About 1500 surface-ice samples for δ18O analysis were collected in the 1988 field season along a 750 m profile perpendicular to the margin of the Greenland ice sheet at Pakitsoq, ca 40 km north-east of Jakobshavn, central West Greenland. The purpose of the study was to evaluate how well the continuity of the layer sequence is preserved in ice-margin records, a question of crucial importance for evaluating the potential yield of using ice margins as “mining areas” for easily accessible old ice for climate and environmental studies.

More than half of the 1500 samples were taken continuously as 20 cm samples along a 170 m section through the Wisconsinan-Holocene transition which, previously, had been located at the surface of the ice margin. Along this transition section δ18O values decrease by about 6‰ from −31.5 to 37.5‰ on an average. Detailed studies were made of surface elevations and surface structures (e.g. blue bands) along the “horizontal core” profile which, moreover, was photographed section by section, thus enabling the δ-record to be correlated with surface features.

Results of the δ18O analyses are promising. Even though ice from the blue bands has δ-values that are 7–8‰ higher than those of the surrounding white ice, there seems to be no discontinuity in the white-ice δ-record across the blue bands.

This paper demonstrates the utility of European Remote-sensing Satellite (ERS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry for monitoring the transient snow-line (TSL) on Hardangerjøkulen ice cap, southern Norway, during the 1995/96 winter. The study shows how coherence information (an interferometry product) over the ice cap can be used to locate the TSL after the summer melt season. Spatial variations in coherence over the ice cap between successive ERS tandem-phase passes from summer to winter are related to surface and volume snow stability and surface ice stability. Temporal differences of coherence images between winter and summer are investigated using histogram analysis. A histogram threshold is found for the 1995/96 winter that can be used to identify the location of the TSL and then estimate the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA). The result shows good agreement (0.5%) with the field-estimated ELA from the Norwegian Water and Energy Administration. Themethod appears to be straightforward for this ice cap and it is envisaged that it could be a useful complementary method on other ice caps where repeat-pass SAR data are available.

A prognostic ice-ocean model of the Arctic, Greenland and Norwegian seas with daily wind and atmospheric forcing is integrated for 30 years to quasi-equilibrium. Three simulations are carried out to investigate the role played by ice deformation and transport in baroclinic adjustment of the Arctic Ocean: a standard run with precipitation and ice transport, a simulation without precipitation and a “thermodynamics only” simulation without ice transport but including precipitation. A diagnostic model is integrated for five years to serve as a comparative control run. Comparison of the vertically integrated stream-function of each of the model runs indicates that the vertical density stratification needed to maintain the circulation of the Arctic Ocean is reduced excessively when precipitation is neglected and artificially enhanced if ice transport out of the basin is ignored. This effect is even more noticeable in the surface currents and is also apparent in a comparison of simulated and observed drifting-buoy tracks. An analysis of the salt budget of the Arctic Ocean indicates that the three main components, salt transport by the ocean, salt flux from the annual cycle of ice, and a fresh-water flux from precipitation and river runoff are approximately of the same magnitude. The main circulation deficiency identified in the simulations is an inadequate flow of Atlantic water into the Arctic Basin through the Fram Strait.

Four ice cores from the Ross Sea drainage, Antarctica, show patterns of δ18O variations on a time scale of decades to centuries over the last 1400 years without change in the long-term average δ18O. Century scale δ18O fluctuations in the two cores drilled in the Ross Ice Shelf at Station J-9 (82°23′S, 168°38′W, elevation 60 m) are highly correlated (P < 2 × 10−4). The long isotope record (>30 000 a) of the 1978 J-9 core thus represents local conditions over at least 102 m and on time scales of 100 years and longer.

Regional correlations between the J-9 δ18O records and those from Ridge BC (82°54′S, 136°40′W, elevation 509 m) and the Dominion Range (85°15′S, 166°10′E, elevation 2700 m) are barely significant (P ≈ 0.05 for J-9 '76 and Dominion Range, 580 to 1400 years ago) or absent. The failure to find clear regional isotope trends related to climate fluctuations may reflect the finding that between 1957 and 1982 the area was in the transition zone between areas with opposite temperature trends, and showed little or no temperature change. The fact that the records nevertheless show significant δ18O fluctuations highlights the need to base regional climate reconstructions on a regional suite of ice-core records.

Under the Office of Naval Research-sponsored Arctic Leads Accelerated Research Initiative (ARI), a data set of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery covering the years 1988 through 1992 is being constructed. Relatively cloud-free imagery is selected from image hardcopies. Each image examined is subjectively ranked on the percentage of each sea or seas it covers, and the cloudiness of the image within each sea. The images are then logged in a spreadsheet. From the spreadsheet, about 20 images per month (for the year 1989) are ordered from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for processing. The image data are calibrated and mapped to one of two grids, which together cover most of the Arctic at 1 km per pixel. Care has been taken to match the grid and the projection to that of Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data distributed by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). The 1989 data set is complete at this time. Presently, data are distributed to the Remote Sensing Working Group of the ARI. NSIDC will distribute the data set to a wider audience at a later date.

Until recently, the influence of basal liquid water on the evolution of buried glaciers in Mars' mid latitudes was assumed to be negligible because the latter stages of Mars' Amazonian period (3 Ga to present) have long been thought to have been similarly cold and dry to today. Recent identifications of several landforms interpreted as eskers associated with these young (100s Ma) glaciers calls this assumption into doubt. They indicate basal melting (at least locally and transiently) of their parent glaciers. Although rare, they demonstrate a more complex mid-to-late Amazonian environment than was previously understood. Here, we discuss several open questions posed by the existence of glacier-linked eskers on Mars, including on their global-scale abundance and distribution, the drivers and dynamics of melting and drainage, and the fate of meltwater upon reaching the ice margin. Such questions provide rich opportunities for collaboration between the Mars and Earth cryosphere research communities.

At the summit of Law Dome (66°44′S, 112°50′E) the annual snow accumulation is equivalent to 0.7 m of water, and seasonal cycles of oxygen-isotope ratio are preserved clearly in the firn. Isotope-ratio measurements on three 28 m deep ice cores taken 15 m apart near the summit show that although annual layer thicknesses are well correlated between the cores, the actual isotope values (even when averaged over several years’ accumulation) are poorly correlated.

Since the three sites must obviously receive the same precipitation, the differences in isotope ratio imply that the amounts of the precipitation retained as accumulation from individual snow-falls throughout the year must vary. The large seasonal variation in isotope ratio then easily accounts for the offsets.

In the Law Dome region, precipitation occurs mainly as a result of cyclonic activity in spring, winter and autumn. The stronger winds experienced at these times cause the snow to be formed into large dunes, which are the stable (although moving) surface configuration under these conditions. The movement of dunes by erosion on one face and deposition on the other causes the snow in them to be well mixed. Isotope measurements on a 0.7 m high dune on the inland ice cap showed that it was composed of “winter” snow, with an average isotope value of −28.2% and a range of only 1%. The harder underlying snow had values which varied between −24.2 and −27.4%.

During periods of relatively calm or warm conditions the dunes become consolidated and their movement is greatly reduced. Further snow-falls then do not add accumulation to the top and up-wind side of the dunes but tend to fill them in on the down-wind side. In particular it is observed that for Law Dome the surface profile is quite rough in winter and spring, but the more gentle winds and light snow-falls experienced in summer produce a very smooth surface at the beginning of autumn, with all the surface hollows filled in.

The ice-core isotope profiles confirm the evenness of the summer accumulation, compared to that of winter. Correlation coefficients are typically 0.26 for the winter minima and 0.65 for the summer peak in isotope ratio. This means that somewhat shorter averaging times can be used when compiling “climatic” records from isotope profiles if only the “summer” isotope values are used. This is useful in comparison of isotopic and meteorological data when only a limited time span is available.

Apart from the short-term effects, which can be reduced as desired by longer averaging periods, these core studies also demonstrate how any process which can modulate the precipitation or accumulation will also affect the isotopic composition of the accumulated snow.

An investigation was undertaken of the creep of columnar-grained ice under constant compressive stresses of 98 and 59 kPa in order to extend the observed relationship between strain-rate and stress further into the low-stress region. Stress was applied perpendicular to the long direction of the grains. Observations were made for temperatures between -5 and -40°C. The steady-state creep rate for secondary creep was not yet attained for strain of 1.4% and stress of 98 kPa. An initial yield was observed at that stress in the strain range of 0.2 to 0.3%, similar to that seen at higher stress. The observations showed that the strain-rate tended to a linear dependence on stress below 49 kPa and that more than one dislocation process with different values for the stress exponent may contribute to the strain at higher stresses. An activation energy of 63 kJ mol−1 was consistent with the observed temperature dependence of the strain-rate. Straining ice to a given strain under a stress of about 0.3 MPa and then reducing the load may be a convenient way to study the stress, strain and temperature dependence of the strain-rate at low stress.

Detailed seismic short-refraction profiling was conducted on Ice Stream Β (UpB) during the 1983–84 austral summer. A new high-resolution data logger, developed at the University of Wisconsin, recorded both compressional- and shear-wave arrivals. We report here on P-wave and S-wave profiles recorded along a line parallel to the axis of the ice stream. Source-receiver separations up to 720 m yielded seismic velocity-depth curves to below the firn-ice transition zone (slightly greater than 30 m at UpB).

For the compressional-wave profile, geophones were separated by 2.5 m, which yielded a velocity-depth curve with a granularity of ∼1 m. The corresponding density-depth curve agrees well with direct density measurements obtained from a core extracted nearby (Alley and Bentley 1988, this volume). Discontinuities in the velocity gradient do not appear at the “critical densities” as they did at Byrd Station, Antarctica, and elsewhere (Kohnen and Bentley 1973, Robertson and Bentley 1975).

Two shear-wave profiles were recorded, both with geophone spacings of 5 m, one with longitudinal polarization (SV) and the other with transverse polarization (SH). There is a marked difference in velocity between the SH and SV waves, particularly in the shallow firn. We suggest that a strong vertical shape-and-bonding fabric in the shallow firn, as observed in cores collected at UpB, would account for this disparity.

The characteristics of ice in the Okhotsk coastal polynyas are examined. A map of AMSR-E thin-ice thickness in the northwest shelf region shows that most of the coastal polynya area is covered by thin ice with a thickness of 0.1 m. the thickness increases sharply at the edge of the polynya. From comparisons with QuikSCAT backscatter, the thin-ice area corresponds well with the low-backscatter area during almost all the coastal polynya period. A comparison with ice thickness measured by an ice-profiling sonar in the coastal polynya region of northeastern Sakhalin shows a similar relationship, with the backscatter tending to be low when the ice is thin. the averaged backscatter of thin (≤0.1 m) ice is –19.6±2.8 dB (horizontal polarization). the backscatter of thin ice is considered to be mainly determined by the surface roughness because volume scattering of thin ice is low due to the dielectric properties associated with the high salinity. the results of this study suggest that the coastal polynya is covered with grease ice/nilas whose surface is almost mirror smooth. This is confirmed by a comparison with photographs taken at the coastal polynya region near Magadan, Russia. At the outer edge of the coastal polynya, a region of relatively high backscatter (>–16 dB) exists, probably because it has a rougher ice surface than the polynya area. This suggests that ice motion in this area may be convergent.

Walking tracks which cross relatively rugged avalanche-prone terrain are becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand. Consequently, there exists the need to develop a methodology by which it will be possible objectively to assess the avalanche hazard in the vicinity of the tracks. This paper outlines some procedures that have been used to map avalanche paths, and introduces modifications to an internationally used highway hazard index employed to quantify the danger to walkers. The Fiordland region of south-west New Zealand is an area of spectacular scenic beauty, made famous by the Milford Track which has been walked by large numbers of tourists since the late nineteenth century. In recent years, avalanches have killed one person on the track, severely damaged a lodge, and destroyed several small bridges. Other walking tracks have been opened to tourists in this century and one of these, the Routeburn Track, is included in this study. Avalanche paths which affected the Milford and Routeburn Tracks were mapped in the field using well-established techniques and applying the results of previous research on the Milford Road, where historical records are available for a period of 50 years. The risk to walkers was assessed with a hazard index which depends on frequency of avalanches, numbers of paths, time taken to traverse each path, and numbers of walkers using the track. Results indicate that the avalanche hazard is low to moderate on the Milford Track and moderate on the Routeburn Track. The management implications of these findings are outlined.

A high-resolution GCM ECHAM3 T106 was used to simulate the climates of the present and of the future under doubled CO2 The ECHAM3 T106 was integrated for an equivalent time of 5 years (1) with the observed SST of the 1980s and (2) with the SST for the 2 × CO2 climate generated from the ECHAM1 T21 coupled transient experiment. The main motivation for using the GCM to simulate the mass balance is the level of skill in simulating precipitation and accumulation recently achieved in the high-resolution GCM experiment. The ablation is computed, based on the GCM internal surface fluxes and the temperature/ablation relationship formulated on the Greenland field data. The two ice sheets show very different reactions towards doubling the CO2. As the decrease in accumulation and the increase in ablation in Greenland cause an annual mean specific mass balance of −225 mm (eq. −390 km3), the increase in accumulation and virtually non-melt conditions in Antarctica result in a mean annual specific mass balance of + 23 mm (eq. + 325 km3). The sum of the mass balance on both ice sheets is equivalent to the annual sea-level rise of 0.2 mm. This experiment shows that other mechanisms for sea-level change, such as the thermal expansion of the sea water and the melt of small mountain glaciers, will remain important in the coming century.

This article presents the main aspects of the design solutions (based on the application of sensors MEMS and cantilevers), testing and applying of the multi-functional borehole logger ANTTIC (Antarctic Thermo-barometer, Inclinometer, Caliper) for geophysical high-precision monitoring (when simultaneous registering of temperature, pressure, axis inclination angle and radii of borehole cross-sections at 12 points), which is designed specifically for ultra-low temperatures and ultra-high pressures, and to determine an elliptical borehole shape and registration anisotropy factor in deep ice boreholes in the central region of Eastern Antarctica, in the areas of dome A at the Kunlun station (China) and/or of lake Vostok at the Vostok station (Russia).

Observations of ice drift received from an array of ARGOS buoys drifting in the Weddell Sea in winter 1986 are described. Wind and current data are also available, permitting derivation of the complete momentum budget including the internal ice stress computed as residuum. It is shown that the variability of forcing both of the atmosphere and of the ocean is large, and that internal ice stress is not negligible; monthly vector averages amount to about half of the wind and water stresses. Coefficients of shear and bulk viscosity are derived according to Hibler's model of ice rheology; they turn out to be negative occasionally, in particular when small-scale forcing of the atmosphere is large.

Extending the record of glacier area changes into the past improves our understanding of climate change impacts. Although analogue maps showing historic glacier extents are abundant, digital outlines from before the satellite era are sparse as the digitisation of moraines and trimlines on freely available satellite images is challenging. With the now available very high-resolution images provided by Web Map Services (WMS), new doors are open for the precise digitisation. Here, we used the ESRI WMS to digitise Little Ice Age (LIA) glacier extents and present area changes since the LIA in four selected regions along with a detailed uncertainty analysis. We used modern glacier outlines as a starting point and additionally consulted Sentinel-2 images, the ArcticDEM and historic maps for interpretation. Dating records from the literature allowed calculating area change rates. In total, 493 LIA glaciers (4640 km2, now 891 ice bodies with 3590 km2) were digitised, yielding relative area changes of −20% (−0.14% a−1), −15% (−0.10% a−1), −26% (−0.16% a−1) and −61% (−0.19% a−1) for Alaska, Baffin Island, Novaya Zemlya and the tropics, respectively. The ESRI WMS images are a great asset to precisely map moraines and trimlines, but information about the timing of the related extents requires further sources.

Experimental tests were carried out on model icebergs. Natural drift tests with a 1:100 scale model on Brienzer See, Switzerland, show the effects of various environmental conditions. Froude similitude formed the basis for these tests. Other experiments, carried out with a 1:60 model in St. Malo harbour, France, show the need for information obtained at this scale, and include assessments of the drag coefficients for various model shapes with or without insulation skirts on the model, the effects of added mass and rotation of the model, and steering possibilities.

Ultra-clean techniques have been used to collect a series of fresh surface-snow samples on Gipps Ice Rise, Larsen Ice Shelf (68°48′S, 60°54′W) between 21 December 1984 and 12 February 1985. Aerosol samples were collected simultaneously on to pre-cleaned membrane filters to allow the direct comparison of trace-element levels in air and snow. Samples have been analysed by various techniques for cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, aluminium, calcium, potassium and sodium. For all elements, cross-sample concentration profiles have been obtained to support the data for snow samples.

The heavy-metal concentrations found in the surface snow were similar to those measured previously near Gomez Nunatak in the Antarctic Peninsula. The mean aerosol concentrations found at Gipps Ice Rise were Cd: 0.06 pg m−3, Cu: 1.0 pg m−3, Pb; 4.7 pg m−3, Zn: 6.1 pg m−3. These are the lowest concentrations measured so far in Antarctic aerosol.

The ratio of the snow concentration (pg g−1) to air concentration (ng m−3), known as the washout factor, has been calculated for each element and sampling period. The data show that, for the Antarctic Peninsula, the marine aerosol is more efficiently removed to the snow-pack than is the crustal aerosol. Heavy metals are least efficiently removed. This result suggests that the measurement of concentrations in snow and ice alone may lead to misinterpretation of atmospheric source strengths.
