“Buying local״ has become one of the most important trends in food marketing. Despite widespread public attention, the influence of the “local״ attribute on food prices is not well understood. We aim to begin to fill this gap in research by exploring the presence of a price premium for “local״ in actual market transactions. Using scanner data on fresh packaged lettuce in the Honolulu market and hedonic modeling, we investigate consumers’ revealed preferences for the attribute. Contrary to the positive willingness to pay for local food widely reported in previous studies, we find no local premium for fresh lettuce in the Honolulu market.

This study explores factors driving tract-level heterogeneity in the quality of leases executed by property owners who transfer their mineral rights to firms that drill for and extract natural gas. The data set consists of tract-level aggregates of lease terms, our measures of lease quality, and tract-level census data from the leases. We find that higher-quality leases are negatively correlated with higher concentration of minority households when controlling for census-tract-level characteristics. Based on the findings, we propose policies to reduce observed heterogeneity in the quality of leases and, subsequently, to reduce residents' exposure to negative effects of nearby well sites.

The authors present an analytical model of a first-price sealed-bid cattle auction in which a spot and coordinated markets are interconnected. The model reveals that the conventional wisdom that market coordination negatively affects the bid price in the spot market is an oversimplification. The relationships between key market variables impact bids and bid shading in complex ways. While captive supplies can lead to lower spot prices, the price reductions do not necessarily stem from an increase in market power due to contracting. The model emphasizes the importance of several variables for future empirical studies.

This study examines in an empirical comparison how different econometric specifications of stochastic frontier models affect the decomposition of total factor productivity growth. We estimate nine stochastic frontier models, which have been widely used in empirical investigations of sources of productivity growth. Our results show that the relative contribution of components to total factor productivity growth is quite sensitive to the choice of econometric model, which points to the need to select the “right” model. We apply various statistical tests to narrow the range of applicable models and identify additional criteria upon which to base the choice of non-nested models.

Fracking is a controversial practice but is thriving in many areas. We combine a comprehensive data set on local bans and moratoria in the state of New York with local-level census data and spatial characteristics in a spatial econometric analysis of local fracking policies. Some factors, including location in the Utica shale, proportion of registered Democrats, and education level, increase the probability of restrictions on fracking. Extent of local land development, location in highly productive petroleum areas, and number of extant oil and gas wells are among factors that have a negative impact on the likelihood of a ban or moratorium.

We investigate geospatial and socio-demographic attributes that explain differences in community-level policies affecting unconventional gas development (UGD) in New York. We examine local policy decisions (i.e., municipal bans, moratoria, and pre-emptive resolutions supporting development) through ordered probit models and middle-inflated and zero-inflated ordered probits to account for communities without UGD policies and estimate a spatial ordered probit to address spatial correlations between communities' decisions. Our findings suggest that New York communities near Pennsylvania UGD are more likely to support UGD. Communities that are predominantly Democrat or have more citizens who have bachelor's degrees are more likely to adopt policies opposing UGD.
