Summary
At what point does ‘new blood’ take over in medical science to ensure maximum progress? What happens when a leader in science suddenly… passes away? Chapter 15 is concerned with how intergenerational dynamics in medicine influence progress, as well as what happens when eminent scientists are replaced by younger and more junior colleagues. This is particularly important since many breakthrough discoveries occur among young and up-and-coming researchers with new ideas. The chapter also explores the importance of mentorship in the sciences, and how good mentorship can vastly improve research productivity among mentees - thus influencing the rate at which discoveries are made.
