The genus Paracloeodes (Insecta : Ephemeroptera : Baetidae) is newly reported from South America. Because of the discovery of species with hindwings and other characteristics not previously associated with Paracloeodes, a redescription of the genus is provided. Cladistic data suggest a South American center of origin for this Panamerican genus. Paracloeodes binodulus,n. sp., is described from larvae from northern Brazil, and is distinguished by the lack of hindwingpads and presence of small mesonotal tubercles. Paracloeodes eurybranchus n. sp., is described from larvae and female adults from north-central Argentina and southeastern Brazil; it is distinguished as larvae by the relatively large size, hindwingpads, and medially broad gills. Paracloeodes ibicui, n. sp., is described from a mature larva collected from Paraguay, and is distinguished by hindwingpads andabdominal coloration. Paracloeodes leptobranchus, n. sp., is described from larvae from Paraguay and southeastern Brazil, and is distinguished by relatively large size, hindwingpads, and slender gills.

The stability of occurrence, abundance and dominance of fish was compared between two sampling periods, 1963-66 and 2002-04 in two lowland rivers from the Warta/Odra system (Poland): the Widawka and its tributary Grabia (95.8 and 77.3 km long, respectively). The Widawka system has been under strong influence of a brown coal strip mine since the 1970s. Long stretches of the upper Widawka and of its certain tributaries were changed into concrete canals, which receive daily 660 000 m3 of water disposed by the strip mine. The Grabia maintained its natural character. On the basis of the abundance of fish species, the Kohonen artificial neural network almost perfectly separated fish samples collected in 1963-66 from samples collected in 2002-04, which means that: 1) the differences in ichthyofauna between these two sampling periods were more drastic than spatial differences between the severely modified Widawka and the natural Grabia, and 2) in general, ichthyofauna at the most modified sites in 1963-66 was in better condition than at the least modified sites in 2002-04. In 1963-66, the species, roach, gudgeon, bleak and dace composed together 70% of the total fish number, while in 2002-04 the same joint dominance was gained by roach, perch and stone loach. The analysis of temporal changes in the Widawka and Grabia Rivers focused on the following 3 fish groups: (1) Non-psammophilous rheophils (NPR), which are most vulnerable to human-induced modifications, which is why their decline and/or extinction are typical for unbalanced lotic ecosystems. In this study, the total dominance of NPR decreased 5 times; (2) Psammophilous rheophils (stone loach and gudgeon), which often predominate in degraded smaller streams. In this study, the dominance of stone loach increased 3 times and was highest in the most affected stretches of the Widawka River, including those that had been canalised. Gudgeon was often dominant at moderately modified sites of the Widawka; (3) Roach and perch, whose high dominance is typical for disturbed larger rivers, which was supported also in this study by the fact that both species were most dominant in 2002-04. The dominance of roach increased almost twice and was highest in the lower courses of both rivers. A significant increase in abundance was recorded for perch, whose dominance was highest in the canalised section of the Widawka. The described changes were deep enough to influence the hardly sensitive CDI, Simpson and Shannon indices, which indicated a significant increase in dominance and a decrease in diversity of fish assemblages over the last 4 decades.

Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic (AAP) bacteria are widely distributed in marine and freshwater ecosystems. The aims of this study were to investigate the diversity and abundance of AAP bacteria in cyanobacterial bloom-forming eutrophic lakes and to study the association of AAP bacteria with the bloom-forming cyanobacteria. Analysis of pufM gene (the light-reaction center gene) clone libraries indicated that in eutrophic lakes (Lake Taihu and Lake Chaohu, China) with cyanobacterium Microcystis blooms, the AAP bacteria were related to members of Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria. In Lake Taihu and Lake Chaohu, Alphaproteobacteria accounted for 81.5% and 75.0% of Microcystis-associated AAP bacteria, respectively, and 84.6% and 72.5% of free-living AAP bacteria, respectively. The predominance of Alphaproteobacteria in the two lakes was different from the previously reported predominance of Betaproteobacteria in freshwater lakes. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis indicated that in Lake Taihu and Lake Chaohu, AAP bacteria represented an important part of the bacterial community associated with Microcystis, and the abundance of Microcystis-associated AAP bacteria (18.3% and 11.7%, respectively) was higher than that of free-living AAP bacteria (5.1% and 7.9%, respectively). The abundance of AAP bacteria in the two bloom-forming lakes was higher than the previously reported level in other eutrophic freshwater bodies.

Emergence traps were operated over three years in a stream near Lunz in southwestern Lower Austria, to find out the differences between eight types of traps. Trichoptera, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, Simuliidae, Limoniidae and Empididae were compared quantitatively as whole groups. Trichoptera, Limoniidae and aquatic Empididae were compared at species level. Except for the expected statistical variation, there was wide variation in the number of specimens between groups and species, and also between the trap types, to such a degree that the emergence method appears to be of limited value for productivity or other quantitativestudies. The total catch of insects caught in the traps, consisted of freshly emerged adults, aged ovipositing females and many other insects (including terrestrial ones) which entered the traps in unknown ways. The variation may depend on the biology and behaviour of the insects, on the design of the traps and on an unknown number of other factors.

La capacité reproductrice de D. tigrina est mesurée à différents niveaux de température. Elle est exprimée par le taux intrinsèque d'accroissement naturel. La reproduction, inhibée par le froid jusqu'à une température légèrement supérieure à 10°, commence dès que ce seuil est dépassé et cesse au-dessus de 25°. Le taux d'accroissement est supérieur à celui des espèces indigènes à partir de 20°.

A chaque température, les individus ont tendance à atteindre une taille d'équilibre. Une relation est mise en évidence entre cette dernière et l'intensité de la reproduction. Au-dessous de la taille d'équilibre les animaux présentent une phase de croissance, au-dessus la multiplication commence éventuellement. Ce phénomène est confirmé à des températures qui varient en suivant le cycle extérieur. Dans ce cas, la fragmentation est saisonnière et présente un maximum en juin.

Le comportement nutritionnel de Microcystis aeruginosa et de Synechocystis sp. en période de carence des nutriments a étéévalué par des expériences simultanées de carence et d'enrichissements en azote et en phosphore. Ces manipulations ont permisd'estimer les réserves intracellulaires en nutriments stockées par ces deux espèces de cyanobactéries et de voir dans quelle mesureces réserves soutiennent leur croissance au cours de la carence. L'évaluation de la capacité de stockage des nutriments a étéfaite en culture sur milieu naturel (eau du lac pour Microcystis et eau usée pour Synechocystis) et sur milieu enrichi BG 13.La croissance des deux souches d'algues est beaucoup plus rapidement affectée par la carence en azote (N-NO- 3). Le nombrede cellules filles, produites à partir des réserves intracellulaires en azote, est pratiquement similaire pour les deux types de milieuxde culture utilisés. A l'inverse, malgré la carence en phosphore, les deux cyanobactéries poursuivent leur croissance en phaseexponentielle beaucoup plus longtemps grâce aux réserves qui ne sont épuisées qu'au 8ème jour de mise en carence. Le nombrede cellules filles produites à partir des réserves intracellulaires en phosphore, est légèrement plus faible en culture sur milieu BG13 que sur milieu naturel. Les deux souches stockent des quantités en azote et en phosphore non négligeables qui leur permettentde maintenir leur croissance lorsque les nutriments font défaut dans le milieu.

The objectives of this study were to compare the sensitivity of three freshwater macroinvertebrate shredder species (Atyaephyra desmarestii, Echinogammarus meridionalis and Schizopelex festiva) to acute stress induced by eucalyptus leaf extracts and copper, independently and in mixtures, and the ability of temperature to influence the chemicals’ toxicity. Laboratory bioassays based on mortality with single substances and mixtures were carried out with the three species at 10 and 20°C. After 96 h of exposure, S. festiva, A. desmarestii and E. meridionalis were found to have differences of sensitivity to copper, eucalyptus leaf extracts and their mixtures, with S. festiva being the least sensitive species at both 10 and 20°C. The relative sensitivity of A. desmarestii and E. meridionalis to chemical exposure seems to be chemical and temperature dependent. Overall, these findings suggest that chemical stress may modulate the biodiversity of stream shredders communities due to differential sensitivity of individual species to environmental contaminants, and that temperature may influence the process. Thus, more knowledge on the combined effects of multi-stressors is needed, particularly on temperature and chemicals’ interactions and on the molecular mechanisms underlying the responses observed at individual level.

A new genus (Callibaetoides) and species (Callibaetoides caaigua) of Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) is described based on nymphs and adults of both genders collected in forested areas of Amazonia and Mata Atlântica biomes. The nymphs were collected from leaf packs accumulated in the backwaters of small streams. The genus and species can be easily distinguished from other members of the family in South America by the following combination of characteristics: male and female imagos with costal process of hind wing centrally located and strongly projected; marginal intercalary veins long and paired in male imago; nymphs with deep medial emargination of labrum, maxillary palp three segmented and third segment of labial palp quadrangular.

Resource availability influences the flow of energy through food webs, thus affecting biomass and trophic structure of consumer communities. To assess the effect of availability of allochthonous (leaf litter) and autochthonous (periphyton) resources on the trophic structure of macroinvertebrates, we sampled monthly for a year two sites (upstream forested, downstream open canopy) of Challhuaco, a low order mountain stream in the Patagonian Andes. Leaf litter and periphyton dynamics showed the expected pattern, peaking in autumn and spring, respectively. Temporal variations of shredders and scrapers were synchronized, with the logic delay, with resource abundance. Although leaf litter mass was similar at both stream reaches, shredders were more abundant at the forest site. Periphyton biomass was higher at the forest, while scrapers were more abundant at the open site. The patterns of resource and consumer abundance, and community functional structure were mostly explained by the interaction of abiotic factors and trophic relationships.

Invertebrate drift results from several factors, including accidental dislodgement from the substratum, interaction with other invertebrates and predators, and changes in water quality, discharge and current velocity. We evaluated the degree to which flow fluctuations from dam releases altered the daily and seasonal invertebrate drift patterns in a tropical river. We collected macroinvertebrates during fixed flow rates (323 m3.s−1 in the wet season and 111 m3.s−1 in the dry season) and when peak flows fluctuated (378–481 m3.s−1 in the wet season and 109–173 m3.s−1 in the dry season) in 2010. Of the 31 924 organisms collected, 8872 individuals and 43 taxa were collected in the wet season and 23 052 and 32 taxa were collected during the dry season. Seasonality had a strong influence on invertebrate assemblage composition and structure in the drift. During fixed flow periods, drift densities were greatest in the dry season and drift taxonomic richness was greatest in the wet season. In the wet season, fluctuating flows increased nocturnal drift density and richness, but decreased diurnal richness; in the dry season, fluctuating flows decreased drift densities and diurnal richness. In conclusion, the daily and seasonal invertebrate drift patterns are influenced by dam operations that alter flows and this knowledge can be used to reduce the downstream effects of dams.

Lithoglyphus naticoides was observed for the first time in the north of France at the beginning of the 19th century, but sincethen this gastropod has only succeeded in colonising the eastern half of this country. A map showing its distribution in Franceis proposed. In the Saône river, L. naticoides is an annual species: spawning occurs from March to June and the juveniles thatgenerally appear in May grow rapidly during the summer then spawn and disappear in the spring of the following year. Differentobservations suggest that increased water temperatures occurring in the context of global warming and potential/possible interspecificcompetition are the main reasons for the disappearance of L. naticoides in the Saône river at Lyon since November 2004.

La microdistribution des larves et nymphes de 3 espèces de simulies (Odagmia variegata, Odagmia obreptans et Simulium rupicolum) a été observée en divers cours d'eau pyrénéens.

Ces espèces se rencontrent en présence de vitesses importantes qui, dans les ruisseaux étudiés, étaient présentes dans les zones à écoulement torrentiel. Nous ne les avons pas rencontrées dans les zones à écoulement général de type fluvial. Les pierres lisses et d'un diamètre supérieur à 10 cm environ sont les substrats les mieux colonisés. Les faces amont faiblement inclinées présentent les plus fortes densités larvaires. Dans les zones à fort courant, en présence d'un gradient longitudinal même réduit des vitesses, les larves se concentrent dans une étroite bande où les vitesses sont maximales. Le corps des larves est couché vers l'aval et subit les pulsations du courant.

Les larves de simulies colonisent rapidement des canaux immergés dans un ruisseau (fig. 2) ; et par suite, les conditions hydrauliques locales peuvent être précisées aux endroits où se fixent les larves.

En une même station, le débit variant dans le temps, le type d'écoulement peut passer du fluvial au torrentiel (fig. 3 et 4).

Les profils des vitesses à la paroi, c'est-à-dire dans la zone où vivent les invertébrés, peuvent être déterminés en fonction de la rugosité apparente de la paroi (fig. 6).

Les conditions d'existence d'un film laminaire (sous couche laminaire) dépendent de la vitesse du courant et de la dimension des aspérités (fig. 7 et 8). Pour une vitesse de courant donnée, les relations entre l'épaisseur δ du film laminaire et la dimension ε des aspérités déterminent les possibilités d'existence du film laminaire (fig. 8).

La variation de l'épaisseur du film laminaire est représentée en fonction de la vitesse du courant dans un abaque (fig. 9) qui tient compte également des conditions imposées par la dimension des aspérités.

Le film laminaire n'a qu'une influence réduite sur les conditions de vie des larves de simulies; la turbulence joue un rôle important sur ces conditions de vie.

La Camargue est une zone unique en Europe Occidentale. L'influence de l'homme joue un grand rôle dans les modifications permanentes de son réseau hydrographique. Schématiquement, les milieux les plus doux se rencontrent en haute Camargue où les parties cultivées et irriguées dominent. Une deuxième zone d'étangs et de marais assure l'écoulement des eaux vers la mer et occupe la moyenne et la basse Camargue ; c'est le domaine mixohalin. Les Salins correspondent à une troisième zone dans le sud-est.

Les données températures-pluies sont traduites sous forme de climatogrammes. L'importance des vents, en particulier du mistral, est précisée.

Les analyses chimiques portent sur les éléments qui influencent directement la répartition et l'écologie des Mollusques : température, salinité, dureté totale - calcique et magnésienne -, oxygègne dissous.

Les salinités sont étudiées en fonction des variations des niveaux.

Une nouvelle méthode de prélèvement quantitatif est utilisée dans les eaux dulçaquicoles et saumâtres peu profondes.

Les termes de la classification des eaux saumâtres de P. AGUESSE et du Congrès de Venise sont repris et discutés.

Les milieux limniques, mixohalins et hyperhalins Camarguais sont décrits. On peut en dégager plusieurs caractéristiques essentielles : extrême variabilité des conditions physico-chimiques ; importantes variations horizontales des salinités liées à la faible profondeur des marais et à l'action des vents violents ; températures élevées en été. Dans les milieux les plus doux émerge une flore importante de Scirpus, Phragmites et Typha. Lorsque la salinité augmente, les surfaces d'eau libre dominent.

La dernière partie concerne l'inventaire des Mollusques aquatiques et leur répartition dans les différents milieux.

Parmi les 43 espèces mentionnées, la plupart sont caractéristiques des eaux douces ou faiblement oligosaumâtres. Les espèces d'eaux saumâtres sont réduites. Deux espèces marines : Cardium glaucum et Abra ovata sont capables de s'adapter aux milieux mixohalins et hyperhalins.

11 espèces appartiennent aux Gastéropodes prosobranches, 20 aux Pulmonés basommatophores, 12 aux Lamellibranches.

A noter l'importance qualitative des espèces limniques, localisées dans les eaux homoiohalines ou faiblement oligohalines. Cette abondance serait liée, depuis l'extension de la riziculture en Camargue, à une augmentation des biotopes d'eau douce.

Dans les eaux oligohalines et faiblement mésohalines cohabitent souvent des formes dulçaquicoles très résistantes et des formes mieux adaptées aux variations plus importantes des salinités (Potamopyrgus jenkinsi, Pseudamnicola anatina, Pseudamnicola compacta, Bithynia tentaculata, Physa acuta, Lymnaea palustris, L. peregra, Ancylus fluviatilis).

Dans le domaine des eaux méso, poly et hyperhalines des étangs de moyenne et basse Camargue l'instabilité des facteurs physico-chimiques s'accentue, la salinité varie considérablement. Les alternances d'inondations et d'assèchements, la faible profondeur des marais, déterminent un tri des espèces ; les Mollusques sténohalins sont éliminés au profit d'espèces eurythermes et euryhalines. On assiste à une réduction du nombre des espèces et à une pullulation des individus des espèces présentes. Ne persistent au maximum que 4 espèces : Cardium glaucum, Abra ovata, Hydrobia acuta, Hydrobia ventrosa.

Les lacs du massif de Néouvielle (Hautes-Pyrénées) hébergent une vingtaine d'espèces d'Oligochètes, en majorité ubiquistes ou holarctiques. Une espèce nouvelle est décrite, Peloscolex pyrenaicus, biogéographiquement et écologiquement proche de l'espèce Peloscolex velutinus, fréquente dans la zone profonde des lacs subalpins. Quantitativement, les Tubificidae accusent les plus fortes densités moyennes de peuplement, suivis dans l'ordre par les Naididae, les Enchytraeidae et les Lumbriculidae.

Les pourcentages de similitude entre les communautés en provenance des différentes stations et les indices d'association interspécifique ont été calculés. Les communautés d'Oligochètes sont échelonnées en fonction de deux gradients, l'altitude et la profondeur. Cette sériation, conditionnée par les facteurs climatiques et édaphiques, affecte la répartition qualitative et surtout quantitative des communautés benthiques.

In the eutrophic Lake Kasumigaura in Japan, a trend of dissolved Si (DSi) concentration was detected over the last three decades, probably caused by the DSi release enhanced by an increase in sediment resuspension for the same period (Arai et al., Limnol., 13, 81–95, 2012). The present study described the long-term trends of the magnitude and seasonality of diatom blooms in the lake during 1981–2010 using the database and assessed the influencing factors for the trends by the numerical simulation of DSi and diatoms. The box model was developed based on the lake budgets (inflow, outflow, release and sedimentation) and the simple diatom growth model depending on DSi, temperature and light condition. As results, database analysis detected a long-term trend of increasing diatom abundance and a shift of blooming season from spring and autumn to the winter–spring period. Si could be regarded as a main nutrient factor limiting diatom growth by analyzing N:P:Si ratios. Our model simulation relatively well-reproduced the increasing trend and the shift of seasonality of DSi and diatoms, even though peaks of diatom blooms were underestimated in some years. Among input variables, the concentration of resuspended sediments radically increased. The model simulation with the input variables or parameters changed suggested as follows: (1) the recent DSi release from resuspended sediments enhanced diatom abundance and (2) the degradation of light condition caused by resuspension affected the shift of blooming season. These findings implicate the significance of the interactions between sediments and water to phytoplankton blooms.

Les Wiedemannia accompagnent presque partout les eaux à cours rapide. Leur absence est toujours significative, soit de pollution, soit d'une très grande pauvreté de la faune dans son ensemble.

Sept zones - indiquées par des Wiedemannia de différentes espèces - peuvent être distinguées, de l'amont vers l'aval, dans un même cours d'eau. En homologuant les territoires d'une même zone dans des rivières différentes, la zonation fournie par les Wiedemannia tient compte des températures extrêmes au cours de l'année et de l'abondance des animaux.

Trois sous-espèces de W. beckeri et quatre espèces sont décrites.

At present, 99 species of cladocerans are known from Thailand, but up to ten more have not been identified to species,particularly in Chydorus, Ephemeroporus and Pleuroxus. Cosmopolitan species are a minority, while wide-rangingcircumtropical taxa are an important element, beside species that only occur in the tropics-subtropics of two continents. At leastthree species are suspected of a neotropical - southeast Asian disjunction, while three more are provisionally considered endemicof Thailand. Daphnia, as usual in the tropics, is rare and reduced to the single D. lumholtzi.

A field and laboratory investigation of the food and feeding behavior of larvae of the potamanthid mayfly Anthopotamusverticis (Say) was conducted from 1989 to 1991 on a population from the Tippecanoe River, Indiana (USA). Gutcontent analyses indicated that all size classes of larvae are detritivores, with over 95 % of food consisting of fine detritalparticles. Videomacroscopy indicated that all size classes of larvae are filter feeders, able to utilize both active depositfilter feeding and passive seston filter feeding cycles in their interstitial microhabitat. Deposit filter feeding initially incorporates the removal of loosely deposited detritus with the forelegs. Seston filter feeding initially incorporates filteringby long setae on the forelegs and palps. Mandibular tusks are used to help remove detritus from the foreleg setae. ASEM examination of filtering setae indicated they are hairlike and bipectinate, being equipped with lateral rows of setules.The results show that previous assumptions that potamanthid larvae were collector/gatherers are erroneous. Theresults are applicable to congeners, and all potamanthids, including Palearctic and Oriental elements, are hypothesizedto be filter feeders, differing only in some details of behavior.

Le lac de Sainte-Croix est une retenue hydroélectrique mise en eau depuis une dizaine d'années.C'est un lac oligotrophe, monomictique chaud où l'ablette a été introduite dès la création de la retenue. L'analyse descontenus stomacaux fait apparaître deux régimes différents suivants l'emplacement des captures : dans la partie centraleet aval du lac, l'ablette est essentiellement planctonophage, alors qu'elle absorbe des débris d'algues, des larves et desimagos d'insectes aquatiques dans la zone amont sous l'influence directe de la rivière Verdon.La faible densité du plancton pendant la majeure partie de l'année entraîne une croissance lente et une fécondité faible(6 000 ovules pour 160 mm) au centre et à l'aval du lac, alors que la croissance est rapide et la fécondité élevée (9 400ovules pour 160 mm) dans la zone amont enrichie par la dérive du Verdon. La maturité sexuelle est atteinte à 3 ans pour 90 % des individus des deux sexes, quel que soit le point de capture.

L'importance des communautés algales benthiques dans la productivité primaire d'un lac de haute montagne est évaluée. Les algues lithophytiques de la zone littorale (0-6 m) et Nitella flexilis, qui recouvre pratiquement tout le fond de la zone littori-profonde (6-19 m), forment une biomasse environ 140 fois supérieure à la biomasse moyenne de phytoplancton pendant la période estivale. Nitella flexilis constitue 80 % de la biomasse algale benthique; les variations de sa teneur en Chlorophylle traduisent une adaptation aux modifications du climat lumineux qu'elle détermine en partie. La colonisation de substrats artificiels s'avère peu adéquate pour évaluer la production du périphyton; elle indique cependant une productivité 10 fois moindre en zone littorale qu'en zone littori-profonde. Les mesures, au 14C, du taux d'assimilation de Nitella flexilis et des algues épiphytes révèlent qu'à la suite de phénomènes de compensation par le développement du périphyton et l'ajustement de la teneur en Chlorophylle, l'activité photosynthétique dépend peu de la lumière. La contribution des algues benthiques à la production primaire est évaluée à 30 %. Leur rôle dans le cycle des éléments chimiques est envisagé.
