This paper is concerned with a low-dimensional dynamical system model for analytically solving partial differential equations (PDEs). The model proposed is based on a posterior optimal truncated weighted residue (POT-WR) method, by which an infinite dimensional PDE is optimally truncated and analytically solved in required condition of accuracy. To end that, a POT-WR condition for PDE under consideration is used as a dynamically optimal control criterion with the solving process. A set of bases needs to be constructed without any reference database in order to establish a space to describe low-dimensional dynamical system that is required. The Lagrangian multiplier is introduced to release the constraints due to the Galerkin projection, and a penalty function is also employed to remove the orthogonal constraints. According to the extreme principle, a set of ordinary differential equations is thus obtained by taking the variational operation of the generalized optimal function. A conjugate gradient algorithm by FORTRAN code is developed to solve the ordinary differential equations. The two examples of one-dimensional heat transfer equation and nonlinear Burgers’ equation show that the analytical results on the method proposed are good agreement with the numerical simulations and analytical solutions in references, and the dominant characteristics of the dynamics are well captured in case of few bases used only.

This paper aims to investigate nonlinear oscillations of an elevator cable in a drum drive. The governing equation of motion of the objective system is developed by virtue of Lagrangian’s method. A complicated term is broached in the governing equation of the motion of the system owing to existence of multiplication of a quadratic function of velocity with a sinusoidal function of displacement in the kinetic energy of the system. The obtained equation is an example of a well-known category of nonlinear oscillators, namely, non-natural systems. Due to the complex terms in the governing equation, perturbation methods cannot directly extract any closed form expressions for the natural frequency. Unavoidably, different non-perturbative approaches are employed to solve the problem and to elicit a closed-form expression for the natural frequency. Energy balance method, modified energy balance method and variational approach are utilized for frequency analyzing of the system. Frequency-amplitude relationships are analytically obtained for nonlinear vibration of the elevator’s drum. In order to examine accuracy of the obtained results, exact solutions are numerically obtained and then compared with those obtained from approximate closed-form solutions for several cases. In a parametric study for different nonlinear parameters, variation of the natural frequencies against the initial amplitude is investigated. Accuracy of the three different approaches is then discussed for both small and large amplitudes of the oscillations.

In this paper, a high-accuracy H1-Galerkin mixed finite element method (MFEM) for strongly damped wave equation is studied by linear triangular finite element. By constructing a suitable extrapolation scheme, the convergence rates can be improved from 𝒪(h) to 𝒪(h3) both for the original variable u in H1(Ω) norm and for the actual stress variable p = ∇ut in H(div;Ω) norm, respectively. Finally, numerical results are presented to confirm the validity of the theoretical analysis and excellent performance of the proposed method.

In this paper, an optimal bicubic finite volume method is established and analyzed for elliptic equations on quadrilateral meshes. Base on the so-called elementwise stiffness matrix analysis technique, we proceed the stability analysis. It is proved that the new scheme has optimal convergence rate in H1 norm. Additionally, we apply this analysis technique to bilinear finite volume method. Finally, numerical examples are provided to confirm the theoretical analysis of bicubic finite volume method.

In this paper, a method for extracting stress intensity factors (SIFs) in orthotropic thermoelasticity fracture by the extended finite element method (XFEM) and interaction integral method is present. The proposed method is utilized in linear elastic crack problems. The numerical results of the SIFs are presented and compared with those obtained using boundary element method (BEM). The good accordance among these two methods proves the applicability of the proposed approach and conforms its capability of efficiently extracting thermoelasticity fracture parameters in orthotropic material.

In this paper, we are devoted to nonlinear stability and B-convergence of additive Runge-Kutta (ARK) methods for nonlinear stiff problems with multiple stiffness. The concept of -algebraic stability of ARK methods for a class of stiff problems Kστ is introduced, and it is proven that this stability implies some contractive properties of the ARK methods. Some results on optimal B-convergence of ARK methods for Kσ,0 are given. These new results extend the existing ones of RK methods and ARK methods in the references. Numerical examples test the correctness of our theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we present numerical computational methods for solving the fracture problem in brittle and ductile materials with no prior knowledge of the topology of crack path. Moreover, these methods are capable of modeling the crack initiation. We perform numerical simulations of pieces of brittle material based on global approach and taken into account the thermal effect in crack propagation. On the other hand, we propose also a numerical method for solving the fracture problem in a ductile material based on elements deletion method and also using thermo-mechanical behavior and damage laws. In order to achieve the last purpose, we simulate the orthogonal cutting process.

Intrigued by our recent experimental work (H. Yamaguchi and X. D. Niu, J. Fluids Eng., 133 (2011), 041302), the present study numerically investigate the flow-structure interactions (FSI) of three rigid circular particles aligned moving in an inclined channel flow at intermediate Reynolds numbers by using a momentum-exchanged immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. A ”frog-leap” phenomenon observed in the experiment is successfully captured by the present simulation and flow characteristics and underlying FSI mechanisms of it are explored by examining the effects of the channel inclined angles and Reynolds numbers. It is found that the asymmetric difference of the vorticity distributions on the particle surface is the main cause of the “frog-leap” when particle moves in the boundary layer near the lower channel boundary.

A new scheme for the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation with the accuracy order of is proposed. The multi-symplectic conservation property of the new scheme is proved. The backward error analysis of the new multi-symplectic scheme is also implemented. The solitary wave evolution behaviors of the Zakharov-Kunetsov equation is investigated by the new multi-symplectic scheme. The accuracy of the scheme is analyzed.

One of the useful methods for offshore oil exploration in the deep regions is the use of tension leg platforms (TLP). The effective mass fluctuating of the structure which due to its vibration can be noted as one of the important issues about these platforms. With this description, dynamic analysis of these structures will play a significant role in their design. Differential equations of motion of such systems are nonlinear and providing a useful method for its analysis is very important. Also, the amount of added mass coefficient has a direct effect on the level of nonlinearity of partial differential equation of these systems. In this study, Homotopy analysis method has been used for closed form solution of the governing differential equation. Linear springs have been used for modeling the stiffness of this system and the effects of torsion, bending and damping of water have been ignored. In the study of obtained results, the effect of added mass coefficient has been investigated. The results show that increasing of this coefficient decreases the bottom amplitude of fluctuations and the system frequency. The obtained results from this method are in good agreement with the published results on the valid articles.

An analysis is carried out to study the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow and heat transfer characteristics of an electrically conducting dusty non-Newtonian fluid, namely, the upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid over a stretching sheet. The stretching velocity and the temperature at the surface are assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the origin. Using a similarity transformation, the governing nonlinear partial differential equations of the model problem are transformed into coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations and the equations are solved numerically by a second order finite difference implicit method known as the Keller-box method. Comparisons with the available results in the literature are presented as a special case. The effects of the physical parameters on the fluid velocity, the velocity of the dust particle, the density of the dust particle, the fluid temperature, the dust-phase temperature, the skin friction, and the wall-temperature gradient are presented through tables and graphs. It is observed that, Maxwell fluid reduces the wall-shear stress. Also, the fluid particle interaction reduces the fluid temperature in the boundary layer. Furthermore, the results obtained for the flow and heat transfer characteristics reveal many interesting behaviors that warrant further study on the non-Newtonian fluid flow phenomena, especially the dusty UCM fluid flow phenomena.

A novel meshless scheme is proposed for inverse source identification problems of Helmholtz-type equations. It is formulated by the non-singular general solutions of the Helmholtz-type equations augmented with radial basis functions. Under this meshless scheme, we can determine smooth source terms from partially accessible boundary measurements with accurate results. Numerical examples are presented to verify validity and accuracy of the present scheme. It is demonstrated that the present scheme is simple, accurate, stable and computationally efficient for inverse smooth source identification problems.

An implicit discontinuous Galerkin method is introduced to solve the time-domain Maxwell’s equations in metamaterials. The Maxwell’s equations in metamaterials are represented by integral-differential equations. Our scheme is based on discontinuous Galerkin method in spatial domain and Crank-Nicolson method in temporal domain. The fully discrete numerical scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. When polynomial of degree at most p is used for spatial approximation, our scheme is verified to converge at a rate of O(τ2+hp+1/2). Numerical results in both 2D and 3D are provided to validate our theoretical prediction.

This article summaries a numerical study of thermo-solutal natural convection in a square cavity filled with anisotropic porous medium. The side walls of the cavity are maintained at constant temperatures and concentrations, whereas bottom wall is a function of non-uniform (sinusoidal) temperature and concentration. The non-Darcy Brinkmann model is considered. The governing equations are solved numerically by spectral element method using the vorticity-stream-function approach. The controlling parameters for present study are Darcy number (Da), heat source intensity i.e., thermal Rayleigh number (Ra), permeability ratio (K*), orientation angle (ϕ). The main attention is given to understand the impact of anisotropy parameters on average rates of heat transfer (bottom, Nub, side Nus) and mass transfer (bottom, Shb, side, Shs) as well as on streamlines, isotherms and iso-concentration. Numerical results show that, for irrespective value of K*, the heat and mass transfer rates are negligible for 10−7 ≤ Da ≤ 10−5, Ra = 2 × 105 and ϕ = 45°. However a significant impact appears on Nusselt and Sherwood numbers when Da lies between 10−5 to 10−4. The maximum bottom heat and mass transfer rates (Nub, Sub) is attained at ϕ = 45°, when K* =0.5 and 2.0. Furthermore, both heat and mass transfer rates increase on increasing Rayleigh number (Ra) for all the values of K*. Overall, It is concluded from the above study that due to anisotropic permeability the flow dynamics becomes complex.

A high-order numerical method for three-dimensional hydrodynamics is presented. The present method applies high-order compact schemes in space and a Runge-Kutta scheme in time to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the k-ε turbulence model in an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. In addition, a two-dimensional equation is derived from the depth-averaged momentum equations to predict the water level. The proposed method is first validated by its application to simulate flow in a 180° curved laboratory flume. It is found that the simulated results agree with measurements and are better than those from SIMPLEC algorithm. Then the method is applied to study three-dimensional hydrodynamics in a natural river, and the simulated results are in accordance with measurements.

A Legendre-collocation method is proposed to solve the nonlinear Volterra integral equations of the second kind. We provide a rigorous error analysis for the proposed method, which indicate that the numerical errors in L2-norm and L∞-norm will decay exponentially provided that the kernel function is sufficiently smooth. Numerical results are presented, which confirm the theoretical prediction of the exponential rate of convergence.

A heated triangular cylinder is suddenly cooled in a constant temperature bath. The transient heat conduction problem is transformed to the Helmholtz equation related to the vibration of membranes. Using the membrane analogy, exact analytic solutions for the transient heat conduction problem for three triangular cross sections are found.

In this paper, we consider a fully discrete local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) finite element method for a time-fractional Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. The method is based on a finite difference scheme in time and local discontinuous Galerkin methods in space. We show that our scheme is unconditionally stable and convergent through analysis. Numerical examples are shown to illustrate the efficiency and accuracy of our scheme.

This paper presents a numerical study of the sensitivity of a fluid model known as time relaxation model with respect to variations of the time relaxation coefficient χ. The sensitivity analysis of this model is utilized by the sensitivity equation method and uses the finite element method along with Crank Nicolson method in the fully discretization of the partial differential equations. We present a test case in support of the sensitivity convergence and also provide a numerical comparison between two different strategies of computing the sensitivity, sensitivity equation method and forward finite differences.

An inverse problem of identifying inhomogeneity or crack in the workpiece made of nonlinear magnetic material is investigated. To recover the shape from the local measurements, a piecewise constant level set algorithm is proposed. By means of the Lagrangian multiplier method, we derive the first variation w.r.t the piecewise constant level set function and obtain the descent direction by the adjoint variable method. Numerical results show the robustness and effectiveness of our algorithm applied to reconstruct some complex shapes.
