This collection (curated by Thomas Clements, Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University) highlights the long history of research carried out by the British School at Athens in Sparta and Laconia and subsequently published in Annual of the British School at Athens (ABSA). Beginning with British fieldwork in the region in 1904, the articles selected below contain a mixture original fieldwork, archaeological interpretation, studies of ancient inscriptions, and historical analyses, spanning the earliest phases of the Classical polis of Sparta right up until the medieval, Byzantine settlement which later occupied the Acropolis Hill. As a result of the British connection to Laconia, ABSA has long been a preferred repository of research on Sparta and Laconia. Learn more about how this research fits into the history of archaeology at Sparta in the accompanying blog.
