Normal and dexamethasone-induced parturition were compared in Merino and prolific Booroola Merinos carrying crossbred foetuses. Behavioural observations were recorded for 42 single-, 27 twin- and 10 triplet-bearing ewes. After treatment on day 144 of gestation, ewes injected with dexamethasone lambed 41 h earlier than ewes injected with phosphate buffer. On the phosphate-buffer treatment, Booroola Merino ewes lambed 22 h earlier than Merino ewes. Twin- and triplet-bearing ewes which were induced to lamb had a significantly longer duration of labour than ewes bearing singles which were induced to lamb, and ewes, regardless of litter size, which lambed naturally. Induction of parturition had no significant effect on the lambs' behaviour subsequently. Lamb survival was not influenced by dexamethasone treatment but was significantly influenced by lamb birth weight, which declined as litter size increased.

Six cereal straws and two traditional hays were used to study the relationship between voluntary dry matter (DM) intake and chemical composition and ruminal degradation characteristics. The voluntary DM intake was measured during 60 days using Barbarin adult ewes given food individually in four groups of six animals. The forages were offered to the ewes twice daily and were supplemented with 10 g DM of soya-bean meal per kg M0·75 per day and 30 g per ewe per day of a commercial mixture of minerals and vitamins. The chemical composition and the leaf/stem (L/S) ratio of the forages were determined. Their ruminal degradation characteristics were measured by using the nylon bag technique according to the exponential model Dg = a + b (1 – e−ct). Crude protein contents of straws ranged from 22 to 35 g/kg DM and that of hays from 35 to 57 g/kg DM. The corresponding values of L/S ratio varied from 0·68 to 0·88. The voluntary DM intake was highly variable and the hays were ingested at greater amounts than the straws, although their degradable (b) and their rate of digestion (c) were not significantly different (P > 0·05).

Significant relationships were established between voluntary DM intake and the neutral-detergent fibre (R2 = −0·72; P < 0·001), acid-detergent fibre (R2 = −0·75; P < 0·001) and a values (R2 = 0·83; P < 0·001). The precision of the prediction was significantly improved using ruminal degradation characteristics (Syx = 4·42) compared with the chemical composition (Syx = 5·60).

Work in the United States of America has shown that dietary supplements of nickel (Ni) can result in an increase in rumen urease activity and can increase growth rate and food conversion efficiency in lambs and steers given low protein diets. It has been suggested that Ni enhances urea recycling through its effect on urease activity. To examine this hypothesis, four sheep were given a high-energy, lowprotein diet with or without a supplement of 5 mg/day Ni, given as NiCl2.6H2O by continuous infusion into the rumen. Urea irreversible loss rate (ILR) and pool size were measured by means of a single intravenous injection of 14C-urea. The addition of Ni resulted in a significant increase in rumen urease activity (P < 0·05) but there was no significant effect on urea ILR, urea pool size, urinary urea excretion or on the quantity of urea recycled to the gastro-intestinal tract. Ni also had no effect on plasma urea or rumen ammonia concentrations, on diet digestibility or on nitrogen retention. It is concluded that the enhancement of urease activity by supplementary Ni conferred no nutritional advantage to the sheep.

Data were collected during 1961–2 on the live-weight, age and warm carcass weights of 83 lots of Israel-Friesian bull calves, 525 animals in all, the offspring of 26 sires. For varying numbers of these animals weight of various non-saleable fat components, including ruminal fat, kidney fat, inguinal fat and scapular fat were also obtained. Ruminal fat alone and ruminal fat plus kidney fat were found to be highly correlated with total non-saleable fat (r = 0·84 and 0·94, respectively). Heritability of dressing percentage was 0·20, of live-weight rate-of-gain 0·92, and of carcass rate-ofgain 0·49. The genetic correlation between live-weight and carcass weight was 0·7. Between-lot correlations indicated that increased rate-of-gain achieved through management will be accompanied by decreased dressing percentage and increased non-saleable fat content.

Measurements of growth rate, food intake and food conversion efficiency on 235 Hereford bulls, from the first 4 years of a selection experiment, were used to assess the effects of rearing method, dam age and year/season of birth. Bulls were either reared artificially from birth to 84 days of age, or reared on their own dam to 84 or 168 days of age, to examine whether non-genetic effects on performance could be reduced by early weaning. All bulls were performance tested on ad libitum feeding from 200 to 400 days of age. Artificially-reared bulls had lower live weights at the start of test, which led to higher food conversion efficiency on test. Bulls reared naturally to 84 days of age were least affected by dam age and year/season of birth and performed as well as those weaned at 168 days of age. Earlier weaning of bulls entering central performance tests would reduce these environmental effects on performance, and may increase the accuracy of identifying bulls with genetically-superior growth and efficiency.

Shorn Blackface sheep were acclimatized to cold by acute or chronic exposures. Acclimatization caused increased resistance to body cooling (IRC) during acute exposure and elevated heart rates at thermoneutrality (28°C). The length of time these effects were retained during subsequent periods at thermoneutrality was monitored.The effect of moderate heat stress (36°C) on previous cold acclimatization was also measured in Blackface and Merino sheep.

Conclusions were:

1. IRC resulted from previous exposure to chronic cold or acute cold. IRC induced by chronic cold began to decay after 2 weeks at thermoneutrality. IRC induced by one acute exposure was maximal 2 weeks after exposure and had disappeared by 8 weeks. IRC induced by two acute exposures combined with chronic cold showed little decrease even after 8 weeks at thermoneutrality.

2. Merino sheep showed 50% lower initial cold resistance and smaller IRC following acclimatization than equivalent Blackfaces.

3. Heat stress for 10 days after cold acclimatization had no effect on IRC in Blackfaces or Merinos.

4. Heart rates measured at 28°C were increased by 20 to 50% following acute and chronic cold exposure. After 3 days at thermoneutrality about 70% of the increase remained; but after 8 days almost all the increase had disappeared.

5. Two components of cold acclimatization were distinguished:

(i) Increased resistance to body cooling probably caused by an enhanced peak metabolic rate capability.

(ii) Increased resting metabolic rate evidenced by high heart rates. After the cessation of cold treatment the rates of decay of these two components were different.

The growth rate and food conversion efficiency of fattening lambs given all-concentrate diets have been reported by Philip Preston and Greenhalgh (1964). The lambs were weaned abruptly at 8 weeks old and fed thereafter ad libitum on cereal and protein supplement. Owen, Davies and Ridgman (1965) have reported the same measures of performance for artificially reared lambs fed from 30 lb. to slaughter at 75 lb. on diets varying indigestibility. A considerable amount of information has been obtained recently on the nitrogen metabolism of young calves fed on all-concentrate diets (see Preston, Whitelaw, MacLeod and Philip, 1965, and Bowers, Preston, McDonald, MacLeod and Philip, 1965) but there is less information of a similar nature for lambs fed on such diets. The following experiment was carried out to assess the intake of energy and utilisation of dietary nitrogen by lambs fed ad libitum on three simple all-concentrate diets during the latter stages of fattening.

This report gives an account of the paternal half-sib analysis of carcass quality, based on commercial joint dissection, on Down cross sheep collected in the four years 1962–65 inclusive. It also includes a discussion of the multiplicative correction factors used, and the phenotypic and genetic correlations between all the traits, estimated from the pooled within-farm, within-year analysis. It shows that there is very little genetic variation for many of the characters but that the percentage leg, percentage best end, age at slaughter and eye-muscle area have much additive genetic variation remaining for worthwhile response to be expected from selection. These three carcass traits are also the most important characters in determining the commercial value and saleability of lamb. From the results obtained it is argued that there is still much genetic variation for fat development in sheep.

In two experiments of Latin square design the effect of additives on the ad libitum intake of direct-cut perennial ryegrass silage and its digestibility by steers was determined. The diets were offered to British Friesian castrated male cattle, mean initial live weights 386 and 368 kg for Experiments 1 and 2 respectively. In Experiment 1, untreated silage was compared with silage treated with either formic acid (‘Add-F’) or a formalin and sulphuric acid mixture (‘Sylade’) each applied at the rate of 4·5 1/tonne of fresh herbage. The silages were offered either with or without 5 kg of supplement per day. In Experiment 2, silages treated with 4·5 and 9·0 1/tonne of the formalin and sulphuric acid mixture were compared. Silage treated with 4·5 1/tonne was offered either with or without 5 kg supplement/day. In Experiment 1, the application of an additive had no significant effect on silage digestibility. Although differences were not significant, the intake of silage dry matter was higher from additive-treated silage (91·2 and 80·6 g/kg W0·73 for the formalin and sulphuric acid mixture and the formic acid respectively) than from untreated silage (78·0 g/kg W0·73). Supplementation significantly reduced (P<0·05) silage dry-matter intake and crude fibre digestibility and significantly increased (P<0·05) total dry matter and digestible energy intake. Digestible energy intake from the formalin and sulphuric acid treated silage was significantly higher (P<0·05) than that from untreated silage but differences between the additive-treated silages were not significant.

In Experiment 2, neither rate of application of the formalin and sulphuric acid mixture nor supplementation had any significant effect on intake.

Two digestion trials were conducted using sheep fed whole grains of triticale, wheat or maize on an equal amount or an isonitrogenous basis. Nine ewes were used in a 10-day collection period for each trial. Both trials consisted of three treatment groups of three animals each. Each ewe received daily either 1200 g of a diet containing 740 g (per kg diet) triticale, wheat or maize (trial 1) or 900 g of a diet containing 650, 650 and 600 g (per kg diet), respectively, of the above grains. Digestibilities of various nutrients, dry matter and organic matter were generally similar among treatments. However, apparent digestibility of crude fibre was significantly higher for ewes fed triticale than for those fed maize or wheat diets.

In three trials, two with suckler cows and one with lambs, supplementary forms of dietary nitrogen and/or energy were added to a basal diet of barley straw offered ad libitum. The nitrogenous supplements appeared to have a small effect on the intake of straw but only when they were available for frequent consumption. The addition of cereals to the diet did not affect the intake or digestibility of the straw but reduced the live-weight losses.

The relationship between the composition of the fat-free carcass and carcass fatness was studied by considering the relationship as one between two shape vectors, with the effect of size removed, using an extension of the multivariate linear least squares technique for studying multivariate allometry.

In two sets of data, one of dressed carcasses of cattle and the other of empty carcasses of lambs, the composition of the fat-free carcass (in terms of protein, water and ash) was significantly related to carcass fatness (P < 0·10 and P < 0·05 respectively). The consequences of this relationship to the study of the chemical composition of carcasses are discussed.

Examination of the relationship in more detail showed that the fatter carcasses were those with more protein and less water in their fat-free carcass, in both sets of data, and with more ash in the empty carcasses of lambs.

In six experiments carried out on individually penned Finn Dorset ewes estimates were made of the quantities of non-ammonia nitrogen (NAN) reaching the abomasum and truly digested in the small intestine. For experiments 1 and 2 which each involved 33 ewes given a complete diet of milled hay and concentrates supplemented with varying amounts of a good-quality fish meal during late pregnancy, the overall regression estimate for the daily amount of truly digested NAN required for zero N retention (ewe plus conceptus) was 438 mg/kg M0·75 (441 and 434 for experiments 1 and 2 respectively). The coefficients for the efficiency of utilization of increments of truly digested NAN and maternal tissue N for net N accretion in the conceptus were 0·48 (s.e. 0·039) and 0·84 (s.e. 0·127) respectively.

In experiment 3, 24 lactating ewes had their diet supplemented with either soya-bean meal or fish meal. There was no effect of protein source on the amounts of NAN reaching the abomasum in ewes fitted with an abomasal cannula or on milk yield and these observations confirmed the unusually high degradability (measured by the polyester bag technique) of the fish-meal protein in the rumen. For experiments 4, 5 and 6 a total of 36 ewes were used to test the efficiency with which the NAN truly digested in the small intestine was used for the synthesis of milk protein. In the absence of data on the possible contribution of body tissue N to milk N the coefficient for the apparent efficiency of utilization of truly digested NAN when the ewes were given a basal diet containing approximately 10 g crude protein per MJ metabolizable energy was 0·63. For those ewes receiving the basal diet supplemented with either soya-bean meal, fish meal or blood meal the coefficients for the efficiency of utilization for the production of milk N of the increments in truly digested NAN supplied by the three protein sources were 0·61, 0·54 and 0·29 respectively. It is suggested that the low coefficient for blood meal may be due to its low content of methionine.

Four diets containing either 0 or 50 g fat per kg were prepared from a basal mix of barley, sugar-beet pulp, soya-bean meal and molasses. The fats used were tallow (saturated), soya-acid oil (unsaturated), or a 45:5 mixture of both fats. The diets were given with chopped dried grass to adult wether sheep in the ratio 4:1 of diet to dried grass. Measurements of heat production of the sheep were made in closed-circuit respiration chambers and from the data the efficiencies of utilization of energy for maintenance (km) and production (kf) were calculated for each diet, together with the metabolizable energy (ME) values for the fats.

Values for both km and kf were not significantly different between diets, the means were 0·81 and 0·61 respectively. The ME values (MJ/kg DM) of the fats were for tallow 36·2, for soya-acid oil 36·6 and for the tallow/soya mixture 31·6; these values were not significantly different.

No evidence of any synergistic effect caused by the addition of an unsaturated fat to a saturated fat was seen in this experiment.

The potential of using low glucosinolate full-fat rapeseed meal (FFR) in the diets of early-weaned piglets was investigated in this experiment. FFR (containing 17 (xmol total glucosinolates and 2·8 mg erucic acid per g of whole seed) was used on an isonitrogenous basis at either 200 g<kg or 400 g<kg to replace full-fat soya-bean meal. Four replicates of three contemporary pen groups of 10 piglets weaned between 3 and 4 weeks of age were randomly allocated at a mean initial weight of 8·41 (s.e. 1·105) kg to the three dietary treatments. The experimental diets were given for 3 weeks. Inclusion of FFR significantly depressed food intake, daily live-weight gain and food conversion. There were no significant differences between the performance of piglets given either 200 or 400 g FFR per kg. Intakes of the diets containing FFR per unit of metabolic body weight as a proportion of the control diet decreased from about 0·85 to 0·75 from the 1st to the last week of the feeding period. This suggested that the acceptability of diets containing FFR decreased with time, possibly due to the presence of unpalatable and perhaps antinutritive factors which may include glucosinolates although present at relatively low concentrations. It was concluded that the feeding value of FFR would need to be improved by development of oilseed rape varieties with much lower levels of glucosinolates.

(1) Eight groups of newly weaned lambs were given diets containing 15, 30, 45 or 60% dried poultry waste (DPW) from battery or broiler units in a 4x2 factorial experiment lasting 16 weeks. The Cu content of the diets increased from 12·7 to 35·5 and from 16·1 to 47·1 mg/kg DM with increasing levels of battery and broiler waste, respectively.

(2) As inclusion rates increased, final liver Cu concentrations were 269, 318, 379 and 441 with battery waste and 686, 1009, 877 and 874 mg/kg DM with broiler waste. Total liver Cu accumulation, though higher on broiler than on battery waste, was not proportional to inclusion rate and reached a plateau at the 30% level for both sources.

(3) Mean hepatic Cu retention was constant at 4·8 % of Cu intake with battery waste but decreased from 8·3 to 3·2% as level of broiler waste increased.

(4) Plasma asparate amino transferase (PAAT) levels were highest in groups given broiler waste and final PAAT concentrations were correlated with liver Cu concentration, reaching levels associated with Cu toxicosis in some individuals. The effect of DPW on PAAT was not proportional to inclusion rate.

(5) The factors responsible for the observed variations in liver Cu accumulation between sources and inclusion rates and the possibility of Cu toxicity occurring in sheep given DPW are discussed.

The response of pigs to supplemental biotin (500 μg/kg diet) was studied in a growth trial from 15 to 88 kg live weight. Food: gain ratio was significantly improved during the grower phase and there was a tendency for improvement in the starter and finisher phases. There was also a tendency towards improved carcass grading.

The rôle of growth hormone (GH) in normal growth is well established, but its rôle during recovery after live-weight loss in adults is less defined. This study examined the interaction of endogenous GH with energy or protein supplements during re-feeding of ewes in low body condition. Control ewes and ewes immunized against growth hormone-releasing hormone were housed in individual pens and given food below maintenance for 107 days, before re-feeding was initiated by supplementing half of each group with either fish meal or barley for 28 days (P1), after which the supplements were switched for a further 28 days (P2). Following supplementation, the ewes grazed abundant green pasture for 92 days before slaughter. Immunization reduced plasma concentrations of GH, insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and prolactin. Production responses to the two food supplements were similar in the control and immunized ewes, but when grazed at pasture immunized ewes gained live weight more slowly (P = 0·06), grew less wool (P<0·01), and had heavier fat depots, but lighter carcass, skin and liver weights at slaughter. The sequence of re-feeding treatments affected subsequent wool production in both control and immunized ewes. During P2, and for 52 days after supplementation ceased, ewes supplemented with fish meal then barley (F/B) produced less wool (P < 0·05) than those supplemented with barley followed by fish meal (B/F). At slaughter, the F/B ewes had lighter omental and kidney fat depots than the B/F ewes (P < 0·05). It is concluded that during live-weight regain, endogenous GH initially affected fat deposition, which in turn affected food intake and wool growth. Furthermore, provision of supplements with a high protein to energy ratio to sheep in low body condition, followed by supplements with a low protein to energy ratio, caused a prolonged suppression of wool growth. This effect was not mediated by endogenous GH.

The effects of sward, breed type and sex on lamb growth and carcass composition were measured at two degrees of maturity in live weight. The three breed types were Scottish Blackface (no. = 60), Suffolk (no. = 59) and their reciprocal crosses (no. = 60). The lambs grazed swards of either ryegrass, clover or a mixed sward intended to contain both. The proportion of the mixed sward as clover was only 0.014. Each lamb was scanned using X-ray computed tomography to measure the weights of fat, lean and bone in the carcass at two proportions of mature body weight (0.30 and 0.45). Live weights were recorded weekly. Average daily gains (ADG) in live weight and carcass tissues were calculated for each lamb between the 0.30 and 0.45 stages of maturity.

At the 0-30 stage of maturity, breed type differences in carcass composition were small; the Scottish Blackface had 0.942 as much bone as the Suffolk lambs (P < 0.001), with the cross lambs intermediate. At the 0-45 stage of maturity, Scottish Blackface lambs had less fat (0.749 times as much; P < 0.001), more lean (1.065 times as much; P < 0.001) and more bone (1.055 times as much; P < 0-001) than did Suffolk lambs. The values for crossbred lambs were intermediate but closer to those of the Suffolk. Neither sward nor its interaction with breed type had any significant effect on carcass composition at either the 0-30 or 0-45 stage of maturity. The effect of sex on carcass composition was significant at the 0-45 stage of maturity when castrated male lambs had less fat (P < 0.001) and more lean (P < 0.001) than female lambs. There were breed type by sward interactions for ADG in live weight (P < 0.05), in carcass weight (P < 0.001), and in fat (P < 0.001) and bone weights (P < 0.05). The interactions were such that Suffolk lambs had higher growth rates than Scottish Blackface lambs on clover but not on ryegrass or the mixed sward. There were no significant differences between Suffolk and crossbred lambs in growth rates on any sward. In this, and in two other experiments, the extent to which growth rate declined as the nutritional environment became worse was greater (P < 0.05) in Suffolk than in Scottish Blackface lambs; that is, Suffolk lambs expressed greater environmental sensitivity than the Scottish Blackface.

Commencing on day 100 ± 10 of lactation, 10 Italian Friesian cows averaging 32·6 kg milk per day were injected biweekly with recombinant bovine somatotropin (BST), while 10 other cows averaging 33-4 kg milk per day were injected with a placebo. Cows were offered ad libitum a total mixed diet throughout the lactation. The experiment lasted 16 weeks; milk samples were taken before and 16, 62 and 91 days after the commencement of BST injection. The objective was to determine the impact of biweekly injections of BST on the synthesis and proportion of milk fatty acids, particularly on cis and trans isomers and on fatty acids with an odd number of carbon atoms (C15 and C17). A decrease in the proportion of shortchain (C4 to C14) fatty acids (P < 0·001) and an increase in the proportion of long-chain (C16 to C20) fatty acids (P < 0·001) were observed in the first period of the treatment. With regard to cis and trans isomers, a considerable increase of the cis isomers (P < 0·001), particularly C18.1cis9 (oleic acid) was observed, while differences in trans isomers were not statistically significant. Concentrations of C15 (pentadecanoic acid) were not affected but heptadecanoic acid (C17) concentration showed a considerable increase (P < 0·01) but only in the sample taken after 16 days.
