In this work, the Bishop and Love models for longitudinal vibrations are adopted to study the dynamics of isotropic rods with conical and exponential cross-sections. Exact solutions of both models are derived, using appropriate transformations. The analytical solutions of these two models are obtained in terms of generalised hypergeometric functions and Legendre spherical functions respectively. The exact solution of Love model for a rod with exponential cross-section is expressed as a sum of Gauss hypergeometric functions. The models are solved numerically by using the method of lines to reduce the original PDE to a system of ODEs. The accuracy of the numerical approximations is studied in the case of special solutions.

An analysis is performed to study the influence of local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) on unsteady MHD laminar boundary layer flow of viscous, incompressible fluid over a vertical stretching plate embedded in a sparsely packed porous medium in the presence of heat generation/absorption. The flow in the porous medium is governed by Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model. A uniform heat source or sink is presented in the solid phase. By applying similarity analysis, the governing partial differential equations are transformed into a set of time dependent non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations and they are solved numerically by Runge-Kutta Fehlberg method along with shooting technique. The obtained results are displayed graphically to illustrate the influence of different physical parameters on the velocity, temperature profile and heat transfer rate for both fluid and solid phases. Moreover, the numerical results obtained in this study are compared with the existing literature in the case of LTE and found that they are in good agreement.

In this work, we develop an adaptive algorithm for solving elliptic optimal control problems with simultaneously appearing state and control constraints. The algorithm combines a Moreau-Yosida technique for handling state constraints with a semi-smooth Newton method for solving the optimality systems of the regularized sub-problems. The state and adjoint variables are discretized using continuous piecewise linear finite elements while a variational discretization concept is applied for the control. To perform the adaptive mesh refinements cycle we derive local error estimators which extend the goal-oriented error approach to our setting. The performance of the overall adaptive solver is assessed by numerical examples.

Von Neumann stability theory is applied to analyze the stability of a fully coupled implicit (FCI) scheme based on the lower-upper symmetric Gauss-Seidel (LU-SGS) method for inviscid chemical non-equilibrium flows. The FCI scheme shows excellent stability except the case of the flows involving strong recombination reactions, and can weaken or even eliminate the instability resulting from the stiffness problem, which occurs in the subsonic high-temperature region of the hypersonic flow field. In addition, when the full Jacobian of chemical source term is diagonalized, the stability of the FCI scheme relies heavily on the flow conditions. Especially in the case of high temperature and subsonic state, the CFL number satisfying the stability is very small. Moreover, we also consider the effect of the space step, and demonstrate that the stability of the FCI scheme with the diagonalized Jacobian can be improved by reducing the space step. Therefore, we propose an improved method on the grid distribution according to the flow conditions. Numerical tests validate sufficiently the foregoing analyses. Based on the improved grid, the CFL number can be quickly ramped up to large values for convergence acceleration.

In this paper, we focus on graphical processing unit (GPU) and discuss how its architecture affects the choice of algorithm and implementation of fully-implicit petroleum reservoir simulation. In order to obtain satisfactory performance on new many-core architectures such as GPUs, the simulator developers must know a great deal on the specific hardware and spend a lot of time on fine tuning the code. Porting a large petroleum reservoir simulator to emerging hardware architectures is expensive and risky. We analyze major components of an in-house reservoir simulator and investigate how to port them to GPUs in a cost-effective way. Preliminary numerical experiments show that our GPU-based simulator is robust and effective. More importantly, these numerical results clearly identify the main bottlenecks to obtain ideal speedup on GPUs and possibly other many-core architectures.

The control of convective heat transfer from a heated circular cylinder immersed in an electrically conducting fluid is achieved using an externally imposed magnetic field. A Higher Order Compact Scheme (HOCS) is used to solve the governing energy equation in cylindrical polar coordinates. The HOCS gives fourth order accurate results for the temperature field. The behavior of local Nusselt number, mean Nusselt number and temperature field due to variation in the aligned magnetic field is evaluated for the parameters 5≤Re≤40, 0≤N≤20 and 0.065≤Pr≤7. It is found that the convective heat transfer is suppressed by increasing the strength of the imposed magnetic field until a critical value of N, the interaction parameter, beyond which the heat transfer increases with further increase in N. The results are found to be in good agreement with recent experimental studies.

Integrable couplings of the Boiti-Pempinelli-Tu hierarchy are constructed by a class of non-semisimple block matrix loop algebras. Further, through using the variational identity theory, the Hamiltonian structures of those integrable couplings are obtained. The method can be applied to obtain other integrable hierarchies.

Mast cells (MCs) play an important role in the immune system. Through connective tissues, mechanical stimuli activate intracellular calcium signaling pathways, induce a variety of mediators including leukotriene C4 (LTC4) release, and affect MCs’ microenvironment. This paper focuses on MCs’ intracellular calcium dynamics and LTC4 release responding to mechanical stimuli, explores signaling pathways in MCs and the effect of interstitial fluid flow on the transport of biological messengers and feedback in the MCs network. We use a mathematical model to show that (i) mechanical stimuli including shear stress induced by interstitial fluid flow can activate mechano-sensitive (MS) ion channels on MCs’ membrane and allow Ca2+ entry, which increases intracellular Ca2+ concentration and leads to LTC4 release; (ii) LTC4 in the extracellular space (ECS) acts on surface cysteinyl leukotriene receptors (LTC4R) on adjacent cells, leading to Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ release-activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channels. An elevated intracellular Ca2+ concentration further stimulates LTC4 release and creates a positive feedback in the MCs network. The findings of this study may facilitate our understanding of the mechanotransduction process in MCs induced by mechanical stimuli, contribute to understanding of interstitial flow-related mechanobiology in MCs network, and provide a methodology for quantitatively analyzing physical treatment methods including acupuncture and massage in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

In this paper, we discuss the dependence of the solutions on the parameters (order, initial function, right-hand function) of fractional neutral delay differential equations (FNDDEs). The corresponding theoretical results are given respectively. Furthermore, we present some numerical results that support our theoretical analysis.

Bell Polynomials play an important role in the characterization of bilinear equation. Bell Polynomials are extended to construct the bilinear form, bilinear Bäckhand transformation and Lax pairs for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with self-consistent sources.

Magnetohydrodynamic natural convection heat transfer in a rotating, differentially heated enclosure is studied numerically in this article. The governing equations are in velocity, pressure and temperature formulation and solved using the staggered grid arrangement together with MAC method. The governing parameters considered are the Hartmann number, 0≤Ha≤70, the inclination angle of the magnetic field, 0°≤θ 90°, the Taylor number, 8.9 x 104≤Ta≤1.1 x 106 and the centrifugal force is smaller than the Coriolis force and the both forces were kept below the buoyancy force. It is found that a sufficiently large Lorentz force neutralizes the effect of buoyancy, inertial and Coriolis forces. Horizontal or vertical direction of the magnetic field was most effective in reducing the global heat transfer.

The main purpose of this work is to contrast and analyze a large time-stepping numerical method for the Swift-Hohenberg (SH) equation. This model requires very large time simulation to reach steady state, so developing a large time step algorithm becomes necessary to improve the computational efficiency. In this paper, a semi-implicit Euler schemes in time is adopted. An extra artificial term is added to the discretized system in order to preserve the energy stability unconditionally. The stability property is proved rigorously based on an energy approach. Numerical experiments are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the large time-stepping approaches by comparing with the classical scheme.

In this paper, we investigate the Galerkin spectral approximation for elliptic control problems with integral control and state constraints. Firstly, an a posteriori error estimator is established,which can be acted as the equivalent indicatorwith explicit expression. Secondly, appropriate base functions of the discrete spacesmake it is probable to solve the discrete system. Numerical test indicates the reliability and efficiency of the estimator, and shows the proposed method is competitive for this class of control problems. These discussions can certainly be extended to two- and three-dimensional cases.

This paper presents an analysis of unsteady flow of incompressible fractional Maxwell fluid filled in the annular region between two infinite coaxial circular cylinders. The fluid motion is created by the inner cylinder that applies a longitudinal time-dependent shear stress and the outer cylinder that is moving at a constant velocity. The velocity field and shear stress are determined using the Laplace and finite Hankel transforms. Obtained solutions are presented in terms of the generalized G and R functions. We also obtain the solutions for ordinary Maxwell fluid and Newtonian fluid as special cases of generalized solutions. The influence of different parameters on the velocity field and shear stress are also presented using graphical illustration. Finally, a comparison is drawn between motions of fractional Maxwell fluid, ordinary Maxwell fluid and Newtonian fluid.

In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to study the wave propagation in an infinite, homogeneous, transversely isotropic thermo-piezoelectric solid bar of circular cross-sections immersed in inviscid fluid. The present study is based on the use of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. Three displacement potential functions are introduced to uncouple the equations of motion and the heat and electric conductions. The frequency equations are obtained for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibration and are studied based on Lord-Shulman, Green-Lindsay and Classical theory theories of thermo elasticity. The frequency equations of the coupled system consisting of cylinder and fluid are developed under the assumption of perfect-slip boundary conditions at the fluid-solid interfaces, which are obtained for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibration and are studied numerically for PZT-4 material bar immersed in fluid. The computed non-dimensional frequencies are compared with Lord-Shulman, Green-Lindsay and Classical theory theories of thermo elasticity for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations. The dispersion curves are drawn for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations. Moreover, the dispersion of specific loss and damping factors are also analyzed for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations.

In this paper, semidefinite optimization method is proposed to estimate bounds on linear functionals defined on solutions of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with smooth coefficients. The method can get upper and lower bounds by solving two semidefinite programs, not solving ODEs directly. Its convergence theorem is proved. The theorem shows that the upper and lower bounds series of linear functionals discussed can approach their exact values infinitely. Numerical results show that the method is effective for the estimation problems discussed. In addition, in order to reduce calculation amount, Cheybeshev polynomials are applied to replace Taylor polynomials of smooth coefficients in computing process.

This paper presents a lattice Boltzmann (LB) method based study aimed at numerical simulation of aeroacoustic phenomenon in flows around a symmetric obstacle. To simulate the compressible flow accurately, a potential energy double-distribution-function (DDF) lattice Boltzmann method is used over the entire computational domain from the near to far fields. The buffer zone and absorbing boundary condition is employed to eliminate the non-physical reflecting. Through the direct numerical simulation, the flow around a circular cylinder at Re=150, M=0.2 and the flow around a NACA0012 airfoil at Re=10000, M=0.8, α=0° are investigated. The generation and propagation of the sound produced by the vortex shedding are reappeared clearly. The obtained results increase our understanding of the characteristic features of the aeroacoustic sound.

Vortex rings have been a subject of interest in vortex dynamics due to a plethora of physical phenomena revealed by their motions and interactions within a boundary. The present paper is devoted to physics of a head-on collision of two vortex rings in three dimensional space, simulated with a second order finite volume scheme and compressible. The scheme combines non-iterative approximate Riemann-solver and piecewise-parabolic reconstruction used in inviscid flux evaluation procedure. The computational results of vortex ring collisions capture several distinctive phenomena. In the early stages of the simulation, the rings propagate under their own self-induced motion. As the rings approach each other, their radii increase, followed by stretching and merging during the collision. Later, the two rings have merged into a single doughnut-shaped structure. This structure continues to extend in the radial direction, leaving a web of particles around the centers. At a later time, the formation of ringlets propagate radially away from the center of collision, and then the effects of instability involved leads to a reconnection in which small-scale ringlets are generated. In addition, it is shown that the scheme captures several experimentally observed features of the ring collisions, including a turbulent breakdown into small-scale structures and the generation of small-scale radially propagating vortex rings, due to the modification of the vorticity distribution, as a result of the entrainment of background vorticity and helicity by the vortex core, and their subsequent interaction.

Common silicate glasses are among the most brittle of the materials. However, on warming beyond the glass transition temperature Tg glass transforms into one of the most plastic known materials. Bulk metallic glasses exhibit similar phenomenology, indicating that it rests on the disordered structure instead on the nature of the chemical bonds. The micromechanics of a solid with bulk amorphous structure is examined in order to determine the most basic conditions the system must satisfy to be able of plastic flow. The equations for the macroscopic flow, consistent with the constrictions imposed at the atomic scale, prove that a randomly structured bulk material must be either a brittle solid or a liquid, but not a ductile solid. The theory permits to identify a single parameter determining the difference between the brittle solid and the liquid. However, the system is able of perfect ductility if the plastic flow proceeds in two dimensional plane layers that concentrate the strain. Insight is gained on the nature of the glass transition, and the phase occurring between glass transition and melting.

In this paper, we investigate the mean-square convergence of the split-step θ-scheme for nonlinear stochastic differential equations with jumps. Under some standard assumptions, we rigorously prove that the strong rate of convergence of the split-step θ-scheme in strong sense is one half. Some numerical experiments are carried out to assert our theoretical result.
