Summary

A stretch of dialogue in the last scene of Hamlet as printed in the second Quarto of 1604–5 (Q2) has long been considered something of a textual crux. In response to Hamlet’s tale of rewriting the commission for his execution entrusted with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Horatio demands, ‘Why what a King is this!’ Hamlet then launches into an account, in both Q2 and F, of Claudius’s offences. Figure 9 shows Hamlet’s speech as printed in Q2.
