Numerical investigation of the effect of pylon geometry within a pylon-cavity aided Supersonic Combustion Ramjet (SCRAMJET) combustor on mixing enhancement, flame-holding capability, fuel jet penetration and total pressure loss are conducted in the current study. RANS equations for compressed real gas are solved by coupled, implicit, second-order upwind solver. A two-equation SST model is used for turbulence modelling. Validation of the computational model is performed with the help of experimental data collected using surface pressure taps, Schlieren flow visualisation and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The study uses four distinct pylon geometry cases, which include the baseline geometry. Sonic injection of hydrogen fuel through a 1mm diameter hole at 2mm downstream of the pylon rear face along the axis of the test section floor is performed for every case. A crossflow of Mach number 2.2 at four bar absolute pressure and standard atmospheric temperature is maintained. A comparative study of mixing efficiency, total pressure loss, fuel jet penetration and fuel plume area fraction for the different cases evaluate the mixing performance. The simulations show that the Pylon 2 case gives a significant improvement in the performance parameters compared to the other geometries. It is observed that mixing efficiency and fuel jet penetration capability of the system are highly dependent on the streamwise vortex within the flameholder.

In this paper, a robust three-dimensional guidance law against manoeuvering targets is designed using the approach of discrete-time partial stabilisation. In the proposed method, the equations of the guidance problem are divided into two subsystems where the asymptotic stability is desired only for the first one. The control input of the second subsystem is designed such that the collision to be ensured in a short time. Despite recent advances in technology and implementation of digital controllers, the design of guidance laws with the approach of discrete-time partial stabilisation has not been done, till now. One of the advantages of this paper is to design a discrete-time guidance law even with the difficulties of the discrete-time Lyapunov theorem. Moreover, the Lyapunov function is chosen based on the physics of the guidance problem (making the rate of line of sight (LOS) rotation close to zero), and it is shown that it is not possible to asymptotically stabilise the system in the case of manoeuvering targets. Nevertheless, to guarantee the collision with the target, it is enough to limit the rotation rate of LOS to a small value. Finally, simulation results are given to show the appropriate performance of the proposed guidance law.

Metop is the space segment of the EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS), which provides real-time data to several European meteorological services as well as to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other international agencies. The third Metop satellite, Metop-C, was launched on 7 November 2018 and shall enter in operations in few months, once the on-going commissioning of the meteorological products is completed. Each Metop satellite was designed to operate at least five years. A sequential deployment of the satellites was foreseen to achieve the target mission duration of 15 years, replacing an old one at end of life with a newer one; thanks to the excellent performances of the launchers and of the platform itself, and to continuous improvements to the fuel management, it was possible to extend the operational life of each satellite by a factor of three, still maintaining enough fuel to perform safe de-orbiting operations (foreseen for Metop-A, launched in 2006, at the end of 2021). This provided the opportunity to develop in 2012 (after Metop-B launch) dual-satellite products, which now, with the arrival of Metop-C, can evolve to tri-satellite; several decisions, concerning the selection of launch date and time as well as commissioning and operational locations, had to be been taken to achieve the target configuration; the analyses leading to these decisions are discussed here.

In the present study, fuzzy uncertainty and reliability analysis of aeroelastic aircraft wings are investigated. The uncertain air speed and structural parameters are represented by fuzzy triangular membership functions. These uncertainties are propagated through the wing model using a fuzzy interval approach, and the uncertain flutter speed is obtained as a fuzzy variable. Further, the reliability of the wing flutter is based on the interference area in the pyramid shape defined by the fuzzy flutter speed and air speed. The ratio between the safe region volume and the total volume of the pyramid gives the reliability value. Two different examples are considered—a typical wing section, and a clean wing—and the results are given for various wind speed conditions. The results show that the approach considered is a low-cost but suitable method to estimate the reliability of the wing flutter speed in the presence of uncertainties.

Recent research on Flight-deck Interval Management (FIM), a modern technology for increasing safety and improving airspace and runway utilisation through self-spacing, has led to the development of a new rule-based logic for FIM, namely Interval Management – Speed Planning (IM-SP). In an initial benchmark study, IM-SP showed good spacing performance with a significant reduction in speed commands, a major area of concern with previous FIM logics, resulting in a lower burden on the flight crew during FIM operation. Nevertheless, there remains scope for improvement in other aspects, such as fuel burn. In this study, the internal cost function of IM-SP is further analysed and optimised using speed-constrained multi-objective particle swarm optimisation to improve the performance of IM-SP under the multiple objectives of FIM. The optimisation renders new settings that address the problem areas, improve the speed commands and enhance the overall quality of IM-SP. Two distinctive solutions, viz. a spacing performance optimised setting and a fuel burn optimised setting, are further analysed and discussed, and directions for follow-up research are explored.

A formation control and obstacle avoidance algorithm has been introduced in this paper for the V-shape formation flight of fixed-wing UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) using the potential functions method. An innovative vector approach has been suggested to fix the conventional challenge in employing the artificial potential field (APF) approach (the creation of local minimums). A method called variable repulsive circles (VRC) has been then presented aimed at designing proper flight paths tailored with functional limitations of fixed-wing UAVs in facing obstacles. Finally, the efficiency of the designed algorithm has been examined and evaluated for different flight scenarios.

The development of oceanography and meteorology has greatly benefited from satellite-based data of Earth’s atmosphere and ocean. Traditional Earth observation missions have utilised Sun-synchronous orbits with repeat ground tracks due to their advantages in visible and infrared wavelengths. However, diversification of observation wavelengths and massive deployment of miniaturised satellites are both enabling and necessitating new kinds of space missions. This paper proposes several unconventional satellite orbits intended for use in, but not limited to, Earth observation. This ‘toolbox’ of orbits and taxonomy thereof will thus support the definition of design requirements for the individual satellites in nano-satellite constellations developed by national space agencies, industries and academia.

A range of quasi-steady and unsteady aerodynamic models are used to predict the aerodynamic forces experienced by a flapping wing and a detailed comparison amongst these predictions in provided. The complexity of the models ranges from the analytical potential flow model to the computational Unsteady Vortex Lattice Method (UVLM), which allows one to describe the motion of the wake and account for its influence on the fluid loads. The novelty of this effort lies in a modification of the predicted forces as a generalisation of the leading edge suction analogy. This modification is introduced to account for the delayed stall mechanism due to leading edge flow separation. The model predictions are compared with two sets of independent experimental data and with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation data available in the literature. It is found that both, the modified analytical model and the UVLM model can be used to describe the time history of the lift force, in some cases with better results than a high-fidelity CFD model. The models presented here constitute a useful basis for the aerodynamic design of bioinspired flapping-wings micro-air vehicles.

The coexistence of multiple stable states is indicative of self-organising processes occurring in the course of the combustor-inlet interactions in a ramjet engine and give rise to the appearance of various nonlinear phenomena. This paper provides a dynamic model that can describe the multiple stable states and the corresponding nonlinear effects to further investigate the dynamic interactions between combustor and inlet in a ramjet engine. Our study shows the whole engine can display distinct dynamic behaviours ranging from irreversibility to hysteresis and to various mode transitions, depending on different physical parameters. With the model, we also illustrate the role of the instability of the normal shock wave in impacting the whole engine’s nonlinear dynamics. Additionally, we extend the previous studies of the classification of combustor-inlet interactions from a static framework to a dynamic framework, which helps to clarify the transient processes of the nonlinear interactions. This work offers a quantitative illustration of the combustor-inlet interactions in a ramjet engine by revealing its nonlinear dynamics and associated characteristics, therefore advancing our understanding of the nonlinear phenomena that exhibit in ramjet engines.
