Detailed data on autumn, winter and spring snow-cover conditions from remote areas are often difficult or very expensive to obtain. Therefore, an inexpensive method of digital photography was tested in high-Arctic Greenland. Automatic digital photography has provided daily data on snow distribution and snow depth for > 1 year from the Zackenberg area (74°30’ N) in northeast Greenland. A standard digital hand-held camera (Kodak Digital Science DC50) was equipped to become automatic; it is supplied with an “automatic finger” and an external power supply and built into a protecting box with additional solar panels on top, in order to secure continuous operation throughout the year. The daily photograph covers a 100 m transect through a seasonal snowpatch, and thus on an annual basis also yields information on snow-cover duration in the different vegetation zones of the snowpatch. The camera was installed in mid-August 1998. Photographs from the period mid-August 1998 to early September 1999 were collected and analyzed. All photos are taken at astronomic noon in order to use the daylight as long as possible into the winter season before the 24 h winter darkness begins in mid-November.

The digital photographs yielded the following information for the year 1998/99: The first winter snowfall occurred on 18 October; small-scale snow redistribution by snow-drifting started when the winter snow cover was about 5 cm thick. The continuous winter snow cover lasted for a minimum of 170 days in the most snow-deprived areas downwind of the snowpatch, whereas snow in the centre of the snowpatch stayed on the ground for > 325 days, turning the snowpatch perennial in summer 1999.

Meteorological data obtained close to the photographed snowpatch site, in combination with the snow-cover depth and distribution data derived from the photographs, show that at wind speeds (at 2 m height) of up to around 6 m s−1, only small-scale snow-drifting took place, when the snow cover was thin. Intense snowdrifting, however, took place at wind speeds of 8–13 m s−1, particularly when enough snow was available in the upwind area. The automatic continuous photography technique demonstrated here could be particularly useful in remote areas at high risk of avalanches during winter. It is an alternative to traditional snow monitoring achieved mainly by sonic sensors, snow pillows or manual measurements of snow depths Likewise, it can provide better areal information than most standard methods, which give only point measurements.

The introduction of low-temperature fluid into boreholes drilled in ice sheets helps to remove drilling cuttings and to prevent borehole closure through visco-plastic deformation. Only special fluids, or mixtures of fluids, can satisfy the very strict criteria for deep drilling in cold ice. The effects of drilling fluid on the natural environment are analyzed from the following points of view: (1) occupational safety and health; (2) ozone depletion and global warming; (3) chemical pollution; and (4) biological pollution. Traditional low-temperature drilling fluids (kerosene-based fluids with density additives, ethanol and n-butyl acetate) cannot be qualified as intelligent choices from the safety, environmental and technological standpoints. This paper introduces a new type of low-temperature drilling fluid composed of synthetic ESTISOLTM esters, which are non-hazardous substances. ESTISOLTM 140 mixtures with ESTISOLTM 165 or ESTISOLTM F2887 have an acceptable density and viscosity at low temperature. To avoid the potential for biological contamination of the subglacial environment, the borehole drilling fluid should be treated carefully on the surface.

Spatial representativeness and an understanding of controls on chemical species distribution are essential requirements of any significant ice core investigation. Snowpit studies provide an essential tool in this process. In preparation for the central Greenland deep drilling effort a series of snowpits was sampled in detail for oxygen isotopes, major anions, major cations, total acidity and radionuclides. The results of this sampling program are used to define: (1) the chemical composition of the snow in the region, (2) the input timing and spatial distribution of major chemical species, (3) the potential dependence of species concentration on accumulation rate, and (4) the signal characteristics identifiable in the region over the last few years.

The high accumulation rate, nearly complete preservation and detailed chronology of the Eclipse ice core, Yukon Territory, Canada, are well suited for comparison of the glaciochemical recordwith instrumental time series of temperature, precipitation and sea-level pressure. Results of cross-correlation analysis of instrumental temperature records with the Eclipse δ18O time series reveal a significant positive relationship between summertime δ18O at Eclipse and summer (April–September) temperatures in northwestern North America. the results indicate that the Eclipse δ18O time series provides a better proxy for regional temperature than does the δ18O time series from the Mount Logan ice-core record for which only negative correlations were found. Winter accumulation at Eclipse is significantly correlated with several sites in Alaska, but not with any sites in the Yukon. the δ18O, accumulation and glaciochemical time series also display significant correlations with the Northern Hemisphere sea-level pressure dataset, especially between wintertime sulfate and nitrate concentrations at Eclipse and the intensity of the wintertime Siberian high and Aleutian and Icelandic lows. These results suggest that year-to-year variability in the deposition of pollutants at Eclipse can be linked to changes in atmospheric circulation, while long-term trends can be explained by changes in source strength.

Over a two-year period, continuous measurements of temporal changes in tilt, conducted with a string of tilt meters in a borehole on Unteraargletscher, Bernese Alps, Switzerland, have been used to estimate the basal-motion component. This estimation is based on a comparison of the measurements with synthetic tilt curves, computed using a parameterization of a simplified flow field. The best agreement is found for a ratio of basal motion to forward motion due to ice deformation (slip ratio) equal to about 1.2. Measured tilt curves exhibit a number of different transient features. While an overall increase in tilt angle is observed at every tilt-meter location, two of the sensors recorded anomalous tilt behaviour. These anomalies are characterized by sudden and drastic variations in tilt. A particularly intriguing example of such short-term tilt variations was recorded with a tilt meter positioned 40 m above the bed during the 1997 summer melt season.

Snow and ice thickness in the coastal Kara Sea, Russian Arctic, were investigated by applying the thermodynamic sea-ice model HIGHTSI. The external forcing was based on two numerical weather prediction (NWP) models: the High Resolution Limited Area Model (HIRLAM) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model. A number of model experiments were carried out applying different snow parameterization schemes. The modelled ice thickness was compared with in situ measurements and the modelled snow thickness was compared with the NASA Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) snow thickness. The HIRLAM and ECMWF model results agreed with each other on air temperature and wind. The NWP model precipitation forecasts caught up the synoptic-scale snowfall events, but the magnitude was liable to errors. The ice growth was modelled reasonably well applying HIGHTSI either with a simple parameterization for snow thickness or with the HIRLAM or ECMWF model precipitation as input. For the latter, however, an adjustment of snow accumulation in early winter was necessary to avoid excessive accumulation and consequent underestimation of ice thickness. Applying effective snow heat conductivity improved the modelled ice thickness. The HIGHTSI-modelled snow thickness had a seasonal evolution similar to that of the AMSR-E snow thickness. New field data are urgently needed to validate NWP and ice models and remote-sensing products for snow and sea ice in the Kara Sea.

Algorithms to retrieve the snow grain-size and the concentration of snow impurities were developed using a theoretical bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model of the snow surface. In this model, snow grains are assumed to be independent spherical ice particles, and the BRDF is calculated with multiple scattering by snow particles. Using these algorithms, the snow grain-size and snow impurities were retrieved from Airborne Multispectral Scanner (AMSS) images at the visible (λ = 0.545 μm) and near-infrared (λ =1.24,1.64 and 2.23 μm) wavelengths observed over the flat snowfield in eastern Hokkaido, Japan, in February 1998. The estimated snow grain-size and impurities were consistent with the results of in situ measurements on the snow surface. For snow grain-size, measured reflectances in the different near-infrared AMSS channels indicated grain-size differences in the vertical profile of the snowpack.

A finite-difference model for the calculation of radar layer geometries in large ice masses is presented. Balance velocities are used as coefficients in the age equation and in the heat equation. Solution of the heat equation allows prediction of sliding areas and computation of basal melt rates. Vertical distributions of velocity are parameterized using shape functions. These can be set uniformly, or allowed to vary in space according to the distribution of sliding. The vertical coordinate can either be uniformly distributed within the thickness of the ice, or be uniformly distributed within the flux. The finite-difference scheme results in a large set of linear equations. These are solved using a nested factorization preconditioned conjugate gradient scheme. The convergence properties of some other iteration solution schemes are studied. The output is computations of age and temperature assuming steady state, in large ice masses at high resolution. Age calculations are used to generate isochrones which show the best fit to observed layers. Comparisons with analytical solutions are made, and the influence of the order of the finite-difference approximation and the choice of vertical coordinate on solution accuracy is considered.

The variability of Arctic pack-ice parameters (e.g. extent and ice type) has been monitored by satellite-borne sensors since the early 1960s, and information on ice thickness is now becoming available from satellite altimeters. However, the spatial resolution of satellite-derived ice properties is too coarse to validate fine-scale ice variability generated by regional-scale interaction processes that affect the coarse-scale pack-ice albedo, strength and decay. To understand these regional processes, researchers rely on other data-monitoring platforms such as moored upward-looking sonars and helicopter-borne sensors. Backed by observations, two such regional-scale pack-ice decay processes are discussed: the break-up of large pack-ice floes by long-period waves generated by distant storms, and the spring decay of first-year-ice ridges in a diverging pack-ice environment. These two processes, although occurring on regional spatial scales, are important contributors to the evolution of the total pack ice and need to be included in global climate models, especially as the conditions for their occurrence will alter due to climate change.

This paper examines the water budget and surface energy balance of a Svalbard glacier (midre Lovénbreen) over a 6 year period (1997–2002). Fresh-water yields are found to lie between 1.1 and 1.5 m a–1 and reflect variable amounts of glacier ice ablation (0.27 ± 0.15 ma–1) and more consistent amounts of snowmelt and summer precipitation (0.40± 0.10 and 0.49 ± 0.12 m respectively). Between 24% and 36% of the annual runoff is thought to pass through a subglacial drainage system. Although the site is heavily influenced by stable maritime air masses during the summer, surface melting is achieved largely by net shortwave radiation fluxes (74–100% of ablation). Water budget analysis shows that the annual runoff yields may be strongly influenced by water storage within the glacial system. Storage can occur over the winter period and force the early development of the subglacial drainage system during the following summer. Thus annual water fluxes from this glacier cannot be estimated from glacial mass-balance data alone and there is a need to assess the implications of overwinter storage for our understanding of glacial dynamics, annual fluvial process rates and mixing processes in Svalbard’s fjords.

Ice cauldrons are depressions which form at the surface of ice sheets when an underlying subglacial lake empties, in particular when subglacial volcanic eruptions occur. Notable examples of such cauldrons occur on the surface of the Vatnajökull ice cap in Iceland. More generally, cauldrons will form when a subglacial lake empties during a jökulhlaup. The rate of subsidence of the ice surface is related to the rate at which the subglacial water empties from the lake. We use a viscous version of classical beam theory applied to the ice sheet to determine the relation between the subsidence rate and flood discharge. We use the results to make inferences concerning ring fracture spacings in cauldrons, the consequent effect on flood discharge dynamics and the likely nature of subsidence events in the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Pronounced changes in glacier mass and length were observed for the monitored glaciers in the Jostedalsbreen region, Norway, since the last glacier inventories were compiled in the 1960s and 1980s. However, the current overall extent of the glaciers in the region is not well known. To obtain this information, we have compiled a new inventory from two mosaicked Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes acquired in 2006 that have excellent snow conditions for glacier mapping, the first suitable scenes for this purpose after 22 years of imaging with TM. Drainage divides and topographic inventory parameters were derived from a 25 m national digital elevation model for 1450 glaciers. By digitizing glacier outlines from 1 : 50 000 scale topographic maps of 1966, we calculated changes in glacier area for ~300 glaciers. Cumulative length changes for the 1997–2006 period were derived from an additional TM scene and compared with field measurements for nine glaciers. Overall, we find a 9% area loss since 1966, with a clear dependence on glacier size; however, seasonal snow in 1966 in some regions made area determination challenging. The satellite-derived length changes confirmed the observed high spatial variability and were in good agreement with field data (±1 pixel), apart from glacier tongues in cast shadow. The new inventory will be freely available from the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) glacier database.

Antarctica Bedmap2 datasets are used to calculate subglacial hydraulic potential and the area, depth and volume of hydraulic potential sinks. There are over 32 000 contiguous sinks, which can be thought of as predicted lakes. Patterns of subglacial melt are modelled with a balanced ice flux flow model, and water fluxes are cumulated along predicted flow pathways to quantify steady-state fluxes from the main basin outlets and from known subglacial lakes. The total flux from the continent is ~21 km3 a−1. Byrd Glacier has the greatest basin flux of ~2.7 km3 a−1. Fluxes from subglacial lakes range from ~1 × 10−4 to ~1.5 km3 a−1. Lake turnover times are calculated from their volumes and fluxes, and have median values of ~100 a for known ‘active’ lakes and ~500 a for other lakes. Recurrence intervals of a 0.25 km3 flood range from ~2 months to ~2000 a (median ≈130 a) for known ‘active’ lakes and from ~2 to ~2400 a (median ≈ 360 a) for other lakes. Thus, several lakes that have recently been observed to fill and drain may not do so again for many centuries; and several lakes that have not, so far, been observed to fill and drain have the potential to do so, even at annual to decadal timescales.

We present the results of several radio-echo sounding surveys carried out on Johnsons and Hurd Glaciers, Livingston Island, Antarctica, between the 1999/2000 and 2004/05 austral summer campaigns, which included both radar profiling and common-midpoint measurements with low (20– 25 MHz)- and high (200 MHz)-frequency radars. The latter have allowed us to estimate the radio-wave velocity in ice and firn and the corresponding water contents in temperate ice, which vary between 0 and 1.6% depending on the zone. Maximum ice thickness is ~200 m, with a mean value of 93.6±2.5 m. Total ice volume is 0.968±0.026 km3, for an area of 10.34±0.03km2. The subglacial relief of Johnsons Glacier is quite smooth, while that of Hurd Glacier shows numerous overdeepenings and peaks. The radar records suggest that Hurd Glacier has a polythermal structure, contrary to the usual assumption that glaciers in Livingston Island are temperate. This is also supported by other dynamical and geomorphological evidence.

The chronology of post-Last Glaciol Maximum deglaciation in the northern Antarctic Peninsula region is discussed. It is concluded that, contrary to what was earlier believed, the deglaciation process here was largely out-of-phase with that in the Northern Hemisphere. Although, for global eustatic reasons, the marine-based glaciers may have retreated simultaneously with ice-melting in the Northern Hemisphere, the land-based glaciers retreated only slowly during the first halfoftlie Holocene, about 9000-5000 BP. This may have been due either to increased precipitation counterweighing ablation or to delayed warming. A distinct but rather brief Glaciol readvancc took place around 5000 BP, probably caused by a period of renewed cooling. It was followed by the Holocene climatic optimum, about 4000-3000 BP. This warm “hypsithermal” period thus came much later than its equivalent in the Northern Hemisphere, but it roughly coincided with the Milankovitchcan Holocene insolation maximum for these southern latitudes.

The ecological environment of the headwater area of the Yellow River, west China, is seriously deteriorating because of the harsh natural environment, weakened ecological systems and intensified human activities as well as regional climate changes. Forests and glaciers coexist in this area. Glaciers in the area have retreated over the last decade because of climate change. Most glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) tend to retreat during warm intervals and advance during cold intervals. Tree-ring records provide an important index for examining past climate changes. A total of 139 core samples from 97 living cypresses (Juniperus przewalskii) in the central region of the Yellow River headwater area, the Animaqin mountains, northeastern TP, were sampled from three sites that are close to each other. The chronologies were developed using the ARSTAN program. Analyses indicate that these tree-ring width records reflect the summer maximum temperature of the study area over the past 700 years. The tree-ring records and the glacier advances recorded by terminal moraines are compared. Inferred summer maximum temperatures suggest three cold periods during the Little Ice Age, around AD1500, 1700 and 1850. These cold intervals are consistent with the glacier moraine record from the region.

Major volcanic eruptions deposit large amounts of strong acids in polar ice. Two such volcanic eruptions are Laki, A.D. 1783, at high latitude (64 °N), and Tambora, A.D. 1815, close to the Equator (8°S). The acid ice layers from these eruptions are easily reached by shallow drilling, and the acidity of the ice cores obtained has been determined by a solid electrical conductivity method (ECM), and in some cases by liquid pH measurements. The strong acid is identified by chemical anion analysis. Sulfate is the dominant anion in both of these volcanic events.

Atmospheric thermonuclear-bomb tests ejected radioactive debris into the atmosphere. Two major groups of such tests are those carried out by the Americans in 1952-54 at low latitude (11°N) and by the Russians in 1961-62 at high latitude (75°N). Radioactive debris from these events was deposited in polar snow, and can be detected by specific total β activity measurements. The radioactive layers serve as dating horizons in the firn. The total β activities were measured at least 10 years after ejection, thus the measured activities were mainly due to 90Sr and 137Cs.

The amount of 90Sr and 137Cs ejected into the atmosphere is known. We assumed a similar global distribution pattern of bomb-produced total β activity and strong acids from violent volcanic activity, and were able to calculate that both major volcanic events produced some 300 million tons of sulphuric acid. This is in agreement with other estimates of the Tambora eruption, which are based on studies of ice cores from Antarctica.

The 2006/07 and 2007/08 US-ITASE traverses from Taylor Dome to South Pole in East Antarctica provided opportunities to survey the subglacial and englacial environments using 3 MHz and 200MHz radar. We present first results of these new ground-based radar data. A prominent basal deformation layer indicates different ice-flow regimes for the northern and southern halves of the Byrd Glacier drainage. Buried dune stratigraphy that appears to be related to the megadunes towards the west occurs at depths of up to 1500 m. At least two new water-filled subglacial lakes were discovered, while two recently drained lakes identified from repeat ICESat surface elevation surveys appear to be devoid of water.

A 480 year record of the oxygen-isotope ratios, dust content, chemical species and net accumulation from ice cores drilled in 1989 90 on Dyer Plateau in the Antarctic Peninsula is presented. The continuous analyses of small (sub-annual) samples reveal well-preserved annual variations in both sulfate content and δ18O, thus allowing an excellent time-scale to be established.

This history reveals a recent pronounced warming in which the last two decades have been among the warmest in the last five centuries. Furthermore, unlike in East Antarctica, on Dyer Plateau conditions appear to have been fairly normal from AD 1500 to 1850 with cooler conditions from 1850 to 1930 and a warming trend dominating since 1930. Reconstructed annual layer thicknesses suggest an increase in net accumulation beginning early in the 19th century and continuing to the present. This intuitive conflict between increasing net accumulation and depleted δ18O (cooler climate) in the 19th century appears widespread in the peninsula region and challenges our understanding of the physical relationships among moisture sources, air temperatures and snow accumulation. The complex meteorological regime in the Antarctic Peninsula region complicates meaningful interpretation of proxy indicators and results in a strong imprint of local high-frequency processes upon the larger-scale climate picture.

Horizontal and vertical distributions of melt features (ice layers) were examined using two ice cores (206.6 and 101.5 m deep, 1 m apart) from Site J (66°51.9′ N, 46°15.9′W, 2030 m a.s.l.). The temperature at 10 m was −16.3°C. We observed 2804 melt features, with a total thickness of 30.32 m, in the 206.6 m core, corresponding to 16.4% by volume of the ice-equivalent core length. Horizontal distribution of melt features was examined by correlating melt-feature thicknesses in the two cores. The correlation coefficient was 0.71 (n = 514) for each melt feature in the two cores. It was maximum for data passed through 5 and 40 year low-pass filters. A significant relationship (P = 0.005, n = 36) was obtained for the vertical distribution of melt features and the June temperature on the west coast of Greenland (Jakobshavn). Using this, June temperatures at Jakobshavn since 1550 were estimated. There are three periods (1685-1705, 1835-70 and 1933-45) during which mean June temperatures clearly decreased, when they were estimated to he 0.1°, 0.4° and 0.2°C lower than the average for the whole period (1550-1989). The first two “cold” periods have been identified in melt features of the Dye 3 and Devon Island ice cores and in a tree-ring profile from Yukon Territory, Canada. Melt-feature percentages in the Site J ice core have increased since about 1945, probably reflecting summer-temperature warming on the ice sheet.
