in the balance of vorticity. Emphasis is on the interrelation of the zonal momentum balance and the meridional circulation, the importance of diapycnal mixing and eddy processes. Finally, new model concepts are described: a model of the ACC transport dependence on wind stress and buoyancy flux, based on linear wave theory; and a model of the meridional overturning and the mean density structure of the Southern Ocean, based on zonally averaged dynamics and thermodynamics with eddy parametrization.

Energy transfer in microbial food webs is partly quantified by the relationship between bacterial and algal biomass. Tight spatial relationships suggest active bacterial assimilation of dissolved photosynthate in temperate marine and fresh waters. However, studies in the Antarctic suggest that bacterial biomass generation from algal-derived dissolved organic matter is highly variable across seasons and habitats. Regression analysis was used to measure how bacteria covaried with algae in sea ice and water column habitats at three sites around Antarctica. Bacteria and algae were positively related in sea ice of the Weddell Sea during early winter 1992 (r2 = 0.16, slope = 0.24) and across sea ice and upper water column habitats of the Ross Sea during summer 1999 (r2 = 0.52, slope = 0.50). Conversely, bacteria and algae exhibited no discernible relationship in the water column and first year ice habitats of the Western Antarctic Peninsula region in winter 2001 (r2 = 0.003, slope = −0.04). Low algal production and residual biomass probably limited bacterial production and facilitated bacteria-algae uncoupling in winter sea ice of the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Winter sea ice algal biomass was probably limited by a relatively late date of initial ice formation, reduced multi-year ice coverage, and a lack of radiant energy in the winter ice pack.

To study how teleosts have modified their immunoglobulin structures to adapt to the Antarctic environment, we investigated Trematomus bernacchii IgM at protein and gene levels. Serum IgM was purified, characterized and quantified. The nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of IgL and IgH were determined. Upon comparison with other teleosts, T. bernacchii IgH showed a higher hydrophilic character and the presence of two remarkable insertions, probably increasing the flexibility of the molecule. To investigate the amplitude of the antibody repertoire, a VH library was constructed. The analysis of rearranged VH/D/JH transcripts revealed a high occurrence of the RGYW motif and a clear bias in the usage of serine codons. Diversity generated by insertions/deletions occurred more often than in other species. VH sequences fell into only two gene families referred to as Trbe VH I and Trbe VH II. The deduced amino acid sequence of the membrane region was found to be the longest and an F/Y substitution was observed at a highly conserved position. Models of the transmembrane helices of T. bernacchii and other teleost Ig were constructed by molecular dynamics. Finally, the analysis of the antibody specificity revealed the presence of antibodies specific to the proteins of nematode parasites.

Human faecal waste has been discarded at inland Antarctic sites for over 100 years, but little is known about the long-term survival of faecal microorganisms in the Antarctic terrestrial environment or the environmental impact. This study identified viable faecal microorganisms in 30–40 year old human faeces sampled from the waste dump at Fossil Bluff Field Station, Alexander Island, Antarctic Peninsula. Viable aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were predominantly spore-forming varieties (Bacillus and Clostridium spp.). Faecal coliform bacteria were not detected, indicating that they are less able to survive Antarctic environmental conditions than spore-forming bacteria. In recent years, regional warming around the Antarctic Peninsula has caused a decrease in permanent snow cover around nunataks and coastal regions. As a result, previously buried toilet pits, depots and food dumps are now melting out and Antarctic Treaty Parties face the legacy of waste dumped in the Antarctic terrestrial environment by earlier expeditions. Previous faecal waste disposal on land may now start to produce detectable environmental pollution as well as potential health and scientific problems.

Despite being one of the largest biomes on earth, sea ice ecosystems have only received intensive study over the past 30 years. Sea ice is a unique habitat for assemblages of bacteria, algae, protists, and invertebrates that grow within a matrix dominated by strong gradients in temperature, salinity, nutrients, and UV and visible radiation. A suite of physiological adaptations allow these organisms to thrive in ice, where their enormous biomass makes them a fundamental component of polar ecosystems. Sea ice algae are an important energy and nutritional source for invertebrates such as juvenile krill, accounting for up to 25% of total annual primary production in ice-covered waters. The ability of ice algae to produce large amounts of UV absorbing compounds such as mycosporine-like amino acids makes them even more important to organisms like krill that can incorporate these sunscreens into their own tissues. Furthermore, the nutrient and light conditions in which sea ice algae thrive induce them to synthesize enhanced concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids, a vital constituent of the diet of grazing organisms, especially during winter. Finally, sea ice bacteria and algae have become the focus of biotechnology, and are being considered as proxies of possible life forms on ice-covered extraterrestrial systems. An analysis of how the balance between sea ice and pelagic production might change under a warming scenario indicates that when current levels of primary production and changes in the areas of sea ice habitats are taken into account, the expected 25% loss of sea ice over the next century would increase primary production in the Southern Ocean by approximately 10%, resulting in a slight negative feedback on climate warming.

The nototheniid Pleuragramma antarcticum (Boulenger, 1902), is the dominant pelagic fish in waters of the continental shelf in High Antarctic regions. Larvae and juveniles of this species comprise the majority of ichthyoplankton at many locations around Antarctica including the Weddell Sea and the western Ross Sea, where it may amount to 98% of the ichthyoplankton. Its life cycle has been the subject of a number of studies but spawning and embryological development are still uncertain. Eggs with embryos and newly hatched larvae of P. antarcticum were collected in November 2002 near the Italian Antarctic station at Terra Nova Bay through holes drilled in the sea ice. Eggs and yolk-sac larvae were floating among the platelet ice below the solid cap of congelation ice. Eggs were 2.2–2.5 mm in diameter and contained embryos at an advanced stage of development. Hatching occurred from mid-November onwards, and newly hatched larvae averaged 9.3 mm SL. This paper provides the detailed description of embryos and newly hatched larvae in terms of pigmentation pattern and morphometric characteristics, thus allowing a significant advance in our understanding of the early life history of P. antarcticum in the Ross Sea, and extending the knowledge of the life cycle of this key Antarctic species.

The non-long terminal repeat retrotransposons Rex1 and Rex3 were identified in 13 species of Antarctic fishes from five families of the suborder Notothenioidei. Partial reverse transcriptase gene sequences were characterized for Notothenia coriiceps, Trematomus newnesi and Dissostichus mawsoni (Nototheniidae), and Gymnodraco acuticeps (Bathydraconidae). Rex1 and Rex3 both formed a notothenioid-specific monophyletic group compared to the corresponding elements from other fishes. They globally evolved under purifying selection, showing their activity during notothenioid evolution. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis of the chromosomal distribution of Rex1 and Rex3 was performed for several notothenioid fish species. Rex1 was generally less abundant than Rex3, which was widely scattered on the chromosomes with more intense hybridization patterns in some specific zones. Particularly, Rex3 accumulated in Chionodraco hamatus in pericentromeric areas, short arms of some pairs as well as in an intercalary band in the long arm of the Y chromosome similarly to a previously described DNA transposon. Such pattern similarities suggest the presence of autosomal and gonosomal regions of preferential accumulation for different types of repeated elements in notothenioid genomes. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first description and analysis of retrotransposable elements in Antarctic fish genomes.

Antarctic vegetation offers excellent opportunities for the study of dynamics and biodiversity of natural systems with high environmental sensitivity. This paper addresses the methodological and technical aspects for the minimum area (MA) assessment (the smallest area which adequately represents community composition) and compares three different sampling approaches for vegetation at Jubany, King George Island. Five target communities, among the most widespread and representative of a wide range of floristic richness and dynamism, were selected through the phytosociological study. The minimum area, determined from four methods, ranged between 2 and 24 m2. Similar values have been obtained for the polar desert vegetation of the Northern Hemisphere. Three sampling approaches were tested in the five communities: the phytosociological survey with 100 cm grid, the phytosociological survey with 5 cm grid, the point intercept with 10 cm grid. To achieve comparable data a standard plot, satisfying the MA requirements of all the communities, has been adopted for all the study sites. The results indicate that the integration of the three methods provides the highest level of information, especially in respect of limitations on field sampling and logistics.

Vellaria zucchellii sp. nov. is described from coastal sediment samples from Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea, Antarctica, 74°40′28.1″S, 164°04′11.6″E, Tethys Bay, 25 m depth). This organic-walled monothalamous (single chambered) foraminifer is characterized by a wide, prominent aperture that facilitates attachment to larger particles (small sand grains or other foraminiferal shells). It shares this feature with the two other known species of Vellaria, both of which were described from an Indian estuary. Phylogenetic analysis of small subunit rRNA gene sequences suggest that V. zucchellii is related to the genus Psammophaga. However, the new species lacks the mineral grain inclusions that are characteristic of Psammophaga. The description of this new organic-walled monothalamous foraminiferal species further documents the high taxonomic diversity of these delicate and abundant protists in the polar benthic communities.

Advective processes are recognized as being important in structuring and maintaining marine ecosystems. In the Southern Ocean advective effects are perhaps most clearly observed because the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) provides a connection between most parts of the system, including open ocean and continental shelf regions. The ACC also provides a mechanism for large-scale transport of plankton, such as Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana), which is an important component of the Southern Ocean food web. This overview provides a summary of recent observational and modelling results that consider the importance of advection to the Southern Ocean ecosystem and, in particular, the role of advection in structuring the large-scale distribution of Antarctic krill. The results of these studies show that advection is a dominant process controlling Antarctic krill distribution and by inference an important process affecting overall structure and production of the Southern Ocean food web. The overview shows that quantifying the roles of advective and retentive physical processes, and population dynamic and behavioural biological processes in determining the regional and local distribution of krill and abundance will be an important research focus. Strategies for future Antarctic multidisciplinary research programmes that are focused on understanding advective processes at a circumpolar scale are suggested.

An ecological study of the soil testate amoebae (Protozoa, Rhizopoda) communities on the sub-Antarctic island of Île de la Possession (Îles Crozet) revealed 65 taxa, belonging to 20 genera. Trinema lineare and Euglypha laevis were the most dominant species in all types of soils on the island. A Redundancy Analysis revealed three communities that characterize specific habitats: i. fellfield soils, characterized by low moisture values and low organic material content, contained fewer taxa and fewer individuals, ii. peaty valley soils, with lower pH values, showed high abundances and diversity, and iii. soils influenced by sea spray and marine animals had higher nutrient contents, elevated chloride and conductance values, resulting in more tests of Difflugiella oviformis, Nebela dentistoma and Edaphonobiotus campascoides. Special attention was given to the species composition in relation to the soil type and its moisture content. A comparison with aquatic habitats on Île de la Possession was made.

Organisms living in the Arctic and Antarctic are exposed to strong environmental constraints, especially temperature. Consequently, haemoglobin evolution has included adaptations with implications at the biochemical, physiological and molecular levels. The northern and southern polar oceans have very different oceanographic characteristics. Within the study of the molecular bases of cold adaptation in fish inhabiting polar habitats, and taking advantage of the information available on haemoglobin structure and function, we analysed the evolutionary history of the α and β globins of Antarctic and Arctic haemoglobins, under the assumption of the molecular-clock hypothesis, as a basis for reconstructing the phylogenetic relationships between species. Temperate fish, including two non-Antarctic notothenioids of special evolutionary interest, were also considered. Phylogenetic analysis was performed on the multiple sequence alignments constructed with the programme Clustal X. Tree topologies indicate that the chains of Antarctic major and minor haemoglobins cluster in two well separated groups and diverged prior to cold adaptation, forming a monophyletic group. In Arctic haemoglobins, the structure/function relationship reveals important differences in comparison with Antarctic ones, indicating a distinct evolutionary pathway. The Arctic ichthyofauna (unlike the Antarctic, dominated by one taxonomically uniform group) is characterized by high diversity, reflected in the phylogeny of a given trait. The constant physico-chemical conditions of the Antarctic waters are matched by a clear grouping of fish globin sequences, whereas the variability typical of the Arctic Ocean corresponds to high sequence variation, reflected in the trees by scattered intermediate positions between the Antarctic and non-Antarctic clades. The evolutionary history of the Root effect, an important physiological feature of fish haemoglobin, was investigated. Analysis of the fate of the residues of the β chains suggested to be correlated with the Root effect indicate that they should rather be regarded as ancestral characters, inherited by some species but not by others.
