Dr Bettesworth had a Commission for Eccl Jurisd in Sussex. Now July 2. 1763 Dr Dennis Clarke.

All Saints in Chichester (above 30 miles from Lewes) al. in Palenta al. in Palatin R. ABP P. Tenths 11-9 (Called 10£. in 1718). Certified 11£. 7 Sept 1676 John Holder was instituted to it by the ABP on the Presentation of the King, Patron by Lapse. The ABP always collated to it before. And there is no mention of it in the Books since. Vid Reg. Parker. Par Book 1663. Parish small (45 families in 1717). Inhabitants chiefly of middle Rank. Honble Coote Molesworth Esqr. Some Presbyterians. No Parsonage Ho. Service once a Month by Custom. Rector disposes of Offertory Money.

The Dean of Chichester hath 10 Parishes in & near that City under his peculiar Jurisdiction.

Augmented by Lot. qu when. Land proposed to be purchased 1762. 1762 Neither Church nor Chancel cieled (nor Feb. 1766). Altar & Rails handsome. No Ch. yard or Ho. Wt was Ho. is a Stable: 2 other Stables, wch were messuages 1635.

John Hancock R. Also V. of Barsted p. 275 where see. Died Oct. 23. 1761. Blagden teaches a small School in the Parish, hath another Curacy of abt 40£ a year, a large & increasing Family. A worthy man. Rec. by BP & Dean. Wrote to Dr Bettesworth. Nov. 29 1761, to grant him the Sequestration, who did it Dec. 1.

Barsted al. Bergstead V. St Mary Magd. (near Chichester, 6 miles). Belonged to the Priory of Christ Church, Cant. Ecton. ABP P. Kings books 7-18-9. Wake 80£, Herring 90£ (So in 1717). Small Tithes 60£: 20£ pd by the Revd Mr Gooch, (half brother to Sir Thomas) out of the Rectory, which is 200£ a year. Mr Walter (see next line). Extent 7 miles: 5 Timings, see their Names. Renters of Lands. Come to Church regularly. V. saith, it is but 62£, with the House; & that 10£ is to be deducted out of that for Land Tax & Tenths: & that the Houses may be about 50 or 60 (abt 70 in 1717).
